Can't he just get another note 2? I think the price is about the same or even lower than S4 or HTC One. Also the choice is based on personal preference their both great devices.

well I spent a about two hours playing with both phones, both were very good phones, what made
the HTC stand out to me was first pinch and zoom , when i did this on the S4 it would not realign the
words into a single column , which meant i had to scroll side ways on the website while I read a article. I used CNet , Fox news , phonenet , TechRadar to test..
next was the sound ,
For such small speakers , the HTC One put out decent sound, makes it nice if you just want some back ground music
with out having to use the headphones...granted I use it in semi-quite environments ..
The S4 had a plastic feel to it while the HTC one felt really solid, you can twist the S4 where the HTC One you cannot..
I did give the S4 a solid going over, it did have a kinda cool thing where it would follow your eye movement, it work but
but needed improvement... I would have rather seen Samsung spend money on the phone then marketing
like a metal case.. and HTC gives you the tools to unlock the boot.
Depe ds on your preference. One has the stronger body, and S4 has a removable back, which means interchanging batteries, and getting custom designed backs for it. The S4 also has a micro sd (sorry if this was mentioned, for I'm only skimming through), which the One provides more storage for the same price.
The S4 focuses much more on the software features, while the One focuses more on the design of the hardware and software without being too intrusive or overbearing. Sense 5 UI found on the One is pretty sweet and lighter than previous versions of Sense, and also lighter than TouchWiz. TouchWiz is much more fun to explore with the many things that you can do with it.
They both have similar processor, with an exception of the clock speeds (the S4 is 200MHz faster, but the average user - and even some power users - will not tell the difference.
I'm intentionally omitting my preference, for that is irrelevant to your decision. I'm not trying to influence your decision, but provide my unbiased opinions. (Hopefully, no one has enough insight to my decision...)

If you want a very good phone for its design quality, go with the HTC One.
If you are a Samsung fan and longtime user, go with the S4
Go for HTC One

If you can live with the 4 MP camera of HTC One then go for it. That's the only weak point of One against S4 I believe.

Well, as the title reads, which phone should I get next? My AT&T contract will be fulfilled in the next couple of months so, I've been looking at available AT&T phones. I currently have an HTC Desire Z and I love the size of it - easy to put in and take out of my jeans pocket. Most of the new phones I see are so big they should come with a back pack for them. Can anyone recommend a late model, fast phone that isn't as huge as the HTC One X and Samsung G3? And, please don't say "Iphone".
No offence but they don't sell those phones without camera anymore welcome to 2012 almost 13 everything is big now TV's cellphones etc

I think ~5" is the perfect size for a smartphone - big enough screen to see things and enjoy it, but small enough to still use effectively with one hand.
Honestly, I remember the first cell-phone I ever used and it was WAY bigger.
If you do want something smaller, though - I don't know, I'd probably look at international phones that would work with ATT, or just go into an ATT store or such and look around. The Galaxy S3 Mini is smaller, but I don't know how well it will work on ATT and what you could expect (it lacks LTE, I've heard). It also depends on the performance you're expecting.
have you considered one of those quality Chinese android handsets ?
things like the Newman N1, GooPhone, ZTE V970 etc ?
I think you should go with Galaxy S3. I am also using this phone last some months it's a superb mobile phone bacase it has 4.8 inch Superb Super AMOLED display with saturated colors and high contrast with 8 megapixel camera with autofocus, flash and HD video recording, 4.0 android operating system, Quad-core 1.4 GHz Processor and 2050 mAh battery capacity. You can read full details here:

Thanks for all the replies! I do plan to look around the AT&T store but sometimes its a little overwhelming when I start diving into the specs for every phone.
I was not aware of the "quality" made chinese phones; I may look into that.
Thanks again for the help and if there are anymore recommendations please, keep them coming.

Getting my kid a new phone for Christmas (she has my old Droid X). Was contemplating an IPhone, soley because of the incredible speech-to-text features (something my Bionic is woefully poor at) Sales dude at Verizon showed me what a Samsung can do in that realm....was utterly impressed....no diference from the 'Sirry' IPhone thing (apparently it hinges on a google service)
what's your budget? Desire z is mid range so if your budget is about the same then look at Galaxy S2.
Budget will be determined by AT&T having a phone I will settle with on a contract extension so, I guess my budget will be $200~300.

Best phone on the market at the minute (*arguably*) is the ASUS Padfone 2.. but sadly it isn't available in the US (no US release date mentioned yet either).. so would probably say the LTE version of the Samsung Galaxy S3 would be a contender..
I'm not really looking at the IPhone 5 but will the IPhone 5 sync with my google contacts and google calendar? That's one thing I really like about the android phones. From my research the iphone 5 can be made to sync with all my google stuff but how effective/accurate is it? Are there any bugs or issues with this?

Hey everyone. A sad time indeed. My 1yr old doing his exploring has thrown my beloved one s down the stairs and broke her the case cracked open and some insides were broken. Only faults I can find so far are that my sound no longer works. Speaker nor headset so I am looking to replace her. I bought her the first day T-Mobile released the one s and loved her since having rooted her and running a great 4.2.2 ROM on her since she never left ICS.
Though it brings me to near tears to ask this, does anyone have any recommendations for a new phone? I heard something about a new HTC one series and other thoughts are nexus 4 and galaxy s4. I prefer top of the line devices but easy to root and good ROM supports are a must.

It completely depends on your preference. Hardware is constantly evolving and so are options. You say you love your one s but you need to ask yourself what you love about it. If you love the comfortable sense feeling, you could look into the new htc one, though sense 5 is a vast difference from previous versions. If you want the best hardware on the market go with the s4. If you like the smaller size check out the nexus 4. Personally, I would recommend the S4. Guaranteed huge rom support and as top of the line as you could get this year. Do some research and see what fits you. Im a Note 2 user of about 3 months and love it more every day.

If you want build quality (emphasis - it is stunning), like HTC's sense rom, want the beats audio/boomsound, and maybe other things I definitely would recommend the HTC One. Even with my perfect-condition One S was contemplating the switch to the One but decided to save money. Since you want a new phone, there's nothing stopping you! The phone is also slightly larger at 4.7" (whereas the One S is 4.3").
Let us know what you choose.
Edit: Awkward didn't realize you had actually bought the Nexus 4 already. Great quality build budget phone that is on the smaller side too. (Just a little outdated as the Nexus 5 is being anticipated but it will still get quick android updates).

Are you tied to a contract at all with your N4? The specs appear to be better on the newer phones, but you must hold strong and stay away from hype and read some good Vs. reviews. Personally I'd hold on another year to the N4 (quality, solid, well supported device) and see what next year has to offer.

I understand but what might be a better performer for me may be different for someone else and previous devices don't matter, now is what matters. All the reviews online will help you more, trust me. And the nexus 4, HTC One and galaxy s 4 are all fast phones so it won't even matter. What matters is if you like stock android, if you like sense or touchwiz, if you're ok with a plastic phone or if you need a premium looking phone, if you need the best performer in the camera... there are so many factors here and again we all have different opinions, even some of us are having a hard time choosing but if speed is what you're looking for than the nexus 4 is very fast I can tell you that now.

No idea what is latest. And as far as I know from reports, it seems the Scandinavian xxuame2 is less laggy than others (that's my current one btw) and that some areas has a different version as it's latest version.

I compared i9505 and HTC One side by side, and One was smoother. I guess SGS4 doesnt have well optimized software yet.
Perhaps. Or the sw you have isn't the best version they've made so far. As mentioned, it differs from region to region it seems.
Can't say I feel a huge difference between my 920 snd my s4 in terms of smoothness. And 920 is pretty damn smooth.
The again it could be my fw contra yours that makes the difference.
So basically I think it's hard to compare one to s4 since there's several totally different "latest sw" on the market. Probably for both phones.

In the age old battle of HTC vs Samsung I can almost guarantee history will repeat. Samsung always comes out on top with better hardware, firmware, updates ect.. So yeah, maybe a stock ONE is slightly smoother than a stock S4 but give developers some time we'll see who takes prize.

Just sold my HTC One device and kept my 9500, I thought the HTC One was a pretty boring device...
I have done the comparisons myself for the sake of what to keep, and all of them reviews and comparisons and not real, what is real is what I like not what others show me. Lags and whatever do not bother if I have to give up 50% of the value add features I get with the S4.
Big regrets to spend the money on the HTC One....
Thanks

I personally think that samsung went with 4.2.2 which is buggy and slight laggy by itself. They also had less time to optimize the firmware. I have a lot of hopes that the s4 firmware will be optimized as much as the htc one in terms of performance.
Sent from my GT-I9500 using xda premium
Might be something off with the 9500 and it's sw?
Not sure what the bugs in 4.2.2 are, haven't encountered any so far that I've noticed.
Maybe I got lucky with having my fw or maybe I'm just oblivious. I don't know.
Sent from my GT-I9505 using xda premium
The multi tasking on the HTC One seemed faster because the SGS4 has the slow stock multi tasking animation which was introduced in 4.2.2.
Turn off all animations in developer options and see which is faster
Many are saying that the S4 IS HAVING SOFTWARE ISSUES BUT ALSO see that htc one is running 4.1.2 and maybe in 4.2.2 it will be more better!!
In my case here.. I asked my self what exactly do I want in a phone.. Build quality over functionality? Boom sound over 5inches screen? In the s4 I really got functionality while d one looks like a fast HTC X.. In terms of pixels, u can't differentiate cos anything over 400ppi is awesome. I hardly listen to music with the outer speakers so boom sound is not my thing. With the Samsung s4 I'm never bored. Games performance and bench marks kills the one. It's all about individual choice.

Most people that uses the one primary got it cos the built. I prefer the s4 cos of the functionality. The one came with a blinkfeed same thing as flip board. There is nothing new in the one period.

Wrong, its much better implemented then flipboard could ever be.
S4 for me:
5 vs 4.7 on the same candy bar size, while being lighter.
When I decided there was no One Google version.
Having handled both for a while the One lost its "better quality" moniker. I don't like the feeling of carrying a metallic object in my pocket. It is nice to look at, but felt like a foreign object even holding it. And by the way the One is not that "premium" of a construction. Polished aluminum is not as nice as polished stainless steel (as seen on expensive watches)
Bottom line if the one was last year's flagship, it would have been an excellent choice. Now the s4 is simply better.

Ah but the build quality of the One is far worse than the quality of the s4. Thats why I thought you meant the s4 was the build quality and the One the functionality.
Harder to fix when damaged.
More prone to disfigurement upon impact.

As someone already said, "different strokes for different folks."
I understand people preferring the smooth edges of the S4. Me? I personally like the "sharp" edges of the One. Makes me feel as though I have a better grip.
People's hands vary massively. What's right for one is wrong for another.
I have to be honest though, I like many, really wish Samsung had tried a little harder to differentiate it from the S3. I felt I had to go for the One as HTC really do deserve a lot of credit (and my money) for putting so much effort into their device.
Still, I understand Samsung want people who know very little about phones to recognise the S4 immediately. Making it look like the S3 is the best way to achieve that goal.
I am surprised so many XDA folks went for the S4 mind. I suppose it's all about specs for a lot of people. That's why I plumped for the S2 a few years back.

I have bought phones. HTC one designed is much, much better, but with quality assembly issue.. I changed 2 one, and no 0 gap... Whatever, one is very different designs and more premium feeling
I really like the look and feel of the S4, nothing wrong with it and all this talk of plastic being cheap is nonsense imo the phone feels properly made and i have no issues with it and i prefer it to my htc one and I dont have to worry about the body being scratched, yes I have seen htc one videos but i still dont trust it. also i have no issues with weak screen on the s4.
I love my S4 but to put in other terms there is someone that mentioned the phone is easy to break well yes it is but if you take care of it correctly this would not be such a issue I have a Otterbox Defender series for all 3 of my S4s I have dropped my S4 3 times since I've had it, I dropped it onto concrete and have had no issues this by far is the lesson learned by many people dropping any phone is to buy a case. I am unsure about why the S4 is breaking in someones pocket I hold mine there all the time and had no issues but once again have a otterbox defender case on it maybe thats the saver unsure... I have never seen the HTC but then again already used my upgrade so guess have no need to
Bwahahahahaha, this thread is so funny !!!! I wanted to buy the S4 even if it was just an S3 with a real premium finish,I would have bought it.Plastic is definitly not premium, even it's more beautiful than the S3 build materials.10 millions S4 were sold over the world, but the question is:how many if it was aluminium? This number is just because of their marketing force.Look what HTC have done, they're not in the top 3,nor in the top 5 smartphone sellers rank anymore, but they wanted to make an outstanding comeback, and create this amazing phone, they listen to customers expectations, they sold 5 millions !!!! I'm not a pro HTC,nor Samsung, nor Apple,I love innovation, revolution and when you're ranked 1st or 2nd,you have to keep working hard to keep your crown.
