[APP] AOSP Browser - Galaxy Note 8.0 (Tablet) Themes and Apps

Hi folks!
I don't like the way Samsung has themed and made changes to the stock browser. So after digging around through various forums trying to find a browser APK that would work, I came across this. It's a flashable zip with the AOSP 4.1.1 Browser apk. This is the only compatible version I've found for the GN8--anything higher will force close immediately, even after setting the permissions and wiping the cache/data on the app itself.
Figured I'd share the wealth. Please give all credit to the original thread/author. Forum link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2248906 ** SEE EDIT2 **
EDIT: Note--you may need to rename the SecBrowser.apk in the /system/apps, then follow the directions in the linked thread. Also the AOSP browser will not work with multiwindow without further modifications.
EDIT2: Use the zip attached to my second post in this thread if you don't like the orange arrows in your browser. I'm leaving the original link up because I want to give credit to the original author. Please give him a thanks!

I do like most of the browser better, but is there a way to get rid of the screenwide orange arrows with suggested URLs that appear as you start to enter a URL? I didn't see it obviously in the settings.

Oh, wow, I didn't notice those before. How hideous. I've found another working AOSP Browser.apk that I've put into that flashable zip. Ther's still some arrows on the far right hand side, but they're much less obnoxious and don't go across the entire screen.
Tested on my tab and attached to this post.

AOSP Swype theme - done but how do I apply?

I created a AOSP theme for Swype but I can't seem to get it applied. Any pointers?
Edit: All I did was redesign the images in the keyboard asset folder. I tried to use the Swypechanger tool but couldn't get that to work. So right now I have all the needed images just no way of either inserting them into a working APK or updating a current Swype install.. I'd like to test it out for bugs first but it's seems pretty solid.
I would love to see this. I think you would need to stick them in one of the apk's with com.swype at the front.
Maybe ask the person behind this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=701198

[request] Themed 3G icon

can anyone post up a themed version of the stock or new MIUI rom flashable 3G indicator, themed to match this (or both):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788214
Thanks!
Do you mean you're after:
A theme for MIUI which has the 3G icons from that theme
or
That theme with the MIUI 3G icons?
Josh.

I know. I really want it lol, because i kinda hate the 3G indicator in the theme i have currently, as it's hard to see the upload/download arrows, so i just wanted a flashable indicator so I dont lose the cool notification pulldown
I can edit it with photoshop if I can find it. Can anyone give me a hint to the file path?
EDIT: Hah...ok I suck and fail.
I found the apk and edited the images. Looked great. Put the apk back together. Unistalled the original apk and tried to install my modified apk. Would not install. I'm done with it for now. I guess I will read up on signing tomorrow although I thought I had read that system apps didn't need to be signed.
I'll play with it more tomorrow.
do adb pull /system/framework/framework-res.apk
And the images should n in the drawable-hdpi. Folder if not just look around until u find the images
Then pull the framework from your current Rom and replace your images with the images you want then repush your framework hack to the phone and reboot

If you figure it out can you pack a zip of just the 3g icon in blue as well for me?
Thanks man
Thanks for the tips. With a little help from google, I was able to figure it out.
Which icon did you need exactly? The 3g toggle or the notification bar?
well, i did it and replaced some old icons with cooler looking ones, but the 3g icons (along with similar data icons) did not show up. all of the other ones showed up. also, i read a thread where this dude got 4g icons from another rom and installed them on his phone to make it look like he had 4g, but then hours later, he experienced loss of mobile data... and now i think i am too... any suggestions?
I'm sorry I can't help you. I am learning all this myself and wouldn't pretend to know where to start on that. All I can say is that if you are going to make any changes then backup early and often.
The 3g toggle icons I was looking for were in system/app. I merely reskinned them and dropped them back in.

i wanted notification bar icon
I'm running a theme and mine is already skinned. I think either way you would still have to adb push it onto your phone. I did some googling and took a crash course on changing system icons.
Once I figured it out, it made sense (i know that sounds stupid, but after i did it, I was like oh yeah I get it now). I know that's not a big help, but I'm new to this and wouldn't want to bork your phone. Maybe someone more knowledgable will come save the day.
Otherwise I would google in terms like editing apks and adb pull adb push etc. and maybe you will figure it out too.
Hell I can't wait to ruin my phone now that I am armed and dangerous =)

Lol, i actuallly finally figured out how to extract the png's, so i am going to edit in photoshop, then replace the current images with the app ninjamorph.
*didnt work* left a huge blank space on noti. bar and when I rebooted to see if it would show, I bootlooped*
Well. I spent last night learning to resign edited apk files, so literally nothing on my phone is safe now.

Is there any way to pack the png's so that I can flash them or install as an apk?
Anyone know how I'd do this? I already have the edited png's.
Can I send any of you guys the folder with the icons and you can help me out with this?
Thanks again
It seems the easiest way to change or theme icons is to not unzip them. Just open them with 7zip and make your changes, then close it. They will stay compressed and all of the info and size will remain intact.
Once changed you will have to resign the apk or zip file.
I spent the better part of 2 hours reading up on it using these forums and google, but I do not in any way feel knowledgable enough to instruct you on the finer points. There are oodles of topics on editing apk's and signing them when you are finished.
The steps seem pretty clear:
1. download or pull apk
2. open with 7zip
3. make changes keeping sizes and file names the same
4. close
5. re-sign the apk or zip file (most likely have to delete the existing files to the original signing which will be replaced with your own)
6. push or install the zip or apk (make sure the original app is uninstalled prior to reinstalling the changed app)
There are various methods and tools. The most helpful thread I found on signing is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=473580
I hope this covers it all and is helpful to you. I am new at it and can only tell you to backup everything and if you are unclear on any of it, then don't attempt it.
Read all the posts related to it. There is great info and plenty of feedback on known issues or mistakes others have had.

I had the exact same problem as you did trying to get that wallpaper back...
I really do like it a lot & I think it's the best of the entire bunch that is included in that ROM.
The long answer to your question is in this thread, second post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1480248, which states,
How i can get the blue eye (or any other) wallpaper again?
Which ROM was it in? Do you still have the .zip?
- Pull the system/app/Launcher.apk
- Unzip it. Yes, apk is a zip file.
- Look in res/drawable-hdpi folder.
Although I did manage to open the apk file mentioned above, I did not see that particular image at all. I even tried a bunch of other files, and of course, it wasn't there, either.
Needless to say, I managed to find the wallpaper I was looking for on another of lumin30's posts and I saved it to my harddrive.
*************************************************************************************************************************
I stand corrected. If you follow lumin30's instructions, (written directly below this post), then you will indeed find that exact file. It is called, "default_wallpaper.jpg". From what I can tell, it's the only wallpaper that is in that file.
*************************************************************************************************************************
I know that some images need to be resized depending on the launcher that you're using. I kept having problems with my wallpapers fitting correctly when I was using Go Launcher EX.
I read around on the Internet & found a post suggesting an app called Wallpaper Wizard ii. It's available on Google Play Store for free. The good thing about that app is that you can use it on whatever image you want.
Before you give up, perhaps you should give that a try.
The default wallpaper is found in the \system\framework\framework-res.apk.
Then in framework-res.apk --> \res\drawable
I tried the picture you posted but when I try to use it as my background, it's a blurry and not the whole picture

I pulled it straight from the ROM for you.
I use this one...

@itzik2sh
Got any more backgrounds? I'm looking for brighter ones since all icons in VB are kind of dark. Thanks!
does anyone know how to put the whole background in?? because it forces me to crop it and i dont want that
Whenever I used Wallpaper Wizard ii, I just set it to "scale" & it looked good to me.
I can't tell you for sure what all that did, but I was satisfied with the results.
Good luck & don't forget to let us know if you find something that works better for you.
Put the wallpaper in framework-res.apk in the res/drawable-hdpi folder then reflash the rom
i found it, do i just post it anywhere in the folder??

Couldnt he just push the .apk to /system/framework and boot to recovery and fix permissions? That would avoid having to reflash and download apps right?

Stock Internet Icon

Hey guys, does anybody know the location for the stock touchwiz icons. For example i am using the apex launcher and i would like to use dolphin browser as my default browser in the dock on the main screen. However i would like to keep the stock internet icon. I know you can change the icon for the shortcut i just have no idea where it is. Any ideas?

I don't believe there is any way to get at them strictly via the file explorer. However, if you download one of the the TouchWiz ROMs on here, you can extract the icons from there and just copy them over to your phone. I believe they're in the framework apk, which you can extract with 7zip or what have you, but I'm not in a position to check right now (not supposed to download random stuff like that on my work computer).
Well the stock Internet apk is located in two files: /system/app/SecBrowser_VZW.apk and system/app/Sec_BrowserVZW.apk.odex
I'm thinking the icon would be in that directory. To be safe, I'd actually download a stock rom and pull the app from there and mess with it. I wouldn't pull it from your current phone just in case you messed something up.

Here is a link to a tutorial I wrote on editing .9.png files. It's part 2 of 3 but the most directly aapplicable to what you are trying to do.
It links up with the other two parts at the top of the post, so if you need to catch up on using some of the tools from part 1, it's right there.
SOLVED
SlimSnoopOS - Exactly where you said they would be. Followed your instructions and downloaded a TW ROM from XDA. One question though. when i get into SecBrowser_VZW.apk i see that there is a couple different versions of the icon. Would it be best for me to always try and grab the highest resolution one that i can find.
Jarredw - Amazing. Thank you.
Blue6IX - If i understand this correctly, with this guide i can edit the icon from within the apk itself so i don't have to use a custom icon with APEX Launcher? If so that is awesome, im just wondering if it would affect updating of the app?
You'd have to re-add the icon and recompile the .apk file each time it updated.
I mostly threw it here so you could learn how to extract the icon, which someone else did for you while I was typing it up.
Anyways, now you can freely edit icons for any apps you have on the device, at the very least extract all the ones you want to keep around.
Ya, that's what i figured. Thank you.

Most launchers have that function built in. That's probably why nobody has heard of it.

Would you mind elaborating a bit more For us not so advanced users on what we need to do please. I, and I'm sure others would be very appreciative.

This along with side loading the hangout app makes it possible to just about have 4.4 from a ui point of view. I get random battery drain from android os or services but its never terrible and always stops after a reboot. In also running cm. Oh and the search by "OK Google" would always fc on me regardless of using the UK English work around.

Tried it when it just came out. Google Search FC everytime I try to search with voice even after the aformentioned lib fix. Have yet to try with P.A.C. ROM which I flashed just a few days ago.
Also modifies Google Search system wide, so if you use Google Search in Nova or other launchers it would take you to the Google Expereince launcher, which kinda sucks because you get this very noticable lag getting to Search.
Otherwise, its nice, but crashes occasionally, would be sticking to Nova Prime.

Never mind, I feel like a moron I figured out how to get everything to work perfect except for the wallpaper. For all of those wanting search and everything else to work, you need to move the appropriate lib files into the system/lib folder like mentioned above. There is a post on this forum for the nexus 7 I think, that has all the apps, lib files, and font files all for download in zip format. To make the launcher work properly and the apps, you just need to be rooted and more the appropriate lib files over.
