There are apps in the play store that offer to unlock your phone so it can be used on any network
Sent from my HTCONE using xda app-developers app

why not just root your phone???

Rooting a phone makes it capable to use on any cell provider
Sent from my HTCONE using xda app-developers app

so you know it but you want to use a fake app and get a virus or keylogger why?

That was my question, if anyone had an experience with these apps
Sent from my HTCONE using xda app-developers app

Rooting doesn't make your phone sim-unlocked. Rooting is basically having admin rights to the system partition on your phone. The OS (android) is located on the system partition.
The only apps I know that sim unlocks phones are usually one for Samsung's and I don't think any of them work 100% of the time.

I always feel they are virussy type things

Let me tell you, ROOTING a phone will just get sudo rights working for you, nothing else such as unlocking. Also apps wont unlock your phone either as it is usually stored in a partition that has tons of code. Those apps WILL not work. None of them will.

I'm not talking about rooting a phone. I'm talking about the apps that claim that they can provide the codes to unlock any device so that they can be used on other networks. Now if rooting a device means that you can take your phone to any of the cell carriers that's new to me. Go ahead look then up on the play store

Change imei back to tmobile

Okay. So I bought an unlocked g2x brand new from Amazon. Everything almost works as it should: calling, wifi, texting ....the thing is I cannot send or receive picture messaging.
I spent hours on the phone with T-Mobile (ironically bought an unlocked phone that was originally T-Mobile to use on T-Mobile network. Funny right?) and they say because the imei number is unlocked I am unable to do picture messaging without a data plan. I can't afford a data plan right now.
Anyways I'm hoping there is a way to change the imei number back to being T-Mobile specific. In other words: I want to lock my unlocked phone back to T-Mobile.
All I want is picture messaging. I shouldn't have to have a data plan to achieve this. Can anyone please help?

It shouldn't be your imei, it's your apn settings. Go to settings, wireless, network settings and make sure your apn is set for tmobile.
My phone is unlocked and I send pictures without a data plan. Just remember that you need to have mobile data enabled. It uses data technically, but it's incorporated with your texting plan.

You sir are a genius. That actually fixed my problem.
Now, I have data blocked on my phone so I shouldn't be able to use the data thing even if I tried. ...
I did activate that setting and upon successfully sending a text, the 4g logo does come up where my signal strength and battery are shown. Can you confirm this to be normal? I don't want any extra charges on my next bill....

Call them and make sure there's a data block on your phone. You won't get charged. And yes the 4G logo will show when sending an mms.

And hopefully this time you get someone who actually gives you accurate info

I spoke with the T Mobile representative. I believe her exact words were : Now you're not supposed to have multimedia messaging on an unlocked phone, But it's changing that setting give you the ability to do so then that is great.
Haha. But yeah she basically is telling me what you guys Are telling me I cannot thank you enough.

I can send mms. But I can't receive them.....any ideas?
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda app-developers app
Data turned on when downloading it? Edit your APN, make sure the APN is set to etc.tmobile.com, mmsc set to mms.msg.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc, mac set to 310, mnc set to 260

Did you mean to put "Epc.tmobile. " on access point names?
Would I be asking to much for a little help navigating to those particular settings?
Thanks redmonke.
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda app-developers app
Ok after rereading, I see you said to edit my apn, which I assume is short for access point names. Should I edit the only one that is there which is "T-Mobile us, Epc.tmobile. com "
Or should I create a new one?
This is of course assuming that apn is access point names.
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda app-developers app
I did what you suggested, although I had to Create a new apn rather than edit the original because the original will not let me edit it....
After creating the new one, I suspect maybe a miss type in the settings. "Etc " is what I believe you said, but upon using that setting I could no longer send pics.
Once I changed it to "epc " I was able to do so.....
Anyways after creating the new apn as per your suggestion, I noticed that it was an exact mirror of my original apn.
But here's the kicker:
I was able to receive pics so long as my buddy selected to forward it rather than sending it directly (if that makes any sense) .
I then tried to have him compose a fresh message and select a pic to send....to no avail. I also had another friend attempt to do the same only to achieve the same results.
I am having zero issues sending pics.
And so long as data is enabled, I am able to do so.
Its the receiving pics that is giving me the issues.
I don't understand why I can receive forwarded pics....
If anyone can help I suppose I can send my cell number,(with great apprehension) ,via pm to someone who is willing to trouble shoot....
LG g2x p999
Android 2.3
Purchased new and unlocked from Amazon.
Also, not trying to open a can of worms ; but if I install a newer version of android would that rectify the situation I am having?
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda app-developers app
Go to settings and about phone. What os version are you on?
Sorry for taking so long to respond I've been busy with school.

I assume you mean android version: 2.3.4
Kernel :2.6.32.8
Build # grj 22
Thanks for sticking with me bud.

Hm so it looks like you are on the latest version. Did you do a factory reset when you got it?
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda app-developers app
No I didn't...would that somehow lock my phone to a specific carrier?
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda app-developers app
No but something might be messing up the mms.

Do you think if I installed a newer version of android I would be able to send and receive texts???
Or if I root it?
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda app-developers app
Root no, if a factory restore doesn't then I'd wipe data and install cyanogenmod and see if it works.

Does anyone know,.?

Does anyone know how to make an application that will not allow Facebook to be installed? I might be interested in purchasing an application like this or making 1

If you don't want a particular app then don't install it. There's probably no way to block installation of a given app.

What he said. Is there a particular reason you want to block the installation of Facebook?
Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda premium
Though if you had a vendetta (and a rooted phone), you could always just put a Facebook catch-all into your hosts file to black-hole attempts to reach them. Wouldn't stop the app, would stop it from ever actually working and any website connecting there.
I think you would need to sign up for a MDM service. There a few of them out there and they should be able to either block apps from being installed or automatically uninstall it if it gets installed.

Haha sorry I was just kidding but also wondering. Yeah I know how to install apps or not. I was thinking of an app that you can download and then when you did want to download facebook it wouldn't let you. Its really just a joke brotherhood. I don't have a Facebook problem but I see one developing lol.

Imei blocked question

Hi guys. Im not asking how to unblock a phone or change imei or anything. I was just wondering.... If your imei number gets blacklisted does the phone become inoperable or can you still play games on it. This question is purely out of curiosity. I just like to know stuff
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
You can still play games and even use Wi-Fi for internet access, just can't connect to the mobile network
Ah ok. You would think they would be able to pretty much disable it.

Found a way to move app data to sd card..

Doesn't work for need for speed mw. I'm guessing it will work on small apps or games that don't need additional files. Hopefully will save me a bit of space until I have an easy option for rooting.

You will also have to start from scratch if you want to update the app in the market. Google only wants app content in the internal storage to avoid customer complaints due to swapping cards or using bad cards and wondering why the app vanished or does not work. It was also due to security. Not my words, but the Android team at their dev forums.

Why does an application like this require all these permissions?

I'm just curious because I don't see why a flash light needs all this access.

Usually they collect information about your device and submit it to their servers. Better not to install it, or install XPrivacy to deny the permissions. But it's nothing compared to Facebook's permissions. http://imgur.com/JGFhiW3
Allows application to take pictures and videos without your knowledge. That is by far the most ****ed up thing I've seen thus far today.

No, there are other flash light apps, which don't require all these permisions.
