[Q] Off Subject but interesting.... - General Questions and Answers

I have used these forums to find all kinds of answers for my phones or tablets, but today I have something completely different. I already know that it isn't a tablet that "doesn't belong" or it isn't popular enough to hack, but I am only looking for people who can help me out. I have a LeapPad 1 Tablet and I wanted to know if this group of the best hackers around wants to take a stab at it. I am looking to run a flavor of linux on it and I know that there are other devices that use the SoC it has in it. So anyone up to the challenge.

[Q] Samsung Captivate

I am in the process of buying an Android phone. Samsung Captivate or HTC Desire Z. Any suggestions? I am new to Android and I am new xda.
I feel like I'm trapped in a time warp here that I just can't escape.
First, welcome to XDA.
Second, you obviously have access to the internet or you wouldn't be on here.
With that said, GOOGLE and YOUTUBE could provide you with more information that you can handle on these two phones. Google can give you specs, reviews, pictures and other things like prices and best places to buy. Youtube can provide you all of that same information is some cases along with a video review and actually being able to see the phones in action. Of course you can then compare the two phones based on the videos, specs and reviews and make a pretty good decision on which one is right for YOU.
I'm not really sure what else to say here dude. I mean, I could give you my opinion but at the end of the day what I have to say about the phones doesn't matter. YOU are going to be using the phone, not me. You know what you will use it for, where you will use it and what you want on it. Just research both phones (I dont mean ask people questions about it, get FACTS about the phones), opinions do not really matter most of the time when it comes to a PERSONAL device.
Or you can do like 80% of the people do these days and buy something just because "everyone else is doing it".

OMG This post is such a tease! This needs to be retitled and moved to a different forum.
And I hope that the N7 Ubuntu app moves our way. Dual booting might not be in our future, but I bet we get Ubuntu some way.

Moved to the correct board..

If you really are an IT student, you should have been told by now that a search function comes in really handy, and surprise, surprise, we have one on XDA. You could also have taken the pretty limited effort of browsing the forums and you would have stumbled upon several threads in which we commented more in-depth.
Considering you didn't make any effort at all besides typing this (in the wrong forum to boot), I can't be arsed to direct you to the threads themselves. Use the search function, and read the XDA forum policy -- it's actually one of the rules in here.
Have I already said you should use the search function?
And to be honest, not being able to do ALL your homework on a portable Android device shouldn't have come as a surprise. Do your homework next time before buying into an ecosystem and hardware.
People are expecting other people to take them by the hand more and more. I see less and less people able to fend for themselves, not only here, but in the real world, too.

[Q] Rooting/Flashing Chinese Android phones. ups downs do's dont's ?

Hi,
So I want to dump my WP7 phone (i will say no more) and go back to the tinkering world of Android. I am a budget minded shopper who likes the look of all those super cheap Android phones that float around. But going to one of these phones would of course be pointless if I am as stuck with the basic software as I am with WP7.
There are already a few threads on weather it is possible to root these phones, as the general answer seems to be either buy one that is confirmed to work with one of the universal tools... or buy and hope.
There is a thread on the ability to flash but I cant seem to open it, just loads forever, so I hope this isn't too much of a dupe.
Anyway, I am aware roms depend on memory, cpu type, and other internals, but can you match the important specs to the closest western equivalent and then use these roms or is the danger of bricking your phone just too great?
If there is a reasonable chance based on the above thinking, I am thinking along the lines of investing in a sub £100 phone and swallowing the brick i create if it doesn't work out. But if the chances are stupidly small then it is obviously best worth avoiding.
Just looking for some sensible advice on the matter really? Putting the potential quality issues of chinese phones aside for a second is it worth a shot?
Nothing on this?
q+a forum the right place for this?

Useless?

Can anything really be done on this phone? I like the WP8 OS but it seems just like some things are missing and what you see is what you get. There is nothing wrong with it, I just like messing around with some things.
Not every OS have the freedom like Android!
With Android it feels like a being the real owner of your phone, doing everything.....!!
iOS and WPs are just for surfing web, chatting with friends and for business.
Androids is for someone who wants to get most out of there phone.
I suggest you to sell your WP and buy an Android phone.
What are you trying to do? What's missing for you? I can do tons of stuff on my 8X. Elaborate a bit, maybe we can help

Phone Design Input — OS and Hardware

Hey guys, I'm not really sure where to post this, but I was looking for input from the developer community regarding the design of a new phone. I've been wanting to get started on this project for a while, and I think it's finally time to really make it happen.
Some background is that I've had a lot of different phones going back to the iPhone 3GS. After that, I've had a mix of phones from a few different companies (Apple, Samsung, Google, OnePlus, etc.), and I've always thought there were ways to improve things on both the hardware and software side of phone design (although it's a lot easier to point out these things than to actually implement them).
Now, I'm studying in China, and I'm looking into actually making a smartphone! I've been going to as many different stores as I can to look at/hold/play with lots of different phones and looking at what I like in each case vs what I think could be done better, and I thought it would be important to get community input as early as possible.
I know that I can't do this myself, and while I'm looking for people to help out formally, I'd like to run this project as a community effort as well. For the time being, I'd like to start two projects. The first would be actually getting a physical hardware design and the second would be designing what the OS would look like.
So what phones and features does everyone like? What are some must haves in a new phone and some absolute deal breakers? Are there any cool ROM's/Kernels/Features you'd like to see from a software point of view? I'm trying to figure out what package developers in specific would be looking for in a new phone. I can possibly release sketches and things as things progress, and I'd like to have the software be open source on every level (to the extent that this is legally possible).
Any comments/questions are welcome. If this is in the wrong forum section, I'd be more than happy to move it. Thanks!
