Random "Custom" screen on boot. - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I'm pretty new to the S3, so still trying to understand the nuances of locked bootloaders and flash counters. Right now I'm running stock rooted on the latest update (MF1) stock recovery. The only things I've changed from stock are used Multi Window Manager to add a couple apps to multi Window and used Wallet installer for Google wallet. Had to unlock the bootloader for wallet, but did lock it back. I've had no issues... Until this morning. When I started the phone I got the "Custom" screen with the unlocked lock. Phone finished loading with no problems. Decided to reboot into download to check the flash counter, missed it the first time and it loaded the OS... no custom screen. Rebooted again into download and everything looked fine. Rebooted into recovery... Still stock. I probably used 20% of my battery rebooting over and over to see if I got it again and never did. Anyone else ever have this happen, or did I just catch a random fluke and need to move on with my life? Any ideas as to what would have thrown the custom screen?

Move on it just means that you have a custom bootchain.

Yeah, not getting to worked up about it. Just thought it was odd because I don't think I have a custom bootchain, but I'm new at this phone. If you do have a custom bootchain doesn't it have the custom screen every time it boots?

[Rom][ODIN] Stock Gingerbread 2.3.3 Deodexed + Root KF2

Some people have requested this, this is Gingerbread KF2 Deodexed + Root and odin flashable.
This contains all bloat.
Instructions:
1. Perform Factory Data Reset/Wipe Data (If you skip this step it may still work but may leave existing apps and may cause FC's)
2. Flash Via Odin
3. Wait 5min to boot
4. Hit Thanks
The messed up Rainbow at boot is normal if using Froyo BootLoaders just wait it will boot.
Below File contains no BOOTLOADERS

If I apply this (without manually doing a factory reset along the way), will I retain all of my apps and app data through this process?
I know I've used ODIN to update to the current stock release and used ODIN on my Vibrant and didn't lose my apps and app data.
Yes, there was some people in another thread that said you ALWAYS lose data when you update. I know they are wrong, but not sure what the case is with this particular update.
Does that fact that it's deodexed make it less likely that the data will be retained?
just flashed and waited 15 minutes on the rainbow screen, flashed again, same thing. how long does it take to boot the first time?

This will erase all apps, you need to use titanium backup first if you want to save that stuff.

try hitting the power button quickly it should loop once then work.

froyo bootloaders. will try it again.....
K. running smooth now, will test more tommorrow.
I see the wifi signal is weak,as with the previous rom
Strangely enough I have the froyo bootloaders, flashed this, got an upgrade failure to which got me to that annoying ass screen rom upgrade failed, so I tried it again, it was successful, but oddly not only did I not get the rainbow screen but I booted with all my apps and everything intact but confirm that I am now at 2.3.3 by su binary had gotten downgraded to 2 from the ,3 beta I had had and I was coming from the KD1 rom.... Anyway strange I know....

What were you running prior to this flash?
If you are having troubles with this flash please give more info, what rom did you have before, what bootloaders are you using? Any info helps so that I can narrow down any issues and fix them.
Thanks.

had the fully stock gb rom that shipped with the phone. i was able to flash with no problems, just cant get it to connect to the network just keeps saying searching, wifi calling and txting work just fine.
-edit
oh right after i did the flash, i did do sgs unlock pro app. not sure if that would of caused any problems but it looks like my IMEI is showing up as .[]x[]~ ".[]x[]~
I was having issues with this version and getting stuck on samsung screen a whole lot; and i'm talking about i started clean with KC1 full with .pit>whitehawkxKD1+root>then this rom.
tried the other route and odined back to KD1>boot into cwm>checked mount and flashed the cwm version. worked flawlessly; except the rainbow, ofcourse.
my recommendations are quiet obvious

[Q] Android always updating upon boot

I rooted my S3 a few weeks ago and have noticed that since I did that, upon booting up I will frequently get the message that Android is updating and optimizing my apps. Is this normal? I am still on JB 4.04
I'm not sure why it would do that. Which rom are you on? I've only ever seen that when I flashed a kernel or maybe even a failed boot animation flash. Did you edit a system file or your build.prop after rooting and then this started happening or has this only been happening because you rooted? Try either starting completely over with Odin then re-rooting OR flashing a different rom.
Also:
ICS = 4.0.4
JB = 4.1, 4.1.2, and 4.2.1

Does it do it every time or just when you wipe your cache in recovery?
It's normal if you wipe.
And for goodness sakes please don't Odin. It's overkill and unnecessary.

This happens when I flash a kernel

Actually i flashed a Sspeed Kernel v8 and every boot android apps are updating, Any idea how to fix that?
Some init.d scripts cause this behavior in custom ROMs, but in stock ROMs I'm not sure what would cause this.

Looks like it could be rebuilding the dalvik cache on each boot. Why not just flash a custom ROM and see what happens

[Q] Help with recovery after failed ROM installation

So after 6 months of perfectly working NON rooted phone, I decided to root my Verizon Galaxy S3. I previously owned a Moto Droid 2 and rooted and had no problems ever. Unfortunately, within hours of a successful root, I made the mistake of downloading ROM manager (since it worked fine on my Droid 2) and tried installing the first listed AOKP custom ROM. It rebooted and did everything that was expected, until it just hung on the boot up screen for over an hour. I then decided to (for better or worse) pull the battery and just boot into recovery. Unfortunately, this brought me to a message from Verizon saying "you are doing bad things, bring your phone to Verizon" (more or less anyway). So I fixed that much by getting the factory image/reboot and installing via Odin. My problem now is it constantly keeps failing/closing android process every minute or so. I can't navigate it long enough to do anything before it fails again and takes me back to lock screen followed by home screen. When I boot to recovery, it says I have no files to restore either, but I KNOWWW for a fact I did a backup through CWM before I did ANYTHING involving any custom ROMs. PLEASE help me! Ask any and all related questions that will help you and I'll do my best to answer them.
Can you check your file system and see if your CWM folder has a backup? It should be Sdcard/CWM or extsdcard/CWM. If not, do you mind flashing another rom or that same rom?

2 questions: Which factory image did you use to restore (link to thread)? Did you change the default backup location in CWM (ie, did you backup to the external sd or the internal - internal is default)?
There is a file in both extsdcard and sdcard with clock work mod back up. I did manage to factory reset and re root, so phone is functional again, just with none of my apps or settings. I have a feeling I'm going to need to un root in order to re receive my JB update too?

Didn't unlock bootloader?
I don't know for sure. I unzipped SU plus bootloader file exactly as specified in forums/video. Had no problems until I tried installing that ROM through ROM manager. And forgive me for trying that. I hadn't rooted in over a year. But main problem now is just that I want to recover how my phone was ie settings and set up if possible.

That sounds about the right size for a backup. When you go into CWM and do the restore (or restore from external - which ever has that folder, you didn't say) it doesn't show a backup?
What version of CWM are you running?
It's version CWM6023touchvzw.tar.md5. And it's on the external. But no matter which option of restore I choose in the recovery boot, it says file not found.

Maybe after all that flashing and Odin-ing your recovery install got wanked, somehow.
Let's try this: it will re-install the latest CWM, clean and then let's see if it'll recognize your backups.
http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager/
download the touch image for the d2vzw (or just click here)
put that in the root of your internal sd card.
Open up terminal emulator on your phone and type the following:
Code:
su
dd if=/sdcard/recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.2.3-d2vzw.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18
reboot recovery
(partition 18 is your recovery partition)
That'll push the known good CWM to your recovery partition and boot you into it. It won't mess with any sort of data anywhere else on the phone.
Alright, thanks. I'll give this a try after I get back home from work.

Galaxy s3 keeps shutting off by itself during sleep

I have a really bad problem, my gf and I recently both got the Verizon galaxy s3 from Amazon wireless. I happen to like mine. In a day I rooted, flashed Synergy and won't go back.
Now..my gf's galaxy is a different story. From day one,.Hers likes to shut off by itself or become unresponsive (with the blue light blinking in sleep mode. The only fix is to pull the battery and restart.
Here is what I've tried..
Browse the hell out of forums (mainly yours)
Changing stock settings.
Flashed a custom ROM to see possibly it's the stock rom was broken. Same issue
Used my battery to see if it was a bad battery.still didn't fix it
Flashed a different kernel to see if the kernel is to blame. No dice.
Wiped to stock using Odin. Nuh uh.
I'm pretty much out of options.
I'm thinking about sending it back.
Hers has Synergy on it atm. If no one has any options left, can I just Odin back to stock, lock the bootloader, and use triangle away?
Thanks

What build was your Synergy ROM? I've had difficulties with any ROM after about 3/23 due to some problems with the whole 3.4 thing. I'm not familiar with the Synergy ROM (obviously I've heard of it, but I don't like the stock "feel") and the problems that I've encountered have been on AOKP and CM based ROMS. But you may want to try flashing an earlier build. I went back to a build of the ROM I use from 3/13 and the problems I had that were similar to the ones you described stopped.
I've been running synergy for months now, and with almost all of their different releases. I have never had random reboots like that though. If you are using r420, or pretty much any of the newer releases, make sure you are doing a full wipe and not restoring any app data. That's the only way to make sure it isn't the ROM causing it. If it's still a problem, use that manufacturer warranty
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
SynergyROM is awesome agreed. I had similar problems at one point due to my voltage settings. Not all phones are created equal. Increased voltage and changed governor to 'on demand' because 'interactive x' had problems at the moment.
Some have just flashed a different kernel but imo ziggy is a genius and I will rock his kernel as long as he makes one.
The issue is one one of the builds ziggy and I think phones with rev4 couldn't handle the low volt
The blue light blinks or stays on for a bit like when booting.?
Clearly..... It your phone does it on a stock kernel,
I highly doubt the software is causing it.
It sounds like somewhere across the line you have a hardware issue.
Oh damn...hardware..that's what I suspected. Should I do the three steps (odin, re-lock , triangle away) and send it back to Amazon?..or sammy?
And will they know if I messed with it?

I'm having the exact same problem with the latest AOKP and CM10.1. I reverted back to an older version to see if this fixes the problem.

triangle away first then odin, since you need root to use triangle away. re-lock not necessary if you flash a stock image.

+1. Also, Odin will not up your flash counter unless your flashing something that isn't stock......Odin as the last step will leave you at out of box stock.

[Q] System Update fails installation and keeps returning

Hey guys,
Hoping someone here might be able to help me get rid of the bane of my existence right now. I've been reading all over and using various methods other people seem to have had success with but nothing is working for me.
I have a Samsung Galaxy Victory 4G from Virgin Mobile. I'm also responsible for 2 others that are having the same issue.
A while back I had rooted all our devices and put TWRP on them but have total stock rom.
A few weeks ago we all started getting this system update prompt that lets you install now or later. If we tried to install it with TWRP it just boots into TWRP. So I put the stock recovery back on and took the prompt and let it reboot. It begins installing but halfway through I get a red yield sign and it stops and reboots the phone. If we go this route the prompt usually doesn't show up again for days.
So I went and tried custom recovery and custom rom next. Didn't get the update on the custom rom until the next morning when I woke up. Went and got a perfect custom recovery/rom package for the phone and went total stock. Same issue as before where it gets halfway through and fails.
I've tried navigating to the root/cache folder as another thread suggested and renaming the update stored there but the update has never shown up in that directory.
Basically now, periodically this prompt continues to pop up, sometimes very frequently on the foreground of whatever you're doing on the phone and constantly reminds/annoys the hell out of us.
I'd take a screenshot but it hasn't reappeared in 2 days since I last took the update and it failed.
Appreciate any help from anyone!
Your phone needs to be stock for the update to work. No custom recovery, no root, no ROM. Flash back the official stock firmware and the update should work.
