hello,
i am trying to understand how backup & restore works in android.
as far as my understanding goes, nv items are "non-volatile" items that are critical to android system (like preferred roaming list, enhanced roaming indicator, imei, etc.). i found a huge list of nv items here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=33230579
so my questions are:
0. how does backup & restore work? if a backup is made, what type of file would it create?... it seems that every time i try to find how backup & restore in android work, i only come across how to do it instead of how it works.
1. do these nv items gets backup & restore like other backup&restore-able items?
2. where are these nv items located? i've seen posts about nv item reader and such, but is there a certain directory where they could be found?
are nv items located in /system? i understand that /system is normally read-only..
3. i was told that MRU (most recently used) and LRU (least recently used) are also part of nv items.. how are these nv items?
i apologize if my questions are... bit off..
any help or lead would be greatly appreciated!
thank you very much in advance!
bump!
please give me a lead!

Hi,
I've been looking through the forum regarding STG file recovery. I managed to wreck my XDAIIi but have an older XDAII. ActiveSynch won't allow a restore from a recent backup which is well documented (Rom versions/regional settings etc).
I assume restoring to an XDAII from a IIi is a no go.
Therefore I found STGViewer which allows me to see my backed-up files and copy/paste some of them at least (thank God yoda.mp3 is safe!). However the ones I really need are - surprise, surprise - the contacts. STGViewer lists these under a hive called 'Pegasus Databases'.. but how on earth do I get the data from these? Not even bothered if I can't get them on to the XDAII, just want to be able to see the text within!
Any help most appreciated. Thanks!
Hello!
I´m using the energy Rom.
So I update it every one or two weeks.
Problem is, that after every update, all my adjustments are gone.
Of course there are some backup programs on the rom, but they are not working the way I want to.
I´m looking for a backup program which have the same capabilitys like:
- PIM Backup
- CHT-Editor backup
- Settings export
But the program also should backup
- Home screen taps adjustments
- reinstall programs
And it also should rearrange all the icons in programs, settings, and so on, like i did it.
I already looked for sashimi, but the wimo-experts page is down.
If someone knows a good backup program, please let me know.
Thank you very much in advance!

Daniel
Download Kheb 1.1 and learn how to backup user settings. There isn't going to be any magic program that selectively backs up everything you want/need and leaves behind junk and potentially harmful material. Learn how to search and backup registry keys and settings files. It's really not that hard to do. Then use sashimi or a similar app to restore your settings. Or just put all the reg keys in one file and import it manually.
Hi there,
Short story, 2 q's:
1) Anyone know where BMA stores it's serial (or whatever you want to call the code it uses to generate it's time based passwords)
2) Anyone know where stock samsung firmware (SGS / Gingerbread) stores the SMS database?
============= Longer story =================
I've upgraded my SGS (Gingerbread) to the ICS ROM. This caused me to loose a lot. Made a nandroid backup (cwm) before proceeding and figured I would be able to get stuff back from it. Well... that's partially correct, could get some apps + settings back, some apps w/o settings and some things not at all.
There's only 2 major things left I really need. My SMS database and battle.net mobile authenticator. The authenticator was restored using appextractor or titanium backup pro. Restoration of the app went fine, but it lost it's key and is thus quite useless as I can't use it to log on.
Is there some hidden place it might store it's serial? If I can't restore it I'll have to go through a procedure to have it removed by Blizzard, which is somewhat cumbersome.
Don't want to restore an entire back-up (ie go back to gingerbread) as several apps have already been re-setup (amongst which my banking app which wasn't restored with it's data either causing me to have to re-subscribe/authenticate it and google authenticator (which btw came by out of backup fine, including it's accounts thus)).
Also am unable to find the SMS database. I have extracted the data.img with unyaffs, but there is no database under the usual com.android.providers.telephony. Samsung probably uses a custom app/location for the database, but haven't been able to find it. Neither titanium backup pro nor appextractor are able to restore the SMS's. Then again, they don't restore wireless either, but since I can just read the wifi/bcm_supp.conf file I don't really care . Just find it strange it doesn't restore whilst the file is that accessible, might be a non-default location as well however...
In case it matters, I run linux >90% of the time. Quite familiar with it, quite new to phones tho' . I do have windows so whatever tools might be required, both OS's are accessible to me.
TIA
Hi xda,
Though my thread title may be a little vague and might supposedly be better asked on google or android per se, just patiently read along as I try to explain my dilemma in more detail.
For ICS users, we all know the convenience of the "backup & restore" feature. Everything from wifi passwords, contacts, and installed apps will be magically restored when you install a new firmware on your phone with a full data wipe. And for us flash junkies, that indeed is really convenient.
But even though I have come to love such feature, I've noticed a few quirks as I was using it over time. The backup manifest or shall I say, the list of backed up data gets cluttered as you continue to backup data over time. This leading to a point where my backup data is now so messed up, whenever it auto restores once again, I see previously uninstalled apps back again and duplicate contact entries. So messed up, that I've decided to stop using this much loved feature and just manually backup my contacts, and re-install apps.
So, I am looking for some solution that I might be somehow able to manually edit that current backed up list (over at google or wherever it's stored), and update which will be restored if ever I flash my phone again. Or wipe that list clean and overwrite it with my current phone state.
Sorry for the long post but I've done my googling and forum searching beforehand only to no avail.
You can forgo that feature entirely and use titanium backup instead, for backing up your personal app data...
Titanium acts a little twitchy when restoring system apps and data across roms with different bases...
Your best bet would be to backup your downloaded apps with titanium, backup contacts and msgs (and call logs) from other market apps (I use go backup)...
For bluetooth and wifi access points, I haven't found anything that is truly cross compatible among roms...so better of you just write it down somewhere and refer that later...

Ok. So I am flashing a friends Samsung D600 Conquer to Straight talk and used android-whiterabbit to generate his [email protected] cdma workshop 2.7 version txt file that automatically writes the nv items. Now the device has no signal but everything else works, just says mobile network not available. Can someone post these 12 nv items so that I may restore them to thier defaults. Pleass exclude sensitive files that contain your phone number and/or meid info. I really just need the ones that are needed to re-enable the radio. Thanks guys. The NV Items are unlocked. The ones that were written are 0318, 0465, 0579, 0910, 1194, 2825, 2953. I have narrowed it down to the problem nv items because only 7 were written sucessfully. Thanks again.
