I rooted and have the CWM Touch Recovery installed that I flashed through Odin when I was rooting it. When I make a backup, they seem to all be named with the same date backing to December 31, 1979?
Is there a way to rename my backups before they are made so that I can easily remember which one is which?

My cwm saves 2013-06.21 format. There are some other numbers across there but I forgot them. What version does it say you are on.

I had the same issue with CWM on my GS3. I switched to TWRP. It allows me to set the backup name before I start the backup process.
I'm not sure if recent versions of CWM have this ability now. I haven't used it in wrote some time.

Nandroid manager from the play store will rename your cwm nandroid backups, and be reliable at doing it.

I put the latest touch recovery from clockworkmod into a flashable zip.
It works with ICS. It is the same recovery as the one you would have to pay for to install with ROM manager.
TO INSTALL CWM TOUCH RECOVERY........

Okay, so I ran a backup and restore test on cm9 and cm10. I thought it was sk8t's version causing me problems restoring backups but the issue is similar on this build.
The backup file that gets created doesn't contain all the data for a full restore -- much of it gets stored in the "blobs" folder in cwm (someone more knowledgeable than me can probably explain better). Also, it takes a REALLY long time to create a backup.
Using the standard restore doesn't work on (on this or on sk8t's version). I keep getting "error restoring system" message and it won't restore. I tried to do an advanced restore doing each part individually but that didn't work either.
Restoring an old rom from before they changed the backup method works fine though. I haven't tried restoring using ROM Manager yet but I may try that next--I'm thinking that's what the new system is designed for...
EDIT: Rom manager fails too. Same error restoring system message.
Please post here if you can successfuly backup and restore cm9 or cm10 (or any other roms) so we can figure out if its just me

Did a backup on CM10 Alpha 1. It took awhile but didn't seem to take any longer than a CM 5.x backup. Modified a few things, updated a couple apps, and then did another backup - went a bit quicker. Doing a restore now but it's past the restoring system portion so I'm assuming it'll all be good. I'll edit this if it craps out at some point.
As for the blobs, this is new to CM6.x and from what I understand is supposed to make backups a little quicker and use less space as it will only backup what's been changed since a previous backup instead of the entire thing like CM5.x. Not sure at all on all the technical details but I'd suspect the blobs contain what's been changed at the point of backup and each backup "container" file indicate which blobs to restore...
EDIT: Restore completed just fine.

I always like to keep a solid backup and then after numerous changes back up again and delete the old one. Looks like it's back to old faithful 5.8.1.3 for me.

Honestly i prefer twrp recovery.. just wanted to provide this for those that needed it.
But, since TWRP does an UNCOMPRESSED backup i can have a nandroid backup done in a little over 2 minutes. Same for restore.. very fast.
TWRP can be set to compress the backup.. but i prefer speed over less space.

I'm not sure if I follow what the point would be? I thought the same, but after reading that and doing a few tests, I'm confident this will do just as well - if not better.
Might be worth mentioning/requesting from Koushik Dutta depending on your reasoning or need.
I think I figured out what the problem was for me in not getting backups to restore (but someone please post if you disagree). I was getting an "Error while restoring /system!" message every time.
Every time I make a backup I go into Root Explorer and change the backup name so that I know which rom it is. Today I did a backup and didn't change the backup name and I was able to restore it successfully.
Changing the name of yesterday's backup to it's original name, however, did not fix the problem. Those backups still won't restore.

I've always changed the name of my backup folder to make it more descriptive. One thing I read along time ago was that it only works if you don't include any spaces in the changed folder name. And I've never had any problems with restoring any of them. However, if you indeed did not include any spaces, then maybe it's been changed in CWM 6.

Didn't add any spaces. I only added cm9 or cm10 to the end of the file name (that's how I know I changed it back to the original names when I tried to restore yesterday's backups).

never had issues changing names of back up folders, what did you use to change the folder name , you could have a space at the end of the file name and dont even know it, use backspace to delete it, if u know dos try its naming conventions
sorry but how is this recovery different from sk8's recovery? That one's also CWM Touch 6.0.1.0 and also flashable zip ... ?

This app is very useful. Backup all your apps and than flash them with cwm. Sort of like titanium backup with a extra feature.

How is this app different from go backup? Instead of flashing .zip file I restore my app+data backup from go backup. Any advantages?
I use titanium for my backup most of the time but I have used this before and it's pretty spiffy. Wrap all your apps into one huge zip file and flash them back all at once. I would say the advantage is... in the eye of the beholder? Actually I just put titanium pro in a zip and use it to do the rest. I could never get it to zip itself in a way that would work for me.

I have been trying out the CM10 nightlies for the last month or two and they were generally pretty good. However i recently found some issues that cause it to reboot using an app i use frequently for work so i decided to restore my stock ROM. This is where I ran into my issue. I backed up all my user apps and their data with titanium backup before i rolled back to stock, which was 105 apps.
However when I go to do a batch restore in titanium it tells me I only have 53 backups. I have a backup of the CM10 rom i made before I restored stock just in case something happened so i went back to that. When i check Titanium there it says i have the 105 backups. What's going here. When I return to the stock ROM why isn't it recognizing half the apps i have backed up?
Under preferences in TB click on the backup folder location and let it scan your device. Maybe cm10 had them stored on the external as default and stock is internal (or vice versa).

I did this already. It's selecting the correct folder and what's even stranger is that when I detect the folder, it says it has 105 items in it. But it won't restore half of them.
Do you have unknown sources checked under security?

Ok so I figured out how to access the apps, I changed the filters to show all apps. At some point I must have changed it to hide uninstalled apps and didn't remember because it was 2 or 3 months ago. Now I just need to figure out how to do the batch restore without having to manually press install for each and every app...
Hi guys
I just recently updated my ROM to its newest version and I am loving it so far (Beans 19). However, I'm pretty bummed that all my existing stuff on my phone is wiped because dirty flashing isn't recommended. With that said, is there a way (aside from TiBackup) where I can save my app data and other stuff and transfer it to my updated ROM? Thanks in advanced.
I ended up using Helium (available in play store) over titanium this time. I had a problem restoring from a 4.2 rom to a 4.3 using titanium. I have both apps in the paid version.

Titanium backup should work flawlessly regardless of android version. Did you restore system apps/data? If you did then that was your problem never restore anything related to system. The only exception is maybe call logs and SMS

I probably did, I'm still pretty new at this. For me, after that, I went with picking app data to back up and restore for only the ones I really needed with helium. I probably could have done the same thing with titanium.

I recommend giving TIBU another go. Remember in TIBU system apps are marked in red and users apps are marked in white. I recommend making a fresh backup in helium just until you get used to TIBU. I'm going to write you a small guide to TIBU
1. Go to batch actions (check box in top right)
2. Scroll to the very last option and click "delete all backups". This will give us a clean slate.
3. Go back to main screen and select schedules tab.
4. Click edit on first schedule. If no scheduled are listed then create one.
4a. Change it to "Backup all user apps". This will backup your downloaded apps every time the schedule runs regardless if the apps were modified/used since the last backup.
4b. If you only want it to backup the apps that were modified since your last backup then choose "Backup new user apps & newer versions".
5. Choose a time and day for schedule. Also choose of you want to run the schedule regardless of power level (AC charging/battery, etc)
Setting up backup for SPECIFIC system data like SMS & Call Log
1. Go to the backup/Restore tab. In the top right click "Edit Filters"
2. At the bottom click "Create Label". Give it a name (e.g. Calls/SMS). Now click "Add/Remove Elements".
3. Choose Call Log and Messages (SMS/MMS). Now hit the check mark in the top right. Give it a name if you haven't yet and hit save.
4. Now go back to schedules. Create a schedule and choose "Backup all system data". Pick the filter you created and pick a time for the schedule to run.
5. Done! If you want to know how to backup your backups to online storage like Dropbox/Box/Drive. You can set it in TIBU preferences and then edit the schedules you created to save to your online system automatically.

That is what I did, but I guess I didn't have the understanding of titanium that sandman helped explain. Next time I'll back up on both and start restoring with titanium first to see if I have better luck (I have flashed roms and restored with titanium before with success so I thought it was the 4.2 to 4.3 as sometime suggested to me, but I could have made a mistake with system files that time, I'm not sure). If I fail again I'll at least have the helium to restore.

Don't you think that if it was something feasible and worthwhile to do many of the developers would have
created something like that already after all these years?
The developers have already developed an excellent way of backing up and restoring android phones using
TWRP and CWM nandroid backup and restore functions in their custom recovery mode which everyone uses.
If you don't trust nandroid backups why not do a simple test and make some nandroid backups and restore each
of them one at a time to see if you can find any kind of issues, problems or difficulties with your phone after you
have restored each of the backups one at a time.
Have you ever created a nandroid backup which did not restore properly or know of anyone who did?
Also why not do a bit of research here in these xda forums and threads to see if you can find any posts here by
people who are having any problems, issues or difficulties using or restoring their nandroid backups.

I trust in my nandroid backups. The main reason I want to create a flashable zip with everything backed up in it is to have the ability to create a duplicate image of my phone and flash it on my wife's.

well if you really want to learn
here's a simple example of how you can build yourself a rom

keep in mind you can't use his updater-script and you need to adjust some of the commands to match the note 5
but for the most part all roms are the same
you need:
META-INF <Folder>
boot.img
system.apps.tar.gz
system.therest.tar.gz
and optionally > data.tar.gz
once you have these you essentially have a rom
There's also an app called "zip me" in the play store that will do exactly what I wanted.

If you want a duplicate image why not create two nandroids and copy one
to your pc then to your wife's phone since you say the phone is identical
which they would have to be in order to use the same backup.
Once the nandroid is on your pc you can simply copy it to your wife's
internal memory then restore using twrp.
I have about 5-6 nandroid backups of different roms for my phone.

I don't think I was clear in the op. I know how to create nandroids, and yes, I could easily do it that way, but what I really want to do is compile my rom, settings apps and app settings into a flashable zip instead. To further my knowledge so to speak.
