S3- found 'Samsung note' pen settings... Wonder - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

So I was just looking through some deeper settings in the galaxy s3 and found that it has pen settings and pen attach/detach sounds loaded into it. Not really sure why...

this a stock or custom rom

Has to be a Rom
clean Rom/xda powerd by zero-lemon & tweaked out!!

Because Samsung is lazy and use most of the ROMs for a lot of their devices. Features are triggered by hardware codes or minor code changes and such. It is more than just turning on the feature in most cases. This is how a lot of these features are ported. But usually need some work to get going. If you look through all the icons included, there are folders full of icons not used because they are for other devices.

That's correct...even in my galaxy player days I found lots of icons in systemui and framework-res that were unused, which just made it confusing for me when wanted to theme something.

It's the stock rom. I just got the phone a couple days ago

and where/how can I find these settings
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 4 Beta

I have this on my synergy rom although I can't remember where I saw it since they are using a hybrid framework with Note components I assume that's what it's from or it's from the Note application itself, the S3 doesn't have a digitizer so those settings are probably useless. Check settings>about phone and scroll down to build number see what it says theres.

If you tear into the Settings.apk there quite a bit of code regarding the S-Pen.
Samsung is too lazy to remove all the code, so they remove what is needed to make the function not work.
a prime example is VZW not letting our SG3's have the Call/Message block and Blocking Mode...
I found so much code left still for these things, that I easily was able to enable these functions back for call/message block samsung left so much code in, the only thing I had to do was 1) enable the function to be seen in settings.apk by editing an xml, was quite surprised that was all that was needed, and it worked 50% out of the gate.. the call blocking was working fine, but if you wanted to add a custom person for messaging you would get a F/C..
So I dug apart an ATT SG3 SecMms.apk and found the missing smali code (this took WAY longer than I should have ever spent on lol) and it was literally such a small amount of code I couldn't believe it, Samsung did the bear minimum to remove this stuff rather than deleting all of the code they left it half done. Same deal for blocking mode, this one was harder, as I couldn't find a way to get it to show in the settings.apk without changing things that I felt should not be changed.
again, I had to tear into the ATT applications and find this missing smali code.
I knew it would work as if you flashed the SecPhone + SecConacts.apk you have blocking mode working 100% but I didn't want to use ATT files.. so what I had to do was 1) narrow down the hundreds of smali files and to the ones I thought would find the code in.
I think I spent like, somewhere around 40 hours getting these two functions to work properly on VZW with 100% VZW applications.
so, as to why we have S-Pen coding, Lazy Samsung.

Export apns?

Santod said he did a lot work on the apns for the leak. Is there a way to export those files and insert into other roms, namely aosp or aokp?
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk 2
I think they can be. I think it is a text file.
Sent from my Thunderbolt using Tapatalk 2
You can pull the apn.conf by using adb.
adb pull /system/etc/apn.conf
Sent from my Nexus 7
You can pull, edit, and add all the APN's in the world to the apn-conf.xml, but without those same APN's compiled into the framework, it's of no use.
They need to match what's in the framework. Without this, it's a useless text file.
In ICS importing them is a real pain and almost impossible if they aren't already cooked in.
There is a Tweakker ICS APN app that is out and supposedly does a good job.
Haven't actually gotten around to finding a copy and trying to see if it will work on our Bolts.
It's in the Play Store, but without tinkering, states it's incompatible with our device.
So anyway, this is why I went through so much effort to add 3,500 APNs and to bake them in.

Probems noticed with - JellyBelly Omega-Total Customization-CM10

Since I can't post to the dev thread, I'm forced to post it here.
Latest version - JellyBelly Omega-Total Customization-CM10 (unofficial)[Updated 1/28/13]
No Flash or Flash is broken - tested using w w w .adobe.com/products/about-flash.html
Voice Search crashes out of the box. Had to do an update from the market to get it to work.
Wifi throughput is poor. Using the prior release, I could easily get 20mbit, now I can't get over 5mbit.
I read through the entire thread, and didn't see this...
Would like to request the modified contactsprovider.apk be included. I know I can do it myself, but would be nice if it worked out of the box.
There was one more thing, but it slipped my mind now. I reverted to MikShiftedG for usability. This thing is so close, it hurts!!
If I missed anything... kindly let me know. That was a very long thread to read over. I do appreciate the work that has been done so far!

It might help to install adobe flash if you want flash. I included it in v6 but left it out here because we stripped it down as much as possible. I did absolutely nothing that would effect WiFi from the previous version. If anything it should be faster. Did you flash the patch?

Thanks for the info. Was going off what I read in your OP. Didn't see that Flash got stripped out, or my memory buffers dumped that info.

I didn't test it, just noticed it said cm10.1 at the top. Not saying it doesn't work, but it might not work for everybody... Those are the kind of things you gotta think about when putting together a ROM. You want to use the most stable stuff so you don't have to tell people how to fix this and that all day long. But glad you got most of it sorted out. I think we got all your problems covered. BTW Flash is not actually included in any JB ROM (without the dev putting it in there) because it was dropped in favor of HTML5 (Thank the iTurd). I put it in previous versions cuz I know a lot of people still use it... But it is a bit of a space hog. You should be getting close to your ten posts now tho.
Yes, you did. I'm foaming at the mouth at the idea of having this run full time. I really love it!
My work environment uses flash heavily, thus I still have continuing need for it. The installation of Flash shouldn't cause a general slowdown of the device though, just to make sure?
One last question then. Is there a recommended contactsprovider apk for CM 10, or more specifically one that will work with your build?
Sorry for being noobish. I understand the basics and some advanced stuff, but all the naming conventions and numbering schemes kinda messes me up.
Thanks for being responsive to my questions! As someone who hasn't a clue to what it takes to build one of these, I'm sure my suggestions and comments can seem naive. I don't mean them to be tho!

I would rather you learn than keep asking the same things over and over.
Here is something to help you out with the naming conventions:
Sense is the UI your phone shipped with. AOSP (Android Open Source Project) is what JellyBelly is. Most AOSP ROMs are based on one of a few different works. CyanogenMod (CM) is one of them. AOKP and Evervolv are a few others. AOSP is stripped of any of the phone manufacturers UIs (Touchwiz, Sense, MotoBlur, LG UI, etc). Basically what the Nexus phones are shipped with. Although the UIs can be added back in to an extent when making a ROM. For example I made a MotoBlur ICS ROM for the Shift from AOSP.
CM7=2.3 or GingerBread. CM9=4.0 or Ice Cream Sandwich. CM10=4.1 or Jelly Bean. CM10.1=4.2 which is the newest, most current version of Jelly Bean from the Nexus 4.
No flash shouldn't cause any slowdown, like I said I just removed it for space. And for the contactsprovider.apk, no i don't have a recommendation but if that other one works for you... Go with it! It's your ROM, set it up how you want... That was kinda the theme of Omega... To give the maximum amount of control and options to the user. hope all this helps.
Here's a link that I have referred to quite often: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CyanogenMod After your read about halfway through the article, under 'Version history', click 'expand' to see a very handy reference table. Using this, you can narrow down the flashable ROMs to certain Android/CM versions.

You might install Kernel Tuner & Seeder & once set up she gets REALLY smooth. Also, once I flash Gapps I will go to advanced & wipe Dalvik & set permissions before booting back up. It's always seemed to help tame a rambunctious ROM.
Something else I discovered a couple of ROMs ago is Deep Sleep Battery Saver. I installed it & set it to "Aggressive" & am sitting on 67% at 16 hours with about an hour screen time & an hour phone calls. It DOES work & make a difference.

I swear one of these days I don't have much going on I'm gonna sync and source build a thing or two. But my time is so limited right now.
I almost had sabermod built but said something about missing the makefile and then I got busy so I just trashed that source so I didn't have any hiccups building for the N4.

Strapped, that is the very one I ALMOST installed on the wife's Nexus Sunday. But I opted for RootBox at the last minute since it was several versions further along than the one I ported. You're going to have to teach me a few things about building from source too. I've decided to take my desktop & make it a dedicated build server here REAL soon. It can sit in the bedroom & compile away while I'm messing with the laptop.
How's the kernel experimentation been going?

Well SaberMOD is one of the top optimized ROMs we mako users have, along with sparksco kernel, so usually what I do is just cherry-pick stuff in and compile his kernel with whatever it is I kang elsewhere lol.
Some of the recent cherry-picks broke the compile so I got to keep at it because its adding options visible to the user without interfering with how the kernel performs.
I'm almost out of room on the partition I installed Ubuntu on, so I'm thinking of trying to run it from one of them 1TB portable drives, and never worry again.
Building JellyBean takes a lot of space, hell the source alone is like 10-12GB to download, then there is something about needing 80GB for a set of builds ( I'm guessing multiple devices ) blah blah.
Right now sparksco has blessed us with absolutely everything needed to build, right down to build scripts that you just run, choose a couple options then build.
I mostly find myself just flipping through the source though, looking at the massive amounts of files and trying to get an understanding of how source is structured in terms of where -X- file is located for SystemUI before its built so I can edit source level. Starting small with what's already there and hopefully I can learn way more in the process

Good Grief it takes a lot of system just to start! I DO have plenty of HD space on the desktop though. I'm going to have to do some research & get more involved VERY soon myself. Hey, Weekends, thanks for another yummy one!
I've got two other family phones on different versions of PacMan, but this one is even better! I'm having a great time playing with it. I love the "Permissions" menu in "settings," for one.
Sorry to ask, but could you help me find how to turn on the navbar? I found a lot of navbar settings, but there's no "Enable Bar" check box/button/radio.
I also found a problem that probably dates back a long time. At least I remember having it in ROMs I tried a long time ago: "Settings > Storage" FCs. I believe there was no cure, but there were workarounds.
I haven't loaded it up with all the apps I usually do, but so far it's great. After wiping, fixing permissions, booting between flashes, etc., I've had no problems at all.
Again, THANK YOU!
(I'm also having a heck of a time reading the small fonts on the settings menus. But, then again, that's why God invented optometrists!)

Hey Strapped, good to hear from you!
It's been a while.
LOL! ME TOO! My eyes aren't as young as they used to be and that about the only thing I DON'T like about the Paranoid side of PACMan. I set my font to huge & just grin and bear it bro. You can get some bigger in the apps by tinkering with the dpi but the internal functions seem to be a bit different since the default is a tablet format. I COULD be wrong though But am still playing around with it too.
As the Storage function goes, I've always written that one off as one of the things that AOPK & CM10.1 can't agree on & they just say the heck with it. If you CAN find a workaround...or if I do...Let's please share it & I'll serve it up in the OP.
Let me check on the NavBar thing.....
After taking an in depth look myself, I can't find it either Jesterfell. But it could be that it just wasn't put in there because it conflicted somehow with pie. It DOES work really well in this one so you might just use that as your replacement. I COULD make you a flashable fix that will put that line of code into build.prop that activates the NavBar. OR, you could add it yourself. Your call buddy....just let me know.
Tried this ROM today
Gotta say, i dont like that side of paranoid too xD
Well, besides that i personally didnt find any glitches so far, but somehow i dont like the ROM itselve at all :/
Thanks for the port though, could take a peek xD

Now that you mention it, I do remember reading that PIE had to be turned off for the navbar to work. I didn't find a way to do that either--probably a compromise choice had to be made to leave both settings out.
Embarrassingly, I forget PIE is there, LOL! Another problem is that, after a while of use, I somehow managed to get it to rotate counterclockwise just enough so that the "BACK" button is off the screen. I don't think that should even be possible!?
Then again, I did manage to turn OFF the search button in pie by checking the settings box as if I wanted to turn it ON!
I did remember an old workaround that's doing the job for now: I re-mapped the "SEARCH" hard key as another "BACK" key.

Thanks, Weekends. I appreciate the offer.
I tried the "qemu.hw.mainkeys=0" line, but it didn't do anything. Is there another mod for navbar?
Like I said, though, it's still too much fun to put down--especially now that I've got my wife's phone to play with. That still leaves mine as the DD!

I can't find my notes on it, but thinking back on it, I don't think there was a real workaround. It was just a way to turn on USB storage by tapping the "USB connected" bar in notifications, and choosing storage there.
Now I can't even find a "USB connected" notification! There's a debugging notice, but no connected one... I really have to learn to stop changing things BEFORE I break something!

I'd say you could download the one you like best. The "cLock" one is the one that comes with it (see 1st screenshot) The others are from "one more clock" which I downloaded. But they just scratch the surface of the over 30 that you can choose from.

Conversion i9505 to i9505G - Discussion/Rant

I'm not smart enough to do it myself.. however, I am still amazed that no one has been able to work out how to convert an i9505 into a i9505G. I know the partition layout is different, and I also know that there are ported 4.3 GE roms available.. BUT all of that aside.. has Samsung won the war here?
Which leads me to a separate subject.. but.. their knox efuse.. while it hasn't been long.. it looks like they have won there as well.
In any case.. I'm more interested in the conversion to i9505G. Does anyone know more than I do about the status or possibility of ever being able to convert a i9505 to a i9505G?
Well.. This is not as easy as you may think.
Need someone who has both I9505 and I9505G. Also need special connection to I9505 like JTAG to get direct access to flash. Then using JTAG try to dump whole flash from I9505G and upload it to I9505. And then depend on success and whole result, procedure can be simplified.
But JTAG is required at experiment stage if you are not so rich who can afford to buy tens (if not hundred) I9505 while experimenting
A full conversion (think about bootloader, radio) is not possible.
Samsung secured the bootloader very agressively .

People said a reset of the flash counter was not possible.. @Chainfire was able to take care of that just fine..
I doubt it's impossible.. but I wonder how many people have even tried, or if there are even more than a handful of people with the skills needed to make this happen.

Thats very sad to hear, would this mean we will never have a full ported/working edition of google on our phones? shall I sell my phone and move to a nexus? or simply buy the original i9505G?

I sold my AT&T SGH-I337 GS4 and got an I-9505G. Best decision I ever made.

I couldn't care less about running ROMs. I unlocked the bootloader but otherwise I leave my devices stock and unrooted. I know how to root and install ROMs but once I knew how, my curiosity was satisfied.
Honestly, I have had Nexus devices my entire Android life. I decided to branch out and try a GS4 with Touchwiz. I really liked my I337, so much in fact, that I also ended up purchasing a Galaxy Note 8.0 as well. There are definitely things in Touchwiz that I'd love to see Google add to the stock user experience. I'm referring to things like air view and having separate wallpapers for the home and lock screens. Alas, though, when you've used stock Android as much as I have, it's hard to use anything else.
The only thing I truly miss about Touchwiz is the camera app. The camera was simply amazing. The other things that are important to me, namely the IR blaster and the S-View cover functionality, both work flawlessly on the I9505G.

What i dislike most in stock Android is halo theme. It's really ugly. Micro check-boxes. Ugly seek-bars. Alert dialogs are too flat and sketchy. Halo theme looks more like concept than theme for daily usage.
TouchWiz theme was odd originally in time of SGS2, but it was getting better and better. On SGS4 it's nearly perfect. May be some elements like ViewPager and title bar need to reworks somehow. But overall it's way better theme than Halo. Also, there are many useful addons in TW ROM like quick settings panel, nice looking lock screen with quick launch shortcuts on the bottom, and other small tweaks making TW ROM much more useful than naked Android. And it's easier to remove unneeded apps/services/tweaks from TW ROM than add them into naked Android.
I would think about I9505G over I9505 only as device with bigger user storage running custom TW ROM, but it looks like not much success here.
From other side, you can buy 32GB version of I9505 and don't think about 16GB-only I9505G.
But hey, there are SHV-E330 and GT-I9506 already

You mean Holo I believe. That's why I use stock Android. TW with its different colors, big buttons that are not even separated from others and mixed styles in applications is really crazy and a pain to use. For people that like to use a phone without distractions it's a plain and simple fail.
Nice to have options as we're all not the same, you keep your TW phone, I will keep my stock Android one.

Yeah.. It looks like your are really serious talking about replace TW features by 3rd party apps
Which app can replace lockscreen? None. It's impossible by android design. Only can mask some app as lockscreen which is completely different.
Having quick settings panel in on-going notification area? Phh..
If you think, it's not serious, then hold on and think first. May be other person, who is talking about this, knows something you don't know.
I'm not even talking about how serious people who are buying non-Nexus device and then whining about CM/AOSP in half of topics.

You're considering rooting a device to freeze/remove system applications. I was talking about simply adding applications to a stock Android from Google Play. I fail to see the former being easier.
And here the "impossible":
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.teslacoilsw.widgetlocker&hl=en
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.j4velin.notificationToggle&hl=en
In any case what you might consider essential I might consider a waste of resources.
That was the point of my post. That's why Android is a success.
And if you don't like to read people talking about changing non-Google devices you might be better off XDA.
XDA Developers was founded for developers by developers. It is now a valuable resource for people who want to make the most of their mobile devices, from customizing the look and feel to adding new functionality.

If you are able to create custom ROM then removing unneeded apps (and even editing framework to cleanup from some useless features) is much easier than add absent functionality.
I suppose, we are on XDA, i.e. developer's forum right? If you are talking from regular user point of view who usually don't know what is "root", then it's out of scope of this board. Just buy Nexus device and then you are set.

I've told you already: there is no way to truly replace lockscreen by any other application. Lockscreen is a part of framework, not APK. I'm using android devices not the first year, and believe me, i've tried these apps long long time ago. These apps mimic lockscreen using some security holes in OS, but they are not replacing lockscreen. Actually, device remains unlocked all the time. Also there are many bugs and glitches because such apps trying to suppress original lockscreen with different kinds of success/fail.
As for modifying device: there are many ways to modify and it's not exactly by installing CM/AOSP. You can check my topics to see that i'm not just user.
XDA has been created long time before CM/AOSP and believe me there are many other good ways to modify the device. CM/AOSP have their own dedicated forums and repositories which should suit your needs better than XDA (if you want to compete in pointing directions to others).
P.S.: look into I9505G forum to see how users begging to add samsung's standard camera app which doesn't work on non-TW ROM.
Suggest them to install some app from Google play
The same can tell about video player and amount of video and audio codecs integrated into TW ROM. On TW ROM i can use nearly any music player and able to playback almost any audio and video. On GE ROM you have to find special audio player having support of some specific format, and then try to get used to its bugs without choice to switch to another player. With video player it's even worse...
Also, CM/AOSP usually don't have tight integration when it comes to Hardware 3D acceleration. Some selected devices (usually Nexus and GE devices) have good 3D support, but only some.
The truth is: Some people wanna to install CM/AOSP and then they realize they miss many useful (usually not noticeable when it presents) features. That's why custom TW ROMs are present and have a lot or users.

I never denied that TW based ROMs have value for some people, just that as well stock Android is much more attractive for others. If not we wouldn't be discussing this and you wouldn't see the kind of activity we see in this forum.
And I still disagree on the "easier" issue but I fail to see any benefit in continuing the discussion.

Look at the window?
So this really isn't going anywhere?
HTC One has just been fully converted into the GPe.
I was really hoping there was some kind of solution for this conversion
Anyway, thanks for all the hard work guys!

Why would you need to ? You have CM/TW/GE to choose from when using the i9505 partition layout. Took us a couple of hours to get KitKat after the GE got it (broodplank delivered AOSP 4.4 even earlier).

Lack of TW development for Marshmallow

Is it just me or is there an extreme lack of development for the s5. If your or sprint there is no longer an official cm13, and so far i not seen even a hint of a new MOAR based on Marshmallow. I have been using custom roms for years and i have never seen interest in a phone die so fast

There is a s7 port rom based on mm for our phone in the Galaxy so four not the sprint one. There are few minor bugs like small and data bugs and fingerprint to name to few major ones but the ron works good for the most part as people who are on sprint are saying there. Once a full tar version of the pca rom gets uploaded to sammobile , I'm pretty sure will see more development

Being marshmallow just came out, it'll be a few before developers will work on something. It takes more than a few days to make one.
Considering that Wanum is already working on the newish APK... Exposed, X TouchWiz. Not bad seeing how there are so many that are still waiting on it....
Had mine for a few weeks...
MOAR devs moved to Note 5. It is up a running and maintained by td. Our luck will be any dev which like free phones. Wanam is doing a great job with Xtouchwiz. Also an user made a version optimized for G5 find it in Page 25-27. Xtouchwiz 1.0.1 for GS5.

Without a doubt, compared to the S2/E4GT which preceded my s5, and especially the very weak entry-level LG Optimus S which preceded that. Especially for the latter there were more custom ROMs available than I had time to try.

It's been opined elsewhere that this is because the Sprint SGS5 is made for only one country. But it's still odd. After all, we have a population of over 310M and the S5 is a popular phone.

I agree. I wish there was more for this phone. Even just a port from the S7 or S6 honestly. Maybe we all need to make our own rom lol

Great tip! It took me some time to find the threads but Wanam Xtouchwiz is excellent. It allows the 2 things on my rooted, stock Android 6.0.1 Sprint Galaxy S5 that I wanted most...
1) It disables the headset volume warning. (None of the other modules I tried succeeded in that task.)
2) It lets me run split-screen/multi-window on apps (like Waze) that don't appear in the "Multi Window" options menu (when you long-press the "back" button). Waze still doesn't appear as a Multi Window option in the menu, but if I launch Waze, and then long-press the "back" button, I get the option to layer on other apps, like Pandora. So now I can run Waze & Pandora split-screen. Very happy.

FireFD's version of Xtouchwiz apparently has a few more features and was tuned for the Galaxy S5, but since I have no technical knowledge to peruse the source or compile it, and since I don't know FireFD's reputation, I'm a bit leery of trying FireFD's version.
Android 6.0.1 + Xposed + Xtouchwiz (+ maybe XBlast) is so good that I really feel no motivation to hassle with installing a custom ROM. I'm donating to Wanam.

What are some examples of things that work better with Firefd's? I didn't notice anything not-working on Wanam's.
