[Solved] Performance Issues (S4 Unrooted Stock JB) - HTC One S

I recently replaced my first HTC One S (S4 Black, broken) with a new one (S4 Grey). Both were/are running HTCs stock JB unrooted. However, on the new phone I've been having some severe performance issues lately.
The phone is very, very slow (at times), for example when I unlock it the screen might take several seconds to light up (the image is displayed, but no backlight), and the pin input keyboard is very, very unresponsive - some times I can input the entire pin code before the phone seems to register the input, other times a number or two is even skipped/not registered. Opening apps ad running games is also slower than it has been, animations lag frequently (opening/closing the notification drawer, for example), and text input is also laggy. Battery life is also noticeably worse than on my old phone.
My Antutu scores as of now fluctuate between 6700 and 7700, which seems extremely low for this device (shouldn't I be scoring ~10000+?). In fact, in a few tests it scores lower than my old Sensation (on my highest scoring run today, CPU Integer and RAM were both significantly lower than the Sensation, at 599 and 939 respectively (vs. 966 and 1411). On my lowest scoring runs I only scored about 500 points higher than the Sensation (even though it's heavily OCd, that's still crazy).
I tried running the Antutu Stability test, but that didn't tell me anything useful - the top graph fluctuates between ~54 and ~46, and the temperature never got higher than 34 degrees. According to Lookout Mobile Security, there's no malware or anything like that on the phone.
Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this? Do I really have to root the phone and install a custom ROM to make it perform as it should?

Okay, never mind, I figured it out - clearing cache and data for Google Maps of all things solved this (I'd tried killing the processes and services before, to no avail). Maps was running two processes and two services and consuming a horrible amount of memory and CPU resources. My last Antutu run scored 10800, so everything's back to normal. A lesson learned, I guess.

So after reading nearly 5 hours and spending my time in the wee hours of morning, I finally did all the "stable" mods for the phone... If you haven't been reading, make sure you guys check out the stuff in the development forum.
After all modifications, I was able to get 2701 points in quadrant benchmark. What mods did I do?

This stuff really does help out your phone folks. Bench it now with quadrant, then take a peak at the other stuff and make magic happen. If anyone needs any additional help setting up their captivate, I'm more than happy to help.
I agree those fixes help speed a lot. But the quadrant score is meaningless. the speed hack creates an io loopback. The loopback just tells quadrant what it wants to hear.
Does your BT work on the european ROM. For me all people hear is a gargeled mess on there end?

Quadrant is just benchmarking software that takes the cpu, gpu and memory read/write speeds into account. It runs a series of tests and spits a score number out at the end, so you can compare your device to others (like comparing boner sizes, but less gay).
It doesn't actually do anything to speed up the device though.

This is correct and to be honest there is way to much weight in the I/O tests. That is the only reason that the stock Droid X bests the Gal X. It has more weight than cpu and gpu so you can't put to much into those scores. They really don't mean anything more than bragging rights. What I am interested in is real world usage.
Real world use with the hack provides amazing speed gains opening and switching apps. Io heavy apps are very much improved while open too. It's finally as fast as the iphone.
Whats your battery life like after the overclock?
The score ended up getting lower and lower every time i used quadrant. 2701 is the highest I was able to get so far, but that's with a fresh install of the rom and all the stuff before I started loading on apps. Everytime I ran the benchmark, I of course killed the apps beforehand.
The battery life is the same- to be honest. This is me comparing a rooted stock ROM to the somewhat fresh install of the eclair i9000. The phone is very snappy. I came from an iPhone 4 and one of the biggest eye sores to me was the less-fluidness of changing programs, response to buttons (homescreen-back button) and pinch to zoom. After all these changes, it's a whole different story. Browsing is very appealing, especially since pinch to zoom isn't jagged or slow. The smoothness of this functionality is on par to an iPhone. And there is no waiting when I press the home button or back button.
True, maybe these numbers aren't considerably accurate (as far as the lag fix and EXT2) but at least it shows raw computing capability in it's current state... meaning, the usage of a virtual EXT2. Never the less, the phone is still all around faster, even if it isn't exactly the proper way of going about it.
The only problem I've seen so far is that it likes to randomly shut off. Won't respond to anything unless if I soft reset it. I haven't really found what causes it, since the consistency of it happening goes about in a non set pattern.
I didn't see any real world increase .. so I reverted back in about 4 hours.... I'd rather have the memory than a number that don't transfer to real world speeds...

bam_dmux_wavelock/spotify

Currently running CM10.0 (stable) on my One XL. When checking wakelocks after flashing, a process named "bam_dmux_wavelock" appeared to be running for hours at a time. After some poking, I also discovered that Spotify running in the background only consumed 700mb of data over 3 days. After disabling background data for Spotify, the wakelock (and battery drain) reduced dramatically. Disabling background data across the device reduced that wakelock to almost zero.
Currently getting 2 days of use on CM10 and 2-3 hours of screen time, with ondemand governor; 192 min; 920 (I think?) max. No lag or performance hit for day-to-day tasks.
Might have to do a cleanwipe and reinstall rom to get rid of the rest of the wakelocks.

HTC's version of multi-tasking that everyone loves to hate for no reason, gives you just that. Because many developers don't know how to properly code for battery life and data usage, someone has to do something about it or else we, the customers, are the ones who end up suffering. Android saves apps in their original state, so who cares if they are really running in the background or not? The experience is the exact same, you go back to an app, and it picks up right where you left off.
I have noticed spotify AND many many other apps taking cpu, wakelocks, and using data.. But it just doesn't happen in a sense rom because they get truly suspended in the background, and apps that really need to work in the background to be useful are in my experience , not affected.
TL;DR: Use a Sense Rom and worry less about battery and data.

Differences in battery life between two identical U11.

I have two U11 (I'm going to return one, or both) and I noticed significant differences in terms of battery life between them.
Running PCMark battery life test, auto-brightness OFF, brightness MAX, one phone consistently gets 4h53 of screen on time, and the other one 5h08 (from 100% to 20% battery). That's a 5% difference and it's not negligible. Phones are the same otherwise in terms of apps installed. Problem is, the phone that has the worst battery life starts apps a TINY bit faster...
So the bottom line is, phones have significant manufacturing differences.... and I don't know which one to return.
They have same firmware and all identical? are you sure? maybe some app is configurated different or something.. or one battery its more degraded

Hardware parts may be more or less efficient than each other. Radios on one device may be a few percent better. Honestly just send one back and get it done with. You also forget about coy CPU variances (no two chips are the same).
Different bin could be the reason there is a slight difference.

Well the geekbench and 3D mark are exactly the same (like give or take 0.1%).

Doesn't mean a battery benchmark is going to be within 0.1% the same as when you look at Youtubers who benchmark multiple of the same device and get somewhat different Antutu benchmark results.
5% is nothing to fuss over

It's like starting with a battery at 100% vs starting at a battery at 95%. For the rest of the life of the phone. Kind of a big deal.
Anyways, I'm running another test now with a low screen brightness, in case one screen was brighter than the other one (at max brightness) and drained more battery, I'll keep y'all posted.
Try with all radios (wi-fi, gsm, bluetooth, nfc, gps) off, even in location settings (disable scanning nearby devices for improved accuracy), and force stop all installed apps before the test. That gives me about 10 to 15 % increase on AnTuTu score. Maybe log cpu load and speed while testing as well.
I agree 5% is not a big deal, but would definitely keep the longer standing
Edit: force stopping because you may have installed the same apps, but most background processes won't load until you first time run their app, so one of the two "identical" devices may actually be running less apps in background. Best for testing would be to factory reset both devices and not load anything into them nor change any settings except the backlight for test.
How do you use both phones in the same manner to expect same result? You text same person with both phones making sure time taken to perform the task is same for both? And different phones have different usage pattern hence the 5% difference..??
Besides....that's 15mins. I definitely consider that as negligible. A 20% difference would be something to concern yourself about.

Lag

I know i made some negative posts on the htc u11 but tbh i love this phone and i was just feeling annoyed by some things.. But i wanted to ask, i expected this phone to be lag free and super fast, yes it is super fast abd smooth but the thing is that it does lag with me and it is noticable. Happens a couple of times a day i think, am i the only one having lag problems? I do have the power saving option on and idk if it's what's causing the phone to lag or not but all i know is it does lag with me and it is unexpected since this phone has htc sense and snapdragon 835. Share your thoughts below

I'll share my thoughts : you should really stop openning these threads because actually no one believes you, we're all aware that you're here to throw up on this phone.
For who ? We don't know.
Maybe a simple Samsung fanboy who's upset because HTC made a better phone than Samsung's flagships two years in a row ?
Now stop please, it's not funny and it will not prevent people to buy the U11 if they want to.

Turn off the power saver. It's not needed with the Snapdragon 835 and it alters the distribution of the load between the clusters. Things that would complete swiftly and thus conserve power on the big cores gets offloaded to the little cores. The kernel isn't optimized to take advantage of the efficiency of the 835. With it being incredibly easy to get 7 hours of SoT, there is no need for the power saver. Somewhere on XDA there's a very detailed explanation as to what the power saver does and why it shouldn't be used unless your phone is about to die but it curbs both clock speeds and shuffles around the load, preferring to not use the big cores at all. It basically abolishes the efficiency of the big.LITTLE premise and often has opposite the intended effect if you're actively using the phone.
If you need optimization, you can use Boost+ to set individual high drain apps up to be run in 1080p, limit background usage, etc. This is much more effective than essentially killing the performance of the phone and gaining little, if any, additional battery life. It can have the opposite effect and in fact did so on the 10.
Think of it like this - the little cluster may take half the power per cycle than the big cluster (I don't know the exact numbers and highly doubt it's anywhere near half but it works for the example). You open an app that would have completed in a single cycle on the big cluster. That same app can take four to five cycles on the little cluster. You've just thrown efficiency out the window.
If you have a lot of background apps misbehaving and a lot of apps constantly syncing, it can be advantageous but I haven't seen any evidence of that since the Snapdragon 820. The 805 in my Nexus 6 benefited from it but my Note 5 with the Exynos 7420 and my 10 with the Snapdragon 820 suffered.

I had freezes on my previous HTC(one m7), and the reason was some crappy game I installed. After removal - no lag at all. Just try and revise your applications and remove ones you have doubts
0 lag. None, Nada, zilch. Either the person who started this post has an app or setting that is causing it or they are intentionally trying to keep people from buying it...Which seems crazy...who would care that much...?

Put a big heatpipe in our tiny phones?

Hey everybody,
Since I work at a phone repair shop I have access to a lot of little parts and things to do modifications to phones.
Lately I've been thinking of taking a heatpipe from something, and slapping it into my Pixel 3 just to see what kind of difference it may or may not make.
I have a heatpipe from a Samsung S10 already pulled just waiting for install.
But I'm hoping some people can chime in with the temperatures that their stock pixel 3 devices generally reach, so that I can compare after the "mod".
Preferably three temperatures:
Idle
Load (Video)
Load (3d game)
And if your feeling generous a fourth temperature from using a CPU burn in app.
I'm currently using CPU monitor to check my temps, so using that would be prefered so that there are no different temps between apps.
And yes I realize this won't be a perfect test due to what apps everybody may have running in the background, but ballpark figures are better than none at all lol
For reference my temps stock:
Idle: 31°-33°
Load (Video): 35°-37°
Load (3D game): 36°-40°
Ok so the heatpipe has been installed since later in the afternoon yesterday.
The heatpipe has cooler Master thermal paste on either side to help heat transfer.
It sits directly under the motherboard, and runs underneath the battery.
Initially the temps were a little worse of course since the thermal paste had to "set"
But I now have some base figures.
At idle: 25°-31° (this large variance is likely due to background apps updating/running such as Facebook, messenger, email and ambient temperature however it mostly sits around 29°)
Load (Video): 29°-34°
Mostly used YouTube, but watched a movie on Netflix
I did have a 3 hour google duo video call with my favorite lady. After about an hour and a half the cpu hit 47° and stayed between 45°-47°
Fairly hot, but prior to this I've seen it hit 49° on a duo call so I'm not complaining.
Load (3D game):35°-37°
Obviously this one is subjective due to the game, and what settings it's on. Though temps didn't seem to change much.
One thing I have noticed from all this is that cpu monitor also tells you your battery temperature, and weirdly enough the battery has actually gone down in temp 2°-3° from where it would normally sit.
What I mean is that at stock the battery was usually 1°-2° celcius higher than the cpu temp. Where as after this mod it usually runs the opposite 1°-2° lower temp than the cpu.
