Best thing to scratch your screen - a credit card - Galaxy S 4 General

Somehow i didn't learn my lesson when i scratched my gs2. I had to do it again
Put my phone in my pocket with my card facing the screen. .result ? tinny, almost invisible scratches.
For me is like the grand canyon... they are there. Almost no one could see it, but those fuc**** are there.
So guys. . attention to those cards touching your screen..

I bought 20 Screen protectors from Ebay for 6 bucks, Anytime I see the slightest scratch I replace the screen protector.

Credit cards can collect very tiny deposits of quartz and other hard substances from being swiped in card readers and used in atm card trays.
This makes it not only relativley dirty... but dirty with very hard materials that can scratch GG.
Always wipe your credit cards clean before you pocket them with your phone... or... dont store anything at all in the same pocket.

I learned my lesson when GG2 first came out. I never saw any real scratches but when looked at under a light at an angle there were a ton of micro scratches. Here's the protector I use; they're on sale BOGO right now. They are wet apply, easy to put on, and dry so tight you really can't tell they are there. They also don't yellow or pull up over time. I'm still using the original set I put on my N2 last November.

Here's one on a One X...

Its not the credit card... its the sand (quartz) and dust that constantly rubbed against your screen while you were perhaps walking. Check a few videos in you tube where they tried sand paper on gorilla glass, it still got scratched.
GG is not scratchproof... its scratch resistant.

if you buy a $600+ phone it might be a good idea to get a screen protector for less than $.99. going back to the hd2 days when GG was said to be scratch proof which later we found out it wasn't. this is now 3rd gen GG and it still scratches. if you like to take care of your expensive "toys/work instruments" it doesn't hurt to protect. the value of your phone does go down after a few scratches but again its preference just like you said.

No offence but anybody who cares phone for $700 in pocket with other stuff even chevygums and then complains is stupid to me...thats all!!!

To me screen protectors are like condoms. You put rubber for protection but you get a different feel.
And I'm sure many here are willing to take the risk and not use 'em!

so heres the story. it was on my kitchen table. my cat jumped up on the kitten table. the phone fell OFF the kitchen table. it landed on my wood flooring, and BAYYM. shattered like a christmas orniment. i can say the screen is fragile.. very different from my Galaxy S phones, which have been dropped numerous times, landed on concrete, and have dropped inside of a machine at work (lol). guess this is why samsung desides to make those "cheap feeling" light weight builds..

It also depends on where the phone fell, screen first w.e , and and the energy when it hit the ground. The must have been hard.

Ouch.
Yeah man that sucks. I dropped my Vivid the exact same way except it was outside on concrete. I am assuming you didn't have a screen protector on? Some screen protectors are said to spread the impact and protect it better.
Is it easy to install the replacement screen?
Also $45 isn't bad at all. My wife recently did the same thing to her Samsung Infuse and it cost $150.

I really wouldn't say "fragile" as much as I would say it just happened to land in a manner that would cause it to break.

You weren't the first to break one...HTC was the first to break it when they released it.
This is relevant to my future interests. Did you successfully replace the screen? Is it true that the screen is laminated/glued to the LCD? How did you pry it apart? Can you post instructions on how you did it after the deed is complete?

If the rattle is around the camera area, don't worry about it, there's somewhere in a thread in here talking about it and if I remember correctly it has to do with the camera and is present in all of the devices.

Broke my screen this past weekend :(

Yep, broke my screen this past weekend.
Oddly enough, the LCD screen itself shattered, but the outer glass and digitizer were unaffected.
Swinging with my daughter at the park on Saturday, and forgot I had my phone in my back pocket until it was too late. Hopped off the swing and pulled the phone but it was too late

I do have to say that Corningware makes one heck of a glass (Gorilla Glass)! I would have half expected the outer glass to crack before the LCD screen!
Already ordered a replacement front assembly to the tune of $219. Using my daughters re-possessed iPhone 3gs right now, and it's horrible!
An expensive lesson learned.
Im sorry to hear that! I was under the impression we didn't have gorilla glass?? Maybe I was wrong?

Mine did the same thing back in December. Digitizer was fine, but the lcd was all cracked. We may not have gorilla glass, but what we do have sure is tough. Mine was from a drop about waste high. Since the Digitizer survived and the lcd did not, I dont see that the gorilla glass would have made any difference.Do these phones have a drop rating like an hdd does? I doubt it since it has glass.
Interesting. After hearing that Samsung doesn't use Corning's materials, I did a bit of research and seems Samsung has their own variant of hardened glass.
Call it what you will, but it's tough as nails

I belive it. A cat survived a 19 story fall not too long ago. Some guy lived after a 500 foot drop some years back.
This stuff happens all the time. But I wouldn't expect my cat to make a 19 story drop. Nor would I make future plans facing a 500 foot one.

The one thing I notice is there is nothing under the glass so it has the opportunity to give more...like in the ball test shown as opposed to having no room to give....I am sure the glass is stronger butility from my point if view that ability to give and flex helps with the resistance...I could be wrong but that's my 2 cents

Probably just people trying to scratch it on purpose and say it scratches easy.
If you're worried about scratching the screen, just get a .50 cent screen protector.
Always be safe than sorry.
I have a protector on mine but I've heard ppl complain they didn't do anything and it got scratches, they said the gorilla glass 2 is not as durable/strong as the 1st version, my x2 has gorilla 1, never put a screen protector on it dropped it couple of times, never got no screen damage, I've seen the test on YouTube when they drop any phone with gorilla glass 2 it cracks, shattered, got damage, versus any phone with gorilla glass 1 held up more, took more of a beating? Look at YouTube videos judge it yourself.

I usually never put a screen protectors on my phones because I'm generally pretty careful with what I do with them, but about a week in I already have a light scratch on my GSIII, nothing too noticeable but also not done intentionally. Going to put a VZW protector on it just because I'm OCD when it comes to that stuff.
I always have my phone in my left front pocket and only money/receipts and soft objects will go into that pocket, anything else like change and keys goes into the right.
Lol that video was sick

I heard that when you drop the ohone, the screen may break easier because the glass is attached to the display directly, which also means that if the glass shatters, the screen is dead, too. As opposed to the S II where they weren't attached and the display would be fine even when the glass would shatter.
The reason they attached them is to, make the phone thinner or something.

Ionic Guardian case still 75% off at Amazon

This case is still on sale on Amazon at around $15 incl delivery. Quite a few people have reported delivery issues (delays, cancelations, etc) but from what I've seen the people that have the case are pleased. Just so you know the case cones in two pieces (thanks All__fun). I think if someone wants a cheap but theoretically durable case, this is a good starting point. If you don't mind waiting.
It is nice and well made. It is definitely the bulkiest case I've had as of yet. Also it's difficult to charge using the lg wcp700. It works but has to be put on the charger precisely.[/QUOTE]
All__fun said:
let me just add,
That after having the phone with no case for about a week now,
adding this case truly adds girth to the phone.
Previously the phone would slide easily in and out of my pocket,
you can't tell in the picture, but the case is actually a 2 piece case, a soft inner case, that the phone slides into, and a hard outer cover that gives the phone it's design. (the white, black, pink, or blue distinction.)
This is probably the best case out right now for the phone, but I can't stress enough how thick and bulky the phone is now. If you are willing to sacrifice it's sleek design, this case offers good protection.
I don't have a screen protector on right now, so I cannot add whether or not this peels off or interferes with the protector.
I will also add that with the Ionic case on, when looking at the lock screen, I find it more difficult to swipe left and right between different lock screens. I have a screen lock pattern, and that registers my finger strokes rather than a swipe to a different lock screen.

SGP Spigen screen shield review

Hey guys,
I had a chance to review this new product by SGP and as usually I really really liked it.
I think it sits at a good price for the quality. HOWEVER, be sure to order the front/back combo as it is THE SAME price
enjoy!

Update :
The bubble in the bottom part never went away because there is dust under the shield and that is simply because I suck at installing them ..however I'm still very happy with the quality and the fact that I have another one that I can install once I get tired of this damn bubble (,each package has 2). It can get a little greasy tho.

Use tap to remove the dust or the sticker things that come with the Spigens.
Does anyone have a coupon for this?

Nice review! I think some poeple forget that the edges are curved a bit and its hard to make a screen protector that doesnt bubble up

Correct . screen shields can't go all around in this type of device. Kinda making me sad as its gonna be very hard to get a full glass screen shield which I love . let's see if SGP or any of the other companies are able to step it up and develop it

FYI, "front" version comes with 2 pieces of the front protector
"front and rear" comes with 1 for the front and 1 for the back
So, if you are already protecting the delicate back of the phone somehow, you might want to get the two-front version to have a spare one, so if you mess it up applying the first one you have a backup.
Even though I always somehow manage ton get dust under the screen on the first attempt I love SGPs screen protectors. The initial attempts were messed up but i ran the protectors under HOT water wiped them with my hands and they all installed flawlessly with no bubbles or dust. So if anyone gets these and manages to mess up on the first attempt just run it under hot water wiping it off and try again. I have the dual on my N4 and the matte on my N7, hope they make a matte for my N4.

it's not that hard. You use one to lift the edge of the screen protector and you use another piece to dab the underside where the dust is and then set it back down. Also try installing using the "hinge" method to get a dust free and much easier install.
How do you guys get 2? I received mine yesterday and only got 1 in the package

You probably ordered the Front & Back protector.
Just ordered an ultra oleophobic one and will let you know how it is when I have got it. I'm quite useless at putting on protectors too but have been practising a lot with cheap ones and I've got a certain way of doing it now. Squeegee is your best friend!!
Because I'm a Nexus b!tch and I like to run the latest source and binaries!! AOSPA!
Thanks for the review and it was great you showed actually installing the screen protector so often they just talk about it.

I can't decide with version I want. Is there much of a difference between the two when it comes to light glare? What about resistance to scratches (on the SP, not the screen itself). If you have a case that doesn't quite meetup with the SP edges, do you get a trough of crud after a while?

The Oleophobic protector is more prone to scratches than the Ultra Crystal version.
