[q] binary count back to zero - Galaxy Note 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hey guys, i have a big problem and was wondering if anybody can help...
i have a n8013 that i bought from best buy and have their insurance, now what happened was that it accidently got dropped and now its able to turn but it freezes. it has custom binary count at 3 and i know i can remove it using mobile odin but since it freezes i cant even install mobile odin, therefore not being able to remove it that way. is there another way i can remove it? i can get into download mode, recovery and even boot but freezes
anybody know of another way? or do you guys think they wont check that?

wow, sounds like a difficult thing to do.
Well there is this triangle away app which i guess u cant use since the tablet freezes.
Why u dont try to flash a new custom rom there? maybe that helps it to boot compleatly.
or wipe data etc from cwm?
try them.
i dont think they work but give it a try. I dont think that there is any other way to reset the binary :/

Since you already dropped it make sure it's broke all the way. Not sure what best buys insurance policy is like but break it completely then the binary count won't be an issue.

After reading those comments, I've got visions of a war film in my head now, something like a bloke ready to do himself over, with a pistol shot to the head, after having an arm and both legs blown of haha

Phone works, but is completely screwed...

So I went to rooted stock herehttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1366041an d everything's just been screwed up every since, but I've been to busy to deal with it... now I'm sending it in for a warranty replacement and it's stuck...nothing will flash on cwm,I only get an error, Odin won't even detect it.. how can I get this back to stock? I need to send it soon cause I don't want to end up paying for 2 phones... thanks!

What error is it giving you in CWM? What version of CWM? In reference to Odin - do you have the drivers installed, usb debugging checked, etc.? Have you tried different usb cords/ports/computers?
I'm not at my phone right now but the cwm error was somethin bout a file missing from /data... I literally just rooted and flashed tweaked to the refurbed one they sent me and all is well, the old one won't be detected in any way by my computer tho n it's been doing funny **** every since I left eclipse.. I know it's not the computer or hardware, but any attempt to flash on cwm OR Odin results in failure.. should I even worry since it looks like stock anyway? Lol idk if they really check at Verizon..

Uh yes they check. Dont you think that if you know how to do this then their techs would too. I can tell you that is the first thing they look for. If they determine your phone is rooted you WILL receive a bill for full retail price.
While I would agree is there proof of it happening irl? I personally would raise hell if they did to me. I bought the charge at full price because of the possibility of loosing unlimited. It went from flagship phone to abandoned before my contract was done. Luckily I had an upgrade to burn and got a S3 but even then they pulled the locked bootloader ****. I know why, to keep people buying devices but they really like to treat their customers like ****

Have to return A2 for replacement, question about bootstrap

So, I bricked my last A2 and had it replaced and the one they gave me is horrific (bunch of issues...). Anyway, I know I have to unroot, they will most certainly detect that. However, What about bootstrap? Do you think they will notice that when they bring it to the back to do their "troubleshooting"? Because I was just planning on unrooting and then uninstalling bootstrap app (incase they know what that is, i know that that wont remove they bootstrap). So, what are your opinions on that?

Not sure if I'm completely off topic but don't want to start a new thread either: so does AT&T/Motorola salvage the bricked phones returned/exchanged under warranty? I understand if you microwave it, it's gone for good, but otherwise do they have a way to salvage a phone with hosed bootloader or hard bricking? Will it require special hardware setup to recover these phones? I am sure bricking would be a common phenomena in Moto's lab ...

Hey now lol. I try I try. I totally fixed my Captivate...after I bought this AWESOME phone. But I didn't brick this one, it was a bad replacement, and my last one, yeah FXZ confused me so my ignorance overtook my ability to fix it, because I couldnt find the files on the forums (links were down) and flashed wrong ones (live and learn?). But yes, being a sophmore in high school I probably shouldn't being doing this stuff as I don't have any money lol.

Yes, unless the EMMC is corrupted beyond redemption they have special flashing tools to restore phones to a usable condition. Just think about when the phone is made; it is a blank slate. They have to have a way to flash it initially. They can use a similar method to resurrect it if it is not damaged beyond repair.

Hmmm ... that's exactly is my point; if it is all software, why doesn't it leak like RSDlite? Then users could recover these bricked phones themselves and no need of these warranty calls. It must be some special hardware (to be connected to JTAG?) which even our service centers do not have available. Then we could take our out of warranty phones to them and get it restored for a small fee. Now if I take a bricked phone to them, they change the motherboard and charge ~30% of the phone value.

That is because there is an efuse that was blown as part of this process, and you can't unblow a fuse/efuse. That is why you are getting new boards. I was at one the AT&T service centers last week and we looked at one of the bricks, and it did throw 2 efuses that I could find. We could connect them to JTAG with the correct connetions, but we could NOT see the phone from the JTAG device/software.

Is it not an inefficient (or dangerous (or suicidal)) design that if you overwrite the bootloader (even by an older version) then a efuse blows somewhere and the motherboard becomes useless. You may refuse to boot if the bootloader isn't trusted but killing the phone in the process sounds too bad to me. Would this happen with phones with unlocked bootloader too?

No, this is a Motorola ONLY thing, as inefficient as it might be. There is no need for anything like is in a unlocked bootloader phone. This happens because these phones are just like iphones in that Motorola does NOT want us "playing" with them, or doing any kind of dev work on them, Moto phones have a HUGE history of being non developer friendly. That is also why certain devs like me find them a challenge and want to "breakthrough" all that.

Well, except their managers we all see how it backfired. It doesn't interfere with people who wants to stay stock, and if it gets bricked doing some dev, they get a warranty call (and maybe they have to swap in 90% cases). Doesn't help anyone.
However I had a Milestone before (why did I buy another Moto afterwards questions my sanity) but even if it had a locked bootloader (and after stock 2.1 no update was given), devs could port froyo and finally CM7 and CM9. I am hoping in spite of the lock, we'll be able to port CM9/10, keeping the kernel same. I am hopeful as LG Thrill 4G, Motorola Droid 3 has CM9 already.
Well I'm offtopic already so don't bother replying

[Q] Well... I've done it... Hard Bricked my phone...

Yea I know, make fun of me. Tonight I was trying to install CM 9.0 for my i727.
I already had Clockwork and Odin installed, everything was working 100%
I decided to follow TeamChopsticks guide to get there.
Unfortunately CM was not installing after I did the "Format /system (mounts and storage->format /system)" step and I decided to take matters into my own hands.
I went into Odin hoping to just flash CM. I then saw that the only option was "PIT" and naive, stupid, tired me decided to do it.
I mean what could go wrong. I had titanium backup and everything.
Turns out I probably reformatted my internal mem to something my i727 can not use. Yay...
Now my phone won't go into download mode, it wont boot, actually it wont do anything.
I've spent the last 3 hours reading online on what to do. To my avail I found nothing. (I found QPST but it won't let me add "COM4" which my phone is on, so it's useless)
My phone is recognized by the computer as "QHSUSB_DLOAD" and Odin used to have it in COM4.
I really don't want to send my phone anywhere, I've had it since Christmas so it's not the newest, and upgrading to a SGSIII would be an option.
What should I do? What CAN I do?
Hopeless college guy here. =/

FYI this one had a faulty usb port and they were out of refurbs, so they just sent me a brand new one (second replacement). So follow your dreams, I guess. : D

If the device is still under warranty, no problem. Otherwise no matter what you say the retail AT&T reps are sort of clueless around Android and won't offer any steps to try. I just picked up my Skyrocket on Friday and want to go slowly haha I soft bricked my Captivate way back in 2010 so I understand how it feels.

tracking software are useless

I lost my phone last week and it was found today because the "finder/thief" return the phone to my service provider after I requested the IMEI to be blocked.
After I got my phone, everything has already been factory reset by the "finder/thief", the SD was missing, we know who probably took it. No wonder whereismydroid and Plan B apps never worked, because they are absolutely useless. All thieves have to do is take the battery and sim card out, go home, factory reset with ODIN or something, all your information and those so called tracking Apps are gone, and Plan B can NOT be installed remotely because your gmail is no longer signed into your phone.
So IMO these apps are useless.
user installed apps? yea they are. its why i flash cerberus as a system app (survives a factory reset). i dont have a pin lock or anything of teh sort to make teh theif want to reset. instead im quite alright with him opening it up and calling/texting whomever he wants cuz ill be tracking him the whole time. chances are the guy who buste dteh window of yoru car to get the phone doesnt know to take teh device get it into download mode and use odin to wipe out the stuff i installed

Has anyone ever paid Samsung to repair a Hard Bricked Infuse?

If so, do you have any idea how much it will cost? The phone was rooted so I'm fairly certain it's not covered by any warranty.
before you do anything of that nature, what is going on, please explain what happened in as much detail as possible, screenshots would be very helpful. i have"bricked" my infuse countless times, and i've still got it running and working great right now, never had to pay for anyone to fix it or anything, as far as i can tell the infuse is pretty much unbrickable.. so if you would like i would like to try and help you out so you may not have to pay to fix something that may not be broke

Just wanted to update everyone here. I was very honest and upfront with the woman I started my trouble ticket with and told her right from the start that I had rooted my phone and caused my own problems. Well I got an email today from Samsung stating that my phone had been re-flashed and was being shipped back to me today by UPS. All I paid for this service was $2.46 for a box and shipping materials at my local UPS outlet. There was no charge for re-flash or shipping! I will always buy Samsung!!!!! :good:
Now to decide what to do since I now have two working Samsung phones on Straight Talk. LOL! Should I reactivate the infuse with it's currently inactive Straight Talk sim card or just use it for my Google Voice phone number and keep my new phone for network calls...
thats great, really surprised samsung didnt make you pay...
I'm surprised also... quite a deal.
How long from when you sent it out until when you got it back? (just curious).

I haven't actually gotten it back yet. I shipped it out on Monday, They got it on Wednesday and Thursday I got the email saying it was shipped back in my direction. I expect it by Saturday at this rate! Also, I called Straight Talk and apparently I can reactivate my Straight Talk SIM card in it with no extra charge since activated a replacement phone before sending it off and I pay for the unlimited plan. All I'll need is a new number for it since the replacement phone has my existing number and I'll have two working Samsung phones for the price of one phone plan. (I still think the Straight Talk representative was full of caca in that regards. LOL! I'll believe it when I see it!) :silly: Life can NOT be that good or I've just entered the Twilight Zone!
Congratulations man.
Btw it's almost impossible to hard brick lol.
I saw your picture of it and it wasn't hard bricked. Either way it's good their fixing it. Consider yourself very lucky. They usually won't fix that.
You take responsibility when you flash.

Yeah well I wasn't able to figure it out and I felt safer sending it to someone who knew what they were doing. My grasp of tech these days is somewhat impaired by meds that keep me from thinking as clearly as I used to. :silly:

Well in that case I would suggest you stick with the stock ROM from now on. If you are not willing to try to bring it back from an Oh Sh1t! you don't need to be playing with custom ROM's or other mods.

Never said I wasn't willing to try! I said I didn't feel up to the challenge. There's a big difference there. I don't however have any plans to re-root it for now. Maybe if, or when my brain isn't so scrambled by my current medical situation..... Sometimes, the smartest thing a person can do is recognize their own limitations.

Very true words
Thanks to op. As a result of this thread, we all learned another option for recovering from inevitable (if you flash) soft brick. It's probably not the first option for most, but it certainly may be helpful to know there's a backup plan if you just can't get your computer to cooperate with heimdal/odin

Glad I could help! :silly: And really upfront honesty when talking to the person who's creating your trouble ticket with humility and self effacing deprecation is recommended! I was a twat for breaking my warranty and I admitted it and they fixed it. Even if I had had to pay a little for the repairs, it would have been worth it! I have my better camera (With an actual Flash) and GPS device back now! FYI - In case anyone is wondering about the Straight Talk Samsung Galaxy Centura camera, it is only 3 Mega Pixels and has no flash!

I would like to apologize for that response. There are many more people on here more deserving of that type pop off if one must have them.
If you were having a good day I would highly recommend Zen's [GBRUCLB3] []>>>>> r.e.v.e.n.a.n.t <<<<< First Edition - 2013.04.30OM][
The only thing required to flash it would be to flash one of Zen's rooted kernel with cwm red recovery using either Odin or One of Qkster's Heimdall one clicks http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=23118162&postcount=3
