Frequently Asked Questions - HTC EVO Shift 4G (Speedy) [5.26.13] - EVO Shift 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

[SIZE=+3]Frequently Asked Questions[/SIZE]
[SIZE=+2]HTC EVO Shift 4G[/SIZE]
[SIZE=+1]This a short list of frequently asked questions in this device forum and the answers often given as a response. It should serve as a starting point for gathering knowledge and finding solutions to many common problems. Please only post in this thread with feedback on how to improve this document. Do not post "Thank you" type responses. If you have additional questions or require more help, try to find an existing thread or create your own. Do not use this as a general help thread.[/SIZE]
[SIZE=+1]Q1: How do I root my phone....?[/SIZE]There are many simple ways to root the EVO Shift. Please refer to the ROOTing FAQ for more detail. It is located here.
[SIZE=+1]Q2: What does S-OFF/S-ON mean....?[/SIZE]On HTC devices, the manufacturers enables a security flag on the Nand memory. When you root your phone, you are only given access over the system, meaning that you can flash custom firmware. However, this NAND-lock prevents you from flashing unsigned images to restricted partitions including, but varying by HTC device, the boot partition (where the kernel and other information is stored), the recovery partition, the radio partition, and sometimes others. So due to this NAND-lock, fully rooting an HTC device typically includes gaining S-OFF on said device in order to have full control over the device, be able to update radios/modems as they come out, and other [usually] essentials.
[SIZE=+1]Q3: Why does my screen black out whenever I pull out my keyboard....?[/SIZE]Your flex cable is most likely shot. This is the part of the device that connects the keyboard to the screen. Common symptoms including crackling or crunching when sliding out the keyboard and blacking out of the screen when pulling out the keyboard. Replacement flex cables can be found on sites such as EBay or Amazon.
[SIZE=+1]Q4 What is a logcat and how do I get one....?[/SIZE]TODO
[SIZE=+1]Q5: What is fastboot/bootloader mode....?[/SIZE]
On some Android devices there is a "fastboot" mode by which custom firmware can be flashed after unlocking the device (root). The bootloader is a part of the boot sequence that provides access to fastboot and recovery mode, as well as the normal system. Note that using most fastboot commands requires a rooted/unlocked device.
[SIZE=+1]Q6: What is a recovery....?[/SIZE]
A recovery is an OS-like portion of the device that lives on its own partition. This specific design is a product of Android itself that allows updating of the device. When a custom recovery is installed, custom firmware packages (not released by the carrier/manufacturer) can be flashed to the device, as well as other packages. For more information,, please refer to ROOTing FAQ #2
[SIZE=+1]Q7: Where can I learn to dev....?[/SIZE]
There are MANY good places to get started. In my personal opinion, you should read through the entire xda-university site, as well as searching around on XDA and reading whatever catches your eye. I cannot stress enough how important reading and understanding is. Some other good places to look include the following, in no particular order:
[Lists]Guide Ride-From a Newbie to a Dev, Get all you need here
[ INFO ] Links to Get you Started Working with Android
Note that the above is by no means a complete or full list of resources.
[SIZE=+1]Q8: What is ADB and how do I use it....?[/SIZE]
ADB is a tool for interfacing with your Android device. It can be incredibly useful for debugging ROMs and fixing soft-bricks.
Please see this thread for everything ADB

Additional Info
:::: TIPS ::::
For JuopunutBear S-OFF, HTC Dev unlock method is recommended because the timing of the wire trick does not need to be 100% exact. The fact that the unlock token has been used will not be visible on the phone. This is what HTC uses to determine whether the bootloader has been unlocked. No matter which method you follow, the outcome is the same. If two identical phones were S-OFF each using one of these methods, you could not differentiate one from the other. (This is not a false claim; I have seen it myself.)
For problems with JuopunutBear refer here or join IRC Channel #juopunutbear on freenode. Note: The method without HTC Dev unlock is not supported by the channel, except for cases where the motherboard has been replaced. NO TOOL RELATED QUESTIONS ON THIS CHANNEL. (only questions related to JB & wire trick are entertained)
For problems with JuopunutBear S-OFF without bootloader unlock, refer here.
For JuopunutBear S-OFF (Hboot 1.2x) you may lose data on SD Card. You should backup or use a spare SD Card.
For JuopunutBear S-OFF using unlock bootloader method, you only need to unlock your bootloader using HTC Dev. Rooting is done within the tool (optional).
For Hboot ≤1.18 S Off, please ensure that you don't have custom recovery installed. If you do, refer this post for the solution.
For writing custom CID, please refer here for a list of valid CIDs based on provider/locations.
For general help, post in this thread or join IRC Channel #helpmenow on freenode. [I can be found here. If you see me there but I don't reply, you can take help from others.]

:::: FAQs ::::
Q. How safe is this? It's as safe as it can get without someone being physically present to ensure that you do everything right. If you follow the instructions, this is very safe.
Here is what makes it safe:
Ample, easy-to-follow instructions.
Dynamic checks to ensure previous steps completed properly & device is exactly as it needs to be.
MD5sum checking for downloaded files before flashing.
If anything fails, it is retried. If it fails constantly, then all changes are undone & error messages are shown.
Regular updates with new features.
Immediate bug fixes when reported.
Dedicated real-time support on IRC (#kgs1992 on Freenode network).
Q. Why did you make this?Of course, it was intended to be helpful to newbies to S-OFF & flash their phones and also serve as a good example for making a completly n00b-proof toolkit for anyone who wanted to make one.
Started off as wanting to learn something new. Helped me learn not only how to write batch scripts but by extension I learnt many more things & also more about the phone.
Q. Where can I find support? If you find yourself in need of help with using this, you can find real-time support on IRC (#kgs1992 on Freenode network). [Please note that as the single person maintaining this project, it is difficult to be online & answer questions 24/7. You might have to wait a while at times.]
Q. Will you make this for more devices in the future? If I get enough requests. Requests can be made using the feedback form on this page.
Q. Will you make this for a different platform (Linux/Mac)?If I have the time, I may. But this probably isn't going to happen.
Q. How can I help? You can leave your feedback, suggestions, comments, etc. here in this thread or use the feedback form on this page.

Unfortunately I will probably never get to use this tool, but none less thank you and keep up the work. But one complaint, this should have been posted in the Sensation Android Development forum.

Well, Revolutionary only supports devices with Hboot 1.18 or less.
Maybe if I modify this to make it work with other programs, it's possible.
EDIT: Yes, now works on Hboot 1.2x

Well, when I asked dexter, he was of the opinion that it should be placed in general.
And thank you
EDIT: Moved to Sensation Android Development
Added extra function to flash 4EXT Recovery v1.0.0.5 RC3 for S Off devices!
Good work. Once you finished adding stuff to it, we will request to move it to Dev.

Nice one buddy added thanks for U...Keep it up
Fixes
Hboot ≤1.18 S Off, removing custom recovery:
Tacoroot won't work with custom recovery. You need to flash the stock recovery.
Make sure that your bootloader is unlocked.
Download this rcovery.img
Put it into the tools folder. (If you get a overwrite warning, just replace the previous file)
Run menu.bat & select option 3 (always select no for method 2). (Method 1 will install any recovery named recovery.img)
Re-run menu.bat & select the appropriate options for S Off.
If it fails again, then perform a factory reset & try again.
If it fails again, It would be a good idea to run an RUU
I've previously S-OFF'd using revolutionary and rooted my Sensation 4G with clockworkmod but failed to get the SuperCID working.
but I've been exploring looking into flashing ARHD and that required both 4ext and SuperCID.
Would I just run this tool without using the S-OFF part and proceed to install 4ext, root, supercid, etc?

Yes, you can choose what you want to perform. So, run the Menu.bat once select the Install 4ext option.
Then run again & select SuperCID.
And then repeat, choose install firmware.
You will have to interact only with the PC, not with your phone.
Finally, the utility now supports devices with Hboot 1.27 using the temproot + JB method!
Please give it a try or look through the code and let me know if there is any bug (doubtful there is any)
This is a nice program, i like the automated supercid, im probably gonna give that a try...anyway to make an option to put the tmobile cid back (T-MOBO10)?

I'll have to look into that. Maybe you may find it in the coming versions.
This application does S-off in devices with Hboot 1:27 S-on?
How it works?
I find it very difficult to make S-off with the Hboot 1.27, using the method JuopunutBear..
Awaiting your response, to download and install.

If you read carefully, it uses the same method. Just more organized because everything is done from a single program including the temp root.

Also doesn't void your warranty since it doesn't use the HTC Dev method.

Ok, I'll have to make the process of touching the wire on the card? Mine is 1:27 Hboot Unlocked S-on, I got through the Htc dev.

you do know that JuopunutBears new method doesnt use htcdev unlock either?

Since you have already used HTC Dev to unlock, I recommend you don't use this utility because all you need to do is run the control bear and perform the wire trick.
And yes, the tool will employ the same methods as JuopunutBear (except HTC Dev Unlock) because that is the same application used in this tool.
EDIT: Now supports HTC Dev unlocked devices for SOff

[DICTIONARY] Android Terminology (AS SPECIFIC AS POSSIBLE ALREADY)

Hi guys, xda-developers have a whole lot of newbies at Android, and when they come across ROMs or something, they have terms that they don't understand, so I make a thread for them to understand the terms. Please delete this if there is one already, and please correct me if I'm wrong, also help me add more terms, you guys will get a thanks and a shoutout in the post. Here I use the term "device" for all Android phones and tablets.
General (incl. Linux, Android, etc) terms:
- Odexed: A ROM that all the system apks has an .odex file that contains stuff about the apk. It is used to save some storage in most of stocks.
- Deodexed: A ROM that all the system apks has their own stuff in their own apk, not reliabling on the .odex files to save storage.
- Wiping: Self-explanatory. Every time you flash a ROM you need to wipe away all the stuff of the old things, and bringing the modified stuff back to normal and then you can replace it (if not it will conflict and stucks)
- Xposed: A framework for modding without the hassle of editing any apks. Uses modules to mod. Kinda cool.
- Terminal: The Terminal of Linux. You can say it's like Windows' Command Prompt. You guys can reach the terminal shell within Android with Terminal Emulator (Play Store please, it's free), it still uses Linux's commands, it's also used by Complete Linux Installer to host a VNC server and run Linux distros on it, and you guys can also install BusyBox to extend the Android Terminal shell as the Android Terminal shell is not the same as Linux's, so BusyBox to the help! Unleash your inner geek!
- BusyBox: You guys gotta know this, right? It's a executable contains most Linux/Unix commands, ie. In your Wi-Fi router, there is a very small 3MB flash, and there are Linux/Unix commands in it. They uses BusyBox to narrow down the size as BusyBox is very small in size but contains most Linux/Unix commands. And we also can install single packages, instead of using the whole thing.
- Recovery: A "secret" menu thingy, reached by holding a combination. It's where you can do basic crap like factory resetting your phone, applying update.zip (OTA updates) (stock), in custom recoveries, you can do a lot more stuff.
- Flash: Writing an official Android firmware (kernel, system, baseband, etc. of stock files) to your device. We have ODIN for Samsung, Flashtool for Sony (that's all I know)
- ROM: The Android firmware in your device.
- Radio: The radio firmware, you need it to connect to Internet.
- Kernel: The core of every OS, and here, we're based on Linux. And if your bootloader is unlocked, you can replace it. Simple.
- Soft-brick a.k.a Bootloop: You got stuck in the logo or it keeps looping the boot sequence.
- Bootloader: What Android (and every OS) uses to make the core reads and loads the OS.
- Unlocked/Locked Bootloader: The state of the bootloader. Unlock the bootloader makes the Android kernel replaceable, and make the core reads it as a valid Android kernel. Locked bootloader only reads the stock kernel as valid to boot. Usually unlocking the bootloader voids your warranty.
- Root: The work to gain full control. You guys know Linux, it come with root, but on Android, Google disabled it, so we gotta enable it, and use an app like SuperSU to control and manages it. In the old days, rooting usually needs to unlock the bootloader, so you gonna void the warranty of the phone. But now, we can root with out unlocking the bootloader, which we can keep the warranty!
- Hard-brick: Basically, your device becomes a battery-powered paper holder. (And it CANNOT be saved unless: you buy a new phone or you go and change the mainboard)
Recovery-related terms:
- Stock Recovery: Just too bullcrap, only usable for stock OTA updates (apply update.zip) and factory resetting your devices.
- Custom Recovery: A customized recovery (self-explanatory) and it can do more than the stock recovery, like installing ROMs, flash stuff, etc. Two well-known custom recoveries are ClockworkMod and TeamWin Recovery Project. There are less-known variants of them like PhilZ, ClockworkMod Touch, due to their compatibility to less phones.
- ClockworkMod Recovery (CWM, or CWM Recovery for short): A custom recovery for Android devices. Not just factory resetting your devices, it can also clear cache, do crap in it and install custom ROMs
- TeamWin Recovery Project (TWRP or TWRP Recovery for short): Same as CWM but more user-friendly with touch controls, and also can flash more than one zip at once, and other stuff. But we have CWM Touch to compete with TWRP in the user-friendly-ness!
Sony-related terms:
- TA Partition: Trim Area Partition, where Sony's DRM keys for Sony's patented stuff to run. When you unlock your bootloader, the TA Partition will be erased. You will lose Sony's technologies like Bravia Engine,... if the TA Partition is erased.
HTC-related terms:
- S-ON and S-OFF: Basically, it's a extra protection layer staying under the bootloader. S-OFF means you can fully operates the device, like a simple unlock of the bootloader. But in HTC, to have full control, you have to S-OFF too, and I remember it also voids your warranty.
Samsung-related terms:
- Knox: Samsung's new protection like HTC's S-ON, it will become 0x1 ("Custom" state) if you flash a custom ROM. When it becomes 0x1, your warranty is voided.
- Flash counter: If you flash 1 custom ROM or a ROM with ODIN, it will becomes 1. And as soon as it becomes 1, you will trip Knox, and your warranty is voided. You can reset this with a Gingerbread ROM (official, everything included).
ROM-related terms:
- Stock ROMs: The Android firmware shipped with your phone, full of bloatware (in my opinion) and better be replaced with a custom one.
- Custom ROM: An Android firmware has been changed and modded by developers. Usually based on these three kernels:
+ Stock (Normal Kernel)
+ CyanogenMod (CyanogenMod kernel for modding)
+ AOKP (AOKP kernel I remember)
- AOSP: Android Open Source Project, the source code of Android released by Google Inc. and most major aftermarket ROMs based on it. (also stocks too, no AOSP, no Android)
- CyanogenMod: An aftermarket Android firmware, official releases based on AOSP, very customisable, very smooth and it's better than stock ROMs to use daily because of the smoothness of AOSP.
- AOKP: Android Open Kang Project, also an aftermarket Android firmware, has a lot of features (even more than CM) but the small bit of lag due to the features makes it not very comfortable to use daily.
- ParanoidAndroid: Again, another aftermarket firmware, like AOKP, has a lot of features and other crap. And it has a cool thing: Pie Control. Basically navbar in a pie chart thingy.
*ALL THOSE ROMS ABOVE ALL BASED ON CYANOGENMOD, EXCEPT FOR ITSELF, WHICH BASES ON AOSP*
CyanogenMod (CM for short)-related terms:
- Theme Engine: A theme engine of CM, presents since CM9 (I remember - Trebuchet is CM's own launcher since then so yeah) which applies custom themes, they themes from the icons to the status bar icons. Pretty freaking sick. I use stock in my Acro HD, and CM in my Arc S, and I miss that kind of modding the theme of my phone.
ParanoidAndroid (PA for short)-related terms:
- Pie Control: As explained above, a navbar in a pie chart thingy, which helps a lot I mean. I used PA once, and that is sick. PA ROMs are cool. They have CM's features and some of their stuff. Sick as crap. So cool. Just full awesome.
Debug-related terms:
- ADB: Android Debug Bridge, a debug tool for developers to "hook" themselves up to the device. It can do a basic Android device can do: install, uninstall, take a logcat of the device, etc. Some commands:
+ adb devices: list the devices (under the serial) connected and recognized.
+ adb logcat: take a logcat of your device in realtime, press Ctrl+C to stop.
+ adb install: install Android APKs to your phone, adb uninstall is vice-versa.
+ adb push: copy a file to your device.
+ adb pull: take a file from your device and copy it to your PC.
+ fastboot flash (image): flash a kernel to your device.
+ fastboot boot (image): boot an image (usually for a recovery) without flashing it onto your phone, for backing up a fully stock ROM with stock recovery (mostly).
Okay. It's the end of it for now. Please press thanks if it helped you, and please add me stuff if I missed anything, also correct me if I'm wrong. Thanks! I love Android, and I always will.
NOTE: NO APPLE FANBOYS HERE PLEASE! REMEMBER, I LOVE ANDROID, AND I ALWAYS WILL
NOTE 2: TERMINAL AND BUSYBOX ARE LINUX'S TERMS, NOT ANDROID'S BUT THEY ARE RELATED SO IT'S STILL BEING LISTED HERE AS IT'S STILL PART OF ANDROID ANYWAY
Sent and edited from my Acro HD and my Arc S via XDA Premium 4 app, and my PC through Chrome.

General:
- ROM: The Android firmware in your device.
- Radio: The radio firmware, you need it to connect to Internet.
- Soft-brick a.k.a Bootloop: You got stuck in the logo or it keeps looping the boot sequence.

I feel like something like this has to exist already. Granted I'm not on the lookout for it because these terms aren't foreign to me. Nevertheless, if something like this doesn't exist, I suppose it would be a good sticky to have somewhere on the forums so that people can have a quick glossary of jargon to access. I mean, yeah, people can just Google it too, but ya know... keeping people on the site is important n stuff.

[SIZE=+3]Frequently Asked Questions[/SIZE]
[SIZE=+2]LG G3
AT&T D850[/SIZE]
[SIZE=+1]This a short list of frequently asked questions in this device forum and the answers often given as a response. It should serve as a starting point for gathering knowledge and finding solutions to many common problems. Please only post in this thread with feedback on how to improve this document. Do not post "Thank you" type responses. If you have additional questions or require more help, try to find an existing thread or create your own. Do not use this as a general help thread.[/SIZE]
[SIZE=+1]Q1: How do I ask a question, so I'm not called a noob?[/SIZE]While you may see many questions asked in the Development section, PLEASE be aware this is not the place for questions.
Remember to use the search found at the top of the forum. There is also a search within each section. Example click on Q&A HERE. In the upper right you will now see two search's. At the top it says Search All Forums and a little further down you will see Search This Forum. Enter your search criteria in the Search This Forum to get info from this section. The search at the top will look through the entire forum.
Please read as much as you can prior to doing anything with your device.
Make sure your question has not been answered in the OP (Opening Post) of each section of Development
Search Q&A for threads that may have been started for a particular rom
[SIZE=+1]Q2: How do I update my stock firmware?[/SIZE]1) Turn on WiFi or data
2) Go to Menu > Settings > About Phone.
3) Select firmware update
[SIZE=+1]Q3: What is a ROM?[/SIZE]A rom is like a custom firmware image that is made by a Developer either entirely from scratch, or based off of the official firmware package. Some ROMs contain simple changes like changing icons and adding extra options to things, other more complicated ROMs can change the entire Android experience. Which one you will want to flash, will be entirely up to you. Read carefully, and make sure you understand what you are getting into before you flash.
[SIZE=+1]Q4: What is a Kernel?[/SIZE]A kernel is the heart of the device's OS. In simplest terms it’s a connection between your apps and your device’s hardware; i.e. the processor, RAM, etc. A custom kernel can dramatically change the way your device’s hardware performs… for the better and/or the worse]
[SIZE=+1]Q5: What is a Bootloader?[/SIZE]The bootloader is a program code that is executed before the device OS starts up, and that instructs that device to boot “normally”. The bootloader can come locked or unlocked from the manufacture. A unlocked bootloader will allow you to install custom ROMs & Kernels (as well as some other neat things) on your device.
[SIZE=+1]Q6: What does Root/Rooting mean?[/SIZE]Put simply, Rooting your device allows you, and/or rooted apps, to access parts of the Linux based Android software that is your OS, and that you would otherwise not be able to access. These tasks can be as simple and beneficial as backing up your system setting, or as complicated as installing custom ROMs, Kernels, etc.
[SIZE=+1]Q7: What is the purpose of rooting my device?[/SIZE]Please bear in mind, rooting can be dangerous and if done wrong "brick" your phone.
Rooting the phone is a decision made by individuals looking to improve upon the Android OS. There are many benefits, however it is done to customize the phone to it's full potential
[SIZE=+1]Q8: How do I root my LG G3? [/SIZE]Use one of the following methods, for KitKat or Lollipop.
Android version 4.x.x (KitKat)
[ROOT][IOroot] LG G3 4.4.2 Jailbreak
PurpleDrake-Lite!
[Root] Stump Root for LG Devices
Android version 5.x.x (Lollipop)
One click script
[ROM][STOCK][BUMP'd] LG D850 20F Lollipop 5.0.1 (+ extras)
[SIZE=+1]Q9: How do I remove root and return to factory stock. Why would I uninstall root?[/SIZE]The complete "Unroot" method, can be found here"
Removing root is normally a process used for a couple main reasons:
1) You've done something to the device and now it doesn't seem to be working.
2) You need to return the device or send it in for service.
[SIZE=+1]Q10: What is ADB (Android Debug Bridge) and what is it for?[/SIZE]Please read [GUIDE] ADB Workshop and Guide for everyone. There is much to learn, please view everything in the threads OP
[SIZE=+1]Q11: How to I enter Download Mode and Recovery?[/SIZE]1) You must switch off the device to start the process.
2) Press and hold the “Volume Up” and connect the USB cable from phone to PC.
3) Use the original USB cable. Other device USB cables may not be detected by the Computer. It is strongly recomended to use the original cable that came with the device.
4) Wait for the driver installation on PC.
5) You will now see the download mode screen on your phone.
6) Done
You can now do any process, such as, install stock ROM through your computer or laptop.
You can return to the normal mode by pressing and holding power button.
DO NOT UNPLUG THE DEVICE while the update process is running. This can damage your device!
[SIZE=+1]Q12: What is a "logcat" and how do I create one?[/SIZE]For setting up ADB see What is ADB (above) logcat allows us to log what the OS is doing, and possibly offer information if things are not working. its quite simple to create but may be difficult for most to understand. This is a tool a Developer may ask for in detecting issues your device may be encountering.
To use logcat
Code:
adb shell
logcat
To logcat to a certain file do
Code:
adb shell
logcat -d > /sdcard/whatevertexfileyoulike.txt
For a full explanation follow the link in What is ADB
[SIZE=+1]Q13: Is there an app that will help me create a logcat directly from my phone?[/SIZE]Yes, Apps for logcat can be found in Google play LINK Any one of these apps will work. It is recomended to use one with a good rating. YouTube also has step by step directions on how to use many logcat apps
[SIZE=+1]Q14: What does odexed and de-odexed mean and what is the difference between the two?[/SIZE]Please read HERE
[SIZE=+1]Q15: What is a Nandroid backup?[/SIZE]A Nandroid backup is a complete backup of your entire current operating system. It backs up the NAND flash, (this is the hard drive of your device). A Nandroid backup can mean the difference when you install a custom rom or when you play with the roots of your device, and something goes wrong.
[SIZE=+1]Q16: How do I make a Nandroid Backup?[/SIZE]In order to make a Nandroid backup, you must have a custom recovery installed.
From your phone, enter recovery mode and look for the ‘backup and restore’ click on backup and wait a few minutes until the process is done. It is best to save your Nandroid backups on the external SD card or on the PC to avoid erasing it by mistake. Performing a back up will NOT back up your external sd card and unless you choose to format your external sdcard, this will remain a safe place for this back up
[SIZE=+1]Q17: How do I restore a Nandroid Backup?[/SIZE]Enter recovery mode again and look for the ‘backup and restore’. Select restore and everything should go back to normal in a few minutes.
If you choose the ‘Advanced Restore’ option, you can select which component of the backup to restore – like the boot, system, data or cache.
Reboot system. Your system is now restored and is exactly same as the time when the backup was made.
[SIZE=+1]Q18: What is CWM Recovery (ClockWorkMod Recovery) and TWRP (TeamWin Recovery Project)?[/SIZE]They are recovery program's that allows you to backup / restore a full or partial system backup of your device. They also allow you to install flashable .zip files; which is one of the primary installation methods for custom ROMs. They also provides other features such as cache and delvik wiping, battery reset, and other processes. If you are thinking about flashing custom ROMs or just want a really good backup program, it's strongly advised that you to install one of these.
[SIZE=+1]Q19: Why does my battery drain so quick?[/SIZE]Please see HERE for possible steps that can help
[SIZE=+1]Q20: What is "Bloatware" (Bloated Software)?[/SIZE]Bloatware is all of the extra software applications that come pre-installed on your device (in addition to vanilla Android)–it can include any kind of application but some of the most notable examples are carrier apps and/or trial apps that you have to pay for after a certain time to keep using it. At best these apps can simply be taking up space on your phone, or at worst it can be running in the background without your knowledge and drain your battery
[SIZE=+1]Q21: How do I remove "Bloatware"?[/SIZE]Important: You will require root for the following process
Start by making a backup of all apps in your recovery.
Next read this tutorial, How to remove bloatware on AT&T LG G3
[SIZE=+1]Q22: How do I block "OTA" (Over The Air updates)?[/SIZE]Please follow these simple steps found here
[SIZE=+1]Q23: What is the best rom for my phone?[/SIZE]While you can ask this as many times as you wish, the only answer is: the one that works best for you! A rule of thumb is to visit a several rom thread's and view what is happening within these rom's. Eventually viewing a few roms will cause the urge to try one that looks good to you.
[SIZE=+1]Q24 What is the MD5, and what does it do?[/SIZE]It ensures that file's are downloaded correct and complete, in order to avoid issues when installing/using it.
[SIZE=+1]Q25 What does the term "Bump" mean?[/SIZE]

Coming from the nexus 5, these were some questions I had right away:
What does "Bumped" mean?
Can we root lollipop and if so, is it the same process? Do we still have to go back to kk to root?
Does anyone have the random dead spots in the digitizer where your touches aren't registered in certain spots for a while?
Great thread man

ANDROID TERMINOLOGYThanks to @benjamingwynn with his great quick DefinitionsADB - "Android Debug Bridge" a system that can be accessed using a computer where you can manage the device from. You need the Android SDK to use it.
AOSP - "Android open source project" a project by Google Inc. to give android to developers and manufactures for free.
APK - "Android Package" an Android application
Bloatware - Software or 'apps' that you don't need, but come preinstalled to a device's /system partition, meaning that you cannot remove them unless the device has been rooted. Usually, these are apps are sponsored by a company and included by a carrier for profit
CDMA/GSM - A type of network communication between phones and carriers. GSM phones normally are included with SIM Cards that authorize them onto the network. CDMA have this authorization built in and do not need a sim card.
Custom recovery - A modified version of stock recoveries that allow you to do more things in the recovery mode.
Cyanogenmod (CM) - A free open-source project based on the AOSP. It is a modded version of the Android firmware
Dalvik-Cache - Holds all of the pre-compiled .dex files created from installed apps. These files are static and do not change unless the app is updated.
Deodexed - Where ODEX files are moved into the actual applications modded) version of the Android firmware.
Developer - A man or woman who has created (developed) software.
Firmware - a piece of software to make hardware function correctly. This can refer to Radio Firmware, but is normally used as another name for ROM.
Governor - A system embedded into the kernel to automatically change the current working CPU frequency depending on the workload. It would only go up to what it is overclocked (or underclocked) to, this is called the maximum frequency. It would not drop below the minimum frequency.
KANG - The process of creating a code based of someone else's code.
Kernel - An important part of all operating systems that handles the CPU and other vital components. A modded kernel may be used for overclocking.
Logcat - A logging system built into the ADB
Mod - A modification to a part of the phones software. It is also POSSIBLE to mod the phones hardware but is not recommended.
OTA - "Over the air" a term used to indicate software that was sent to phones directly through the internet to their phones.
Open-source - (not to be confussed with free) A peice of software that is free to edit, use, distribute and share with no charge.
Overclock - To exceed the default maximum CPU speed. This could make a phone more powerful but may cause damage. Although no damaged has been reported so far it could still drain battery life.
Radio Firmware - A type of software that allows correct communication with the radio and the operating system. A newer firmware would normally improve battery life and call quality. The radio firmware only applies to the CDMA/GSM radio.
Radio - (not to be confused with Radio Firmware) A piece of hardware that allows communication. There are 3 main radios in your phone. Bluetooth, WiFi and GSM/CDMA.
ROM -
1. A modified version of the Android operating system operating system.
2. Read Only Memory, a place where information is stored and can not be destroyed, modified or written to.
Stock - An unchanged version of something. Example: I just flashed stock sense.
Underclock - To change your phones maximum frequency to LOWER than the default to attempt to extend the phones lifespan and battery.
WIP - "Work In Progress"
Zipalligned - An archive alignment tool that provides important optimization to Android application (.apk) files. The purpose is to ensure that all uncompressed data starts with a particular alignment relative to the start of the file. Specifically, it causes all uncompressed data within the .apk, such as images or raw files, to be aligned on 4-byte boundaries. This allows all portions to be accessed directly with mmap() even if they contain binary data with alignment restrictions. The benefit is a reduction in the amount of RAM consumed when running the application.
INTL - International
Odex - Files that are collections of parts of an application that are optimized before booting. Doing so speeds up the boot process, as it preloads part of an application.
Recovery Mode - A special environment that you can boot into for troubleshooting and upgrading purposes

I see all the files & mods are T-Mobile variant. Anything for AT&T?
Nevermind. As usual AT&T has locked the bootloader
@blue5055 if you are interested in unlocking your bootloader, you can try the tmobile tutorial one. I can tell you this, I do not think it is unlocked so it wont do anything. The reasons most of the mods are for tmobile is cause they require root...and since tmobile is the only one with root at the moment, the mods are labeled as such. If ATT acquire root than I will add. But if anything not labeled for tmobile it will work for you [which will be all non root at this point].
I am only collecting what is around the forum, sadly I am not the one making the mods and files.
Subscribed. Thanks.

And thank you @Kilokk
Just wanted to post a heads up, and maybe it can be added to the op, but flashing the xposed Uninstaller zip file will hard brick your device. It happened to mine and luckily I was able to get it replaced. But I was unable to even boot to fastboot or download mode.
I was just curious if there is a step by step on how to root this device. I'm coming back to an LG device so any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

POST#3 where it says "Tools, Recovery, Bootloader, Root" It's near the top of that portion of the guide... LOL it's the 3rd topic on that post. :silly:
root method
There isn't a link on the root section, just a link to the root developers profile. I actually need INSTRUCTIONS not needing to know who's responsible for initially rooting the device.

The link is for the TWRP thread. It will show you how to unlock bootloader, install custom recovery (TWRP) and then install SuperSU thereby giving you root... and this is for T-Mobile only at this time as far as i know
It's what I followed to get root
edit: there is a separate link (same post) for unlocking bootloader... that needs to be done first, then do the TWRP link to install recovery and SuperSU

There is a look towards rooting the tmobile v10, under where it states root. The confusion was I forgot to change TWRP to ROOT...it is there now.

OnePlus 8 (instantnoodle) - ROM Installer [Linux Only ATM]

instantnoodle-tools-cli-mainHey all!
I've started this project to allow people to use their devices longer, right now with a focus on the OnePlus 8, but eventually spreading to more devices. These scripts are currently for Linux Ubuntu/Debian distros only, but I plan on expanding support to other systems as well. Below is a link to all the files you will need to start using the scripts for beta testing on Linux machines. The only three ROMs available at the moment are Lineage OS 18.1 (with or without Google), ShapeShift OS v2.6, and Pixel Experience, but, again, more ROMs will be supported. I also plan to include troubleshooting support for frequent issues that can be fixed.

github.com
setup.sh - this script installs all of the tools and software for the next scripts to use for flashing. Please initiate this script first time and every week or so to keep tools up-to-date and fresh.
autotools.sh - This is the main script you will be executing. The rest will be executed from here. Do not execute any others manually to ensure you don't break anything.
rom-installer.sh - ROM chooser script. downloads the ROM of your choice and extracts the fastboot images from the payload.bin file. Do not execute from here.
In each ROM folder, there will be an info "readme" file. These files basically serve as a directory listing, allowing you to find the project page on XDA/GitHub/Website, look at any known bugs before you flash, and see any special install instructions. Please check these files regularly!
I will be focusing on perfecting the process on the command line on Ubuntu and Debian based distros first before I begin supporting more distros and operating systems. feel free to leave comments about the project below and begin porting your device into the project!
<---------- WARNING ---------->
// THIS IS STRICTLY IN ALPHA TESTING
// USE AT YOUR OWN RISK AND ALWAYS BACKUP YOUR DATA
<---------- WARNING ---------->
<---------- REQUIREMENTS ---------->
YOUR DEVICE MUST BE BOOTLOADER UNLOCKED
PUT THIS FOLDER IN ROOT (~) aka Home
PATIENCE - This project is still in the process of setting up and may produce errors. Feel free to contact me or anyone on XDA to help you with any issues or answer your questions.
BACKUP YOUR DATA - Backup all of your data even before you unlock your bootlaoder, because as soon as it is unlocked the device is wiped. Be prepared and you have been warned.
<-------------- RECOMMENDATIONS ------------>
I highly recommend you root your phone and leave Lineage Recovery or Pixel Experience Recovery on the device. This generally makes troubleshooting faster and easier. Plus, it allows you to backup your persist.img in the chances it does get corrupted. I will be adding a tool to backup and restore this image for you.
If enough support comes through, I will make a Telegram and Discord for this project specifically for support.
This is a really exciting concept and thank you very much for your efforts thus far.
UPDATE [2020-06-03]
- Added a new folder hierarchy to organize the mess a bit
- The entire project does not create anymore folders inside or outside of the branch
- Trying to leave a small footprint, so deletes all .img's, .bin's, and any other files immediately after usage.
- Updated README (and above)
- Brought support for ShapeShift OS (v2.6 Sceptile)
- Trying out an info file in each ROM folder to highlight features, issues, support, and information. Still working on gathering more information.
Hope everyone is doing well! If anyone has tried it out yet, even an older version, did it work for you and how was the overall process?
Can this be already used or not yet ?

Yep! Only works on Ubuntu based systems.
Download the folder, execute setup.sh (as sudo) and then execute autotools.sh (as sudo).
You're "average Linux user" (ik basically a meme at this point) will have no issue installing a ROM manually instead, and would most likely prefer the control and ease of mind of the manual way. Especially because they still need to download and get an understanding of ADB/Fastboot and its commands since that's necessary for unlocking the bootloader.
With that being said I'm glad you made this, looking forward to further development, and I'm downloading now to test and for S&G.
Yeah, that's true. I just wanted to get it going and working on Linux where I'm a bit more comfortable and then switch it to Windows once I have a Windows device. I definitely added a bootloader unlock, but that obviously only works for unlocked devices
Nice work!
Thanks for your time, effort and sharing.
Just updated the autotools project!
What's new?
-- Updated all the available custom ROMs and custom recoveries
-- Shorted a couple of scripts to reduce folder size
-- New backup_persist.sh script - self explanatory. Everytime you run this script, it erases the previous backup, so be careful about executing this one!
-- New restore_persist.sh script - self explanatory - Uses the last made backup of your persist.img!
If you want multiple backups of the persist, maybe for different versions of Android, you will need to go in and rename those files separately. To do this from the terminal, just type "mv persist.img new-name-of-file-here.img" or you can rename the file from your local file manager.
Just a reminder: this project is open source! Please port it to support your own device! I'll be finishing up the OnePlus 8 by this weekend and then working towards my Pixel 6 when it comes in by Christmas.
