[Q] buying used stock VZW S3 - how to tell if it has the update - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I will be buying a friend's totally stock VZW S3. I've heard some horrible things about the most recent OTA update and I would like to make sure this phone doesn't haven't it. How can I tell? If it does have it, what do I need to do revert back?
I've been a Moto user primarily, and this will be my first Samsung.

System Settings>About phone
If he has the update you can just Odin back to the previous OTA.

LOL, yeah, I know how to get to that screen.
What I need to know is what System Version, Android Version, Baseband Version, Kernel Version, or Build Number the OTA update and pre-OTA updates are.

It should look like what I posted.
The "bad" OTA update would look like this:

OK, got it. "MB1" vs "MD3" in the Baseband Version.
Thanks.

 that's correct, keep in mind it's no big deal at all to revert back if it was updated to the dreaded md3

Where Can I get The VRLG1 Update At?

I recently got an S3 and it came with the VRLG1 update already installed. I rooted my phone and then decided to go back to stock and flashed the VRLF2 stock image because it was the only one I could find. My question is does anyone have or know where to get the VRLG1 update from instead of waiting for the OTA.
You want the dumbed down search?

Reflash Stock 4.1.2

Is there a way to reflash stock 4.1.2? I have had problems ever since the 4.1.2 OTA came. I got the latest OTA, and things have gotten worse. I Would like to restart with 4.1.2, root and then get the latest OTA. I realize the latest OTA is only a few days old, but is that possible? I have already tried a Factory Reset, and that has not helped. I want to wipe everything and reflash.

Thanks. I found that utility on xda, but am looking for guidance on whether it can be used on the latest OTA.

I'm sure if you give it a couple weeks once more people have gotten the new update the utility will get updated. Or you could always test it out yourself
Just keep an eye on the thread for the utility. That's what I would do anyways.

[Q] Installed update....no root!

I went back to stock. Hit the wrong button and installed the update. Now I am not rooted and hate everything!!! Any idea how long before I can root this poor phone so I don't hate everything about it and on it?:crying:
There's a good chance there won't be another exploit found. This Is thy you have to protect root.

There is talk of a method to partially flash back to previous build using rsd, root, then update again over on droidrzr.com I will try to find it and link it for you.

Rsd lite is a Motorola program used to flash xml files.
I was wrong, it wasn't droidrzr.com, it was right here on xda.

He doesn't give specific instructions but others say he is reputable so if he says it worked, they believe him.

realbbb is a very sharp guy and former Bionic owner who went through all of the "Cheescake" leaked update issues we had with that device while Motorola was struggling with the baseband firmware in the early rollout of VZW's LTE network.
This workaround is a version of the method we used when you got stuck on a non upgradeable test leak and had to revert to a prior version to move forward.
It is exactly the sort of creative thinking that is required in situations like this when you find yourself stuck by unforeseen circumstances.
This can easily and safely be tested by anyone who is currently on the update and has lost root, since the full XML.zip was released shortly after the update went live last week.

New OTA update? Just got a notice to install.

My wife's n8013 just got a notice to apply an OTA the tablet just downloaded... It's around 192mb, so my guess is it's just apps.
The machine is rooted, stock.. Anyone know if this breaks anything?

OTA may fail or corrupt OS if rooted use Kies and reroot .

Anyone do the update? My Note 10.1 wifi got an OTA notification as well. Currently on stock 4.1.2. Anyone know consists of this update? My choices are, Later/Install All/Install....curious...but not enough to hit the trigger.
This is interesting. Anyone knows what Samsung packed into that update? If you've already rooted, i think it's much safer to wait until the update is added to your favorite custom ROM.
That's kinda the issue, she likes the stock ROM. Maybe I'll pull the update file and look into what's in there tomorrow.

Unfortunately my son thought he was being "helpful" and accepted it.
Minor UI stuff, stuff runs a little smoother, but I haven't seen anything major.
HOWEVER it de-roots you, and none of the usual suspects have worked. I originally rooted using Framaroot, and it does not work. So waiting with baited breath for someone to get around to fixing that problem.
I just checked my daughter tab 2 7.0 and its installing 4.2.2 right now.. and apparently thats been out for about a month. I was unaware... kinda stinks that an older tablet has a newer os version

[Q] Most recent stock ODIN that doesn't kill unlocked bootloader?

Hey guys,
My cousins are both on S3's that originally had 4.0 or 4.1 I guess it was. Anyhow, they're running custom recoveries, so they don't have to worry about locked bootloaders or anything.
When their contracts end in September, they'll be upgrading their phones (probably to the new F5/prime S5). And I'll help them list the old phones.
I'll need them to go back to stock of course. But I don't want to flash a stock that removes custom-recovery capabilities. What is the most recent firmware version that would be okay to go back to? I have an account at sammobile so I can download firmwares.
Thanks!
VRBMF1 4.1.2. However, you will need to root and remove the system app "sdm 1.0" to prevent both phones from updating to 4.3 with permanently locked bootloaders. The phones need to be rooted before you sell them if you want a little more value.
