All you have to do is go into the S Voice app, go to settings, and uncheck "Open via the home key".
Try it yourself, the before and after. Simply open the app drawer and press the home button. You will see a speed increase after disabling the S-voice shortcut.
Also another way to increase speed is going into developer options in settings and turning off Window animation scale, transitions animation scale and animator duration scale.
Why are you so smart?

I didn't really even notice that much of a problem with the reactive speed of the home button...
Did what you did, and damn, did that make a significant difference. A GOOD significant difference too
or just disable S-voice totally and see a HUGE improvement all around.
That's new..tried it and it did go faster. Thanks ha

Make sure you set up your jump shortcuts! They are awesome to have
Something I missed at first: There is a small arrow on the right side of the universal composer in the notification panel (where you'd update your twitter/fb) -- if you click the arrw, you'll get toggles for wifi, bluetooth, gps, silent, and auto rotation.

Thats what I am saying, I dont have anything assigned to it, so it doesn't do anything. You made it sound like it was going to do something hidden!
Since you don't get my humor, and obvioulsy haven't tried it yourself, I'll spell it out for you... there is NO JUMP + R. They forgot the 'R' in the jump menu list. I guess you can say it IS hidden.

LMAO, sorry. Too much vodka? Too little sleep? I'm just like "seriously it wont do anything until I actually assign it, geez!"
But you're right - how weird. I wonder if they did that intentionally?!
Hope I'm not ruining a joke or anything, but when I hit Jump + R, my phone reboots. And I definitely didn't set it up to do that.
More specifically, it vibrates, then does 2 quick vibrations after a moment, and then after a few more seconds reboots.
I have a similar problem but mines not with JUMP +R it just randomly does the vibrate and reboot thing.
Haven't set jump keys yet. But just found the toggle switches on the notification bar. Haven't found ay other "hidden" features yet.

most annoying thing on this phone... This thing is perfect otherwise, it really kills the speed of the phone when widgets are redrawing all the time...
Not sure what is being referenced - my WeatherBug, Simple Calendar and Google Search widgets don't flicker or refresh when I switch back to the Home screen (or, to whichever screen I have widgets on).
- ooofest
This was the main reason that pushed me towards rooting and custom roming.
Couldnt handle the constant redrawing. i guess 2GB of ram wasnt enough
Dont thank/like/rep my posts or ill report you.
I do not run the TW launcher but did you guys try disabling the the double tap home button to open up s-voice. I think this is on by default and I think I remember reading a while ago that this caused lag going back to the launcher. Maybe worth a shot to see if it helps.
Without the ability to re-size all widgets in the TW launcher it is kind of a useless launcher to me. I use Apex and the ability to theme the dockbars and everything make it even better then Nova for me.
I dont have this issue like this. As Eman said open s voice and goto settings and uncheck "open via the home key". When you hit the home key it waits a tad for you to hit it again to activate svoice.
Also goto settings developer options and change the animations from 1.0 to 0.5 or off. I run them on off, gets rid of lag.
I had this issue when I turned off animation and transition, when I turned them back on they don't do it anymore.
Also the dev option "do not keep background activities" will cause this too. If you are using Power Saving, the "screen power saving" option lowers the refresh rate of the screen, Disable it if your using powersaver.
My 2 cents.

I run those exact settings but still get the redraw after exiting some apps...
With animations on 0.5 the redraw is there. With animations off it works well. Any idea how to accomplish this without turning animations off?
Never mind it still does it even with animations off.
I think people don't understand that isn't lag going into the home screen. The problem is that once we are on the home screen, the widgets basically reload themselves and we have to wait for that

Yeah, this is a confusing thread for me.
So, one or more people didn't know that there's a set delay to get back to the home screen when you click the Home button, because it's waiting for a potential double-click to start S-Voice - and, that the double-click feature can be disabled.
The main point seemed to be what you described: moving to a screen with widgets causes them to refresh their contents. I admittedly found this point odd because I have NEVER seen such symptoms on my Galaxy S III (unrooted, stock). Power saving is turned off on my phone and the only Developer option which has been changed is enablement of USB Debugging.
Is this happening for particular widgets, perhaps?

Same here... there are links all over Google about this. I was just hoping someone here figured out a fix...
Almost every time I hit the home button from within an app and it goes to my home screen. It has to completely redraw the touchwiz interface. I'm running 100% stock firmware.
I was curious if anyone else was experiencing this problem. I find it very annoying and i feel that since this phone has 2GB of ram it shouldn't be having a problem keeping the home screen loaded while in another app.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I'm confused on what exactly your asking. If course if you hit the home button it's going to go to your home screen. If you're talking about your recent apps, hold the home button then you have plenty of apps to choose from.

Op. For s voice, do you have it set to activate with a double tap of the home key? If you do then that is y get the redraw. S voice is waiting for a second tap to see if it need to activate or just go home. Turn that feature off and it will be snappier
Edit. OK. I see what u mean. Do u have forced 2d hardware acceleration enabled in the development setting?

I know exactly what you're talking about OP, I have the same issue for a while now, and coincidentally I did some research on this just yesterday and found a couple solutions you might be interested in trying:
Solution #1
Solution #2
Solution #3
Solution #4
I skimmed through the solutions and i didn't see the one i believed i helped a friend with. He has the same issue and he had power saving turned on. Once he disabled it, i want to say it was resolved along with other issues. Try this and maybe activate it again and try running one off at a time to see what one it is. Its been a few weeks at least since i talked with the person. Not sure if you have it on or off.
If none of these other solutions work...are you really tied to using the touchwiz launcher? I know launchers like nova and apex give you the option to force the launcher to remain in memory to prevent excessive redraws.
Personally, changing the double tap S memo option made everything a little faster for me.
Hey everybody.
I know there are 3rd party Active Displays around, but I was wonder if anyone with the know-how would be interested in trying to change the stock Active Display on the Moto X?
I think its great apart from the useless *lock* icon right below the clock if no notifications are present.
It'd be great if this could show the battery level instead of the lock.
I know GravityBox has a cool way of displaying it on the lock screen, but that doesn't apply to Active Display of course.
I would like for the useless lock icon to just not come on when there are no notifications. I just got the phone yesterday so give me one day to just test it with the native active notification app and then I'll test it out tomorrow. I'll start with the app AcDisplay then the next day goto Dynamic notifications.

I don't think the lock is useless. It saves you from having to hit the power button. I've had physical buttons wear out on me, so this is far from useless for me.

hi, i've had my moto-x about a month and this is one of the first things i tried to do, but i don't have much knowledge with editing apks. i was able to decompile the active display app and i found the layout for the main screen in res/layout/breathing.xml. there is actually already a battery indicator coded into the app but it only shows up when your power is low. i tried moving this to where the lock is to see what it did, but it just crashed the app.
actually what i would like to do is have the date displayed below the time and just have the lock removed unless there is a notification. i've unlocked it a bunch of times on accident while holding it in my hand.
//
by the way. the numerals for the time are actually images and not text, such as is used by beautiful widgets. so they're totally editable which is nice. the whole app is essentially a widget.

It is an app that you can configure to shoot notifications of your battery percentage level. Notifications that Active Notifications picks up on. That like is outdated. I have a thread here in the Theme and App forums that is kept up to date. When I am actually at my computer and not on my tablet, I can take some screenshots of the app and upload them to my thread.

Agree with the above poster. I got annoyed with it, so I disabled it and have flipboard running instead. You can use it's widget to perform much the same way if you want to, but I'd rather not waste a home screen
By the way, to disable it, long press on an empty area of a home screen, hit home screen settings and you can disable it in there.
