My google hangouts icon still uses the gTalk icon. I've tried uninstalling the app and then reinstalling it through play, but it still comes back with the Talk icon. I've also deleted cache and data for the app.

No. My nova Icon theme is set to default. But that got me thinking: I tried installing another launcher and it has the correct hangouts icon. So I uninstalled nova and reinstalled it, and it is working again. Not sure what the issue was there.
hangout sux....video call doesnt work on mine...if i uninstall updates i have no video camera to make a video call.
I just wanna chime in on the Hangouts bashing.... I can't believe how much they ruined this app.. I mean, instant messaging is pretty simple right? Why change it? Now sometimes I won't get an IM for 45 minutes, I can't see who's online, it FC's all the time... Crap crap crap. I restored my old TiBu backup of the original talk. If anyone else want's it let me know..

If your notifications are coming that late and you were getting a lot of FCs, I'm thinking it is a problem with your setup. I have had neither of those issues from the moment it updated and haven't really heard it from other people either. As far as online status, I'm a little split. I liked having it, but on the other hand, we don't have an online status for text messages either and we don't get riled up about that, so I am adjusting to just sending a message when I have one to send. If it is urgent and they don't reply I'll contact them a different way. I see no reason to roll back to talk.

Same issue here on stock nexus 4, i uninstalled it with titanium but no change. Also it doesn't work, i tried to send an im from my girlfriends phone but i didnt received anything.
Using Nova, menu/nova settings/look and feel/icon theme/ choose default. That worked for me to change hangout icon.

My problem was from nova launcher, i had Talk icon in nova, but hangouts in trebuchet. Solution: reinstall nova and do a set everything manual, don't use backup or you will end up again with the talk icon.
Just long press the icon - edit - click the app icon, then choose another icon on Nova Launcher. Easy once you've done it once and know the trick.

It's not a problem with my setup. Talk works flawlessly.
The things is this isn't text messaging though. This is instant messenger. A completely different format. It's nice to be able to see who's online to talk and not otherwise engaged. You don't get that in text messaging.

But they actually meant this to be like talk and messages combined. They should be incorporating SMS into it soon.

The biggest issue I have, and maybe I'm just over looking it, but I can't change my status. I liked being able to be invisible like a ninja or busy if I didn't want to be bothered and so on. Running Goodness 10.0.3 if that means anything.
Optional Icon Solution
If anyone is looking to change the icon and happens to own tasker, it is a very easy fix. Just create a task to open hangouts and pick any icon you want. Then create an icon that simply runs the task. If you own the app, it should be pretty easy to figure out.

Hey all,
I really liked the fact that i could see the facebook status of the person that i was texting at the top of the thread in 2.1. Is there anyway that you could get that same functionality in Froyo?
haha i just noticed its not there! LOL nice catch. Bump to this
i still have it
Would porting the messaging app from 2.1 to 2.2 be the only way we could do this? Would this even be possible? Because i know a lot of people use Handcent but the reason i dont use it is because i like being able to see the persons most recent facebook status at the top of my thread

It's a gray box for you because your sim doesn't list your number. If you see your number under Settings -> About -> Status. If it lists your number under My Number you can just add yourself as a contact with a picture and it will show up. Otherwise there are some phones that allow you to add the number. I personally used a simcard-reader/writer for my computer.
Yeah i have seen the messanging app on my freinds phone and i dont really mind the fact that there is a picture for each message, but I would really miss seeing the persons most recent facebook status because I might not necessarily see thier status on my news feed. The lack facebook status on the messanging app is the only reason I havent flashed the froyo test build

I know, but thanks for your help. I had to use an old SE phone to change my SIM number. But seriously this is a really large oversight on Google's part. Like I am suppose to make a contact of myself just so I can have a picture there?? That's ridiculous.

Check the market for it. It's all kinds of awesome. Ignore the fact that the market description is in Chinese, it's very cool.
Been using Youlou since upgrading to 2.1 a few weeks ago. I must say it's a really slick address book.
this is way faster then stock froyo address book ...just missing option to create shortcut for direct dialer
looks good. i think i will try this one
How can I use this app as default dialer? I need it because I want to see the counter for missed calls?
I love this app too. The widget shows missed calls BTW the widget is awesome.

It's frustrating, this app.
It's rad, the UI looks awesome. It pretends to be so functional... But it's so far from it.
No * or # key, really? I get that it's chinese, but come on. How many users have to request it in the comments before you just add the damn things?
I don't want to have to add a widget to homescreen. There isn't room for it. Make the app fully functional without it (aka show missed calls).
Doesn't sync with facebook.
Doesn't thread together contacts (like say if you had a regular phone and a google voice phone already in your contacts... in the default I can just thread the two together, in Youlu I have to delete one and then add the other to the contact manually)
Pictures are sometimes there for my favs, sometimes not. I even re add a picture or change the picture. It sometimes takes the app opening closing like 5 times before it appears, and then it can leave just as easily.
After all that I'm still struggling to remove it from my phone, but being realistic, this thing isn't a dialer. It's just not. It's a cool UI that pretends to be one, while missing a half a dozen key components.
Sometimes I wonder if the stock dialer was something that was actually ****ty, and then the current stock dialer came out with a hip name and was third party, how crazy would people go for that? It has everything.

I have no choice but to completely agree irish22022 it's a very nice looking UI and I enjoyed it quite a lot until I was trying to get in touch with customer service (*611) or check the balance on my phone (#BAL) it's extremely frustrating to be missing these two key digits, almost a showstopper however I keep using it hoping they will eventually add what we need. As far as for only allowing one account that doesn't bother me so much because I have all of my contacts backed up to one Google account which only made sense to me, so that doesn't bother me so much. However the * and # issue really needs to be corrected.

you can open the sms client in the app drawer that appears after installation, go to settings, and disable everything.
It's still ridiculous that they install that on your computer along with the address book. Should definitely be a seperate app.
Just update is now acceptinf # &*
It has been the fastest smart dialer for me-even faster than dialer one. I would still like it if you could search within the call log and/or the contact list as well.

are you at least in the sms client? it looks nothing like the phone book. If it's not in your app drawer, open up the dialer, go to contacts, click on a contact, and click the envelope rather then the dialer (if you don't see the envelope, then go to settings and look for the option to include a text shortcut for your contacts). This defaults to youlu's sms client. From there, hit the menu button, click settings and disable notifications.
You can't uninstall the sms app, but you can silence it so you don't know it's there. And you also can't change the default sms app within youlu phone book, it will always open up their sms app.

I recently installed the newest paranoid android ROM and im loving it. It uses the stock google messaging app and there isnt an option to enable recurring notifications of a missed text, call or MMS.
im looking for a way to do this. Ive already tried a few things.
1. handcent - i dont like the app.
2. GO SMS - i dont like the app.
pop up notifier was suggested, but im looking for a different route before falling back on that.
any help? thanks in advance.

Is anyone else annoyed/confused by the notifications presented by Hangouts?
Notification icons shown in the status bar from a text message or an actual Hangout message look the same, and you can only tell its a text message by sliding the down the status bar. Maybe a silly a reason to complain, but it would have been a lot more convenient if a different icon was implemented for a text message vs. a hangouts message.
Any known workaround to this? Or will we have to wait until Google decides to look into it.

This is exactly what i do.
The idea was that you use the same app to message people. You just open hangouts and message, and the phone will send the message whatever way works best (Hangouts if it can, sms otherwise.)
I'm a fan of it personally but I could see why a lot of people wouldn't like it.

You can try looking into alternatives for an SMS app. I use Textra and it is so much better than using the hangouts for SMS. I like to keep my hangouts separate from my texting and the Textra UI is very nice and clean.

Although I like that Hangouts is a unified messaging app (I still think there can be tweaks to make it much better) - I might have to try Textra out of sheer curiosity. I have seen numerous people cite this app and say nothing but good things about it so naturally i'm curious.

I understand your POV on it but on the flip side, I think creating another icon might just undo the direction they are moving towards with hangouts. Maybe a variation of the hangouts notification with an envelope in the middle to distinguish between the two. Only issue is, when you get a chat AND sms then you run into the issue of having 2 different icons pop up for the same app technically. Unless there's a way it can switch between the two and look like a loop movement if you know what I mean

I never really thought of it as issue to have two notifications for the app, but like you said it might not go along with what they're trying to do (unifying everything). But if they were actually able to loop it like that, it would plain awesome. Maybe a unlikely feature for now (especially if it were to come from Google), but maybe some future devs are willing to work on it... would be amazing if they did :good:

I don't know if anyone has used the gs5 but one of the features I loved from it was a quick pop up for sms that you could reply in and send off without closing the app you are in. It was very handy say if you are playing a game or don't want exit g+.
I know there are some apps on the play store called pop up but they are ugly and not very smooth. And when you reply in them it still shows as an unread on your messages. So all around they are far from perfect.
I was wondering if anyone had seen anything like this for xposed or maybe just a root app. Let me know if you see anything like this because I would love to have it on the m8.

There is a setting in Sense 6 Toolbox under Various Mods - Popup Notification that is similar to the S5 feature. I use it all the time. You can make the back ground blur when you receive the notification and it looks nice.
I know you may want to use the stock messaging app but the handcent app does this and I love it. I rarely go into the actual app. Here's the link if you want to check it out: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.handcent.nextsms
