So I'm sitting here seeing all these lovely people with CM10 on there tabs and feeling down and i remembered from awhile ago doing a gt-p5000 there were 3 variations of the tab one of them being a GSM model and I'm sitting here wondering as to why the gsm model(5100) wouldn't work for the (sgh-i497) I know I'm probably very crazy and having slightly wishful thinking but arn't they basically the same device
I would love to know this as well... or at least if anyone has thought to take a tmo rom and use that. Why is there no obvious dev work on the att version? Sure att sucks, but that is what im stuck with.
The GT-P5100 series is a totally different tablet than the I497. They have different CPU, GPU, Chipset, GPS structure, and a different network band support. I am sure there are more differences.

Hello everyone,
I have a 3G Samsung Vibrant. In light of the recent launch, I'd like to know if anyone has replaced the 3G modem chipset in the Vibrant 3G with a "4G" modem chipset used in the Vibrant 4G. I am interested in trying to do this if it is feasible.
It seems that, since the phones are identical except for the modem/GPS chips and the FFC (which has already been modded into the 3G Vibrant), this might be possible with the right compliments of kernel drivers for (as intermediate steps) both of the chipsets.
So we extract the new kernel drivers from the 4G Vibrant ROMs, install chipsets from broken or ebayed 4G vibrants into our 3G vibrants, recompile the kernel...etc?
What do you guys think? Possible?

No you can't it doesn't work like that unfortunately. IMO you're far far far better off buying a 4G model with a broken screen and swapping out screens or something. The soldering used to attach these chips is impossible to do by hand.

2 different companies
2 different philosophies
there is no bootloaders to worry about or s-off or any of that crap on samsung phones. its easy to swap out the modems without bricking your device
HTC phones are completely different. swap out the radio and if the radio doesnt work, it will probably brick it.
Samsung has ODIN and Heimdall which are lifesavers when it comes to hacking
HTC has......... RUUs as long as you didnt brick with a bad radio flash
also, the tmo samsung t989 and the skyrocket 727 are the SAME phone....with only a change to some firmware and i believe the positioning of the accellorometer
i really wish that hack had never been discovered because since then, EVERY device that comes out that same question gets asked.....its not fair! they can do it on phone X how come it wont work on phone M?!?

Seeing as the One S gets both AT&T and T-Mobile 3G/4G I assume AT&T purposely blocked the bands because they suck.

I'm one of those guys that's interested in tinkering with things, including messing with the hardware of a phone, so logically what I found interesting about the latest rumors about the next hottest phone on the planet was that the Exynos version of the S4 will support LTE but won't have an LTE modem in it, while the Snapdragon version will have an LTE modem.
I'd like to assume that if you had two identical phones (any make/model), and one had a burned out modem for example, while the other had a burned out CPU, you could swap the modem chip to the working phone. I'm assuming the pinout on the CPUs would be completely different, thus preventing a CPU swap, yes this would void ANY and ALL warranties...
I have two questions based on this:
1) This one is a two-part question.
a) Will the 3G phone with the Exynos be unlocked?
b) If it is, is there any reason why it wouldn't be able to register with a US carrier?
2) If the above is possible, I can't help but wonder how difficult it would be for a professional to swap the modem chips between the two phones...
Admittedly, I don't know much about the boards on phones other than that I've seen JTAG ports added to some and RS232 ports added to others, but if those can be done, what's to stop someone (with the right experience) from doing a modem chip swap to get their Exynos to have 4G?
If this is one of those noob questions I'm sorry -- I'm more of a power user than anything, so I just don't know about the hardware aspect, but thats just something that would make sense to me.

1. Carrier branded phones will be locked but you can find unlocked versions in cell phone stores.
If it is unlocked it will work with us carriers but not on LTE but HSPA +.
2. It not only hardware issues involved, there is also software issues involved as different chips are interconnected both on soft and hard levels so the phone does not have any conflicts on the motherbaord.
Seeing as how the LTE allows for a completely mobile tablet experience and has that additional 16Gb of storage; Not to mention the ability to text and call via Hangouts why does no developer support it?
Sure I've got mine rooted and have xposed installed and it's a great ROM, doesn't mean it's the best anyone can do. I'm just confused by the lack of 3rd party support for the LTE.
If you really go through the development section some of the ROMs for the Wifi only version are being ported.
The Shield isn't a massively cheap device, all the more for the LTE variant. I'd reckon that you'd see faster ports/rom releases for the LTE model if you bought one of the devs one. It's hard to test/develop for a device that you don't have and make sure that it will still work.
Another reason in addition to what everyone has mentioned is that the LTE one came out much later then the wifi one. So there has been a lot less time to get things working on it.

I have been noticing, ever since the MM update came out earlier this year, development has slowed to a crawl for this phone. There are a few roms that look really nice, but are not really good as a daily driver, as some have missing functions such as Phone and Contacts, and other stuff is glitchy. But over on the international G900F forums they are overloaded with different great roms with tons of support and updates and all that good stuff. And looking at the difference between the Sprint G900P Galaxy S5 and the Unlocked variant (The G900F in particular) they have 95% of the same internal components, with the only difference being the Modem to communicate with the CDMA (Sprint) and GSM (every other carrier basically) Towers. This is the reason why the roms will boot, and everything will work perfectly hardware and driver wise other than picking up a signal for the Sprint Users.
So what I am asking is if there is a Developer out there who can compile a flash-able zip or something alike that includes the drivers for the Modem and sprint Libs. Or even if there is someone who has a background in this that could point me into a good place to start, I would be glad to do it. What does everyone think about this?
my question for you is why do you want this? I only ask because i was running MOAR 7.0 for my trip to Romania and Bulgaria this summer. I spent 2 weeks in a town 5 hours northwest of Bucharest and tons of town around Transylvania and a week down by the black sea in Bulgaria and my S5 was working perfectly on vodafone, never had an issue at all. Im domestically sim unlocked, but that shouldnt matter as the SSU apk should get you internationally unlocked and ready for use abroad. That being said, none of the international ROMs would give you an unlock for international or domestic use.

I think you read the question wrong (perfectly fine, i didnt really word it very well on my part). What i was asking is if there could be a universal patch to make the Sprint LTE and Messaging and all that good stuff work on an international rom. I think it is possible as there is currently something that is exactly that, except for Verizon (the G900V variant).

Oh, my bad. Well, sprint lte isn't going to work overseas. To get lte, you'll need to do quite a bit of finagling with an nv calculator, qpst and qxdm. You'll first need to fine out what bands the carrier you'll be using utilizes, get the nv figures that they run on and make some changes to the modem you have installed on your phone. That involves getting into the diagnostic port of the device and, well, there's a whole thread devoted to exactly that. Anyways, hspa+ will work without too much effort, and hspa+ is pretty dang snappy. Messaging will work right out of the box after registering on the GSM network(+1 to gsm ) MMS and data will work also once you've entered the correct APN settings. If you REALLY need lte, then you're relegated to some tweaking, but if you can live with 5 to 7 Mbps(which is all a phone really needs, unless you're tethering for a laptop or several tablets or something like that), then just do the hspa+ thing. I was happily able to tool along quite well on that streaming YouTube, Netflix, Google map navigating, etc etc without issue. The reason there isn't a universal fix is because it would take quite some doing to maintain an app to have all those apns and so forth, but that being said, the idoneapps apk does do that for the available gsm carriers in the states. I didn't use it abroad, but might be worthwhile to ask in their forums. The admin of that site "nodial" is an Android genius! Their app costs $35, and it won't add the lte bands, but if the lack of hassle is worth it to you, it couldn't hurt to ask him. He's on XDA also with the same nick. @Nodial, does your app do the APN fix abroad too?
