A Call for Help - General Questions and Answers

I'm reaching out in some genereal forums and I am looking for devs that are looking for a challenge. It's a little far off, and may involve buying a device that is discontinued from the mainline of phones and android. But over at the Sidekick 4G Forums we have a single dev that has been making us some cool roms, and another developer working on kernels. They're sticking by us and helping but we could use the help if anybody is interested. As of right now, our device is still on Froyo...
Basically what happened before I even knew that the Sidekick had such scarce development before I even came in with it, but all of the ungrateful kids that wanted their roms "now and the way they say" .... essentially just being jerks, kind of just pushed all devs out of interest with us.
I believe we need kernel devs... our current dev I believe is still working but is in a rough spot with his life - "bhundven" - so I thought I would post and see if there were any takers.
I don't have anything to offer other than the challenge and gratitude beyond your belief :3

What do u guys have for kernel?
One ROM @ a time....VIA ELECTRICITY

Guys, if you don't want to help him then just leave the thread. Thanks

Ill try to help if I had detail ...I'm to busy to be snooping in forums ..if I can help I can if not I'll let u know
One ROM @ a time....VIA ELECTRICITY

Right now we have a froyo kernel version 2.6.35.9
We have been trapped in this yogurt cup for a few years haha. I don't have all the technical info but the current flashable kernel is called Bali_SK4G_2.2 with voodoo lagfix.

Development Coming Soon? (AndroidSpin Posted My Article, Skilled Dev Willing to help)

I've been trying my hardest contacting many people to get development started with this phone. Since not many Experienced Devs would be looking the way of this phone i've been trying to reach out.
I Contacted AndroidSpin as well and they are very well known android news site (which i check everyday) and managed to get an article out about helping with development with our phone (awsome, thanks AndroidSpin!) See the Article Here
Hopefully in the Near future we will have a working recovery and ROMs/Mods/Themes Rolling out. A Very experienced Dev has Contacted me Back Saying he is Willing to Help but nothing is promised as he doesnt have a Sidekick 4G at hand. But he is willing to make a working recovery for us so lets see what happens .
He will Definitely need testers.. i will be one ofcourse hope others are interested in seeing development stir up over here aswell !
nice to hear about.....i have been checked this 4rum everyday to looking for a news but still......hopefully something will come out soon....:x im willing to be the tester for this as well.....
I just want to say thank you to all of you working on this. As a former Hiptop user and open-source enthusiast, I took issue with the closed platform that Danger had installed on it and ended up ditching it. When I heard the new Sidekicks would be running Android I jumped at the chance to have one, only to find out that development was lacking interest due to the stigma of the old Hiptops as phones for teenagers. It's wonderful to see more people getting interested in this and I hope to help as much as I can in the future. Thank everyone again and happy hacking to you all!
willing to help
I'm very interested in getting development going for this phone as well, I don't have the time or the skill set to cook roms myself but I am more than willing to test and give feedback. I know a lot of devs aren't interested since they spent last year with the galaxy s line of phones and there are new dual cores to play with, but I think this phone is really unique and could definitely have a big following because of the fact that it is soo different than the sea of slabs out there. I hope development picks up, there are plenty of custom roms out there already built for the galaxy s line that would only need to be tweaked to work with this device so hopefully that picks up soon.
I'm very interested in helping with development, came from the G1 and had fun with that. I was trying to figure out how to compile ClockworkMod but because Samsung uses initRamFS rather than a regular makefile, I was unable to figure it out. I'm very open to testing and trying to help as best I can with developing on this phone, feel free to e-mail me if anyone has any need to test anything, I'm always checking my e-mail. sduvick AT gmail.com. For those who understand the compiling of clockworkmod, I would suggest working from the Vibrant version, as the buttons are all mapped right, we just need to add the storage driver so that the sdcard can be mounted.
I would love to be a tester please keep me posted.

Suprah..."no cyanogen, rom manager still fake flashes the roms thats y for nvidia phones we have to use nvflash"
I am new to this whole scene, but gotta say that the Faux rom is tits....whatever happened, I hope it gets fixed soon.
I agree totally. Faux has personally helped me numerous times and his Kernel, Rom and overall knowledge of the G2X and android platform as a whole pushes him out the din and into the realm of Developer IMO. If he doesn't meet the requirements of being a Dev then very few of the supposed "devs" on here do, yet they still get the recognition. Even after his title was removed he's still working hard on his projects and still helping people.
I don't know what happened or why but it's wrong, Faux was wronged and I think a bit less of XDA for it. I'm sure I'm not the first or last to say this so whatever, just my 2 cents that wasn't asked for.
Seriously, what's up with this?
Any admins or mods care to chime in here with the reasoning behind this? This kind of stuff drives devs away, which you can already see happening.
Members go where devs go, come on xda!
I agree Faux is a very dedicated developer who has helped the community a lot and we should drum up support for him to be Recognized.
my thing is that faux is putting out kernels and roms for more than just this phone and the mods and admin guys and girl cannot recognize him shame on them.
yea he is a super nice guy idk what he could of done for that to happen hes to nice lol, faux is one of the best developers hands down, and yea i said it
I agree. Even though I'm new here, it didn't take me long to realize that Faux is one of the most, if not THE most valued developer for this phone. Most other rom developers include his kernals in their roms that they stamp their own names to...if that's not an endorsement, I don't know what is.
There is always two sides to a story. With that being said, im on his titles side.WE dont know what Faux may or my not have done but if the issue is out side of his work it shouldnt effect the title. Admited I maybe the newest guy on here but without Faux's work my G2x wouldn't.

Here's a screenshot of the updates.. This is still work in progress (for version 1.2.7 and beyond), once CyanogenMod has completed their license updates to their own releases, my ROM will also display all the appropriate licenses.
BTW, I am taking a break from android for a while, I am going to pick up my guitar lesson again. Android has taken up quite a bit of my free time and I want to get back to my practice (I really suck at playing guitar, but I still want to learn it).
So did CM feel as though Faux wasn't giving credit for their work???? I remember from day one that he always gave credit to CM for all the work that they put in.... I also remember he was forced to change the name of his rom because they were unhappy about it... Seems like they were angry that he was possibly using some of their framework, and were jealous that his rom was receiving way more attention then theirs, leading for them to complain about how he was not giving them the proper credit for work which is why he now has to incorporate these apache license things... Who knows that's just my opinion and if it is the case its BS because like I said before he always gave credit in his threads to the work CM team did... Hopefully Faux gets bored of playing the guitar and playing street fighter and comes back because GOD knows he is needed and wanted here and not just for the G2X but for the android community.
It looks like this under investigation by the mods at this moment and has been for the past few days. Not much more info than that was mentioned since it's between Faux and XDA.
Hopefully this gets settled quickly.
I hope it gets rectified quickly because Faux is the man!!!
Whats the point of this thread? Where is it that it was claimed that he was not a developer? Is it because of the apache licensing that you are all upset?
The only concern that I would have is how the updates are represented from version to version. Looking at the latest release, other than the kernel, none of the changes seem to be any different than that of nightly CM7 but are represented as different or as if written by him. I don't think its intentional and probably just needs to be clarified.
Seriously though, why you all got your panties in a bunch?
Either way, good luck faux... we look forward to seeing you back in the future...

How to get more device support?

Any ideas on how to get more dev support? And why everything has slowed down for the mytouch 4G slide recently? But shout out to those devs who have made roms for this device. thanks

You'll see more dev support when the source code gets released. Until then, they can't do any kernel development.

That's kind of it right there. That pesky thing called life keeps getting in the dang way of getting stuff done.
I know work for me has been ... overwhelming... lately, and I don't get much keyboard time right now.
My lady has a birthday coming this weekend, and I picked her up a brand new Nook Color. I'm spending the keyboard time I have this week configuring her surprise. I should be working on that instead of typing this, but I got a half-day today (thankfully) and have a few minutes to spare browsing through the MT4GS forums.
I hate doing graphics work, which is what i'm down to on the Nook Color for her. Installing cm7 and then configuring it the way I want her to have it doesn't take long, and the boot animation is already knocked out, so now it's down to icons and wallpapers.
The reason I hate graphics work is it just takes so long to get so little. Even having pictures of her and I, and tons of pictures of things based on the theme i'm putting together for the device, it still takes so long to stitch them together and/or edit as necessary. Photoshop is probably the most worthwhile software purchase i've ever made, without it ... it would be a long and frustrating road to do something I already don't like doing.
Col.Kernel is right though - as soon as we get kernel source from HTC you'll see this place light up like the sun.
I don't know how long you've been floating around here in the MT4GS forums, but back before we had S-OFF there was very little going on in here. Definite information exhange, but no ROMs or even software patches.
But spending time here we were getting our information together, and when we got S-OFF we hit the ground running. People were asking and asking about ROMs, and some just dove in and started doing ... others were testing for them, and we've all come a long way with this phone.
We've fixed some of the nagging problems, got a handful of awesome ROMs to choose from, each one lovingly constructed by it's developers and all are a pleasure to play with.
There are other interested parties working on interests for this device, and i'll release the ROM i've been working on when it's ready and I have the time to support it. There are definitely things coming down the pipeline.
The best way to get something done really is to do it yourself, and watching the MT4GS section of XDA grow has really reflected that concept more then anything else. Our sharing what we know has enabled people to do just that...
...nestled in the larger home of XDA you can learn how to do anything you could possibly want to do with the device right here.
Really...just think of something you want to do to your phone and then search XDA. If you don't find the information you're looking for (and usually a well-written tutorial) then you'll find someone else interested in doing something like that and have someone to work with. If it can be done, the answer is here somewhere if you can find it.
So let me counter your question with a question, OP, and I mean this in the friendliest manner possible -
What are you doing to support the device?
Good question actually nothing that's why I have the up most respect to those who develop for this phone. You guys are great and I'm in no way tryin to push u guys or anythin. Just asking a question I totally understand that u guys have a life outside of all this now that the kernel source is out things should get moving. Just got to have patience

Now that the Vibrant has an ICS ROM

Now that the Vibrant has an ICS ROM currently under development, and since I have read Vibrant ROM's can be ported to the Samsung Galaxy S 4G, does anyone know how feasible this would be? From my understanding the storage is a bit different (partitioning?) but the hardware in these devices appears very similar.
I've read the post about porting Vibrant ROM's but I've also read a few people haven't had much luck. Since I am on leave this coming week I've decided I'll tinker a bit with the concept, I'm also curious if anyone else has.
No doubt, I wish I had the capability to use the source to begin work on a ROM compiled directly towards the SGS4G, but alas I do not
Any ideas or inputs would be greatly appreciated. I am disappointed in the lack of development for this phone, but I do understand why.
Probably won't happen. We don't even have an aosp kernel compiled that I am aware of. Someone was trying to get the KJ6 kernel edited like drhonks and even that didn't turn out.
The couple devs we have left around here are just doing little tweaks and theaming the stock rom lately.... no real new developing afaik.
Kinda sucks... but this phone is pretty much dead in the water.

Yea we are struggling to get a dated cm7 so what makes you think we can get something newer than that.
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA App
@camalus But you do have the kernel released for GB by Samsung as of recent, which from what I've seen others are doing to get ICS working on their devices.
@daxecutioner24 If you can't find it, make it.
@EjLIFE Not going krazy over cm7,ill be fine withput it
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA App
People, cm kernel is made, just being tweaked, according to krylon. Lets wait patiently, maybe we'll get cm7, then someone will have enough courage to build ICS
Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda premium
I'd agree, CM7 would be great to have on this device. And hopefully their development of CM7 could make moving from CM7 to CM9 much more easier. I just know this device should run ICS just as well as the Vibrant, and I've seen people port Vibrant ROM's to the SGS4G so I was curious if one thought their was a faster possibility.
If you are so needy for new ROMs and development then you should do it yourself or be patiently waiting for WIPs the "few" but great developers have announced and not flooding the forum with wine and cheese... Just my two cents... Im just saying...

Why do people always respond like this.

I know, the devs are great and i feel bad for them for having to put up with alot of crap from other members , but sometimes the devs are assholes too.
Actually, my inquiry was related to the idea of porting the ROM from the Vibrant to this device myself, and asking if anyone with knowledge of doing so if it was even a worthy attempt.
I'm also going to say I have noticed the Samsung side of XDA seems to have only a few developers with knowledge and insight and TONs of people waiting for a chance to flame others. Here is a hint: your post is entirely unconstructive. It isn't your job to protect the developers and when you hop into a thread to shoot your two cents of flame it only details. You are also potentially pushing away the progress others might make by being a douche.
Thanks.

Yes. I get all your comments about how no good is to flame. I dont really care. Just to begin with. I only posted that because people only do is ask and complain about the "few" devs that only do theme-ing and/or their little so called development. Thats flameful and disrespectful itself because if you want some ICS, you can enjoy Ravers Octane. It may not be ICS but you get my idea. This is an old phone, everybody knows that and we just got GB source a few weeks ago. Its not going to be rainning ROMs instantly. Also, GB is older than the phone itself. The Vibrant has been around for maybe 2 years and many people jumped in the first round of Galaxys, probably skipped this Vibrant Plus so then we dont get many users or devs, therefore why so little development. ICS just got out and is available on like three phones whereas the GB have been around and phones now even come with it while we had to start from froyo...
Bah this is pointless debating. Im just sick of these threads talking sh!+ about development here. Everyone should be grateful of what we have. Again, you want something made then do it yourself. Like it or not, its simple like that.
I wont be visiting this so much contributive thread with my so much non contributive posts. And dont mind critizing my typos, English is not my first language.
All of you should call down.
Op, i remember seeing a thread on how to port any vibrant ROM to the sgs4g. It was pretty detailed and very good. Try looking into that to see if you could get a working ics from the vibrant

Same thing, since our phone is so different, wouldn't we need an ICS bootloader and or kernel source for ICS for it to work. CM7 may be here in a month, but ICS won't be here until a year after CM9 comes out, if at all. So, just wait for your 2 year tmo contract to end and switch to sprint and get the galaxy nexus 2(possibly 2012).

KitKat for HTC Thunderbolt

With Kitkat being ported to so many older devices because of the lowered system requirements, I figured its time we get one on the ThunderBolt. I by no means can do this on my own, so that is why I am starting this thread. I will try to reach out to as many devs as possible to get this going. Just a little about myself, Ive done basic ROM developement on a few devices, the most notable being the 2 generations of the Nexus 7. Over the past few months I have greatly expanded my knowledge and capabilities with android. The extent of my coding knowledge is basic Java, a little bit of C++, and arduino, which is why I need help for this. I see this as both a learning opportunity for me as well as a chance to participate in expanding the Thunderbolt dev community. I'm mainly looking for somone who can help with kernel and radio develpement, and someone who can help with porting the actual software over. The reason I need these people is because I have no experience in kernel development, and as for the actual developement of a KitKat rom, I'm sure its more complex then downloading KitKat source and throwing in the Thunderbolt device trees. I've been researching the topic and havent found much useful information. If you feel you can help support the effort please contact me.

There definitely are, but the difficulty of getting data on AOSP for this device, coupled with the age, current ownership/userbase, and developer interest translates to probably not. It's okay though, it was a great ride while it lasted.
