Hey guys
I recently got into the s3 (I know, I'm late to the game...)
I am using the latest elemental X from Nitro...and I love the ROM!
The one thing I noticed is that I can never get above 1 or 2 bars on 4g. Speedtests never go above 4 or 5 Mbps. However, My Bionic will do 25+ in same area.
Any suggestions where I should start investigating?
Thanks!
About the only thing I could suggest is to try another modem and rpm

How was your signal on stock ? ROMs don;t change the radio, so should be the same. Did you make any other changes?

Hmm, to be honest, it seemed ok...
Here is what I did when I got the phone...
I ODIN's back to stock 4.1.2, rooted and unlocked bootloader.
Went into clockwordmod...wiped etc, installed elemental X, and gapps.
Should I have done the OTA update 1st?
I just checked the baseband version..., it says "I535VRBLK3"
Could that be it?
Elemental is aosp right ? If it is then that's you're answer . try a touchwiz ROM and you'll see the bars falling off your screen . tyres ROMs have to do with your signal . touch wiz ril will always be superior to aosp's ril.

Your modem should be VRBMB1 , you are on an older modem/radio version
You should install the latest OEM verizon 4.1.2 full.
Then root and install the ROM you want.
The radio is the radio and custom ROMs shouldn't mess with your actual signal if you install via recovery, but GUI changes to the status bar may cause the display to be different.
Thanks....Thats exactly what I just did....
Stock ROM still giving lousy signal....speeds aren't that much better...
Ill try a touchwiz rom also...

And your modem version is? Data rates might get a little boost from some tweaked ROMs, but actual signal strength won;t, it simply doesn't because custom ROMs still run the stock modem and radio. And the stock ROM IS TW . when I run stock , I get 25+ mbs down in a 4g area, same as on Synergy custom, even when I have only 1 bar I get 10 mbs down

Hmm, forgive me, but which would be the modem version?
I put everything back to stock, rooted for now....
Thanks again my friend!
ive read that hte AOSP roms show less bars but get similar signla.
ive seen it in practice when with my mother.
check the signal strength on TW, then on AOSP and see if theyre equal. my moms stock S3 gets the same signal as my aosp phone does in our location.
Go here. Download the latest. It is an all in one. With the latest trust zone. It may alleviate your problems.
Or not.
I am running the PACMan ROM. And it shows less bars. Yes, it annoys the living daylights out of me. But, the speed is there when I use it and do speed tests. Any way, good luck.

I am typically a silent browser. However I need some assistance.
I currently have a t mobile Sensation and naturally s-off(Perm).
I am very familiar with flashing roms as I must have flash at least 20 roms with my N1.
If Sense is any different, regarding flashing then I'm having issues with my current speed.
All directions on downloading the latest rom and kernal have been followed, which prompted me to test my Dl/Ul speeds with speed test. I'm in a very good coverage area and on a stock rom I was averaging literally 8 dl/1.75 ul.-Mbps. No wifi.
On my modified rom I cannot get past 4 dl/0.75 mbps.
Now I understand we have a new set of oc that is built into the rom, however before I installed setcpu my speeds were not all the different.
Please advise what I am doing wrong.

i have to agree, it might be your radio..make sure it is the newest radio and check your tmobile apn settings. try internet2.voicestream.com

internet2.voicestream.com is NOT for 3G/HSPA/4G (whatever you want to call it). Must be epc.tmobile.com.

Fair enough, and appreciate the help. Now, this was a concern of mine prior to flashing as I did not even flash a new radio, as opposed to my N1 where I would go with the latest CM radio suggestion.
Where would I locate a radio as I still don't have rights to ask a Question in A&D, but interactions > date of registration.
you could try finding one in the custom rom topic you are using. Usually they will recommend which radio to go with the custom rom.
cheers!
Confirmed on the slower speeds, also using LeeDroid. My APN is epc.tmobile.com. Have flashed the latest radio..audio went back to shipping radio but problem persists.

thats why im still on stock rom s-off perm root. wants you start flashing custom roms thats when you lose everything your phone had from the start. its still in the early stage for custom roms for the sensation i will wait till around december before i flash thats enough time for devs to really work out the kinks. remember most off the roms here were maid before s-off so the devs really did not have a system to work on intill now

December wow lol. I'm running LeeDroid v1.1 w/ kernel v1.2 and it's already amazing. Everything works flawlessly and he got rid of the lag that was in the Stock TMo ROM. Plus Overclock'ed kernel w/ UV coming soon. ROM is super stable, fast as hell, and battery life is much better. To me it's a no brainier, nothing to lose.
Some of the Devs had S-OFF before we did, and most have been putting out ROMS long before the Sensation. No reason to wait til December but hey that's just my opinion!

I understand where you're coming from but the issue of people having problems isn't ever going to go away. That doesn't mean it's the ROMs/Devs fault. There are so many variables involved including a big one - the user.
Everything might work perfectly for one person, while there is a "bug" for another. Well that person may not have read the entire thread/wiped when supposed to/cleared data etc. All the things many of us who have been flashing a long time have learned to do by default before asking questions. I don't check all the other threads that often so I don't doubt you, but you never know until you try. You may flash now and have no problems. It's sorta like, if you don't want to "troubleshoot", why are you flashing ROMs to begin with?
Either way your answer of "this is why I haven't flashed a custom ROM" isn't helpful to the OP or any of us because we HAVE flashed custom ROMs
I'm toying with some build.prop settings as I did on my Nexus One and I'm seeing some improvement in speeds on LeeDroid.
I'll post more in a bit..

The problem has to do with the EURO base. After all my testing, this is why I am purely making TMOUS based roms.
XDA Member: Rsotbiemrptson - wrote to me, what discovered that all .RIL files and build prop from TMOUS had to be transferred to the EURO based rom for the speeds to match TMOUS HSPA+ speeds. Then repacked the zip, resigned and flashed.

Hmmm, interesting. Care to share? We could pass it on to LeeDroid for his ROM as well?
I think he is right
I believe the issue lies in not having the correct RIL, along with a few tweaks to the build.prop... Only thing is how do you extract the RIL from the stock ROM? I pulled the files I think go with it from \system\lib and \system\bin but I am kinda scared to flash this zip I made... haha
Oh just an FYI you can run getprop "gsm.version.ril-impl" on the Terminal Emulator and/or ADB shell the stock ROM is HTC-RIL 2.2.0159HMQ so I just need to learn how to pull the needed files and create a flashable zip that would install the correct RIL into a custom ROM... if someone far more experienced could tell me how... or if they just wanted to do it, have at!
Just ran a few Speed Test runs with the new LeeDroid ROM, and my TMOUS 4G speeds seem to be right where they should be for my signal strength here (at 2 bars, I'm getting about 4-5Mbps down, 2-3Mbps up).
I did do a Super Wipe before installing the ROM - could that have been a factor?
I'll try to do some more testing when I'm in a 4-bar signal area, just to be sure.

I am on AOKP build 34, and it seems like my data speeds are slow no matter what ROM i use. I can't break 3-4mbps. What is the best radio to use in Ohio? Anyone know?

Thanks in advance

Well, you have TMOUS... Here in Phoenix it would be GREAT to see 15mbps!! Perhaps your sgs2 just got better signals...
try flashing the latest one from this forum post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1202867
In addition to a different radio/RIL pair, you can also try either of the TMOUS customer radio add on components from the link near the top of the first post of the Sensation radio/RIL thread also considerately linked above by x_SCOS_x_ELITE.
3-4 mbps? That would be fantastic. I'm seeing .02-.2 mbps. Yeah, you read that correctly. As is 20 kbps. All while seeing the "4G" symbol on the phone. T-Mobile quotes "Fast" mobile internet speeds in my area.
For the OP, I'd definitely try updating your radio and ril to the latest listed in the quoted thread above. I did it today and it definitely helped my speeds.
For the poster above me, if that's all you're getting I'd try all of the above suggestions, that's SLOW

To be honest with you i dont know i PRESUME it will , i do know that LeeDroid tweaks have it included, my (Elegancia) does have it..
Well, I've been considering about rooting and using a custom ROM. That data speed increase may be the final reason to do it. Averaging 20 kbps is just really, really slow.
Yep most of the ICS custom roms have it, I used to average 1-3mbps, I am now at 7-9mbps in the same place testing
So I've noticed my phone's radio works best with stock roms. I was using CM10 until I noticed I kept having terrible signal and data drop. I miss CM lol. Does anyone know of a rom that is stock with the mods/customization as CM?

Your problem is not the radio itself... it is actually the radio interface layer thats causing the issue. Since kernel source is not available for jellybean yet, all aosp roms have a hacked ril and data drops is the result. I think cyanogen has it tweaked pretty good but some folks still have problems with data.

hey guys! first timer here. I just installed EB ICS 4.0.4 Build 5. Everything is great but it seems that my data speed is far slower than before on the stock 2.3.4. I have a 727r and I want to use it on wind, and have no idea what combo of rom / kernal / modem to use. what I do know:
The 727r radio has the ability to pick up the signal
The wind network uses HSPA+ - transmit on 1700, receive on 2100
There are modem files out there for these frequencies
Things I don't know
How to make sure a rom / kernel / radio will work with each other (hopefully without needing to spend hours flashing n! combinations)
How to figure out if a modem file will support my device, or the frequencies I need
Things I've tried
the 989 from Tmobile runs on HSPA+, so I tried installing a tmobo rom, kernel, and radio with little success.
Trying to install / flash different rom - kernel - modem combos (most of which results in baseband version:unknown - this means the modem and rom are incompatible right?)
What I'm asking
Is there anyone running a 727r on wind that wouldn't mind sharing their rom / kernel / modem combo?
Has anyone found a Cyanogen-kernel-modem combo that works?
I am NOT asking which is the "best". After spending 4 hours of flashing and praying things will work, I don't care if I get the "worst" rom. I just want a combo that works
WORKING(more or less) COMBOS:
R34P3ReX_T989_Skyrocket_Conversion - Juggernaut_50_0218 - Tmo_SGH-T989_KID_radio
Gingerbread base, gyroscope tilts screen wrong way, a bit buggy, but works
CM10, CM10, T989UVLH1
Works well enough, having Call issues though. Going to try a new radio
Cyanogen always gets terrible battery. Going to look for an optimized version but not a problem for me
CM10, Blaze 4G UVLH5
Calling worked, I could hear caller, but they heard a lot of garbled blarky. Not good
u don't need a specific ROM or kernel at all, all u need to do is try different t radios. try the uvle1 from the t989 aka Hercules subsection, and give the modem someone dumped from the i757m bell version to see if u can catch a signal. I strongly believe the later will work

So.. im using the Tmo Radio.. the latests and you can get it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1895400
and as for the ROM i am using Cyanogenmod 10.0 but the T989 version.
works good.. dont forget to wipe everything.. as for the other comment where you just need to flash the radio.. dunno.. i tried that a couple of times and it didnt work.. however.. im about to try it again.. so ill let you know how it goes.. for now though.. just to get it working.. i would do the above..
tip: i initially flashed the UVLH1 radio.. worked great.. great signal.. then i updated the other day to the latest.. and it seems as though my signal is not as strong.. dunno.. but try it out.. you never know..
also.. on initial boot up.. you need to give it a couple of minutes for things to settle.. it should pick up the Wind signal by itself... if it doesnt after 5 mins.. then do a search.. but you shouldnt have a problem..
So.. i can confirm that you CAN install the TMO radio and the ATT Skyrocket CM 10 ROM!!!!!
Infact... it works great!!!
TIP: i can also confirm that the UVLH1 has a stronger signal than the UVLI4 radio which is the latest. not sure why.. but i reverted back to UVLH1
hope this helps!

Right now I am running PACman Rom (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2178402) with the Blaze LB7 radio (4th from the bottom here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1895400). They said I shouldn't be able to run an ICS radio with a JB Rom, but somehow it seems to be working. Note that the radio was on there before flashing PACman.
The kernel showing up in my phone info is the one that came with the PACman Rom, 3.0.72-cyanogenmod. I know this because before flashing PACman over stock, the kernel was 3.0.8.
Having said all that I'm thinking about updating my radio, probably to UVMB1. I'm not sure if I should bother though. I have a Nexus S, which is designed as an AWS phone out of the factory, and when I put my SIM card in that phone, the speedtest results are the same as what I'm getting right now with the LB7 radio on the Skyrocket. So I'm not sure I'd gain much by updating. :/
Can some people in the GTA please chime in to help me.
I am using a Rogers Skyrocket.
SlimBean Rom 4.2.2 Official 7
T989UVMC6 radio/modem
I tried a few other modems and found this one to be the most stable as some did not even allow a call to be made.
This is what I noticed.
Full charge I talked for 20 minutes and lost 10% battery (from full charge)
I get erratic data speeds inside=500-1 and outside I get 3
The problem is the battery drain and signal strength.
What are you using and what is your battery life and signal strength?
Data speeds?
your location?

My carrier is videotron, one of the most difficult carriers to get unlocked phones to work on. Here's what works for me, sim unlocked, rooted. Running cyanogenmod 10.1.0 RC2 with Blaze 4G LF4 radio, nobars battery saver and network booster. I'm still have the same issue as everyone else, baseband unknown and network type unknown. I've been running the stock kernel and I've been running like this for the past couple days, and touch wood, I haven't had any issues. I've tried the 2 Tmo radios, I got no signal what-so-ever, the telus radio kept dropping my connection, meaning, I would have to try and resend text messages several times before it would actually send. Now that I'm using my current setup, as described at the beginning of my post, no problems to date.
I hope my input helps out.

Ur input doesn't really help... 10.1 REQUIRES ucmc1 or ruxau7 , neither of which ur using. Try one of those radios and then post results
Edited: UVMB1 as well

Well, if it NEEDS ucmc1 or ruxau7, why have I been running this setup for the past month with no issues!?

You will, or already have had issues you're not aware of.

Edited, UVMB1, the NEW Blaze 4G radio from this thread seems to work as well:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1895400
But like x said, u had issues u just weren't aware of them. Problems don't just APPEAR for no reason.
this threads getting confusing.
ucmc1 and uxuma7 is for rogers and att users on cm10.1
if using unlocked skyrocket for other carriers then you would need compatible jb radio for the new/unlocked carrier for cm10.1 based roms
so for tmo/wind etc you would need UVMB1 for the AWS bands, there are other jb radios for telus, bell but don't know if/how well they work on said carrier.
so if your carrier uses the same frequency's as tmo then UVMB1 seems to be what users are reporting success with.
if your carrier is using same frequency as att/rogers then the ucmc1 or uxuma7 radio is what you need
correct me if im wrong
^^^ this is exactly what I said except in a more detailed explanation .
