Hello guys,
I want to use my GTP to watch movies through my projector. I did some research, and found I can connect GTP to project by HDMI adapter.
The biggest problem is 4GB limitation of file size. External SD card format is fat32 which is allowed to have only maximum 4 GB.
I formatted it as ext4 and could copy bigger than 4GB. However, GTP can't recognized sd card. It said "not support file system".
Does anyone know how I can make my Tab recognize ext4 format sd card?
My tab is vanila, not rooted and has original factory ROM.
Official answer, you can't.
There is no direct support on an unrooted stock kernel to mount the external sd anything other than FAT32.
Even with a custom rooted kernel, getting the system to mount the external sd as an EXT4 partition would require some pretty fine work quite possibly using an init.d script or similar.
Have you tried the solution posted for the similar 7.7 model tab?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1522134
There is also a way to mount NTFS format cards using the method and apps in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1493294
Let us know how it works out. My tab is currently on loan so I can't try it myself.
I believe you need root to execute the mount command but I'm not certain.
Note that you will need to use the mount command manually each time you, e.g., reboot the device.
I suspect you may be able to get away with just adding it to /etc/fstab - that's what I would do with a Linux box but I'm not sure if that's deprecated with Android in particular.
acolwill,
Yes, I agreed that. I tried to search some script that can mount ext4 sd card, but gave up. Also, GTP does not have custom rom, doesn't it?
I appreciate your reply.
bydo,
Thanks for the solution!! It looks it is way way worth it to try!
I will try, and update the result here soon. I can't wait.
Thanks again, bro
h2g2,
Yes, but my GTP has random re-boot problem. LOL. Every 2 days, it re-boot randomly. I think rooting is not a big deal. Many awesome developer and hacker here already made good application for rooting. After that, I tried to find the command that can mount ext4 sd card, but gave up. After google, so many ways for different devices with different custom rom version. It was finding a needle in heystack.
But, I will try bydo way, and update the result for you guys.
Guys, once again, I really appreciate you answers.
I tested it!!!
Do you guys want to know the result?
It is working!!!!!
Lol, awesome!. I just tested 2 mkv 1080P and 720P movies.
Those movies worked perfect.
1080P movie was 8GB and 720P movie was 4.4GB, and sound was DTS codec.
I will make another post how to mount ntfs partition, how to play those movies. Guys, I want to post here, but I think we should share this with more people. That's why I want to make a new post, and describe in detail.
I will post the link here, so you can find it easily.
Special thanks to bydo!
I wrote a new post.
here is the link. You can get instruction on this link.

With non from these 2 Kernels instalations cifs will work.
I/O Error and so on.
Than I found the Information, that I need the .ko exactly for the installed Kernel.
I hope someone can help.

I don't know which kernel you installed, but with my kernel you don't need any modules at all - just mount and go.

Yes as _that says if you choose his kernel from the options then CIFS MOUNT works as it always does
Also you should upgrade to CROMi-X 5 found here
Hy and many thanks for your fast support.
I have tried with those 2 kernels:
TF700: Asus 10.6.1.14.8 Modded Stock Kernel V4 / By That.
and
TF700ata2SD Asus 10.6.1.14.8 Modded_that v4 Kernel.
In ether case cifs dont will work.
The errors are, no such a device or directory... this error I have fixed, I have createt a new account named asus, after that I become I/O Error.
Info, CromiX5 ist installed, Android Version 4.2.1

OK I'm using cifs manager as well.
So I have share as 192.168.0.5/Music
Mount as /mnt/cifs/music

Load cifs modules on startup and do not use insmod as you don't need it.
I have seen, that I´m using Comi V4.7, now I download V5.
I will use DATA2SD again, are in V5 Kernels included with DATA2SD Support?
Also I have activatet Gast Account on my System, but I become permission denied Error too.

CIFS Load on Startup is activ.

I also dont know what wend wrong here...
I have checked and disebled Firewall in my Fritz.Box and on my PC, nothing was blocked.
And yes, connected via the same Router over Wlan.
With ES File Explorer I have acces to the Directorys on my PC.
Now I have Installed Cromi V5 and it has Data2SD Kernels and Support.
Now first start runs and I will try it with new Rom...
New Rom is installed, but also here I have some Problems, not only with cifs...
Now cifs Error is again, no such file or directory...
...but I have found an other possibility to play my Files on Asus Pad.
Splashtop and Power Cinema V5 on PC. Works fine. I have full control over the tab to the pc desktop. Start Power Cinema, choose Music and the Sound comes from the Tablet only, I can also browse and start an play all my Files...
Is not the perfect way, but now I will try to connect the Pad via mini-HdMI-HDMI to my Yamaha Receiver.
Also I think that was not a clean installation.
I have flshed first mod_Data2SD.zip and bevor that I have wiped Cache and Dalvik.
Than I have flashed also with perform a full wipe the new Cromi V5 and the second Kernel I have choosen.
After the Reboot, all Apps, installed in the Crome V4.7 are still there...
Maybe I have some missunderstandings about Data2SD using.
I have to read and read again.
This is not my first Android an Flash... I have flashed some HTC, Samsung, unlocked, rootet ans so on, but the Asus confused me...
Hope for changes...

Well if you had data2sd on 4.7 and updated to 5.0 then you will still see the apps. I force it to use the correct partition regardless of the mount-data2sd file being flashed....
Yes, I also think so...
But where is a possibility to format the second ext4 Partition on SDCard???
There is no way in the first flash, modData2SD and nothing by flashing the CromiX.
I only can format SDCard, but this formats only the first Partition. I have a 16 GB Class 10 UHS 1 mSD Card, one Part is 10 GB second Part is ~4 GB. If I format the SD Card, only the 4 GB will be formated.
I think, this is the beginning of all my Problems here with cifs and so on.
I have seen, that the error "No such Device or Directory" doesnt mean the path to the PC, it means the path to the mountpoint. Under mnt/cifs is nothing Named like Music aand I cant create it there, its a read only file system...
So what can I do to become a really clean installation with nothing old in it?
Have I to flash first without Data2SD Support, than maybe instal a partition Manager for Android to format the ext4 Part on SD and than flash again but now with Data2SD???

I don't understand how your card is set up. Is the Ext4 partition 4GB? That isn't really big enough.
Also if you want wipe the 4GB ext4 then you must flash the mount-data2sd first in twrp.....

Yes, but the initial formatting must be done on a Linux system (or from the command line in Android with a proper mke2fs binary).
No no, missunderstanding...
10 GB is the ext4 Partition, 4 GB ist the rest from the total 16 GB IHS 1 Class 10 mSD Card.
And I did this as well, first flash the mount Data2SD.zip file, and I also wiped there, than I reboot, Power off and go again to twrp and flash the CromiX5 with Kernel how supports Data2SD an perform a full Wipe...
Allways there are still all apps on SDCard, I cant controll it, I dont have a Linux system here...
After the flashs I have only a updated Cromi, not a new system.
First boot runs and its like before.
Is there no way to format the 10 Gb ext4 Partition? Win7 x64 and Acronis could´nt read the ext4.
ooops, I did it again...
I have seen, that I can format the ext4 with paragon partitons manager suite 11 I have installed.
Is this a conform format for this job?

I cant see this.
Now I have the mSD Card in my Acer Laptop and Paragon part. Manager 11 Suite is running, but the Prog shows the whole 16 GB as 14,9 GB unformatted...
Confused again.
In my Tablet ist shows only 4 GB, the 10 GB I cant see.
Retest with Acronis Disc Director Suite 11 and it shows 4 GB Fat32 first part and 10 GB second Part as unformated.
A friend has done the partition and format Job for me, so how can I change this??
Can a take Paragon to create first Part ext4 10 GB and the rest 4 GB Fat32 for this job?
What a f....
Now the using of Data2SD is history.
From 7am to 1pm I have tried to format an correct the Partitionstype of my 16 GB Class 10 UHS 1 mSD Card but it was only wasting time.
I have tried these jobs with MiniTool Partitions Manager Home Edition and SD Formatter.
Here I found a german page with Infos to create a ext4 Partition:
http://www.handy-faq.de/forum/android_forum/219275-ext4_partition_erstellen.html
But the Card was useless in PC and Tablet.
Now I have a fresh Installation, without Data2SD, but all my Apps are gone and not recovered by Market Place.
So I have to flash again.
Have someone here a Link to an Howto to create ext4 10GB first Partition an the rest ~4 GB with Fat32?
I´m helpless and frustrated.
So please, give some help.

People in the Data2SD thread said that MiniTool doesn't work correctly and that you have to use a Linux-based partitioning and formatting utility, e.g. gparted.
And if you create your ext4 partition first, it won't be usable for Data2SD either. As the documentation of my Data2SD add-on says, the ext4 partition must be the second primary partition.
I'd suggest you attack one problem after the other - this thread was originally about some CIFS problems - are these fixed now?
No nothing is fixed an I have created this thread to fix the problems.
All goes hand in hand.
Without a clean installation of cromi nothing works, than all apps are still there with all the errors. If I cant instal properly correct than I have the same problems like bevor.
This all I have told ya, here in this thread.
Normaly the mount data2sd.zip has to format the ext4 partition while flashing and perform a wipe, but this was not happend. After flashing mount data2SD.zip, reboot and flashing than cromix5 with full wipe all former installed apps an accounts are still there, and so I have overtaken all old problems too.
I have tried my best to make this work but I cant get it going. I have a sandisk 64gb microsd w/ a USB OTG adapter. When I plug it in and use stickmount i can read the device but no write. This is a problem because I want to carry roms on the card to play in retroarch and it needs to be able to write back to the card. I mounts it fine w/o the exfat binaries but even with i dont have write access. I tried total commander with the usb plugin which give me write access but I cannot find where it mounts the usb for other apps to access. As far as i can tell you can only access within total commander. this would be fine for launching videos and such but it wont launch my roms this way. Is there a happy solution somewhere in the middle?
If you can't get writable storage, you'll need support at a kernel level

Im using ES file explorer. strange thing is that even without any of the exfat binaries it reads just fine through stickmount but cant write. Last night I formatted to NTFS and tried USB Go Helper which is supposed to support NTFS read/write. USB Go Helper gives me an error code 9 when I try to mount it but I can read the stick just fine still no write.
As far as I know there's only 1 kernel that supports r/w but I wanted to go w/ the franco kernel but it doesnt support it.

Is there a particular reason you don't want to use FAT32? Last I checked, I was able to read and write to my SanDisk 64GB MicroSD card after formatting it to FAT32.
4GB+ files is usually the reason

Yeah. I have Blu-ray MKV files (average size 9GB) since all I really use it for is video consumption. I just use mkvmerge to split them up into 4GB files. Works beautifully. However, I can see this limitation being a deal breaker for some.

Yep, no doubt conversion can compress massively. Most average length 1080 movies can get to 2GB without loss of quality but it can be a chore and time consuming.
Not an issue for me. As a cross-platform user, I have no choice but to use FAT32

the roms are not that big. biggest would be some PSX roms around 700mb. But its a 64gb card so I'll also be storing some movies and other things on there. I guess conversion/splitting is an option but I was kind of hoping for a solution that 'just works'.

You can also use SELinuxModeChanger app to do this. Kitkat runs with mode set to Enforcing. I use the app to set Permissive (same as your command above) when I need to write to my OTG 64GB exFAT Sandisk, but then switch it back to Enforcing when I'm finished so nothing else is compromised.

Enable OTG.
If it doesn't help, it means the Pixel cannot read NTFS formatted file system.
Use one of these to read NTFS formatted systems:

2. exFAT/ NTFS for USB by Paragon

Some people have had success with writing to USB flash drives, through third-party apps like Total Commander and others. You might need additional plugins for such apps though.
Edit: Mixplorer also works well for writing to USB flash drives. If needed, the custom USB OTG driver can be enabled from Mixplorer settings.

A few days ago I read that one can connect a flash drive to a Pixel 7 and upload files from the Pixel 7 to the flash drive. So I connected a flash drive that has one file on it and that is formatted as NTFS. However I don't know what to do next because I can't find anything on the P7P that refers to that flash drive. Could someone please point me in the right direction?

Maybe it can't read NTFS, I'm not sure. But USB connectivity on Pixel devices is read only, and not r/w. exFAT has been supported for years now

I'm confused where there is any trip-up; I apologize if it's simply going over my head.
I use the Kingston DataTraveler MAX (256 GB) USB-C flash drive directly plugged into the P7P, formatted to exFAT, and that's all there is to it to do my monthly backup (that I do before I manually update the security Full Factory image) -- both using Swift Backup, SMS Backup&Restore, and manually moving non-data folders from the internal SD!
It pops up in the stock Files app (in "Storage devices" section under "internal storage"; I can't recall what exactly it comes up as off the top of my head), and it definitely can do r/w. No plugins needed, no third-party app needed, no OTG setting required to be ticked (at least with the stock Files app).
It's very straightforward; I'm afraid I'm missing something. Is the comments only speaking on running it with NTFS format?
Again, sorry if I'm missing something obvious...
@simplepinoi177
Google Files app is buggy, and often does not even show the USB flash drive as one of the destinations to choose from, after selecting the copy file operation, even though it otherwise shows the USB flash drive.
When it does work, it does not copy over the original timestamps of the files to the USB flash drive.
The timestamp issue is also present while copying with the good old Documents UI.

Thank you for explaining. I wasn't aware of those issues with it.
My personal experience is never having any issues with it (both the flash drive nor the Files app); and I use it on my two P7Ps every month since getting it release day. And all I do is do the copy file operation as I only use that drive for backing my data up.
I've never took notice of the timestamps, but it's not a priority for me, but it's good to be aware of; so thank you for informing me.

Yours is formatted in exFAT (which is an improved version of FAT32) which is kind of universal. Works on Windows, Android , Linux and macOS too.

Yes. NTFS is Microsoft's file system that works as read-only in macOS and doesn't work in many Android devices (OnePlus is a known exception).

Since when? As far as I can remember, I had to install a 3rd party app to make it work. It's been quite a while since I connected a NTFS formatted drive.
When I plug a USB stick (that has been formatted the long way as ExFAT) into my P7P and get to USB Preferences, tapping "This device" results in "Couldn't switch". And I'm using whatever File app came with my (as of April 2023) new unit. And it's using Android 13, and the unit tells me that all apps have been updated (as of May 8 when I performed the Update operation).
I see that there is no consensus on how to format the USB stick. Some say ExFAT, some say FAT32, some say that the P7P can read NTFS and others say that it can't... What's a guy to believe??? In any event, I've tried all formats and my P7P is not able to read any of them.

Use exFAT. It is universal and is supported by most operating systems.
Are sure your USB stick isn't corrupt?

I don't see where you're getting USB Preferences...it's never anything I need to do/choose "tapping 'this device'", it merely shows up under internal storage (as I've mentioned before) -- as DataTraveler MAX. This is using the stock Files app as well. I'm also updated to May update.
If anything, the only thing I found that I do that I didn't need to before is there is an "eject" option in the notifications to choose to safely remove it. Other than that, there isn't/wasn't anything particular to get it all working for me; to detect, read, write, delete, etc.
I did a bit of research on what to format USB-C flash drives for Pixel 7's and it said to do ExFAT; and ExFAT is the only format that can be read by both Microsoft and MacOS -- so I figured that kind of compatibility is also the reason why it's best for Android/Pixels....
It's curious how you're having so much issues when it's so simple (at least to me in my experience).
Like @TheMystic said, it makes me think it might be a corrupted drive if you're having that much inconsistencies and issues....

It shows up in the notification area when you connect a USB. You can choose how you want to control the connection: using the phone itself or using the computer that the phone is connected to.
You'll basically see 2 notifications every time you connect a USB device.

It has always been there, unless you turn OFF Android System notifications. Not sure about custom ROMs though.

I'm familiar with the 2 choices on choosing how to control the connection -- but why would that apply with a USB Flash (HD/SD) Drive; as opposed to a computer? It would neither gain power from a flash drive nor need to make the "distinguishment" to transfer via MTP or PTP, or need any device "control" -- it's a flash drive, it would only be for file transferring/storing.
At the very least, when I connect mine, there is no such options in my notification (nor is it needed/necessary)...I only get the two options to "Explore" or "eject"; not like the multiple I get when connecting to the computer...
So I've been trying different Android 13 roms bc I was looking for a specific feature. I finally found one that works, only to discover it can't recognize my 128gb, or any NTFS usb drive (recognizes fat32 no issues). I did a research but I only found work arounds through apps but this won't work bc I use the drive for Swift backup and restore. Is there a fix for this issue? Device is rooted.
thanks in advance

Like I said I don't just want to have access to the files. I want the OS itself to recognize it so it's accessible through all apps

you can't implement NTFS support that simple since VOLD manages your external file systems. It would be much easier not to take NTFS.

I know it used to be possible through magisk mod and custom kernel. I'm just not up to date. NTFS is a must for me. I'll keep looking hopefully I find something

You are going to flash a custom kernel to be able to use NTFS with a Magisk Module? Then trying to use a USB stick with NTFS (which could be an unstable connection) for saving your backup files created with Swift Backup? Sounds quite complicated.

No mate! I meant there was solutions back in the day to add ntfs fs through custom kernel and through Magisk mods, not together. Been using ntfs USB sticks for titanium/swift/nand backup and restore for 10 years never had an issue. I rarely save backups on internal storage
