So I have been playing between Nova and TW all morning now that I have rooted and froze most bloat plus did some kernel tweaking and set the governer to interactive. Must say my phone is quite the beast now but I wanted to see why my phone still runs a bit better on Nova over TW. When I launch with Nova and clear the memory, I end up between 690 and 700 some mb of used ram with about a gig available. With TW launched and memory cleared it ends up only clearing to about 982/1.78 , quite a bit more memory being used on TW. Not that this is significant but it appears maybe that TW just really sucks at memory allocation, or perhaps I have a faulty device. Obviously probably not but I'm just curious as to how Nova is crushing TW at the moment.
I noticed the same thing...a couple hundred or so less ram with Nova. Very zippy with Nova.
I have the same setup. This works way better then stock, honestly it bugs the hell out of me samsung released the phone with Touch wiz bogging down the system that much.

If you don't mind and have the time, could you post a complete list of your frozen apps as I would like to try and replicate your results under TW. Also do you have ANY other launchers enabled next to it like Nova or is this with TW the only unfrozen launcher.

I don't know... Having that many apps frozen is like not having a galaxy s4 at all. That's just my opinion though.

I didn't buy the phone to use the CRAP that Samsung calls a feature..
I bought the phone because of it's 5" 1080p display, the processor, the RAM, and it's size to weight..
To each their own I suppose but most all of the Samsung crap gimmicks don't work correctly to begin with..
I guess there's nothing that fits that form factor. I never understood the Cm community after the sgs2 but I guess these lag issues are starting to sound serious.
It's kind of disappointing. You shouldn't have to freeze anything to get a good user experience out of a phone. I have to admit that apple has been pretty consistent with this.
My sgs3 should have had 2gb of ram with its quad core. I love the phone, will never use an iPhone again. But can't deny they focus on releasing something with optimized software for their audience.

Most of the stuff I froze is because I don't use it, have no intention of using it and can care less about. Most of the stuff I froze was not to try and reduce lag..
Honestly, if I had to freeze a feature that I wanted to use just to get the phone functional it would be returned for a different phone in a second!
The only thing that I actually did to reduce lag was to turn all my animations to 0 and enable force GPU rendering.
If the Nexus 5, when announced, has a 5" 1080p screen the S4 will be for sale faaaaaaaaaast!

Yes to each his own then.
But for the customers experiencing lag, they shouldn't have to. This device was advertised to have all these features and to be speedy. I think without some criticism Samsung will just continue to not care about optimizing their software and adding more features.

So I froze some extra apps as your list almost matched mine except for a couple of things (more or less differences in use there). I also set all the dumb animations to 0 (already had forced GPU) and wow, now the keeps up with me and then some. Now I did still have buttery smoothness without the animation but I guess it was the animation the limited the speed of booting apps.
Also I pushed over the deodexed apps and framework, rebooted and running only under nova I clear with 520MB of Ram used, WOW!!!!!
All I got to say is that with the right customizing this phone is a god among insects, but it's really sad that it can't have this type of speed out of box. I would be interested though in seeing a brand new device, stock freshly booted compared side by side to mine and then ONLY enable Force GPU with the animations turned off for a good base comparison since I am now used to my devices speed.

****tttttttt mane That would be a dream come true! Long as Dan is true to his word about releasing the unlock eventually, we will get to see just that. Also running clean 4.2.2 on here might help clear up whether or not any of the lag problems out there are hardware based or software based but as it stands I'm with you and willing to bet that this is all software jacked up by Samsung and AT&T (but mostly AT&T).....

The official Galaxy S II Plus update landed today, as the first official 4.2.2 update for a Samsung Galaxy device. I quickly flashed it using Odin and here I will review it with screenshots and benchmarks.
Remember, after flashing the firmware you will need to wipe your device, otherwise crashes will start appearing every few seconds.
CAUTION: Flashing this firmware in the non-NFC version (I9105) will cause your device a hard brick, do NOT do it.
First thing you'll notice is the new lockscreen, which includes an update Ripple Effect and the new Light Effect that comes with the S4 (you can choose either of them as your default effect). There are also the lockscreen widgets that is a standard feature of 4.2.2, you can also disable or enable these. Also, you can set the lockscreen to contain a custom message such as 'Life Companion'. Lockscreen shortcuts are disabled by default but it is also possible to enable them from the Lock Screen Settings.

The homescreen sports a new weather widget as well as a clock widget, and the app drawer has seen some redesigning. The status bar is now transparent around Touchwiz and there is a quick toggles button in the notification panel, you can also access the quick toggles by swiping down the status bar with two fingers.
The settings app also sees the changes seen in the Galaxy S4 with the new tabbed design, and the gallery app has also undergone some changes. Also, you can now easily move most (not all) of your apps to your SD card, leaving you with quite a lot of space if you're using a large-capacity microSD card.
Performance seems to have improved as well, on 4.1.2 you'd get around 7700-7800 on Antutu Benchmarks, after updating, the score ranges around the 10000 mark. This is also notable in real-life performance as the device now seems snapper than before.

It has been 7h10m (now at 20%) since I disconnected it from the charger last time, I can't recall if I fully recharged it or not.
But the battery life seams outstanding, judging by the fact that the screen is sucking 53% of the battery, and the Android OS and Android System processes are taking 8% and 5% respectively.
my dirty flash is laggin like hell, many fcs too..

Hi my friends, i tested today the new rom 4.2.2 in my samsung galaxy s2 gt-i9105 plus, and as a lot of new options, it is great, the unique thing that i couldnt do is rooting the device as i could in version of android 4.1.1, does any one knows why ? or someone knows the solutions ?

Also, if you're going to move apps to SD card, better have an SD card with fast read speeds, or else the app is going to take a longer time than usual to load.

Wonderful. Though I bought Folder Mount app for $2 it's good to see finally moving apps is supported and a better battery life !

Slight regression:
Several stock apps (among them: Memo, S Planner, stock Music and Video player) can no longer be deactivated without root. So you can no longer get completely rid of Samsung apps if you prefer the Google versions. At least the battery hogging media share services can still be deactivated though.
Another regression i noticed is that the minimum media volume is quite a bit higher than before. Sucks when you're listening with headphones in bed. Additionally when you start and stop listening there is a crackling noise. I really liked this phone because it was perfect for this use case
Is there any way to correct this via a service menu?

I received an update message on my GT9105p device today. I accepted to do the update, then i let the phone to do its job. after a while, i noticed that the phone is stucked on the booting screen where the Samsung logo is shown. The system just doesn't want to boot I already tried to boot it on recovery mode, but it just shows that Android logo and a loafing bar from 0 to 100%. When it goes to 100%, it just reboots and gets stuck again on the Samsung logo. Can anyone help pleasE?

You can access download mode (home+vol down+power) ?
If yes go to sammobile.com and download a new firmware and flash it via Odin .
That's all .

I downloaded a firmware and installed it, but now i have problems with some apps: Instagram, Viber and Whatsapp. These apps do not connect to their servers, so I can't log in on those

I did the update via Odin, but there is one thing different from the review done in the first post (two actually). I do not see the new wallpapers AND I do not have the ability to set shortcuts on lockscreen's homepage like in the screenshot. I just don't have an option "Shortcuts.." in the lockscreen options. Don't know if it's right or if it's wrong. Before flashing I factory resetted the device.
I've got tons of it. Anyone else. No, I will not root.
Where are you seeing the lag? Chrome isn't so hot for me, but otherwise no lag. There are some apps you can turn off without rooting. Maybe it would be worth going through the list of apps and turning off whatever you can that you don't think you will use and see if that helps at all.
Yeah, stay away from Chrome if you want it smooth. I always have lag/stutter with Samsung tablets when browsing with Chrome. Stock Android? Chrome is usually quite happy. Basically, the stock browser works much better with this tablet. Turning off apps always helps. Also give it a few days for everything to settle in and all the apps are installed/updated. Oh, and...reboot!
With that said, I have still seen some occasional and minor stutter when swiping down for the menu and maybe switching certain full-screen apps. Otherwise at this point, the stock launcher itself and overall experience is fairly smooth. Can't say that with most non-stock android tablets.
There is perhaps a one or two second delay in opening certain apps. Not sure if that's just the time it takes to kick it off or if they built in that delay to help prevent stutter. Either way, should still load most apps pretty quick.

Scrolling in Stock browser, especially in MW. Swiping homescreens, stock widgets taking few seconds to load. My note 3 has a lot of same issues. I just have very little patience to deal with it at this point. While this is better than anything out there, it is still unrefined.

I understand first adopters are beta testers of sorts, but this is a device that has been rumored for 2 years.
I do get lag at points but we kinda know this when we buy a tw device i dont think ive ever owned a non laggy tw device, however its not excessive and yes Chrome has become atrocious on most devices however this is the first release of the software and it normal gets better as its optimised
I highly recommend the Chrome Beta browser currently in the play store. Ive had nothing but smooth sailing browsing with it. Rendering is on par if not better than on the ipad....the stock chrome browser and samsung browser cant hold a candlestick to it...just tweak the settings prior to using and you will be browser heaven. I prefer chrome because of sync features with my computer and phone...its a no frills browser...but I think they did a wonderful job with the current beta version.

Chrome is indeed horrible on the 12.2. Jumpy and laggy. I've been using Dolphin, but the stock browser seems to be the smoothest. Still not an ipad, but quite decent.

Chrome is absolutely fine on my Note 2 running Android HD ROM.
Maybe it's something to do with gpu rendering or ram management.
Looks like it's up to this fine community of modders to do Samsung's job for them. Again. For a change.

Chrome beta browser on my Note Pro has been whooping my ipad air safari browser IOS 7.1 Beta 5...I can only assume that mileage will vary by usage. I've always been a fan of Safari especially since the tab refreshes and crashes are somewhat nonexistent, however if I'm picking up a tablet strictly to browse, my Note Pro is my go to device now?
Of course I have Google Now Launcher installed and running, so maybe this is directly affecting my browsing in a positive way.

I havent heard of anyone seeing it on the 8.4 I think its minimal. If you switch launchers pretty much nonexistent

I agree with you 1000% I customized my own ROM and removed all the unnecessary bloat bogging this monster down.
Now I don't experience any lag whatsoever, especially after getting rid of "Touchwiz" and installing Nova Prime! Now thats money well spent. I also edited the build.prop file and changed my DPI settings from 320 to a nice 270.Now let's talk about having some real, real estate on this tablet. I can now get several widgets on just one home screen page and this sucker looks sweet and it screams performance without any slowdown, lag, whatsoever! This is what the manufacturer should have done in the begining.

You should release a rom so we can all flash it
Developing few themes I've found out what is one possible cause of the heavy lag (and with that I mean the phone gets unusable. Seconds without reactions) I can get since when I upgraded to Lollipop. In a simple word: themes.
That's 100% certified, I tested and retested it again. In more specific details at least in my case i discovered that if the Navigation bar button for exchanging keyboard isn't properly sized - and it will hardly be since the Sony Theme Creator is messy with those particular icons - the skinner may go banana.
There are other bugs as well (try to install the same theme over the current theme), but the one above is probably the most nasty. The obvious workaround is to apply a different theme (the plain, boring stock ones don't define any asset) and maybe reboot, but if you want to see a bit more in detail if something is wrong with your current theme do the following (requires root):
- Download the Theme Debugger
- Check the size of the keyboard button in the bottom right like in those picture (left is ok, right - which is a stock theme - is an example of things going wrong) :

- Open Theme Debugger
- Click on the top left menu (3 dots) and choose "Restart System UI"
Now check the size of the keyboard button again. If it changes in size, like if it is too small or too big or if the landscape and portrait version do not match (they get stretched in one direction or the other) you most likely have the issue. Inform the theme developer (with a couple of screenshots) and on the meantime use a different theme. Oh, don't blame the developer, it's the skinner to be effed up.

or... You can discover that you have a crappy app called ROM ToolBox Pro which hasn't been updated in a year and with Lollipop it went banana and set the at boot the minfree values to a ridiculously low value. The ugly thing is that there is a sort of "bug" with the minfree in Lollipop (at least with the SnapDragon 400, the Moto G has the same issue), the file
Code:
/sys/module/lowmemorykiller/parameters/minfree
is write only (permissions "--w--w----" instead of -rw-r---r--") so the app above couldn't read the minfree values but it did write them (discovered enabling the full log in SuperSU).
Still the thing about the themes partially applies. With low minfree values the skinner did crash in the situation mentioned. Also if one updates the active theme (as in installs a new version over it) after the reboot the theme has gone (but it shows as if it was selected). Hopefully we'll get an update fixing all these little annoying issues (plus the GPS and camera fixes, sure).

Sure, you can play with the minfree as much as you like. They are volatile files, they get recreated after each reboot (so if it gets stuck just restart the phone). Which also means that if you want to make any modification permanent you should add it in a /etc/init.d script.
Apparently I fixed once for all the lag that has been infesting my phone for months. Other than the couple of things I already mentioned (and yes, the wrong minfree was simply a nightmare), what made it more constantly fluid now has been the following: In settings do:
Settings > Apps > All > Google Play Store, Clear data and Clear cache
Settings > Apps > All > Google Play Services > Manage space, Clear all data and Clear cache
I used that as a suggestion for installing FaceBook returning error 504 (but I've found out that what really fixed the FB installation was to uninstall FB Messenger. What a piece of junk) and no, it isn't placebo effect, I waited few days to be sure. Also apparently the 787 Mhz went from a 50-50 with the 1190Mhz to a 70-30.
Oh well, I just thought could be useful to share!

It depends on what you define as lag at this point. If you followed this thread you see that it took me months to get a rid of the lag on my phone. Yet if after repairing the phone with PC Companion it's still lagging, either your phone is damaged or you're too much lag sensitive.

I am quite sure the ROM has nothing to do with it. Still I'm using the Custom IT version, which is the one of my phone.
But if after a repair with PC Companion, no apps, no data your phone really lags most likely you have an HW issue. Try to see if taking out the SIM and SD cards it still lags. If the phone really lags changing the brightness it may be damaged.
Then if your lag is just some nearly imperceptible micro stuttering.. deal with it. That can be normal.
I just tried to be on the phone while brightness is on 100%, and I must say it is lagging for me too.
It is not some brutal lag or idk, but it is noticeable.

The problem is that the video on my laptop lags by itself, it fries the CPU. I tried to watch it on PS3 and on my television and the codecs aren't recognized. You need a better screen recorder.
Still even with the lag induced by the player it didn't seem that bad, the apps were opening quite fast. Then it's an Xperia M2, we can't expect the performances of an Xperia Z5 (and let's forget an iPhone 6S ). Also you had to show the difference with brightness at zero to compare.
In any case, when I wrote heavy lag I meant that with the wrong minfree values I was waiting even a minute to open certain apps. That was absurd indeed. Fixed that I still had some lag, like when unlocking the screen. The sequence was jumping. Or the keyboard could take ages to load (it still does it sometimes, but not that bad). Clearing the Google Play Service data fixed that as well. But the micro stuttering when scrolling has been there since ever, KitKat included. No matter the brightness, at least on my phone. I just triple checked it now, maybe it's an optical effect. Being higher the brightness the lags gets more more evident, I don't know
Yeah, I am checking it again with brightness zero. Scrolling the home drawer's panels it micro stutters. I'm so used to it that I don't even consider it lag. Well, at least that's me.

Actually I have the same question. I've checked a bit around few days ago and in Google Play they are all getting not excellent reviews. At least the ones I've seen. Which is annoying becauseI've read the Z3 (and above, I suppose) has one made by Sony, integrated in the ROM (it was for KitKat, not sure if it went to Lollipop as well). So if you ever find a good one. please let me know.

I installed the highest rated app "Telecine" and I must say I have never recorded a smoother video of my phone.
It was smoother than the actuall use xD
But it kinda lacks some features, like saving location etc.

EDIT: After testing a few apps, I am thinking between AZ Screen Recorder (which I used before, and after enabling 60fps in settings recording is smooth as in Telecine) and Telecine.
AZ Screen Recorder is packed with all features, but I need to do some more testing. Here: https://youtu.be/64xyaASGO9M - This is a recording with default resolution and 60fps. It is smooth, really smooth.

So I checked the two video players. Telecine is quite limited and then it started crashing. I removed it immediately. AZ Recorder seems good. I liked the option to change the audio track. Too bad that it doesn't work. Unless it doesn't like my AAC format. But it did play it on the preview (just the audio).
Anyway, the most important thing is that I can play the recorded videos from my laptop without it frying. So I can do any editing from it. As I always do anyway, I hate to operate from the phone!!

Yeah the AZ Recorder is doing really nice, but something about that audio isnt right, when I was uploading on YouTube it said that the audio codec is not recognized idk.

I was wondering the same thing, didn't see a way to do it. Long pressing the circle button activates the task switcher which is cool. However, I'm having a lot of problems with Archos Video and other apps, so I'm switching back...

Actually there's so little to review so far...
The beta installed over the air after opting in on the Android Beta program page. After that the update came to my Nexus right away, no need to flash anything, it does everything on its own in a very Apple-esque way.
With every boot there's a pop-up reminding you this is Android N beta deveolper thing and blablabla.
Nothing new on the interface whatsoever, and it's totally normal since the Leanback Launcher is the same that Marshmallow has. The settings menu doesn't show in full screen as in Android TV but occupies half the screen and the navigation is more ore less like in a phone, you have to scroll down instead of sideways. Nothing new on the settings app that I'm aware of.
Regarding what's new, I've only seen that an app-switching option shows up if the circle button is long pressed, and you can switch between recently opened applications just as it would be on any Android by pressing the square on the bottom right.
The apps I've used (Archos Video and YouTube) show a pop-up citing errors about libraries and dependencies not present for some reason, but so far that hasn't affected the usage of the app themselves. However there's an odd thing: The video plays "smoother" that it should, as if some kind of pixel interpolation was present. The very same apps with the very same video files, boot the looks are as if you were watching a soap opera. I think this is related to the Nexus Player itself, or it's decoding hardware. I think I've read something about that here, citing frame interpolation of some sort.
Any ways, not much to review yet. The update it's crude, not even half baked and so far there's no reason for anyone to use it because it contains nothing worth of leaving the stable MM. I have yet to see the Picture in Picture mode, but have no clue on how to enable it.

It was nice being able to use long press in Marshmallow for HDMI-CEC functions (like turning my TV on and switching the TV input to the player).
I notice the Android TV remote app doesn't work yet with "N".
Well, i did the noobiest thing. so I flashed the image on my np because i wanted to try it with twrp recovery, because i wanted to try it, but it all worked fine, but i forgot to flash the supersu file as well, so i lost root, and it flashed the stock N recovery, even though i KNOW that i didnt flash that in recovery. Is there anyway that i can fix this w/o PC? e.g. a oneclickroot, or something? cause im only 14 and my brother puts viruses on the PC but they think that i do it since hes young and they say that he doesnt know how but he does.......... my email is [email protected]

I also did notice that the remote app is not working. N is pretty rough and I will be switching back today, maybe I'll try one of the custom 6.1 roms instead of rolling to stock MM
The frame interpolation/soap opera effect was present in marshmallow also. The setting to change it is "developer options : general : hdmi optimization" set to "best resolution" for normal, "best framerate" for interpolation.

Problem is that the option isn't available in N's dev options.

Getting the "libraries and dependencies" warning in a couple apps as well, but like you noted has not affected performance.

let your bootloader unlocked!! Otherwise it's going to a pain in the head to recover in case something goes nuts!

How stable is Dev Preview 2? Anyone having any issues with it? The main thing I am wondering is if you are able to re-arrange apps on the home screen. That is the one thing I didn't like about stock marshmallow and is what has me on a custom rom. The only issue, the ROM isn't all that stable but I don't want to run stock for this one reason.

you can rearrange apps on stock 6.0.1. Tried N last night but seems buggy...Netflix had issues...going back.
Has anybody an Idea how to change the filesystem? it's squashfs by default. Thats why we cant root...
