[Q] Camera Problem w CM 10.1 - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Hey Guys -
I'm a little new to the forum, I've usually just had a friend who is more savvy with this stuff help me out. He refers to this site always so, instead of bothering him, I wanted to see if I could solve this problem myself.
I just flashed my ROM to CM 10.1 (the stable one found on their site) last night, and it works fine but I just noticed that the camera will not connect, no matter what app I'm in (camera, instagram, etc.).
Does anyone know of any way to fix this? I've been trying to research before posting on here, I saw someone say something about kernels, leankernel and ktoonsez's kernel? Again, I'm really new to this so I didn't quite understand what I needed to do.
Any help would be appreciated, thank you!

Flash the I535VRBMB1 modem/radio from this thread..
It's a kernel issue from what I can tell. The above radio/modem reverts back to the previous modem/radio.
Ktoonz's kernel will fix the camera issue, but it will break your audio playback via Pandora. At least on mine (CM 10.1.0; KT747 6/26), it will only play in mono.

Interesting.
I switched from KT 6/26 to CM10.1.0 Stable stock kernel and audio worked fine. I figured it was KT 6/26's fault.
I should clarify: my issue is specifically with Pandora. The stock music app works fine.

Thanks guys for the quick responses! I'm looking for the kernel you're talking about on that other thread, but, and I realized I actually don't know how to specifically flash a kernel?
I've used Odin and everything before, under the instruction of my friend I referenced before, so I know my way around it, I just don't quite remember the steps. I just want to verify...the kernel file would be a .tar, and you would flash it with Odin PDA?
I'm sure there's steps I'm missing.

Got the file, last question (besides me asking the process of how to flash a kernel):
do I MD5 check the kernel file? I keep seeing that brought up in other threads
luckily, I just found that I can flash the kernel file via TWRP, so that's easier than Odin (Odin just scares me for some reason)

Ok all, I flashed that kernel. Phone is working fine. (I was nervous as hell before I told TWRP to flash the kernel)
But the camera is still not working....any other suggestions?

Flash this file the same way you flashed the kernel and update to the latest baseband. If that doesn't work, try reflashing the kernel after.

That seems to be the same file (from the same site) I downloaded and just flashed before. Is it different in some way?
Also, how do I go about upgrading my baseband?
thank!

The situation is a little confused right now.
The stable. CM10.1 release requires MB1 modem, the latest nightlies work with MF1. There is no requirement to change kernels, unless you really really want the stable release AND the mf1 modem.
If you read the first post in the official cm thread in QA or original development you'll see this along with links to the modem files.

I REALLY appreciate the help and opinions so far guys.
I'm hoping I've laid out everything I'm doing in a clear manner so you can follow along with what I'm doing.
After reading some of the replies, I think that I've done exactly what you all are saying, which is flashing that VRBMF1 kernel.
Unfortunately, the camera is still not working. Any suggestions?

MF1 is a modem not a kernel.
And you have two choices
1: stable 10.1.0 with MB1
2: latest nightlies with MF1
Other combinations won't work. If you have any more questions quote me in your post and I'll get an email notification.
Thanks

It worked! That MB1 modem flash got the camera working properly. Hopefully nothing else stopped working, but if it did, I'll be back here with the quickness haha.
Thank you guys all so much, I'm glad I decided to try and figure this out on this messageboard, you guys were most helpful!

My experience
I find that keeping all three of the modem AIO packages (MB1, MD3, MF1) in a folder on the phone or external sdcard can be helpful when switching ROMs to ensure you can flash whichever one works best. Also, sometimes installing the wrong gapps package can break certain things like the camera which cause them to crash or other normal functions of your phone. And so, I also keep my roms in their own folders with the appropriate gapps version for that particular ROM. You can check to see which versions of each you have in 'Settings > About Phone" If you already knew all of this I apologize. Just thought it could be helpful.

Nexus S (GR154) I9020A Custom ROM options?

Hello everyone
I am new to the Android world and loving it! I've been wanting to get a Android phone for some time, and took the plunge last week and purchased a Nexus S through Rogers in Canada - Model I9020A Build GR154.
This phone is amazing stock, but naturally I want to experiment with custom ROM's and get all the functionality and performance tweaks I can.
I apologize for the newb questions, but if someone could enlighten me on what they think some of the best custom roms compatible with my device are, and their personal experience with said roms. My main "wants" in a rom are. Sound improvements (voodoo), video chat on gtalk, greater battery longevity. CM7, Amethyst Nexus 2.2, and Infinity 1.1.0 all interest me. Anyone on GR154 using any of these roms? I'm not clear if any of said roms will work properly on my device.
Again I apologize for the newb questions, any help, advice, recommendations would be much appreciated.
Thanks!

I have the same NS (I9020a on Rogers). Any of these should work:

The above post is pretty comprehensive and is updated frequently. If you plan on doing alot of flashing, it's a good one to keep bookmarked. I've tested most of them and I haven't had any problems yet.
Happy flashing!
Excellent. Thank you very much!

I'm running 2.3.3 (CM 7.0.3) with netarchy kernel and stock modem (KB2) on my I9020A and it's been great!
Since there isn't much info on I9020As I didn't have the balls to try 2.3.4 or KB3 or the modem after that.
Does anybody know if 2.3.4 roms are working on I9020As? I thought they didn't work but the post above implies otherwise...
And the new modems? Do they run ok with 850mhz?
Cheers!

The new modem that comes with 2.3.4 causes the infamous search button behaviour. Other than that the 2.3.4 flash is pretty stable on the 9020a
Equally new to all of this, with the exact same phone and build.
Where would I find a root and flash tutorial thats up to date and easy as hell? Lol

The tutorial I found the most straightforward and helpful was created by theunlockr.com here:
http://theunlockr.com/2010/12/17/how-to-root-the-samsung-nexus-s/
The only thing to note is that you can ignore section "VI. Stop the Phone from Uninstalling the Custom Recovery Image". Once you flash Clockworkmod Recovery it stays on the I9020a. The "install-recovery.sh" file does not exist on the I9020a. As far as I know this is unique to the I9020a, but I could be wrong.
I am far from an expert, but I hope this helps!

Agreed. I have been running stock rooted 2.3.4 since it became available and I haven't experienced any issues at all, even Google Talk Video has been working flawlessly over wifi (haven't tried GTalk on 3G yet).
I haven't experienced any unusual search button behaviour either, but I hardly use it.

hardware or software suckyness?

Hi all, thanks for taking the time to read.
I have a LG G2X, love the feel, the display, the specs and the price. Hate the phone....in every other way
I am on my 4th G2X now b/c I keep taking it back to T-Mobile to get a new one based on the following things my phone does:
1. It restarts 1-2x a week, randomly with or without a power adapter plugged
2. It freezes up every other day or so and requires a hard restart (battery pull) to resume use
3. It frequently takes 5+ minutes to get a GPS lock (tried in several cities coast to coast US)
Now if it were just the first phone I could say lemon, but every G2X I have owned does this, T-Mobile told me it was a known issue with the phone but couldn't tell me if it was software or hardware in nature.
So my question to you fellow forumites is this: Is the issue hardware related (move on to another phone) or software (Rom install fixes all my worries and I'm happy forever and ever and ever)?
If you're still using the stock ROM, and are still on 2.3.3, then you are experiencing SW suckage... Get a custom CM7 Rom on there and enjoy some of the finer benefits. Stability will be better but you won't be dead-set stable. GPS has been an issue for some since the inception of the phone. Others have GREAT GPS reception.
Research the Development forums and find a CM7.2 ROM that best suits you. You can of course go CM9 (ICS) but you won't get HW Acceleration and some things just flat out don't work yet.

The stability and GPS performance are greatly enhanced by the stock 2.3.4 ROM, also, if you're not a CM7 fan.

Thanks for the great responses guys, just another reason I love this forum.
I should have given a few more details, I am running stock 2.3.3 on T-Mobile in the US.
Few questions for a techie (but virgin ROMer):
1. Is the 2.3.4 stock available OTA? I haven't seen any available upgrades.
2. What does baseband refer to? (trying to educate myself on the terms)
3. Any favorite ROMs? My must haves are stability and speed, other than that any goodies/awesomeness is welcome but the first two are absolute.
I am tempted to stick to stock ROMs as I haven't flashed one myself yet and this phone is my lifeblood b/c of work.
On a scale of 1-10 where 1 is "I did it with on accident when I dropped it down the stairs" and 10 is "the most difficult thing you will ever do in your life" what is the difficulty for a ROM virgin to sucessfully flash to 2.3.4 (if it is not available OTA) or CM7/other ROMs,etc?
I am technical, 12 year IT professional with MCSA/CCNA, etc but haven't done much research into the ROM biz. If its not too difficult is there a "Must read" guide for noobs?

Difficulty is pretty low. If you can follow instructions, and understand what you're doing, then you should be good to go. If you want 2.3.4, you're gonna need to use LG's ****ty software. Either you use KDZ flasher, or LG's official PC suite. Both crashed on me constantly on Win7 x64. I was lucky/unlucky, it crashed right after writing the baseband (low level radio firmware). It hadn't even partitioned anything yet if I tried to turn it on, not even a backlight was showing. So I had to use NVflash to completely repartition it to stock. After that, I flashed CWM (clockworkmod), the custom recovery. Nowadays, TWRP is available. TWRP is awesome, and they have awesome Devs. TWRP (teamwin recovery project) is touch based rather than CWM and traditional volume key and power button navigation. There is CWM touch, but it's extremely experimental and I find it too glitchy compared to TWRP. TWRP is a work in progress however and there may be issues (I had one but it was easily fixed with one command when I spoke with the Devs on irc) I haven't had any serious ones though. IMO it's easier to NVflash in a Linux environment, because there is no messing around with drivers. But after drivers are installed on windows, the difficulty level plateaus.
As for my favorite ROM, that would currently temasek cm7 builds. They're stable, fast and they're customizable as f***.
I don't have any links right now, because I'm on my phone, (I can grab them later/soonish) you're going to want tga_gunman's thread named something along the lines of "One click recovery flasher" that's for CWM recovery. If you want TWRP, there's a thread that has TWRP in the title.
Also look for "ROM for recovery under NVflash" or something similar to that. That will take you back to complete stock 2.3.3 no matter what happened software wise, unless you somehow managed to break the baseband. The baseband is the only thing that cannot be fixed by NVflash, only can be fixed by LG's ****ty PC software.
For temasek's cm7 builds, the thread is not created by temasek, but the builds are by him. It should be at build 133 or 134.
If you need anything else, PM me maybe.
Good deal, I'm planning on following this thread from the general section (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1594650).
I'm leaving out of state but will work on it over the weekend.
Thanks for all your help and support everybody, any additional comments are welcome before I start flashing this weekend.
Q - Do I need to get the owain's baseband flash fix or not with the ROM you sugested, the comments on the thread are confusing me a bit. If so where can I download the correct one, can't seem to find it in the Dev threads.

Help a noobie out, what/where is owain's hopto?
Edit: I'll test without the fix, to be sure and flash the baseband if needed, i understood from the comments in the ROM's thread that its needed for Bluetooth calls.
I might have found the baseband fix link (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1776843) can anyone confirm?

Firstly thanks for all the good Q/A, like a good forum noobie, I'm marking thanks each reply.
I want to make sure I understand your comment. This is what I understood, let me know if I'm off/on. The CM Roms do not work with BT calling, so I should stick with stock if that's important to me? I would assume then for me to get beyond my current issues (OP) my best bet would be to Flash the 2.3.4 stock?
Thanks again for the info and time.
***edit***
Nix the above. I completely read it wrong, thought you were saying all CM ROMs didn't work with Bluetooth. Just so on the current Baseband.
I'm on Jul 15 2011 Baseband currently, so I'll attempt the CM7 ROM this weekend when I'm back home and able to devote more focus. Coming from stock 2.3.3 do I need to flash a kernel as well or will that be in the ROM <---showing my ROM noobness but unashamed to learn.

If you decide to get the newer baseband (you get it with 2.3.4 kdz, only way to get new baseband) and bt calling is important, do not go to cm. If you don't mind staying on the older baseband, bt calling will work fine on cm.

Lol, I feel so dumb, its like learning a new language while being held underwater.
kdz=?
I'm trying to understand why I would decide to get the newer baseband? If I do I can use BT calling but can't use CM7 ROMs, if I don't I can use CM7 ROMs and BT calls should work fine. Dont see the upside to upgrading the baseband, unless it has issues?

KDZ = LG's proprietary file type to update their phones via PC officially. A lot of people say the new baseband gives them better gps and call quality. Basically if you don't change baseband to the new one, everything will work perfectly. If you DO switch, everything will work perfectly, but only on stock. Everything will work on cm except Bluetooth calling with the new baseband. I don't think it's worth restricting yourself to stock because of the new baseband and and bt calling. My recommendation? Don't change baseband, just go to cm. Also, soon we might start to see android 4.1.1 jelly bean. They won't be stable for a while though.
Too much fun.
Couldn't wait, just finished flashing CWM, then backed up, then wiped like 400x then dropped the CM7 ROM you sugested.

Looking for a 3.0 kernel based ROM

I've been having issues with all sound dropping out on various ROMs and I don't recall this happening on any pre-3.4 kernel based ROMs.
All the download links in the threads for 4.2.2 ROMs are now dead so I was wondering if anyone has an old file kicking around? Or know where I could find one? My hard drive died a while back and it seems everything since then has been 3.4 based so I no longer have any 3.0 ROMs on my computer that I can try myself.
Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Haha, yeah, I know. But when your phone has no sound whatsoever, it ceases to be useful. Can't remember that happenign to me on 3.0 so I figured I'd check it out.
Also, not too sure what the big deal is with 3.4. When it first came out, there was the wake lag, then that was fixed but bootloops became an issue. The 3.0 ROMs were more reliable for me in general, just not as up to date.
EDIT: Your first post ever was to tell me that? Haha

An old favourite and one of the best ROM's for this phone. I have Twisted V & VI as well, just let me know if you need them.

If this works you'll be my bestest friend, haha. I didn't think this was going to happen. Thanks so much.
Are V and VI 3.0 based?
THANK YOU
Ok so it sort of works.
No sound issues so far but I keep getting random soft reboots and apps constantly closing (no error or pop up), Cleared caches in recovery. Anything special I'm supposed to do after flashing this? I'm so close to having a working phone again, this ROM seems likes my best bet...but now it's giving me other issues.
Thank you for your time.
Try changing skin on the phone and then change it back also for soft reboots what works for me is uninstallin kernel Turner and reinstalling and applying settings again

Yeah, according to his thread all the Twisted kernel's were based on 3.0.

I can't really remember but I don't think there was any special instructions to install Liquid Smooth. Check the thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2194095&highlight=liquid+smooth
You might want to try this ROM as well: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B_VcoEHi3OfvSnh3djJTTjMtdHM/edit?usp=sharing
No thread for it because it had to be taken down, but ran as well as Liquid did. Not sure if Gapps are included.
rmbq still has some v3.0 kernel's for download here: http://www.androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=3224
Try bubba Vn5 if you're still having problems.

I love this community. Not going to have the chance to mess with this until tomorrow probably, but I will post and let you know how it all goes. Really appreciate the help.
EDIT: I read through that thread yesterday and it doesn't seem like there's anything special I need to do, so hopefully some of these other suggestions work. Once I flash it again I'll try changing the governor (if I can make it that far without rebooting, haha). If that doesn't work, you've given me lots to work with. Thanks.
I have a blackbean build with the 3.0 kernel.

OK, been busy all weekend so here's my findings:
I was able to get Liquid Smooth working using the Bubba Vn5 kernel. That was the first step.
Then I had to give it time and see if my audio dropped - and it did. So the 3.4 kernel doesn't seem to be the issue.
So I ran a logcat and while not completely versed in what to look for, I did find some audio errors relating to the audiopolicy manager, and tone generator and soundpool. Did a bit of searching and seems it could have to do with my firmware, which, of course, was also switched when I changed to the 3.4 kernel. I'm going to try reflashing 2.15 and maybe upgrade to 2.16 if that doesn't work. If neither work, I'll have to see about downgrading, but since I don't have a lower flashable zip, I'll have to mess around with an RUU so hopefully it doesn't come to that.
Thanks to everyone. At the very least, you're helping me eliminate possible causes.

If I can get my sound back I'll probably be sticking with a 3.0 based rom as at the very least I'm not constantly plagued by bootloops so I'll gladly take your copy of blackbean if you don't mind. Just another option for me to flash
p.s: my logcat should be attached. If anyone has experience with reading them, it would be greatly appreciated if you could take a look and see if anything stands out. Thanks again to everybody.
Ok, so I managed to extract the ruu using a script and flashed the rom.zip via fastboot. I am now on hboot 1.13, running LS v2.4 with bubba vn5 (3.0 kernel) and am still without sound. Logcat shows the same errors as the one I posted above (not sure exactly what they mean, but they are audio related from what I can tell.
Since I have ruled out everything I can think of on the software side, could this possible be a hardware issue?

Just here dude and looking at logcat to me look like you got no drivers or no sound hardware, not like that's any use to you.

Thanks, based on my searches, it seemed like every older ROM had dead links.
No drivers or sound hardware, huh? So something isn't right, haha. I've had sound at points so I assume there must be something up with how the software interacts with the hardware or my hardware isn't stable and works only from time to time.
Not what I wanted to hear but what can ya do? I've posted this in the Q and A forum as well, see if I can get some more info. Thanks though.

Got it downloaded
I've tried the newer, 4.2.2 Sense ROMs and while not entirely sure (I wasn't really looking for the sound issue at the time) I recall it happening on them, too.
But I'm going to try the old ViperOneS 4.1.2 ROM because I know that I had no issues at all back when I was using that. If it's still present, I'm going to assume it's a hardware fault and I'll have to try and unroot, s-on, go back to stock, achange my CID and all that crap and see if I can't get it replaced.
Thanks for your help.

[Q] [KERNEL] Newbie here, some direction needed

Hi all,
First let me start by telling you what device I am using a Samsung Galaxy S III I535 running Liquid Smooth 2.37 rom.
I have been flashing phones for years and have bricked, unbricked & in most cases had success with dirty flashing and doing clean flashes. I have gotten to the point in my adventures with flashing phones to experiment with kernels, since that's all anyone talks about that gets some legit performance and battery life stats. So my questions are as follows ( and i apologize now if this has been asked a bazillion times before. If that is in fact the case, some direction to the link would be much appreciated, thanks! )
1) what are the steps one would have to take to properly flash a Kernel
2) are there any pitfalls and caveats i should be concerned about ( bricking is the obvious one here )
Thank you again in advance for taking the time to help me out. Just trying to get fully educated before i decide to start messing around further with my phones!

1) Make sure the kernel is compatible with your rom, Do some reading about the kernel -pros & cons.
2) Flash away. In theory, you don't even need to wipe cache or dalvik cache, but just wipe them to make you feel like...it's clean!!
3) The worst thing is you get a bootloop which is an easy fix.
One other thing to note, is AOSP kernels are not compatible with TouchWiz roms, and TW kernels are not compatible with AOSP roms.
Make sure you get the right one, if the developer offers both options.

Just adding onto this, one good way of ensuring #1 is to flash a compatible AOSP 4.3 or 4.4 kernel that is dated at or about the same time as your rom. If the more recent kernel doesn't work, try the release prior to that.

Much appreciated guys! I decided to go with [4.3/4.4][AOSP] ¤ BMS ¤ d2vzw / d2usc 3.4.y (link below). So far so good, flashed easily and no problems at this point. Ill report back and see how the performance gains are.

I noticed as soon as I loaded the Kernel there was an issue. It wouldn't connect to any wifi networks. As a matter of fact, I couldn't even turn on wifi, the switch just stayed grayed out after i initially hit it. So currently I am running KT until I can find a solution to my issue. I would love to run BMS given the great response but I need to be able to use wifi lol

Bootloop after flashing. Help!
Need some help. I have installed this kernel on CM 12.1 Rohan's build and got bootloop... Some info: I used Philz Touch 6 Fota and wiped cache and dalvic after flash. I recovered from soft brick through but what should I do to avoid bootloop?
File
Sorry for the dumb question but what is zip dl-0? cant flash it, it wont detect it.
Good day. First off, i wanted to say that i've tried this kernel and the d2w is very helpful for preserving the hw power button and i think this kernel is very useful.
The thing is, since their latest releases, i've found that Glade Rom and SlimLP have been the roms that are best for me in terms of what i need and my daily usage. Unfortunately, this kernel doesn't work for either of them. I'm guessing it's because of their base?
Anyway, i'd like to ask if the dev has any plans to get this kernel working for either of those roms or for aosp 5.1.1 roms in general? If yes, that would be awesome. If not, then i still say this kernel's features are still very helpful and i'll be waiting to get a cm-based rom that works for my needs. ?

I have plans to bring this to every LP based ROM for XL.
I guess there might be some kernel related change. I will see to it.

bootloops. even through a clean install or flashing it after an install and clearing dalvik and cache...
i've noticed that the roms that doesn't work with tz 4.15 won't work with this kernel either.
great to hear your plans. really appreciate it.
edit:
both these roms are aosp based and have RRO supported as opposed to cm theme engine. could that have any bearing on it? let me know how i can help.
Problem on my HTC One (M7)
Hello,
first of all I would like to apologize for my English problems. I installed your Kernel on my HTC ONE M7. It is running on Cyanogenmod 12.1 (Android 5.1.1). The problem is that my handy freezes everytime it tries to boot. It freezes on the HTC logo to be more specific. Please let me know if you need to know more details or need even a log and I hope this issue gets solved.
Thank you

LOL No, this kernel is not meant for HTC One.
This kernel is only for Sony Xperia L. Please read the full post before trying anything.
Now how to recover? If you are able to go in recovery, flash CM12 or any custom ROM.
Master Solution is flashing stock as always, although I dont know how things are done for HTC [emoji14]
@corphish i kniw i shouldn't but.. If it's possible, may i ask that you add the Intelliactive scheduler if you can? Lulzactive and on demand doesn't really work for me (lulzactive seemed buggy last time i tried it - main core stayed on max freq). Just a request. ?

Well, you cannot go back to TZ now. It flashes kernel in boot-device linked partition, which is a mystery partition about which only Varun knows.

Is this a known issue though, or something that you or others have previously faced, that changing from Tz to Zapdos will break wifi? Just curious.
Hey man, I use Primexperia rom, it's CM12 based, soon to be posted new ver CM12.1 based. For some reasons it's not compatible with TZ 4.16, 4.14 only (wi fi missing on 4.16) Will this kernel work for me? The only thing I really need is a stable system with Sony sound
Oh almost forgot, I use TWRP and I think that any other recovery is a waste of time, to be honest. Can I use TWRP?

Then i shifted to your kernel, thank god it is not at all freezing while operating .
But i noticed that it is going to black screen/Dead State very frequently.
Waiting for any suggestions & help.
I appreciate your help & time.
Could we get 1.7~ OC like in TZ kernel? It was fully stable for me even with thermal throttling disabled.
Maybe it's noob but would the wake up signatures Hurt the touchscreen some how.
