Unlocking/updating/TMobile - HTC Inspire 4G

Hi Gang,
My wife has one of these phones , it's unlocked and she is using it on TMobile.
The other day my S3 updated to 4.1.2 and she was like " why dont I get software updates" ( she's still on gingerbread - 2.3 I think ). I told her "cos you are using a ATT phone on TMobile "
My question - If we update the software will the phone have to be unlocked again or once unlocked always unlocked ? Make any sense ? I hope so.
Thanks for the help !

What is her software version exactly? HTC only updated this phone through GB; it never got ICS officially.

I'm not sure if you're asking or telling me that that's not ICS, but if you're asking, no, it's not. Just a GB update.

2.3.3 Android
2.1 Sense
is her current versions

The Inspire was never officially updated to JB. the last update was 3.20.502.52 and that was from ATT. This phone was never released as a unlock version. And who ever had it before you probably got a code from ATT to unlock it or 3rd party. Unless the phone was unlocked through a root method. If you want to know if the phone is rooted, just Hold the power button and volume down button when you start the phone. Look for S-Off, on the menu.
The difference between what you have and what was released is supposed to be better battery life, new radio, and new sense. It doesnt seem its worth updating to new software. If you are able to root it, then you have more options.

There is an update for the phone to version 2.3.5 gingerbread and sense version 3.0. You can download from HTC website. However, as mentioned above rooting may be the way to go. This phone was never officially supported past version 2.3.5.

[Q] My DS Software Version

I got my DS from taiwan and Im wondering is it normal that my sofware number is 1.31.950.2. When I check for software updates it says my phone is up to date.. But when I check the forum. Lots of people have there DS software number/versions in 1.47.61.1. My phone is s-on and has not been rooted, it is still running stock htc sense.
Well, mine is 1.48.707.1 and I think updates for each country are not at the same time?

This was a very minor update, just firmware, not Android or HTC Sense, so it may not be therein all regions. Also, it screwed the Wi-Fi signal, so you're better off without it.....

[Q] Froyo------>Gingerbread BUT!!!!

Ok So back in the day I used the ace hack kit so I was happily on froyo me specs are:
Android Version 2.2.1
Kernel Version 2.6.32.21-g3c08447
Software Number Inspired DHD AFR003
so now as I remember I did the s-off rooted and unlocked but need to go back to stock firmware (IDK just want it) so att made the update to gingerbread so my question is:
If I update like the way the htc page tells me to will it brick my phone ?
and if not what do I have to do?
ive just been out of it and im a little back behind but I find posts with other things than this thanks in advance guys!
Check out this thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1208507
It has all the instructions and tools you need to return to stock.
but I cant just execute the htc update and what would happen my main concern is messing up my phone by just updating to the official Gingerbread I am on still on the same specs
Yes you can just flash the gingerbread ruu. You will be stock but still have soff which is fine unless you were going to do some kind of warranty claim then I would suggest gong son aswell

Do you mean the OTA update, or the RUU from HTC's website? If the former, then no, you can't unless you are running a rock-stock froyo ROM (it will abort before doing anything). If the latter, then yes, you can run it, but it will wipe everything.

thats the file I really dont care of the features I use im just wondering if i'll mess up my phone plus I just want to know what ill keep and what ill lose in terms of the s-off and I know ill lose the unlock

Flashing ghe htc OTA update while you are S-Off will not work. Found this out the hard way back when I first started messing with phones
You can un root your phone and put S-On and update it to gingerbread but I don't think you'll be able to root it as I believe the hack kit requires you to downgrade firmware anyway.
Best bet is to just flash a gingerbread rom. If your trying to keep sense I would suggest the rom virtuous unity.
Has sense 3.0 with a load of new features and is gingerbread I believe.
Either way, best of luck. Hope this helps

[Q] Reasons for RUU not working?

I took my HTC One S to the HTC Care shop to flash the Stock ROM. After 3 hours when I returned back the guy told me No cant do with no explanation. He said there was some hardware issue. I had handed over the phone with OEM relocked. After getting it back I restored it back to the backup of I had and looks like as it was when I had given it to them.
I have not faced any issues with the phone, just wanted to update the version from 4.0.3 to 4.0.4. I do not have my stock backup.
What are the known causes a RUU not working? I am planning on getting the RUU from someone on the forum but do want to get the wrong version or something. My specs are in my signature. If someone can tell me what exactly I need to look for when getting an RUU. Also does the HBOOT need to be the same that you own or can be higher to flash?
I am thinking that the idiots at HTC do not have the right ROM and hence asking me to deposit the phone in order to cover their own tracks. But thats just being hopeful. Can anyone help??

If you can root then you could SuperCID which would let you use any RUU.

There is no S-OFF on HOS. The process for SuperCID is not out for HTC One S (S3). The posts have been quite explicit that the process mentioned will brick this version.

I had a similar problem a couple months ago. I tried almost every RUU available but luckily i managed to find one that worked, its called "OTA_Ville_U_ICS_40_S_HTC_Europe_2.31.401.5-1.78.401.2_release_275773ape8z1mahr0gt8fg". What a mouthful right lol, i'm not 100% sure it'll work for you because you have an S3 chip but it's worth a try. You can find it on filefactory and btw make sure your bootloader is locked.
Hope this helps

Well considering that its rooted and on a custom ROM do I still have the right to demand a replacement. Plus the service center ppl say it will take a month for them to get a verdict back. So was hoping to exhaust all options before taking the final step.

I just don't see how you going to do it if they can't. Try getting them to try again and if they still can't get it to work then have them send it off. Or just not care about it and update to a rom that has 4.0.4.

As you can see its totally effed up!

Did you do it after upgrading your stock to 4.0.4 or before it? Cuz last time I checked you CAN NOT use a custom 4.0.4 based ROM on a 4.0.3 based HOS. There is an HBOOT conflict. Anyways there are practically only 2 ROMs available for the HTC One S (S3). The TD v4 gives me bootloops (tried and failed) and the other is mcOneS3 which I havent tried but have in good faith that I WONT WORK before! reference to post #8
So if you have found a workaround I am all ears, (eyes in this case)!!

well just waiting for a 4.0.4 nandroid from someone to see if that works. else will personally ask football for an RUU.
Your One S must be having a higher hboot version than their RUU at htc service centre. Downgrade your hboot version to stock for RUU to work properly.

So If I have a RUU with correct CID but a higher HBOOT version I am good to go??
The hboot version of the RUU should be the same or higher than you currently have in order for it to work. The CID should also be the same that is _038 in our case. If you find a suitable RUU please post a link to the upload, we Indians are in a dire need of an RUU.

you bet. I have spoken to football and he says it can be obtained, but at a price! So making sure that I get the right one. Also just heard that we may be getting JB sometime in future. Shot a mail to HTC today to see when it will be available. Lets see!! If they say more than 3 months then might as well get that bloody RUU. Hating this disabled feeling.
PS: are you on One S too?? Are you rooted? if so can you upload me your stock backup??????

There are no official 4.2 update for sensation and seems it will not get it at all. If you want fresh Android version you can consider to buy another phone nexus4 for example. Personaly I will never buy htc phone ever.

Hi,

If you are rooted, you can get a version of it in the dev section.

i mean if you want to flash an ICS 4.0.3 rom or ics firmware you have to be rooted first
and surely S-OFF for the ics firmware
Rooted is basically unlocking your phone and bypassing HTC security so that you can flash unofficial firmware and ROMs
Check in the Android Developing area for ROMs... IMO The 4.2 roms aren't running great as of yet...Still new technology for this phone...Give them some time. There is a great ROM I just came across today and tried that is OpenSensation - the latest 2.27.13 build. It looks just like the 4.2 roms (I've already flashed most of them) but it runs amazing on this phone. Its a 4.0.4 build and its simply fantastic. I would give it a try if I was you. Mind you, you will need to root your phone if you already haven't as well as get a recovery such as CWM (clock work manager).

You'll most likely be able to root and S-OFF your phone if you took it but as always it's best to do that BEFORE you take OTA's, or even better wait until someone elses does and see if anyone complains of not being able to S-OFF. Down side is you won't be able to take the OTA's at all after rooting and doing S-OFF, you could still manually flash them but not take them from the software update section of your ROM.
Thanks may I ask which OTA are you i dont heard about OTA is comming out till mid september
