[Q] Motorola MC40 Root/Custom Boot Ani - General Questions and Answers

Greetings,
I've been using these forums silently for quite some time, but now need help with two devices not covered here.
I have a client who has two devices he'll be putting into service that require a custom branded boot animation. I cannot find any documentation on rooting nor patching these devices with the custom animations, and am hoping the fine gurus of this board can help.
The devices are the Motorola MC40 – “Hybrid” Gingerbread (2.3) and the DAP M4305 (2.3)
Does anybody have any experience rooting / patching a boot animation to these devices?

i dont know about that other DAP M4305 but for the hybrid you should be able to use gingerbreak with this since its gingerbread, might work with the other device since its gingerbread also, i have never heard of it. heres a link-
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044765 its by chainfire so its safe
dont click on the "GingerBreak_exploit_source_from_APKv1.1.zip" get the apk on the next post
as for your boot animation im not sure what you want. theres a app that i know of on the play store that can change the boot animation if your rooted.
cheers, good luck! (if they possibly work replie back and i should be able to start a thread for other People)
Edit: oh one more methood i forgot about http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
i would use the gingerbreak methood first thought

Thanks for the tips, Trozzul.
I'll give those two methods a shot - should get the devices by end of week.
Regarding the boot ani, I'd like to not rely on a Play app, since these devices will be given to employees who shouldn't have access to this feature once deployed.
We previously used Anbech's method on a batch of S3s, and were hoping to find a similar approach. We're not android devs, but we can follow directions - so don't know if this approach would work across different models / manufacturers.
Again, thanks for the heads up. I'll report back once I've given GingerBreak a shot - but hopefully there will be more suggestions in the interim.

I currently managed to root my Motorola MC40 with kitkat installed. I used Kingo Root, and did it from the computer. I have also installed busybox.apk and other APKs using the adb command prompt from my pc.

And how were you able to connect it to your PC?
I bought mine from a friend that used to work at Walmart. I was able to factory reset it but the Walmart information and everything is still on it. When I try to connect it to my laptop it won't even show up. I went to the Motorola website and downloaded the drivers for it but sill no luck.
I'm guessing if I can get it connected to my laptop I might be able to root it using the same method you did, and be able to put TWRP on it so I could boot it up in recovery mode and completely wipe the whole partition.
Any suggestions?

Removing Walmart Apps from MC40
I bought an MC40 from Ebay - I used a download of the MC40 Jellybean restore zip and used ADB Sideload to update the firmware - after that I have stock AOSP firmware. - PM me if you need the zip.
I want to be able to use Speech to Text but for that I have to get Google Mobile Services / App Store installed - it is grayed out in the settings.
I do not have a custom boot loader but I just downloaded the zip from opengapps.org - I attempted adb sideload zip after rebooting the device in recovery mode -
That did not work.
Does any one know if a custom boot loader that could sideload the OpenGapps Package to this device?
Thanks!

can i get the .zip file please?

I need a copy of the firmware for mc40 if anyone has one please

I am in the same boat.
Needing the recovery image as Zebra is not allowing downloads of them without an active support contract, which I even had quoted and cheapest I could get was $225. This is a $40 device... stupid.
If anyone could share the file it would be greatly appreciated.

[Q] Help rooting non-production Tablet

I have a beta version Intel tablet codenamed MFLD-DV10. It is running android 4.0.3 and has very nice specs. Unfortunately due to it being a beta device there is no support on how to root/get a upgraded version of android on it. This is a fun project tablet that id like to work on to get it running super smooth. If anyone has any Knowledge on how to manually root android that would be incredibly helpful.

[Q] Guide to rooting/flashing roms

I didn't see any guides for rooting/flashing roms for the motorola photon q. Is it easy? I am used to using odin for my Epic 4G. I want to be sure before I use my upgrade with Sprint, thanks.
So instead of Odin, you use RSD Lite and 'FXZ' files.
[05-08-2013] Photon Q FXZ
As for how to root, [CWM] 6.0.1.0 and how to root covers that nicely.
However, that version of CWM is a bit old, and won't flash KitKat ROM's - so go thru the unlock bootloader process and flash OpenRecovery or TWRP:
[recovery] TWRP 2.6.3.1
[25-11-2013] Photon Q Open Recovery 2.09

Thanks, but I'm still a bit confused. What are RSD Lite and 'FXZ' files? I clicked the first link that you posted,
"[05-08-2013] Photon Q FXZ" and clicked the "Download" hyperlink and downloaded Android 4.1.2
Blur_Version.98.10.5.XT897.Sprint.en.US. What is this? For rooting or unbricking? I tried the other links too, but I
didn't understand what they were about and got lost. Would you please explain it in more detail? Any idea when
CM11 Stable is going to be released?
Thanks.

You use Odin on a Samsung phone with a TAR file to return it to stock / unbrick.
You use RSD on a Motorola phone with a FXZ file to do the same.
CM usually releases their stable version when the next big Android version is released or is coming near. Thus, CM11 Stable is expected to be out in May~July (when the 4.4 cycle ends and Google announces next Android version + next Nexus devices).

I said "instead of Odin"... I thought that would clue you in.
RSD Lite is like Odin. The FXZ files are complete stock backups - recovery, system, boot, everything completely stock. So yea, it's your way out if you do manage to do something wrong, or if you simply want to go back to a completely stock setup (again, including recovery).
CM11 is already pretty 'stable' although it's still in the "nightly" phase. I don't work for CM, nor do I dictate when they do their releases.
thanks for this

Thank you for those details. I haven't heard anything of Sprint releasing any more androids with qwerty keyboards. Maybe I should order one soon. I want Cyanogen Mod on it though. Are there any other Cyanogen Mod stable versions out now for the Photon Q? I've tried the 10.2 links but get an error. I've never had to unlock a bootloader before. Some of the possible results seem concerning. I don't want to ruin the phone.

Thanks for the update on RSD Lite. I didn't see RSD Lite in your links though. Maybe I missed it. Would you mind shooting me the link? I found RSDLite5.6.rar here on XDA. Is RDSLite5.6.rar the best to use to flash a Cyanogenmod ROM?
AndyYan updated me on the availability of Cyanogenmod, I didn't know that the next Stable version of CM is usually released unitl after the the next android operating system is released. Will the Photon Q be able to get more CM updates after CM11? I heard that the Samsung Epic 4G won't be able to.
What is the unlock bootloader process? I tried some of the links but got an access denied page. Then I got something where I would have to agree to legal terms. https://motorola-global-portal.cust...e/bootloader/unlock-your-device-a/action/auth Is this really necessary?

You still didn't get it... RSD is for getting back to stock. To flash a custom ROM you would have to load a custom recovery via fastboot. And to actually use fastboot you need an unlocked bootloader. If you don't see a "WARNING - BOOTLOADER UNLOCKED" message when you power on your phone, yours is NOT unlocked and it's necessary to unlock it before you proceed.
As for continued CM support, one particular good thing about Photon Q is that it uses a Qualcomm MSM8960 CPU which is strongly supported by Qualcomm (and maybe Google - most current Nexus devices use them). Basically, this means we can get newer CM builds faster than those with obsolete CPUs, like Epic 4G's Samsung S5PC110 (I once had an Epic 4G too!).

I downloaded the zip file "adb_fastboot_and_other_tools", then I ran "adb-setup-1.2". It is the 15 seconds ADB installer version 1.2.. At the prompt that says "Do you want to install ADB and Fastboot? [Y/N]" I selected Y. Then it prompted me "Do you want to install device drivers? [Y/N]" I selcted Y. It took me to the device installation wizard. I clicked next and "The drivers were successfully installed on this computer." Google, Inc. Is there anything else I need to do to install fastboot or was this just the drivers for it?

I think instead of universal drivers like that, maybe you should go seek drivers specific drivers for Motorola phones or just for our model. I remembered installing a Motorola-specific driver before I could even do fastboot.
Of course I could be wrong - waiting on someone to proof or disproof that.

Another former Epic 4G dude? Yeah :highfive:
Photon Q can initially be hard to deal with, but things will become very easy after you unlocked your bootloader. My Photon Q was bought unlocked so I don't know how to unlock it myself - just search it out - but after unlocking, just go to fastboot mode, flash in a custom recovery and you're ready to go for any custom ROMs you want. We have CM11, Carbon, many nice ROMs to try out. Personally, I always go for CM for the familiar layout/feeling.

Photon Q also have a download mode, where you can use RSDLite to flash FXZ files, similar to how you use Odin to flash TAR files for Epic 4G.

[Q] How to edit a stock ROM and pass verification

Feel free to answer as much or as little of this post as possible. My desire is to learn. First, let me phrase my question in general terms:
1. Is it possible to download a stock android firmware rom, extract the rom, and change it, and repackage it in a way that is still accepted by the device as an original factory ROM? In other words, is it possible to take a factory rom (such as an update.zip or in my case 1.0.7.zip) and change it and reinstall it in the stock android system recovery (3e)?
Now that I have asked the general question, I will explain to you why I want to do this (if possible)
I have a tablet that recently stopped booting. I have never rooted it or used a custom rom before. However, the device still powers on and I can access the stock android recovery system. I can even use ADB (though I know very little about it's capabilities). I will explain my logic below. Please feel free to show me if I am wrong on the following points.
1. It is impossible to install a custom rom without FIRST installing a custom recovery.
2. It is impossible to install a custom recovery without FIRST rooting the device.
3. It is impossible to root a device that won't boot if you do not have USB Debugging enabled (via Android Developer Options).
The manufacturer of my device (RCA RCT6378W2) has not released the source code or original factory firmware for this device. I have attempted to install various roms that seem to be compatible via ADB SIDELOAD, but they have always been rejected immediately after the device says:
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
Installation aborted.
However, I have managed to located 3 firmware updates from RCA. These updates are called 1.0.2.zip , 1.0.3.zip, and 1.0.7.zip. These updates are all accepted by the android system recovery. When I ADB Sideload these updates, the tablet says this:
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
Removing unneeded files...
Unpacking new files...
Install from ADB complete.
Although these firmware updates are installed properly, my tablet still does not boot. Upon closer examination of these updates, they are not full android OS firmwares, but mere updates to the existing system. So, this got me to thinking... These updates are the only firmwares that can manage to pass update verification. Is it possible to alter these updates in a way that will still pass this verification process? If this is possible, then I might be able to reflash the rest of the android operating system by altering these updates to include the full OS. Does anyone know if this is possible? What would be the difficulty level of doing so? I have managed to locate nearly all of the files from another user who has the same device in working condition. For example, I have the following from a working device:
Backup.img
boot.img
cache.img
kernel.img
kpanic.img
misc.img
parameter.img
parameter.txt
recovery.img
system.img
Would it be possible to take the files from these images and add them to the firmware updates and repackage it in a way that passes system verification? And my last question is: Is there any other way I can get this device to a working version of android (stock, custom, I don't care!). Thanks!
There is unfortunately no way currently to modify a manufacturer signed zip and still have it signed unless you have friends within the company who can get you that signature. If you want to root your phone first you need to unlock the bootloader then use fastboot while in bootloader/odin/download mode and flash a recovery then you can use a custom rom.

Thanks for the info. If there is no way to alter a manufacturer rom in a way that is accepted by the system, then I might be out of luck. I don't know much about bootloaders. I feel like I heard someone say that this device did not have one. I've also heard that this device doesn't support fastboot and that Nexus is one of the few that does (that might have been an old statement... not sure). Anyways, it might be time for me to give up on this device. Thanks for the clarification.

Thanks for the help. It is a RCA RCT6378W2. It is 7" and 8GB. Lots of info on the following link:
http://specdevice.com/showspec.php?id=0893-5af7-0033-c58700000000
How about this question- On a non-rooted device with standard android recovery system, is there any way to install another rom... perhaps one from a very similar device?

no, as it has to be signed by the manufacturer to be accepted by the recovery, and I don't see any roms or even recoveries for your device...

Just got this same Tab for my son & have been looking around for the best ways to root. It's actually a nice little tablet. For $65 I'm quite impressed.
Couple questions for you if I may.
-Does this download have any prerequisite downloads, surveys or ads before it's installed on my PC? You know, junk & not just the program.
-Which super user app is installed?
Kingo root comes with all the files you need with no surveys or bloatware. It installs its own super user program but I deleted it wit ha system app remover and installed super su from the play store. If you can, after you root your tablet can you pull the stock lenovo launcherHD and upload it to here. I deleted mine and you need it to change the lock screen wallpaper.
hI guys!
Good to see topic about our tab 2. Small question - any1 of you got lolipop update already? Week ago Lenovo said it's ready... I have so annoying touch bug and hope update gonna fix this.
The update is not out yet but lenovo said late summer so I would think it would come out sometime in august. Once it comes out can someone try kingo root on it, I'm not updating if I can't get root.

Lolipop is out, but not in every region yet. Sadly, not in mine too (Poland).

Well I tired to get a recovery on the tablet but failed. Mtk tool and sb flash didn't work since the tablet is write protected and also I don't think is works for media tek 8 series chips like it does with 6 series chips. I was going to build twrp but you need a unlocked bootloader to flash it and when I run fastboot OEM unlock it returns three dots. I think my fastboot drivers got messed up after I unhard bricked my OnePlus and that's causing it to return 3 dots. I will try another pc and report back.
Nope it still returned the three dots. Well I'm out of ideas to unlock the boot loader. Maybe a more experienced dev can do it or we can ask lenovo nicely.
Bootloader
According to a thread on the lenovo community... the device has a mediatek proceesor, which can be flashed without unlocking anything using their SP flash tool. Only downside is any custom roms would have to be built for mediatek and using a "scatter" file.
Thread: forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-Android-based-Tablets/how-to-unlock-the-Lenovo-A3000-bootloader/m-p/1588718/
Stock Rom: androidxda.com/download-lenovo-stock-rom-models
Flash Instructions: androidxda.com/flash-stock-rom-using-smart-phone-flash-tool
The rom's source is also available on the Lenovo support site.
Unfortunately, I'm not expert at anything to make anything happen with this information.
---------- Post added at 08:48 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:41 PM ----------
Then again, all that may have nothing to do with the A3300, since it's all based on the A3000... but same processor type? doesn't seem like mediatek has any info on their site about it either.

It was like pulling teeth, but I FINALLY got TWRP running on this tablet. It was EXTRA painful for me because the tool I use asks you to select your device resolution and like a dummy, I actually picked 1024x600 (which is the device's resolution in landscape, but not portrait mode.) When the thing finished installing TWRP and booted up, I was locked out of the tablet because the touch elements for twrp to actually restart or even unlock the device ran off the screen making using them impossible. I had to wait seven hours for the battery to finally die before I could access the thing again, (thanks for skipping the reset button on the a7-30F, Lenovo!)
In a nutshell though, I started with Kingo Root, which was successful, and then used Easy Magic TWRP Installer made specifically for mediatek devices, found on another xda thread. JUST MAKE SURE that when it says "Unable to detect your device resolution" that you choose the highest res below 600x1024 (it was like 546x964 or something like that. I can't remember exactly.) After I had a working TWRP, I switched to chainfire's SuperSU
I hope this helps.

Let me know how it works...
The biggest challenge with installing a ROM methinks though, is that you have to use the SP Flash tool to actually upload a rom. I could be wrong... I haven't tried through TWRP. It took me so long just to fix my screw up that I put it down for a while. The SP Flash Tool needs some kind of Android Scatter file, (probably a Lenovo specific MT8127_Android_Scatter.txt), which I have been unable to find or figure out from the source. I'm just not that talented.
It IS entirely possible that just applying a rom via TWRP will work fine, but it's also likely that the system will bark at you. I'm curious to see what happens.:good:
Usually you can get the scatter file for mediatek device with mkt tools but the option is blocked out when I plug the tablet in. I downloaded the cm source but I ran into my first hiccup when I use cat /proc/mtd to extract the boot.img it won't show any of the partitions.

Yeah, I think the mtk tools app is unable to access the root shell on the device for some reason, keeping it from being able to grab the scatter. I'm not sure why it's not working though. I got SuperSU installed and running on the tab, but that application still fails to get to the root shell.
I can't find any time to work on porting cm to the A7-30; Can anyone else give it a shot.?

It was dumped into the 'last_log_r' file from my last update. Then today I downloaded the lollipop OTA and pulled the scatter file from that (this is what I attached here).

Install Google Play Services on Chinese Phone (Gree G0215D)

Hi there,
I received a Gree G2015D Phone as a gift from a Chinese friend. (Here is a Russian Site showing the phone)
It comes with a 6.0.1 based Rom but without google play services installed.
There are a lot of guides how this can be done for Xiaomi and other more popular Chinese brands, but outside of China Gree seems to be mostly unknown.
Reading through various guides for other phones I tried several of the procedures described there.
They all more or less involve either using a installer app that downloads the needed components (e.g. this one: http://xiaomininja.com/download/google-app-installer-file-download/) or manually downloading the needed components (e.g. from APKmirror.com).
I always ended up with varying versions of the following components:
Google Account Manager
Google Services Framework
Google Play Services
Google Calendar Sync
Google Contacts Sync
Google Play Store
With the newest versions from APKMirror the Play Store just closed immediately and through the settings the "Add Account" Button was unresponsive. I couldn't get to a point where I would enter my google account.
With an older Version of Account Manager (4.0.x) I at one point managed to register a google account. After that the Play store would open but it would remain blank. Nothing would load.
I went through all the permissions menus and made sure that the google apps had all permissions I could give them.
Also restarting after every app install and deleting app data didn't help to solve the issue.
Unfortunately I couldn't find a custom recovery for the phone (neither CWM nor TWRP) which would let me flash openGAPPS or the like.
Also I didn't find a way to root the phone so that I could manually push the files to the system partitions.
Does anybody have an Idea what I could try? I will try ANYTHING I would really like to use the phone but without google play its just not feasible for me.
Looking forward to any hints!
Thanks in advance!
I have the exact same phone...and the same problem. I'm thinking if its possible to flash this thing to a vanilla android, however I fear I'd have to cook the rom myself....and somehow unlock the bootloader first. If anybody could lend me some assistance on this, it would be great. The phone really isn't bad...and it would be a shame to have it lying around as a paperweight on account of it being completely chinese

Glad to no longer be alone with this problem
I think unlocking the bootloader can be done in the developer settings of the rom. I don't have the phone with me currently so I can't tell you where exactly I've seen this option.
However I don't think we would necessarily need a vanilla rom to get google services on the device.
Maybe achieving root to push the apps to the system directory would already be enough?
Or a custom recovery to be able to flash gapps.?
Hi guys,
I also have this phone model, did you finally achieve to install the Google Play Store?
Thank you in advance.
Hey there...
Also have a GREE G0215D.
Has someone out there an idea to unlock the bootloader?
My chinese is no sooooo damn good, for this...
Only go to 2 Setup Screens by pressin Home + VolDown + Power or VolUp...
greetz
This phone ha damn good specs!
Have you enabled developer settings?
If yes, you'll find an option there to allow your bootloader to be unlocked.
Kingoroot can unlock all Qualcomm devices based on snapdragon chipset. It comes in two forms, an android app and a windows tool. Try your luck with this.
Reply with your result.
KingoRoot didn't work...
But in developer Option U can unlock bootloader, but push "enable" also didn't work.
Hope somebody can solve this...
New Update, German language and an open bootloader...
Lookin' forward for what's happen next...

The link include many things, like save brick, the lately rom and so on.
Hey before U write this, I killed the recovery.
Now I installed twrp 3.0.2.0 and this works.
But first I tried cm13 (the only DL that loaded 100%) and it doesn't work.
Restart into recovery...
Now I try to load original MIUI but baido killed all DLs this time.
Hope I'll get one for another try.
Or can You load to another filesharing system works better then the chinese one,
thx René

SOLVED
Finally!
It took me a while to go through all the chinese forums, but I finally found a solution to root and install Gapps.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TUTORIAL:
First of all you need to download a package, but I need to make 10 posts to attach it: by the way you go on Mediafire and you can find it here: file/ocigw5icha135gf/Root_G0215D_Gree_Phone_2.zip
Then go through the following procedure
1) Remove screen lock from settings
2) Enable developer options
3) Go to developer options and unlock bootloader
4) Shut down the phone
5) Boot into fastboot (volume down + home + power)
6) Run 挂载TWRP Recovery.cmd it will boot into TWRP
7) Press on TWRP's install package (top left) with gapps (ARM64 for Android 6.0) and root (G0215D-ROOT-SuperSU-v2.76-20160630161323.zip)
PS: I recommend flashing CM over the stock ROM: Gree Phone 2 has a great hardware, CM unleash its potentials.
