Yes there is. Download another recovery.img file and flash it via fastboot.
Or try 'flash image GUI' app or 'Goomanager'

I think the recovery has to be one word (no hyphens). Try renaming the recovery and flashing again (or get another one)

It seems to me like you have only a few options:
A ) Compile a ROM yourself, with the necessary patches to enable national roaming.
B ) Find the commits and ask a ROM developer to integrate them into their ROM.
C ) Try out all of the available ROMs to see which others (if any) have that option.
D ) Stick with Paranoid Android until it becomes more full-featured.
I wish I had better news for you.

They're starting from scratch with KitKat. They're rewriting all of their features to clean things up. It'll take time until it's back to where it was, but they believe it'll help with future updates.

If you click the link in my prior response it shows the merged commits. You can copy the links and get them into the hands of a developer and hopefully they can integrate them into their ROM.

What's you're build number? For example "KOT49H". It could be possible that there is an update coming for the Nexus 5 since the Nexus 7 recently received an update but as users have mentioned I've never seen the "UPDATE" screen look like the one in the picture you've provided.

Any tips on your unroot method? I had some trouble to update 26->28, just select unroot option from superuser?
I did so, and reinstalled stock recovery, unfortunately the update stops ~10%mark. Messing around with it, had to factory reset and force install stock 26 to then manage to upgrade.

Pretty sure that's Dual Sim only, however, it looks like xxminiWHOPERxx has uploaded something to flash to handle this on the stock rom thread that will work with single sim. It's the last post on that thread, possibly the first if they've added that devs stuff.

Awesome! Thanks for that, but with a flash able, no hassle version, and me being a lazy SOB, I'll just go with that. I appreciate the effort though!
In HTC One E8 Manual the following method is given to remove red screen text:
Download and copy the modified HBOOT zip file to your phone.
Boot your HTC One E8 into Fastboot mode: press and hold the Volume Down + Power buttons for a few seconds till the screen turns up and the phone shows the Bootloader screen. Using the volume down button highlight the FASTBOOT option and select it by pressing the power key.
Now connect you phone to the computer.
Navigate to the platform-tools directory and launch a CMD window here. To do this press Shift + Right-click at an empty space in the directory and select “Open command window here” option.
Now issue the following command and hit Enter key:
fastboot oem rebootRUU
Then type this command and press Enter:
fastboot flash zip filename_hboot.zip
The installation will begin but the process will halt at around 75% – 90% on phone screen. Do not worry and type the following command:
fastboot reboot-bootloader
The installation progress bar should now show 100% and then the device will reboot into the Bootloader mode.
Reboot your phone now.
