I've been through the Development subforum for the last 3 hours and am confused as all hell how to accomplish getting stock JellyBean update on this phone. I've tried flashing the ZIP from this thread, but it errors and I have to restore from a backup in order to boot completely. I've already checked that I downloaded the ZIP successfully (md5 matches).
Can some knowledgeable individual please provide a list of details steps to get me on the latest stock JellyBean ROM?

Updated Hboot?
Downgrade TWRP to 2.3.3.0, your version is not working the way it should and follow the installation instructions given in your link (for noobs - also these are not noobish, just pretty exact, lol).
You should be ok then. Else come back here.
--- edit ---
Link for TWRP ville 2.3.3.0
Boot into fastboot mode and flash from your android work directory typing/copying: 'fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.3.3.0-ville.img'
So the problem is TWRP?

Yes that could be the problem but you also need to flash the boot.img file after you installed the rom.
You can flash the boot.img file with Flash Image GUI: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1954121
Or extract the boot.img file from the rom and flash it in fastboot (bootlaoder) with the command: fastboot flash boot boot.img

Hi,
After running with revolutionary and my rooted stock rom 1.47.401.4, I got yesterday a new OTA with 2.10.401.4 (2.3.5 and sense 3).
When trying to install it, it failed (blue android with big "!" on my screen)
First I downgraded my hboot back to 0.98.0000, but than I did something stupid .
I flash my hboot to the one provided with the OTA 2.00.0002, incl radio and all other stuff from the firmware.zip.
Now I ended up with a *** LOCKED *** HBOOT 2.00.0002, but also a 1.47.401.4 rom with android.
I tried to use the RUU_Saga_HTC_Europe_1.47.401.4_Radio_20.28I.30.085 AU_3805.06.02.03_M_release_199410_signed.exe from windows, but that fails as the hboot has the incorrect version.
THe other thing I could do is go back to a 0.98 HBOOT, but that doesn't work either. the rom is ***LOCKED***, I have no root and it's S-ON.
I also searched for an RUU_Sage_HTC_Europe_*2.10.401.4*.exe as that might work because the HBOOT has the right version, but I could not find anything like that
Does anyone have an idea how I can go forward or how to go back ??
My phone is alive again as used the recovery.img procedure below and installed Saga3D 3.0. After that, I tried also the RUU installation to fully go back to stock, but that doesn't work. It complains about a security failure in hboot screen. I locked it back with 'fastboot oem lock', but that doesn't make the RUU work either.

did u try that or u think that wont work?
Before I updated to 2.00.0002, I created a dd-backup on the sdcard for the 0.98.000
when I however use adb to connect, I don't see how I can restore that back without root. I also didn't see the sdcard mounted
I was also thinking ....
Would it maybe also be possible to create a PG88IMG.zip with all the right software for 1.47.401.4 ? and restore that via recovery ? would the current hboot allow a downgrade ?
Today I was able to get the **LOCKED*** off to UNLOCKED via htcdev.com
In the thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1299438
I found this (identical to my problem)
If anyone has the same problem and has hboot-2.00.0002 & S-ON you have to unlock the bootloader via htcdev.com site following all the steps and flash the EXT4 Recovery via FASTBOOT and NOT ADB.!!
Then go to recovery and flash any custom rom.
I don't unserstand what I have to do next. ADB does not work anymore, and only fastboot is available. I downloaded an EXT4 recovery (4EXTRecovery_v2.1.0_saga.zip) which have me an recovery.img and a META-INF folder.
When I name the zip image update.zip, and run
C:\android>fastboot.exe update update.zip
it fails with ...
archive does not contain 'android-info.txt'
archive does not contain 'android-product.txt'
error: update package has no android-info.txt or android-product.txt
How to I proceed to get it working ?
BTW, HBOOT is UNLOCKED but still S-ON
Please help
you already update hboot right. try this
RUU_Saga_S_HTC_Europe_2.10.401.5_Radio_20.4801.30. 0822U_3822.10.08.04_M_release_219480_signed

You can RUU with that correct version or follow my instructions to achieve custom recovery/rom since you are already "unlocked":
Skanob said:
You should be able to change your recovery without any problem if your s-off or unlocked 2.xx.xx hboot s-on.
1. Get 4ext recovery.img
2. connect phone on fastboot
3. In cmd use these command to push the recovery image:
fastboot flash recovery D:\recovery.img (<- should be directory of 4ext recovery image)
fastboot reboot-bootloader
Now you should have 4ext recovery.

From here on you can now flash custom ROMs that you would like that is compatible to Desire S.
Hello folks,
I asked this already in an other thread (topic was similar the same) but with no reply. I guess this forum is more suitable as I just need a straight answer.
I got:
- Android 2.3.5 & Sense 3.0
- Build 2.10.401.8 CL156318
- HBOOT 2.00.0002
- Rooted with SuperOneClick
- Done Unlock with HTCdev
Is there a way to install a Custom ROMs without downgrading HBOOT?
Yes, flash a custom recovery, 4ext or cwm, once installed use recovery to install the roms.
You can only truly s-off by downgrading currently.
Is there anything I will miss if I don't S-OFF but just flash a custom recovery?
@RobaL4
For you no, you just wont be able to flash radios and I think (not 100% sure) hboots.
With HTC unlock you can't change kernel nor radio images so some custom roms will not work at all and some others will lack some kernel specific support/tweaks
I have same problem but at this moment no way for do S-off.

Not entirely true. You can flash a kernel/boot.img in fastboot mode, so there is an extra step involved.
1. Flash the custom ROM in recovery mode.
2. Extract the boot.img from the custom ROM's zip file and place it in the same directory where you have adb.exe and fastboot.exe and then flash it in fastboot mode using the command:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
i tried to flash [ROM] | 04 Jun 2013 | AOSP | 4.2.2 | JellyFireBeanv2 Summer Edition | StrikeX Updated onto my desire s and now its just stock on the htc booting screen

Did you flash the boot.img (from the rom) in fastboot? This is necessary if the phone is htcdev unlocked (and still s-on).
theres a boot image? probably should not have rushed into this haha

i dont know where it is, haha thanks for replying,
1. do i need to flash it via cwm.
2. where can i find it.
3. the phones currently got the bootloader relocked haha but i should be able to unlock it again as its useless atm, its just been entirely formatted via cwm.
You can find the boot.img in the zip file of the rom (extract it from the rom you're flashing).
No, you have to flash it in fastboot mode. You must have adb and fastboot set up on your pc, reboot the phone into bootloader, and use the command :
fastboot flash boot boot.img
There are guides in the desire s general section that include more exact instructions.

Thanks so much, yes i am a newbie. i have rooted a tablet and used to flash it like weekly but never had to flash the boot seperately haha
so i unlocked my bootloder again using the unlock bin file from before and the all in one toolkit, done, booted into cwm, wipe cace, wipe data/factory reset, wipe dalvvik, install the rom, gapps and beats.
then pressed power off, rebooted into fastboot ad flashing using a guide (sorry cant post a link but i will say its called [Tutorial] How to flash a new boot.img via Fastboot)
all done the guide worked perfectly, it seemed so easy, its booted into android setup now thanks so much for getting me into the right direction
As the title says my phone is stuck on the "initiating swagger" bootscreen from my last ROM. So initially I was trying to try out a new 4.3 based rom, but eventually figured out it wasn't working because my HBOOT is too old (1.14.002). From what I gather in order to upgrade my HBOOT safely, I need S-OFF. I had unlocked bootloader and SUPERCID but never got S-OFF. So I tried to restore to the backup I mad in TWRP, but that wouldn't make it past the bootloader, so I downloaded another 4.1.2 ROM instead, which got me to the previously mentioned bootscreen and thats as far as I go. What can I do from here? I gone through countless times, wiping cache, data, factory reset then installing rom, the loading boot.img, but I'm stuck. Any help would be appreciated.

If you're s-on you need to flash the boot.img from the ROM zip via fastboot.
And yes you must have s-off to safely run the 3.18 RUU to meet the requirements for the 4.2.2 ROMs.

TWRP 2.5
That's good problem, 2.5 is full of bugs. You need to upgrade to at least the 2.6 version. Here's how:
Download TWRP 2.6 from here. Put the file in your fastboot folder. Connect phone in fastboot mode, open command prompt from within fastboot folder, issue the following commands:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery "filename.img"
(the exact filename, minus the talking marks)
Code:
fastboot erase cache
Code:
fastboot reboot-bootloader
Now you can enter recovery on your phone and try again.

Awesome, that worked. Now in order to flash a 4.3 mod I need to get S-off and then upgrade the hboot, right? How to I upgrade the hboot?
Thanks a lot.
Actually nevermind, I put hboot 2.14 on there and am now running PACman rom. Thanks again.
Hi! First of all I would like to thank everyone that helped me to get that update via OTA successfully. Now I'm running debranded Android 4.2.2 Sense 5 and I would like to share with you this clear TWRP Backup of freshly installed ROM. All I did to this I made a factory reset before making a backup. I made a backup with TWRP 2.6.3.0 (openrecovery-twrp-2.6.3.0-k2_ul.img). The backed up partitions are: Boot, Data and System.

You can also flash the firmware.zip by changing it name to PL80IMG.zip and placing it on your sd card. Then avoiding the adb and fastboot this time just reboot to bootloader (just reboot the device by pressing power and selecting Restart and just after screen turns off hold the VOL- button until the bootloader appears), then it would search for the file you placed on sd card. When it'll find it it will ask you for flash - confirm by pressing VOL+, then after it completes - POWER to reboot.
If you want, i can put it on my dev-host or androidfilehost account.

Missing language
Yesterday I tried to install this backup. The update process was without any problems but I had the noisy voice. So I went back to Saturn III.
I have seen there is a firmware.zip. Can I use TWRP to install? Or how must this be done???
Another problem was/ is that I couldn't select the right language: I have found "Deutsch (Belgien)" etc but there was no "Deutsch (Deutschland)".
@ old.splatterhand
I believe you have tried this ROM. Which one did you used?
Yes, i tried it. When i remember right, i used Deutschland (United Kingdom).
There popped up various variants to flash the firmware files, but as i didn't i can't give any guide or helping hand at this point.
I will wait, 'til the OTA for my phone is coming, so i will be sure, that i have the correct file (with correct language) for flashing.

Radio haven't changed...? Weird. Maybe this is because of S-ON and you have different CID than listed in android-info.txt, which prevents the flash. I was doing it being S-OFF. I have no idea.

Loading failure...? Interesting. Did you tried restoring it with TWRP that I have? Ok. I change recovery and restore work's but I can't load firmware it shows bad Cid in bootloader. I try both via fastboot and PL80... file. So I must change Cid becouse without this I have noise problem while calling. Is it correct route ?

To be honest... @old.splatterhand said somewhere that it's not a firmware.zip related bug, but it's somewhere inside system files. So propably, when you'll restore from my backup, you should have everything working. Propably. I'm not sure about it, because I haven't tested it myself. And I'm S-OFF so it makes another difference.
Bluetooth was not firmware, noisy problem i think it is.

To be honest - Before ICS downgrade and making updates via OTA on different CID, I've updated bootloader with firmware.zip (the radio version has changed and stuff) and then flashed the odexed 4.2.2 ROM via TWRP and the noisy calls were still there.
