How do you s-off without superCID? The main thread on xda that I saw involved superCID first.
And are there any downsides to superCID?
You can't.
No.

Sorry, let me rephrase it. Do you need to have superCID before you s-off? Some sites say you do, but other people have said that they s-off first.

From my understanding, SuperCID is part of the procedure of going S-Off. You don't do it "before" or "after."
What is your aversion to SuperCID? As far as I can tell, it's very easy, not any more difficult than other procedures involved with rooting and custom ROMs.
Personally, I used facepalm, so I'm not familiar with moonshine, but you should look into it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2325590

Hey guys
If I'm not wrong SuperCID is the manufacturer code, which prevents me to flash any Custom ROM and staying on Stock ROM, right?
So, if I didn't do SuperCID and still on Stock ROM, can I use RUU to return back to S-ON? If yes, will it install even if the RUU isn't the right one for the device?
Thank you
Super CID means you can flash ANY RUU you decide to try
So if I didn't do the SuperCID, if I choose the wrong RUU, it will not get flashaed or will it continue and I'll end up with a brick?
Edit: I found this: "If they don't have SuperCID, they'll get 'ERROR[131]: CUSTOMER ID ERROR' if they try to flash the wrong RUU and it will stop without flashing anything to the phone." Can anybody confirm that it's right?
Thank you
That is correct. With your normal CID you can only flash RUUs that are for your phone. WIth Super CID you can flash any RUU that takes your fancy

Others have reported that with super CID, they were not getting the updates from htc, but some said that they still received official updates from htc even with super CID. There are no real downsides to superCID as far as I know except maybe when you return it for warranty purposes, but you can always put your original CID back. Just take note of your original CID before you super CID.
The alternative to SuperCID is to flash the ENG hboot after you're s-off. The ENG hboot will disregard a CID mismatch.
Guys,
Noob question: do I have to be rooted to get superCIDed?
I didn't create any SuperCID when unlocking bootloader with Revolutionary... If that bad? Can i get that again?

Using htcdev keeps the phone S-ON. You'll still be able to run custom roms, but can't flash a new radio.

I refered to a you tube video " How to S-off htc desire s" the first video that shows up. My phone is already rooted using the hdc dev kit, however when I am trying to do s-off the software gives just a message "Error". It also fails at signature.
do let me know what more information can I provide.
If you have a guide that I can try and share the results with you do send me that as well. I am new to rooting the phone, so sorry for not providing any info that is required.
You either htcdev unlock or you s-off
You'll now need to relock your phone to undo the htcdev and then downgrade you phone in order to properly s-off using revolutionary.
There are various downgrade guides in the index, see link on my signature

No, it's S-ON, but writable on /system partition due to HTCDev unlock. It only means that you don't know the difference between S-OFF, rooting and HTCDev unlock - and misleading others.

Then please tell me why my Bootloader says:
*unlocked*
SAGA PUT SHIP S-OFF RL
S-OFF ... Security off
Rooting ... Grant root for the device, like su on linux
HTCDev unlock ... unlocks the bootloader
But its ok I just tried to help...
Then you can try to avoid confusion providing more detailed info, like:
"I have used XTC Clip to gain S-OFF, then used htcdev.com, without any particular reason, then got rooted by SuperOneClick"
Your previous post can mislead some non advanced users that SOC can provide S-OFF, without using additional tools.

Ok..
I unlocked my HTC Desire S following the instructions on HTCDev.com. Afterwards I rooted the Phone, installed Busybox and installed ClockworkMod Recovery using the SuperOneClick tool for Windows 7.
And now I am able to flash Rom and Radios.
Nope to upgrade your Radio you have to be S-OFF
Maybe it was shipped with S-OFF because I had a brandig first.
I doubt that it was shipped S-OFF and even if, why would you unlock it with HTCdev ?

And you can flash radios only because you had a phone which already was S-OFF, either during manufacturing or by XTC-Clip, and you just didn't understand it and uselessly unlocked it while you could have done whatever you wanted with it. And S-OFF is the only reason you can flash radios, and HTCDev unlock didn't actually add anything and didn't allow you anything - just as it won't allow any non-S-OFF user to flash radios, and won't turn S-ON to S-OFF. But what do I know, I was just passing here.

It is unlikely, but certainly possible. In the early days of Desire S development (back when we had to use the XTC-Clip hardware to obtain S-Off) there were some people who got their devices brand new already S-Off.
ok, back to the topic:
the simpliest way to gain s-off without xtc-clip is to downgrade the bootloader to HBOOT 0.98, and gain S-OFF with Revolutionary. After you did this you can run the latest ruu, which doesn't influence wether your s-off or s-on. Finally, you've got a device with hboot 2.02 and s-off.
After using revolutionary you are already S-OFF!
If you want to upgrade your HBOOT don't run a RUU AFAIK it could brick your device ... use this tutorial
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1679338
Do you know the differences between Radio HBOOT S-OFF root etc?

I have to disagree @Jack_R1 the unlock via htcdev wasn't completely useless as it managed to void his HTC warranty! logging that fact with HTC in the process!

hello, i have a question when you use a RUU you can install it with a unlocked bootloader? i have to lock the bootloader?

If your phone is s-off you can ruu with an unlocked boot loader. If your phone is s-on you must relock first.
Also if you are s-on and supercid there are reports of the ruu bricking the phone

Depends on what RUU. So far only the 3.18 RUU seems to brick the phone if you have SuperCID (and S-on). Not sure about any of the 3.17 RUUs. And the ICS RUUs, I don't think any bricks were ever reported due to SuperCID.
Of course, if in doubt its probably a good idea to S-off, just to be safe.

So before I unlocked my bootloader with HTCDev, I read somewhere saying that HTCDev blocks SuperCID and the only workaround is to change SuperCID to 2222222. Let me tell you first that HTCDev did not let me unlock my bootloader with SuperCID first of all. So I changed my SuperCID to CID 2222222. I did so and it worked. Now I have an unlocked bootloader (you know, "Tampered, Unlocked".
My question is, can I still S-Off? I know S-Off requires SuperCID and to change CID more than once, you need SuperCID. Or is it you need an unlocked bootloader to change CID more than once?
Thanks!
Nah, it's neither of those lol you need s-off to change the CID more than once. Technically 22222222 is still considered to be SuperCID so s-off should work.

The thread I read was:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2137959&page=1
Now, some of the comments in there were terribly written and it provided little help and confused me more. I believe the reason for HTCDev not giving me a token was because I didn't include the <<start here>> <<end here>> as part of the unlock process. Not until I have changed the CID did I think about that and did HTCDev let me change.
The thread misled me. And I was pretty dumb.
I hope its not a lost cause for me. I'd like to S-off and use other kernels and Roms.

Would it give me an error if I attempt to change it in the case it doesn't work. If it doesn't work, would it brick? Or would the error code prevent the phone from doing so?
Changing CID won't result in a brick would it?
It won't brick you, plenty have tried without SuperCID and it just fails.

Did a little reading but still am not clear on RUUs. I am looking to flash the 4.4 RUU and have s-off. If I flash this, will i retain s-off or no? Thanks.
You will remain s-off. The only way to turn s-on is to specifically issue the fastboot commands.
Once you are s-off from my understanding i am 99.99999% positive you will stay s-off

Any of the ones I posted will not affect unlock status and/or s off status.
Also, none of the ones I post require you to lock or turn s on to run.
Thanks
Straight to the point. Thanks all.
