So i'll preface this by saying, there isn't a thread dedicated to this topic, and the other topics don't really address this issue head on. It's really to try and provide neo hybrid owners with a good source of where to get a cable that meets all the requirements.
Basically neo hybrid owners, besides the cable supplied with the galaxy nexus:
micro usb cables currently being used,
whether or not you had to modify it in any way
if it [email protected] the standard 1900mah rating
i've struggled to find a usb cable that works other than the oem, which is a bit shorter than i'd like. i went through a bunch of cables without the case on and to my pure shock, most of them charged at a rate ranging from 300 - 780!

so went through about 10 cables, only one non oem cable actually rated 1900mah charge rate, which was by iluv but doesn't fit the neo hybrid. scoured the amazon reviews and no one really mentioned working cables there just that they had issues with non oem cables on there as well

The white Kindle cable I have fits. I have no idea what rate it charges at, though.
My media bridge charging usb charges at full rate, but I had to mod it to fit.
Note that media bridge sells two different types of usb cables. The ones with the grey connectors are charge only and that is what I am using.
They are dirt cheap and ship prime on Amazon, so modding them is not to scary.

hm, actually ordered two cables from media bridge (the black connectors). One i lost (ordered 2 because I knew it would lose one) and the other actually stopped working. You just reminded me to call about warranty, as they have a nice 1 year warranty.

actually managed to find my spare cable, it's great in terms of quality and it charges @ 1900mah, and i'm waiting to hear back about the cable that isn't working (the prongs no longer keep the cable in place when connected). i'll have to modify this type of cable to work but it's better than using a cable that charges slowly.
I use a dremel tool to trim the plastic on the USB cable to make it mine fit. I do the same with audio (3.5mm headphone jack) cables.

i should have broken out the dremel. instead I used a razor blade, came out fine though...
also heard back about my defective cable, just had to provide some info and a picture of the cable cut in half and i'm good to go to get a new cable.
I have the black mediabridge 6ft cable. It works but it charges extremely slow compared to stock cable. Possibly because of its length? Not sure
That's odd, it charges at the same 1900mah rate that the stock cable does. It should take the same amount of time regardless.

Yep. Bought that one for the car and bought 2 6ft ones for indoors. All work flawlessly.
I ordered some generic cables on eBay and they work just fine. I do like the way that the micro usb side of the cable that came with the phone is angled, making it easier to plug in in the dark.
I've looked online and found the Samsung replacement part but it appears they are only 2' 9" long (which is a LOT shorter than the cable that came with the phone).
Here's one of the sites where I found this:
http://www.daydeal.com/product.php?productid=38609&cat=888
Has anyone seen a longer (and possibly cheaper) cable like this?
Thanks!

Just buy the monoprice cable and score the right side of the microusb end with a knife or something so you can easily insert it in the dark.
Anyone seen one that is at a right angle that goes in the phone instead up straight up?
So when plugged in, in the car and mounted it doesn't go up like 2 inches before it turns back down.
**nevermind found one on ebay (searched usb cable micro angled)
I bought a 2 pack of retractable cables on ebay for portable charging. To my surprise they work to transfer data, too. It's interesting because the last retractable phone cable I bought could only be used to charge (samsung instinct)
Bought mine from NewEgg and an expensive one is about $15. I choose some that were $4 a piece. Works great
Just placed my order for 2 6ft ones. One to have at work and one at home.

do not get right angle! I made that mistake, it covers the 3.5 mm audio.
get an "Up angle" for a while usbfirewire.com was the only vendor and was $16 to $20 shipped depending on length, but they recently started showing up on ebay for $7 shipped.
I got an up angle from this vendor and it came fairly fast for hong kong (abut 7 days) and was a very good gauge and quality:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Usb-male-AM-up-angle-90-degree-micro-B-cable-/390255590008
$7 shipped
Can anyone recommend a *thin and flexible* USB charging cable? I bought these from Amazon and although they work fine, they are too stiff and thick and I am worried that they will damage my port with prolonged use since I have to bend the cable before the phone lies flat on the table while charging. There are many other options out there but it is hard to judge by the picture how thin and flexible the cable is. I am looking for something as thin and flexible as the OEM cable. Thanks
Got mine in the mail the other day. Took about 3 days or so to get. Very quick shipping. The usb part that plugs into the phone is pretty snug.
Just got my Epic back from Samsung since they had to replace the screen and the usb cables I ordered from Monoprice had also arrived.
2 of the 3ft cables:
http://www.monoprice.com/products/p...=10303&cs_id=1030307&p_id=8640&seq=1&format=2
1 of the 6ft cables:
http://www.monoprice.com/products/p...=10303&cs_id=1030307&p_id=8641&seq=1&format=2
total came to: $6.19 all together and as expected these cables are of amazing quality
I had to re-root my Epic and used one of the 3ft cables and it worked perfectly, no corruptions and I've been using it as USB Storage and no bad transfers and the speed is excellent!
I bought two of their cables a while back. One of them for some reason would not fit my phone. They gave me a refund and told me to keep the cable.
thanks...i was looking for some extra cables my blackberry cable no longer stays in the port and the stock one is crap. Bought 4 cables and a charger for $8 shipped.

Yeah I order all of my cables through Monoprice. I ordered a half dozen of their 6' micro usb cables when me and the wife first got our phones. They work great. I even use one in the car. I can't stand those stretchy car charger cables. I'm sure those stretchy chargers have broken more than one usb port in their time, with all of that constant tension on the slot...
I have always used Monoprice to buy HDMI cables after reading reviews about them from websites and how well they compared vs cable from Monster for ALOT lower cost. I just recently ordered and received 6 Micro USB cables (4 x 3' and 2 x 6') for less than $10 (with tax and shipping I live in CA) and they have been incredible so far, even better than the Blackberry cables I ordered last time from Amazon.
Why not eBay? Micro USB cables are commodity items. The one I got off eBay works fine, and it cost all of 99 cents. It cost the seller almost half of the purchase price just to ship it to me via first-class mail.

You're lucky, most of them are ****ty quality straight from Hong Kong. They charge slow and don't transmit data (even when I connect to the charger the phone thinks I'm connected to a computer lol). I've purchased 3 different ones, ebay is for batteries and other things but never cables
Filter the eBay search to only display sellers shipping from the US. The cables still might be from HK, but at least you won't have to wait a month for it cross the Pacific and get through customs.

I wish I would have found this post a *long* time ago before I started having cable issues. I have ordered cables from Monoprice and can confirm that they are the real deal. They work when Blackberry, LG, and HTC cables do not.
I am probably weird, but I have had many issues with my Samsung Epic with ODIN uploads, and the cable has always been the culprit. I've a few brands of cables out on my Epic and my friends' Epics when using ODIN. Here is a rough list of what worked for me and what did not:
Monoprice cable - always works for odin. Always works for charging. Always works for data transfer.
HTC cables - usually works for Odin. Always works for charging. Nearly always works for data transfer.
Sony PRS reader cable - used to always work for Odin, but varies with the device. Always works for charging. Almost always works for data transfer.
Blackberry 8800 data cable - Sometimes works for Odin. Almost always works for data. Always works for charging.
LG data cables - highly problematic. Works for charging. Does not usually work for data transfer.
Yeah I've found the same thing with one LG cable I have, use it strictly for charging in the car
Your welcome
ive used monoprice for audio and hdmi cables. fantastic site. good quality. for my usb phone cables ive had good lucky with the 99 cent ebay ones. free shipping no less.
Hi, I hope you're doing well.
I'd like to purchase an additional high quality micro USB cables. Any thoughts on where I can get one?
I know eBay merchants have generic micro USB cables, but their quality may be lacking. Also, the Nexus 4 micro USB cable has 4 pins instead of 5 pins. Also, some generic low quality cables will charge slower.
Thanks!

Numbers one and two would be fine but I would use caution if you have a case on your phone. The LG cable has a large plug and there may be clearance issues. I would not get the third one because I don't trust those retracting mechanisms. They look like they would break easily. Number 2 would be my choice.

Of the three links you put, I wouldn't touch the third one with a 10ft pole. These are very common low quality cables mass produced, re-badged, and sold across the world. If you go to a Pound Store in England, these are the kind of cables you will see... without the logo. You can buy super-low quality cables anywhere, but you aren't guaranteed of their longevity, or quality... or even functionality. I bought a cheap cable from a Pound Store once because I needed one right away to charge my phone and it did just that. However, one day I figured I'd do some dev work and that cable was sitting on the side. I plugged in and nothing happened... strange... I plugged in a different device... again nothing. I tried a different cable and it worked fine. I chopped the cheap cable in half (only in the interests of science ) and it turns out the data cable, part of the USB standard plug, was totally missing. Only power and ground, (and maybe one of two data cables, i dont remember) was present.
I currently use an Akasa cable. Like most Akasa products, they are very durable. It never seems to wear out. Mine is thrown in my bag, used all over the place, pulled, plugged in, its heavily worn but it still works. It's not fashionable like the ones you put above, but it's very reliable.
Best of all, you can't beat the price at less than £3.
http://www.scan.co.uk/products/1m-a...)-to-micro-b-(male)-ideal-for-mobiles-cameras
You really don't need to spend much to get a good quality USB cable, but if you do buy cheap, you will no doubt be buying again very soon.

I'll be placing an order for one later today! I shouldn't have purchased the one from Amazon yesterday.
Hey!
Found this forum as I was looking into why the h*** my USB chargers didnt charge my new S4 :silly:
This thread helped me a lot: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2274321
But one question remains unanswered:
Where to find a decent USB cable that serves same ammunt of current as the original charger+cable?
I feel a need for a longer cable than the 1M delivered with the phone.
First I tried a cheapo 3M cable, unshielded=300mA
Then a shielded 3M=600mA
Cut the shielded 3M one into a 70cm cable, and did not connect the shield=1900mA, just as the original cable.
Is it really so that any cable more than 1M long cannot be used if I want to achieve the full amps?
Or is there a good quality cable 2-3M out there just waiting for me to find it?
From my experience of buying Micro USB cables for use whilst driving and charging the phone.
All apart from the supplied Samsung cable are useless and don't deliver the 1900 mah charge.
I have lots of Mini USB cable or various lengths which I don't use any more.
So, I decided to buy a micro to mini USB adapter.
I bought it from Amazon UK http://www.amazon.co.uk/Mini-Micro-Adapter-Charger-Converter/dp/B008CAH5NA/ref=sr_1_1/275-7996231-0241748?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1373119829&sr=1-1&keywords=micro+to+mini+adapter Other suppliers will have them.
It works perfectly on any mini cable I attach it to, cheap retractable's to long length cable, giving 1900 mah all the time.
I've since bought another 2.
If you buy one of the above, you might need to remove some plastic from the end that fits into the phone, as it can slip out of the phone when tugged.
That only effected the first one I bought, not the other two.
It's easy it fix, just use a sharp knife in the joint seem of the plastic, to separate both halves, file off any excess plastic and close the plastic case around the metal work, it will relock into place.
In my opinion, for the price it's worth buying at least one.
I found a 10' cable (~3M) that charges at the same 1.9 rate as the stock cable.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=43321912#post43321912
You might want to consider monoprice. Have used their HDMI cables for years. Got a buddy in TV for 35 years who has used their cables at the network forever. They're also very reasonable. Their premium cable (6ft) will set you back $3 US +shipping.

I just got my S4 and my existing set up does not deliver the needed current. I am not surprised the existing cable did not work since it was a flat wire that I pulled from a retractable setup. It looked nice running up my dash. Now I have to find a replacement. I only need about 50 centimeters or about 20 inches.
Any suggestions?

*Note:
Not all cases accept the size of the usb connector though, as it is slightly larger than the stock cable, without notification.

Huh. So if your phone needs more than 1A it looks like only official OEM cables are good?
But for the average smartphone that needs only 1A they sound pretty good.
Now I wonder how the cheaper ones fare. Next time I am in the area I'll test them in the store. They're to far from me to just drive to, but I do go to the area a couple times a year. Save the shipping and stock up while I'm there if they're good.
Have you found any 3rd party cables that are cheaper than official Samsung but also reliably put out 2A?
My current phone only needs 1A but can't hurt to look into better cables anyhow.
Thanks.

right now im using a oem blackberry microUSB that came with my old curve. it still gives me my full 1900mah, and i know they can be had dirt cheap.
my rule of thumb is, thicker is better (thats what she said). paper thin cables you get at a kiosk at a mall or at a gas station normally are the weaker cables. the thicker the better. both my blackberry and the samsung usb cable are allot thicker then the average $.99 cable.
i suppose if your phone dosent need the higher amps, try a cheapy. my GS4 charges ALLOT faster with a proper cable, so ill spend the few extra bucks.
Okay. So OEM blackberry cables. I just bought the OEM blackberry playbook flip charger for $4.50, dirt cheap and the best charger in the house. Haha. To bad its cable is built in.
