Phone not staying in download mode and recovery - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Phone will go into download mode for a split second then reboot but not boot up. I would have to do a battery pull to get it booted all the way. Phone also will not go into recovery mode.

Is something wrong with your volume button? That sounds more like it's broken since you can't boot into either download or recovery.

It will go into download, just only stay for a second.

Do you have any issues with your volume buttons while using the rom? When did this start happening? Also, did you do anything that might cause this to happen?
When you hold volume up, home, and power to boot into recovery then release the power button once it vibrates, what happens?

Once it vibrates when i try to go into a recovery, the screen just go blank,

Volume buttons work well. It's just the power button that's a little wonky. Also phone turns on when battery is placed in.

power button maybe stuck down, making it turn off when in recovery and on when battery is installed.

I thought it might be stuck too but when phone is fully booted into rom, it doesn't go on and off like the buttin is stuck.

I'm running into the same problem. I actually took my phone apart and checked the power button, it is not physically stuck though. My power button doesn't work at all, but it still pushes in like it's supposed to. Very odd

Running the latest goodness build. I wanted to try a different rom to see if it was linked in any way, but obviously can't do that. Lol

I got it to stay in download mode 1 time. Unfortunately I needed the phone to download a stock VRBMB1 firmware. Hopefully i can get it to do it again.

I'm going to try it when I get home. Where you able to get into download and/or recovery mode without it rebooting itself?

I was for a day or two. Now I am back to where it constantly boot loops if I try. Any insight on the matter?

[Q] Can't make selections in recovery mode?

Hey guys, while trying to flash CM7, I forgot to wipe all data and my phone gets stuck on the booting screen. So when I try to get into recovery mode, it doesn't go to ClockWorkMod's Recovery, but the default one. The problem is that the power button does not work, so I cannot make any selections to wipe data or anything. Only the volume buttons work.
Please help, I'm a total noob and I just got this phone fixed after dropping it not too long ago!
It does work i freaked out on this as well. Go to your selection and hold the power button until it selects your selection
Its takes a few seconds holding the power button to register. Not sure if it's a bug or just the way it was built to prevent mis-selections

Thanks for the reply, but unfortunately holding it down isn't helping so far. I've held it for 60 seconds with no luck.
Then use odin to install a new rom is all i can say.

Does it say button disabled?
Try hard reboot volume up and power button. And of that don't work it's probably hardware related. Maybe a bad button

Odin is for samsung phones...... you have to use nvflash
Read this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1160364 which is five threads behind this one. The answer is in there on the second page.

Does anything happen when you press the power button?
Thanks guys, I was thinking I might have to do the nvflash method. The power button was working fine previously and it turns the phone on. Got to work then drink tonight but I'll let you know how it goes tomorrow. Happy New Year!
Thanks guys! The NVFlash method worked and my phone is back working again!

[Q] Can you break download mode? I think my Skyrocket is FUBAR :[

I flashed the stable CM10 and everything was ok.
Then I flashed 4.2 gapps and set some alarms.
Now the phone is in a boot loop so I try to return it to stock with Odin and when I get to download mode I click Vol Up to get in and I see Andy the Android for a split second before I get a sort of Blue Screen.
I'm wondering if I broke download mode somehow. Is there a fix for this?
I'm shoving the battery in, pressing the two volume keys, letting go when I see the download screen, hitting Vol Up to accept, then the phone reboots as Andy pops up.
Note: even when I don't accept download mode the screen will go blue and restart the phone.
Thanks in advance.

I would start with at least trying to get the phone to boot into Rom at minimum start with just pure mohans stock Rom and then work your way back try using the ucle2 leaked after going stock then see what happens what the ish out of that phone and see if that help
that what i would do in your shoes

Sounds like that might be the case make sure its not a stuck power button. Try using adb to push a recovery file to phone with cmd if all fails get a replacement

it could be the sticky power button issue, info on that in the ref sticky, if not the button, then hardware failure, u can try to remove battery for about ten mins then check to see if it is resolved

Yes. It had to be quick. If I do it slowly it starts the boot loop.
After talking to AT&T I'm getting a new battery. I really hope that's the problem, even though I don't think that's it.

If your phone starts to reboot you're doing something wrong. Download mode should last indefinitely. In fact you have to tell it to proceed to some other step. Re-read Vincom's instructions.
Edit : sounds to me that you are not holding down the volume buttons with the power button.

8. How To Put your device into Download Mode: (download mode is NOT the same as recovery mode)
a. Connect the USB cable to your PC, but NOT your device.
b. Remove the battery.
c. Reinsert the battery.
d. Press and keep down both Volume Up and Volume Down keys then insert the USB cable into your device. (On Rogers phones It's just Vol Down.) DO NOT RELEASE THE VOLUME BUTTONS UNTIL INSTRUCTED
e. When You see the screen warning you about installing a rom w/a yellow triangle RELEASE the volume key(s)
f. Now press and release the volume "up" key, you should now be at the Download Mode screen w/odin recognising your phone. -See Pics Below-.

It says not to touch the power button. Is the power button a part of this? In the video I didn't hold it.
As for the sticky power button, I really don't know. I clobbered it, I listened very carefully to it. The instructions to fix it were like "hit it hard and repeatedly" or something.
When do you think I should be hitting these buttons? before the vibrate, or after? Before the Samsung logo, or after? With power button, without?

Where would I put the rubbing alcohol? Would I need to take apart the chassis/case/housing? I imagine rubbing it on the power button wouldn't do anything.
BTW, sincerely, thanks for the help.
Edit: I bashed the phone, power button first, against the table while it was booting up and I saw my boot animation for a second. I thought it was fixed so I stopped bashing and it just rebooted again.
its 99% the power button, hearing it click is no indication thats its working as its an internal problem, theres 3 links to the problem in the "info" section in the "1 stop" sticky in my sig . taking it apart to get to the internal contact is one way to fix it, maybe the only way to fix it. if phone starts as soon as you put the battery in w/out touching any buttons then its a sticky/failed power button. warranty repair is also another solution
its 1% for a battery and/or battery contact problem

Okay that's nice to know... To enter download mode your phone has to be connected to your pc via usb cable, to enter download mode what you do Is hold the power button, volume up, and volume down button while the phone is off, once it powers on and you see the Samsung logo release the power button but continue holding the volume up, and volume down buttons this will put the device in download mode, have you ever used Odin before?

Power button issue

I am s-off and permanently rooted with cwm as my recovery. Not sure why but my power button is not working when I hold it down to shut down the phone. I will hold it down for more than 10 seconds and still will not be prompted with the power down menu. It will only end up locking the device. This didn't happen before so I'm not sure what is wrong. I am able to power it down with the quick boot app I have but that is my only option. Anyone have any ideas why this is?
