I just came across LauncherPro Beta in the market. Man it's fast. Smoothest scrolling I have seen on any launcher.
http://www.launcherpro.com/
I'm very impressed with it
Wow! you're right, the scrolling is so much smoother than stock. I don't like the icons at the bottom though. I'm gonna try switching them with NinjaMorph
wow yeh...once the docks are customisable then this is the best launcher out there...easy
How do you activate the home screen previews?

I'm loving it. It's super fast and like the new screen selection overview
not bad, in fact, it's very good and responsive; couple of things that i'd like
1. most of you have already mentioned customizable docks (the only one i'd actually like to remove is the contact and replace it with market)
2. remove the text on the homescreens (like helixlauncher) for shortcuts/widgets
Holy crap this IS fast. Hope they make the dock a little bit like Helix2, and it'll be perfect.
Wow amazing!! A few things still need to be implemented (love walls, custom dock) but the Dev has already stated he is working on it. A few other things, there is no home icon once you're in the app drawer, you have to press the back button to access the home screens again. Also, there is no '3D effect' with the drawer scrolling.
Will be my default wall for sure after those issues are resolved. GREAT start though!
Noob question....How do you switch between launchers? I had Launcher pro activated then went to settings, manage applications and force stopped it to go back to the original I had running but now want to turn back on LauncherPro to compare and not quite sure how to do that, thanks for any help

clear defaults for the launcher, press home, and then it should ask what launcher you want to use.

On the same screen, press the 'Clear Defaults' button. Then press the home button on your phone and it should prompt you to select the launcher of your choice

Go into Settings> Applications> Manage applications> scroll to whichever launcher you have set to default, select it, then select "clear defaults." After that, when you press the Home button you'll have the choice of which launcher to use and can set your option as default.

an easier solution is to use the free app on the market called Home Switcher
i just installed it and it's very simple and easy to use; one click and you can switch default to whatever launcher you have installed
It would be great if we could get a system app version.
I think I got it, thanks!

you may want to try ADW launcher and HelixLauncher (1 or 2)
Damn. After about 30 mins of use, I've decided that Helix has some serious competition here. I've been asking arctu/Faruq to add the Sense UI style home screen previews for months now, and he just couldn't do it. This is kick ass. If only it allowed pinch gesturing to trigger the previews.
Awesome Launcher, thanks for sharing!
not sure if this is the right place to post this, but i would like to say a few things about the ADW which came with the x10 root
this is all to do with the apps screen, it doesnt swipe left or right to switch between pages if you touched an app icon, unlike the normal app screen which overrides the icon select when it detects a swipe/drag move... so the only place you could swipe to switch pages is at the bottom corners since there are no app icons there
the other problem is that the app screen wont fit all the icons properly in landscape mode, the lowest row is off the bottom of the screen... and it is also impossible to swipe left be because the only free spaces on the screen is on the right

Unselect the 'Horizontal Drawer' in ADWsettings>Drawer. This gives you the normal Android style app drawer with vertical scrolling, which works without the flaws you mentioned. It also works way smoother than the stock SE drawer.

I can't comment on this as I don't use the Horizontal 'Galaxy S' style.
I use Zeam Home launcher & i'm very happy with it

AS Vin87 said, just find the option to turn the "drawer" back to vertical scroll. It works MUCH better, and unlike the stock drawer, it remembers your position so you don't have to keep scrolling down to find the last app you used.
Since I switched to vertical scrolling drawer in ADW, it's become my favourite launcher.
Thanks for the tip. I liked the idea of horizontal scrolling, but as the OP mentioned it keeps mistriggering.
hey guys quick question on home replacement apps, do you remove the original “home" from ignore list in task killers, surely having adw and home open is unnecessary? I have an un rooted phone, does root remove stock se home launcher?

The original home does no harm. You can let it be on the kill list of any app killer but it'll keep launching back. If you are really picky, then root your phone and get rid of Launcher.apk.
The root does no removal or cleanup, the devs realized and avoided doing anything like that because all of a sudden "n00b" users started asking them back.
Take your time, understand how your phone behaves... App killers are really un-necessary on Android unless you have a really misbehaving application that hogs resources. Root is useless if you don't know what to do with it.
thanks for reply.
I'd been thinking along those lines, only have taskiller installed to see what's running, the memory management makes sense to me, what's the point of having it if its not being used!
not going to get into rooting until custom roms are possible as there aren't any features that I need.
back to playing with the (many!) settings in adw.

Anyone with CM6 or above replace the long click home..
Finally!!
doesnt work with home replacements
only on stock froyo launcher
if you have CM RC3 you can change the long press on home and DONE you have it as your long press home button! and then set which ever launcher you like
I hope this app gets popular. It has amazing potential and will be great if lots of people start using it (like Launcher Pro) It's definitely great with Cyanogen Mod using the long press home replacement!
Can't wait to see some coverflow and other animations
This has the potential to be pretty great it just needs a better way to close apps (swipe up palm OS style maybe? or just an X in the corner). I get pages of recent apps thats counter productive sometimes, but pretty cool start

when you have visual task switcher open, you can press menu and get to settings, where you can choose what home app to launch, as well as whether to bind the app to the home key or search key (long press)
Thank you! This is fantastic when configured to replace the long-press home task switcher.
Love it although I'd love the ability to pin apps to the screen(kinda like the task bar in windows 7) so they appear whether they are open or not. Preferably with some way of distinguishing an open task from a non open one.

Why do you say that? it works great with launcherpro.
You open the app, then press menu setting, and set launcherpro as home.
The i mapped a gesture of my app drawer (middle icon) to swipe for visual tasker and all done.
That's smart as hell, I just replaced the home function using Cyan 6 but I'm gonna set that up as well...
I hope in future updates it allows long press to just press an X and close an app (or remove from the list) I don't like the whole screen with the forcestop button

Home: Launcher Pro Plus; Long Search: Power Strip; Long Home: Visual Task Manager
on Android 2.2, N1
btw here's the dev site http://www.androidpolice.com/2010/0...al-task-switcher-now-available-on-the-market/
Awesome!!! I am using it right now.

Nice program!
Have pretty much covered all my multi-tasking bases now heh
Home key: Launcher Pro
Long press Home key: Visual Task Switcher
Long press Search key: QuickDesk
Seems useless for those of us with Enom, since we don't have the control for long press home.
Either I choose long search, which cuts my easy access to Voice Search, or I choose short home, which makes everything else involving the home button really awkward. Poor implementation.

I'm pretty sure the developer can't do anything about that, since apps don't have access to long press home at all.

Your assumption is correct. Currently on the 2408 nightly.
I wish the preview cards were a little bit bigger. Either that, or if the previews had a slightly higher resolution? Other than that, it's pretty cool!
I wish there was an option to force the preview cards smaller, or even better, icons only. Going from 15 recent apps (CM6) at once to 9 is a downer.
Also, for some reason new items sometimes randomly pop up on the left side, and sometimes on the right side, so you have to scroll back and forth. That really slows down app switching. And sometimes, apps like Voice don't even show up at all for some reason, which make me waste even more time.
Great looking app and great idea, but had to uninstall as it was actually slowing down alt-tabbing.
- Disabling left/right scrolling (force 1 screen),
- Allowing an option for icon-only view,
- And fixing the bug that some apps don't show up will make me reinstall.
Hello,
I have a idea for a launcher but don't have the programing experience to make it. Unless a launcher is much easier to do then I think. I have done some light app dev in eclipse for android and would be willing to try it my self if someone can point me in the right direction.
I'll put the idea out there and anyone who wishes to use it I only ask to be credited with the original concept.
I call it "No Home"
The idea is that I am constantly hitting back or home to return to the home screen before I press the power button and put the phone to sleep. But the home screen provides nothing I really need, at least not necessarily. So Instead pressing home button will open a app drawer, I like the one Zeam uses since on return you are back where you left it. Also Some of the others allow changing of the number of Icons wide and tall are displayed, This would be a nice addition since I have a EVO and four by four has a lot of wasted space. Also it needs to be able to do folders. This allows for apps to be organized.
On boot you are opened to the App Drawer/screen. Then from there you just leave the phone at what ever app it is in when letting it sleep, if you need to open a new app either long press home for a recent app or press it to get to the app drawer/screen.
There would be no widgets unless they could go in the app screen, The notifications will have to do. I'm sure a always running notification that provides some kind of folder or something for widgets could be developed.
I know this would not be the launcher for everyone, maybe not even you. I also realize it sounds like this or that launcher or that I could achieve the same thing by not pressing the home button, but I think as a App it would be faster and lighter then any home screen launcher could be.
Nice!

Good call. It is not far off, and I'd consider it, but I'm not going for a iOS Home screen, I like the vertical drawer very much over horizontal and, I'm not sure if it is just my phone but I saw serious lag on vlauncher.
I guess What I'm looking for is really just a launcher missing the home screen. A striped down launcher. I need a app drawer that will allow me to get to my apps fast, and I have about 200 apps on my phone. Having to go home then press the app drawer button is two steps vs my proposed one. Also 16 apps vs 25 (for higher res screens like the EVO) makes a big difference.
I think I saw a how-to in a starting with android lesson that had a home screen lesson. Maybe I'll give that a shot... Have to find it again.
Still welcome any other suggestions or help, thanks for the ones so far.

AWD Launcher (and I think other launchers as well) has an option to launch the drawer when pressing the home button.
(You can still go to the desktop by tapping a on-screen icon: convenient for incedental consult of some widgets)

Ah, I found the home button binding setting in AWD Launcher, I forgot how configurable AWD was, and how much I liked it. This is close, When you press home it brings you to the home screen and a second tap brings up the app launcher, which you can set the number wide and tall the icons are.
This will work, between this and just leaving the phone at it's present state vs. pressing home before putting it to sleep, it basically solves my issue.
It would be a neat add on of AWD to Reverse the order of the home screen operation, maybe I'll suggest a option for that.
Thank you everyone for your suggestions.
Hi, Today I boought a Moto G, and immediately upgraded and rooted it to Android 4.4.3. (Previously I'd been using a Galaxy S2 and a Xperia S)
The first thing I noticed is the changes in the app drawer, which I hate. I do not like that widgets and apps are mixed, I mean I liked the cycling thru apps in Jelly Bean, and having to select the widgets tab to cycle thru widgets.
Another thing I noticed is that the Moto G doesn't have an options button. While in the App drawer, all 3 buttons are redundant:
Left side button (Where options usually is) is now back, which takes you to the homescreen...
Middle button (Home) Takes you home .... -In Jelly bean you could long press to open recent apps-
Right side button - Opens recent apps
With that in mind you can tell that you're losing a lot of customizing options, for example, I used to click options and hide apps in Galaxy S2, or sort apps alphabetically, by use, recent install, etc...
I guess my questions is: Is there any way to get those features back using the stock launcher?
To sort apps customly, to separate widgets and make the app drawer cycle thru apps like it's supposed to?
I appreciate the help
I assume the launcher you are using is the stock launcher provided in Android.
If you want more options in the app drawer then it would be better to install another launcher.
My prefered launcher is Apex but I know that a lot of people are using Nova as well.
Both very smooth launcher with lots of options.

Hi Mickey, thanks for your reply.
Yes, I was using stock launcher at the moment of the question, the question basically was if it was possible with stock launcher... I assumed it was not so I downloaded Nova Launcher, but it also doesn't have the option to customly organize apps, like dragging and dropping one before the other in the drawer. If I hold on an app it takes it to the home screen which is not what I want
Also with Nova I could only separate widgets from apps if I made the drawer scroll vertically, I want horizontal with multiple pages, but widgets on a different tab.
What custom launcher has the option to do these things?
Thank you again for your time
I think Solo Launcher has the features you require.

I've tried both solo and Nova launcher but neither has the features I'm looking for, solo offers the option to sort apps but from presets like 'alphabetically, most used, recently used " but I want to sort them manually, I don't understand why I'm having so much trouble finding this option when on previous Android devices was as simple as drag and drop

There are no changes in the app drawer. The stock Google launcher has always worked this way. If your previous devices worked differently, then you were not using the Jellybean launcher, which looked and worked exactly the same way as you are describing.

Nope, that was never possible with stock Jellybean. If it worked that way on your S2, it's either because you had installed a third-party launcher or because that is how Samsung's own launcher (is it still called Touchwiz?) worked. I have never used anything other than Nexus or Google Play Edition devices (as well as played around a bit with Cyanogen), so I couldn't say for sure.
I used to click options and hide apps in Galaxy S2, or sort apps alphabetically, by use, recent install, etc...

No, because they were never in the stock launcher. You will have to try various other third-party launchers until you find one you like. I'm generally happy with the stock one, so I'm afraid I would be useless at recommendations.
Good luck,
