As the title states I was wondering, after skimming through the HD forums that it seems like rooting and unlocking boot loader is just too much of a risk, I loved flashing roms and such on my optimus one but I'm iffy as to even attempt a root let alone a flash on a $500 device....

Rooting is but I haven't flashed a ROM.
Rooting and flashing ROMs is easy even on consumer xt926 with safestrap and the other utilities out there. The only problem atm the new 4.1.2 update and downgrading. I'm sure a fix is/will be out soon tho. This phone is very dependable just make sure to have backups and do research before trying.

I'll post exactly what I posted when someone asked about unlocking boot loaders...
QUOTE=slickfing;39533253]IF ONLY U KNEW WHAT AN UNLOCKED BOOTLOADER COULD DO FOR U..YOU'D UNLOCK AND NOT ASK.
I HAVE AND IT'S THE BEST THING I EVER DID TO MY PHONE. I was wondering why I could flash easily on my s3 and note 2..till I read that those already shipped with UNLOCKED BOOTLOADERS..If samsung ships its phones with unlocked bootloaders (aside verizon), how could that be bad?
Know what I have done with my phone sizes?
1. I have flashed a recovery
2. backed up my rom
3. debloated my rom
4. removed my soft keys (u should see my screen)
5. phone runs excellently..no lag
6. installed LMT launcher
7. replaced my boot animation
List will continue and I've only had the phone for 4 days.
That's how awesome an unlocked bootloader has made my phone.
I dont use my s3 or note 2 anymore...actually sold them both.
Now i need to figure out how to overclock the phone.
Open to suggestions.[/QUOTE]
..n, I rooted my phone on a 4.1.2. Didn't downgrade

See now but you can't unlock bootloader on vzw XT926 consumer edition... So it means you can have root on JB 4.1.2 If you can downgrade successfully and keep root successfully. But won't be able to flash roms cause of locked BL? Am I getting that right?

Since Motorola announced that KitKat will be coming to the HD, hopefully another boot loader unlock will follow. My phone was stolen and the Assurion sent me a replacement that was already upgraded to latest OTA.
Something a lot of us are hoping for.

Not trying to be a party pooper but if anything changes with the boot loader its only going to be even harder to crack... that's the point of an update they're not going to make stuff easier for the dev community, especially not on a Verizon device haha as for the rest of us, we can always unlock through moto (xt925)

XT925/ "international version" can be unlocked through Motorola just fine, the only device locked down is the XT926 and I doubt that's going to change anytime soon (officially anyway) and it sure won't be any easier to unlock it after an update

The 925 should be able to be unlocked through the Moto website.
so just to be clear the bootloader doesn't necessarily have to be unlocked first via moto site...i can use this toolkit 4.0 utility that has an option to unlock bootloader is this accurate?

I think it depends on the system version, but I'm not really sure for the 925. For the 926, you had to be on the version that was two OTAs ago to be able to unlock. For the 925, you can try Motopocalypse, the worst it will do is fail. If it doesn't work, then the website should work fine for you.

Honestly, I'm kind of biased. I just got the Razr M in January and it was my first smart phone, ever. So, naturally, I was impressed because it was such a drastic improvement over my dumb phone. I purchased my HD used in September and I like it even more than the M. The battery life is noticeably better and the screen is better. It also has a lot more memory than the M, which I think accounts for why it feels a little quicker than the M. The ROM and processor are the same as the M, though. Luckily, I was able to unlock the bootloader on the M and I purchased the HD unlocked, so my custom options are endless. It wouldn't hurt to boot it and see how you like it, prior to modifying it.
Exactly what I was getting at...I was wondering in terms of customizing it. I guess being somewhat familiar with the Samsung method was wondering how easy it was for moto cuz it sort of sounds more complicated or maybe it's just unfamiliar...u know what I mean?

Yeah, I know what you mean. My first experience with Android was my Tab2 and it was really easy to unlock. I didn't see which model of the HD you picked up. If you are international, you are good. Yes, it is kind of a pain to unlock through the Moto website, but if you're good with ADB, I believe you run ADB commands to unlock the BL. If you have the 926 and it's on the latest OTA, you're out of luck for root or unlocking.

I've got the 925...in Canada. And shipped with ICS 4.0 if not mistaken. Well i'm still a noob at this but i've flashed alot so i have a base knowledge.
I wasn't aware of HD getting 4.4, that's nice.

You should be able to unlock your BL using ADB or the Moto website. Then, you'll be able to load up a custom recovery and flash some ROMs. The only bad thing, though, is that not all the custom ROMs support the 925.
I've been trying it out today...It came with 4.1.2 installed. So far I like it. Do u know if I can use Dan Rosenberg's methods like the motochopper and as u suggested motopocalypse. What I understand I can unlock the boot loader with Motorola but is this less advantageous than with motopoc....all this bugs me about the phone seems very difficult to gain root

It has been my experience, and I have rooted and unlocked at least 10 different personal Android devices, that updates seem to move the unlocking process along. Finding differences in the code seems to allow devs to pinpoint potential exploits. That being said, you are absolutely correct in saying that an updated bootloader is harder to crack. This is why almost every exploit for any device that has been rooted comes with the disclaimer to not update to the newest latest greatest software.
Fortunatly, the newest update does not prevent the seem edit that unlocks the SIM. I am using my xt926 on T-Mobile because, screw Verizon.
To the new people considering unlocking, I highly reccommend unlocking for the sake of battery performance. I have the Razr HD Maxx and the battery lasts a very reasonable 24-26 hours with light to medium usage. Running PacMan, my battery lasted at least 48 hours and sometimes into 3 days.

I am certain that there is already one that was floated around sometime last year. I doubt Motogoogle is motivated to change anything via petition especially if these petitions represent people that have already purchased the device. Instead they will improve the next product, in this case the Moto X.
Went from Ultra Maxx Dev Ed to Moto X Dev Ed.
Love the clean, mostly bloat-free X but the battery blows. I was getting two full days of the Maxx with still 10-15% whereas on the X I am down to 10-15% after 8 hrs.
So- I would love to run the X firmware on my Maxx, stock as possible, just BL unlocked (Dev Ed) so I can root and enable native tether/hotspot.
If anyone would be willing to point me in the right direction, I'd really appreciate it.
Seems like there's more than one firmware and way to do it so I'd be grateful for a little guidance.
Oh, and I want to run 4.4.4.
Thanks to anyone willing to help!
Would this be the best way to go for what I'm describing? --> http://forum.xda-developers.com/dro...4-4-snakes-venom-4-4-4-port-build-64-t2828366
I had Venom on my Maxx Dev Edition 4.4.4 (23.3.23) and it worked perfectly. Just understand what the additional zips do before you flash them....if you're trying to stay close to stock.
I just switched back to stock using Samurai's RSDFlasher once the 23.3.24 update (and FXZ!) was released.

the easiest option to do that its flashing Snake's Venom Rom, because its basically Moto X Firmware adapted to maxx, thats the way to go.

Abstract: you wanna root your Motorola Razr HD (xt925) ?
You can't go anymore with the "gentle procedure" - which is using Motochopper, a way to root the 4.1.2 without tearing apart your phone.
So either you go back with a stock 4.1.2 and live happily with motochopper and a slow sys, or you follow Motorola instructions to unlock the phone. Be aware that once you enter the code Motorola will provide you'll void your warranty (if you still are under the grace period).

Is this still the case? My phone was auto-upgraded to 4.4.2... I'm stuck?
My Droid Maxx (bought new) will complete 2 years next month.
I try and use my phones for at least 3 years.
Now, my device is bootloader unlocked (thanks to Sunshine) and pretty happy with it.
Currently I am using Exodus ROM (5.1.1 - not the latest nightly though) and wondering what other unlocked users of this great device are using.
There are no updated ROMS - here I am referring to security updates such as this one which came out yesterday
https://source.android.com/security/bulletin/2016-02-01.html
This leaves all our devices vulnerable to the scores of vulnerabilities which are unpatched (a) since Motorola abandoned this device on 4.4.4 and (b) the developers stopped supporting since October/ November.
A fantastic device, without security patches is not quite what we would expect, but perhaps we need to live with it.
I'll be (attempting) to build CM13 for the Droid Maxx (XT1080). Currently running CM12.1 nightlies, on Feb 1, 2016 security patch. Let's see how CM13 goes then I'll be excited to see how long this battery will run I'm definitely planning on using it for a little while (I just purchased used off eBay a week or so ago, and another for parts to replace broken screen, internals if necessary Anyone interested in trying to "rebuild" a dev community for this device?

This is awesome.
I would be happy to participate in any way, though I am not a developer and this device is my only phone right now.
I could look for a used Droid Maxx, but with the limitations on the bootloader version, it is difficult to find an unlockable Droid Maxx with 32GB ROM.
This is one hell-of-a-beast device and does not disappoint me.
