The other day I picked up a set of Munitio 9mm tactical IEMs for my s4. They're intended for apple iphone/ipod/iPad only. The microphone works on the S4. People can hear me through it. The answer end clicker works except volume up or down. My Bose AEi, mic works too.
I wonder if other apple only headphones work with S4.. figured we could all post what works and what doesn't?
(I did do a search to see if this has been raised couldn't find anything. If it has. I apologize)

There are no such things as "apple only" headphones.
They are merely approved by Apple to be designed for iPods and iPhones
They should all work with any device.
Wonder if the OP is blond?
I'm referring to the microphone. For apple devices the third and fourth are reversed so its ground then mic not mic then ground.
The headphones microphone won't work on other android devices also.

Better not mix Apple and Samsung together, Apple might sue the pants off ya.
I dont think it matters which order its in.
Every band has its meaning
Plug with single - Mono
Plug with Two - Stereo
Plug with Three - Headphone/AV/Mic + Stereo
Its all marketing tactics to move more product. Everything is the same. If you say something is apple compatible of course the hipsters will flock to it instead of another headset that wasn't saying it was compatible but is. They need their ilife to be easy and everything blatantly shoved in their faces to figure things out

I know that the 3 bands are set up as left channel, right channel, mic, ground. On apple the mic and ground are switched. But I noticed not all istuff works the beats don't and the monsters don't and also the skull candy's don't. But the others I tried do. I was just making an observation. This is absolutely wrong. Yes the headphones will play sound, however the mic and other buttons may not work.
For example;
Klipsch S4i & Klipsch S4a
the "i" is for Apple devices, and when used on some android devices the mic and buttons dont work. The "a" is intended for Android devices and the mic and buttons dont work on Apple devices.

ANDROID inline controls are designed differently from Apple; there is an extra resistor.
You should look for headsets that are Android specific.

I totally agree one should look for Android specific headsets but the munitio nines, I really enjoy their sound. Not to bass heavy but its there and amazing mids to highs with good seperation for in the ear. They have a better soundstage IMO then some $300+ ones ive used. In some cases there's better in ear sets for apple than for Android

I tried Nokia headsets, 1 stand alone nokia with headband kind of headset and 1 headset from Nokia N8. There is something wrong with Nokia headsets since when i use them theres a channel thats way too low on volume. Its like a listening to 5.1 setup with 3 dead speakers.
Volume doesnt work. I havent tried the mic though but with the audio quality issue i didnt bother testing it.

It seems that people are having compatibility issues with headphones working on the g2x. I thought it would be nice if there was a thread where people can list what headphones work and those that don't. I can verify that the buttons do not work on the klipsch image s2 and the headphones that came with the nexus s.

Just got my Zagg SmartBuds, and they all functions work perfectly, from volume control to answering/ending calls. PLUS they not only sound great, but w/all the sliders I can keep the cord from going rogue on me. They also came w/4 additional [5 total] ear bud adapters to fit different ear sizes.
I was worried, but I figured [since I bought them during the 50% off sale] worst case scenario I got a gift for my girls iPhone. Was a win-win, depending on how you look at it, more of a win for me.

Yeah, I have the Klipsch Image S5i headset and the play button works to start/stop music and answer/hang-up calls but the + & -- buttons don't do anything.
The Image S5i's are designed for Apple products, I have compared the 3.5mm tip connections and they are the same configuration layout that I need for my G2x, but there is obviously something different in the command structure to activate functions.
I love the quality of sound from the S5i's and they are more rugged than the Image S4's I have. I am crossing my fingers that someone will come out with an app that will allow all the functions to work. I found one on the Android market that looked promising -- but it only works with Gingerbread, and I am running Froyo (rooted), so we may just have to wait a little longer for the compatability/upgrade to be introduced in order to get the headsets fully operational (hope it is very soon).
I use my iPod earphones.. the mic works great and so does the play/pause/skip control, the only thing that doesn't work is the volume up/down

i bought the Jaybirdgear sportsband. they are more useful for people who excercise but they work great. all buttons work as well as mic
If you have Mortplayer Music, give it a try.
I can do play/pause (one press), next (two rapid press), previous (three rapid press) with Audio Technica iphone headset adapter.
Anyone tried the nexus one headphones with the g2x? Pause/play works but next/previous track buttons don't with stock player, winamp, or poweramp.

Looking for some decent/quality earphones that has a working end call/pickup buttons and volume rocker for this phone. Does anyone have suggestions?
I listen to almost anything, but mainly R&B and hiphop. Thanks
Meelectronics has good, cheap solutions that actually sound very good.

It would help if you listed a budget, since headphones can go from $2 to thousands of dollars very easily.
All you need to know: Shure
I think I would say the absolute highest id pay is like 100. But that's a little steep. I'm aiming for around 30-40 and quality. just seeing what's a good bang for your buck that would certainly be an upgrade to cheapo stock iPhone ones. And The samsung ones the phone came with, the left earbud stopped working a couple days ago. And I haven't even played it that loud.
Thanks for the suggestions

My bad, I totally missed out on the volume control part of your original post... The Shure's I have don't have controls, but I know they have a version that has it. Not sure if it works though.
The Sennheisers do not have controls.
V-Moda is another brand that I think does well with hip-hop music, and I know they have phones that have controls on the wires.
Yup - if you were looking for generic headphone ideas I'd be able to help, but the volume/call control/mic stuff leads to "no clue".
In my opinion, Skullcandy headphones with Comply foam eartips provide great "bang for the buck" but I have no idea whether their call control features work with our phones. My Skullcandy Titans are plain vanilla "listen only" units.

Those don't work with Android apparently for the controls. They just released these for that very purpose.
But yeah, on a budget, you can't beat these earbuds for sound quality.
The one that came with the phone dont do it for you? im on the same boat as you music wise and after im done listening to music i need some time to recuperate my hearing back. sounds all smuffled.
what im saying is that the ones that come with the phone are fine. good bass. i really like them.
I have iBeats, and really like them but the volume rocker does not work. would be nice if it did
you wont find volume rocker support, just a single button where the function depends on the app. i think it has to do with android not having a set standard on pin-out so the app developers dont write these things in (there are i think 4 posible pinouts, 2 posible ground loop locations of those pinouts, the i9000 and vibrant are different from and completely incompatable with the captivate and infuse do to a different ground loop location, not sure which standard the other sgs devices use..) you need a single button set of headphones with a mic that is compatable with the iphone, not the vibrant/i9000.
i hear that dennon makes amazing headphones in the <$40 range. year shure and klipsh and etymotics are great but for what you are looking for the dennons are about the best in that price range. dont go with the ibeats monster doesnt know jack about headphones and all there products are grossely overprices, i bought them out of curiosity and yeah they're loud, have nice packaging and good build quality but the sound isnt so impressive.

If you are willing to spend $50 then I'd recommend the Plantronics BackBeat 903+. They are bluetooth with builtin working call controls, pause/play button (tested and works with pandora and music player apps), and volume control buttons.
Yes they are pricey but with all those features and being completely wireless (minus the cord that connects the 2 ear pieces) they are well worth it. The sound quality is awesome IMO.
Edit: Here'e the link for them on Amazon.

looks cool, never tried. but even this app doesn't add volume rocker support. it is not a feature availible on android as far as i know. this app interperates the single button press and relays the command to android. volume control is accomplished by a long press or something.
but i can confirm that you want apple compatible headphones, just ones with a single button, not 3! the ground ring and control ring are identical to the iphone. do not buy headphones labeled for the galaxy s if there is such a thing. att must have spec'd the headphones to be iphone compatible to ensure there headsets for the iphone would work. there are atleast 4 standards for pinouts and the european sgs and the vibrant and others use a different standard.

Greetings Everyone,
So ill just be out right. I hate apple, however when i saw the ad for the new iPhone earbuds I was intrigued. Normal ear buds that go down in your ear canal hurt my ear and my brain. So i went on amazon and ordered some. They are AMAZING, however the mic will not work on our phone. Thanks to apple only supporting their mobile devices. I have found a way to get the mic to work tho. You have to have the mic mute button pressed the entire time before you plug in the head set and while the head set is plugged in.....maybe they use a normally closed switch I don't really know. I did not tear them apart and check it with a logic probe.
I will attach some photos of what i have done to make this work its super easy haha.

So I connected my apple in-ear headphones as u suggested, the mic does work but then the main button stops being recognized by cell. Also I noticed that the mic of my cell also remains on while I'm on a call...:silly:
Any way we can have a sw that does this trick for us and then fixes the cell mic on while earbuds plugged in... this is more of a standards difference that apple makes as part of their monopoly....
They are pain because of this monopoly

That is because it is a 3 pin lead which is why when u press the mic button the sound seems to work.
U can also make it work by only letting 2 pins out of the 3 on ur jack inside the headfone socket.
Note: You may need to adjust it here and there for it work but it does the job.

I have an older pair without the controls and can say the sound quality is the the best for any earbuds under $200. I know the initial pair they made for android got some mixed reviews because of the software, but I'm more then willing to bet they've got it worked out at this point. Plus if you order them through amazon you could always return them.

Because of the way the iPhone-specific headphones are hard-wired, the volume buttons will not work on the S4. The center button + mic works fine on most iPhone-specific headphones. I have the Sol Republic Tracks HD - the center button + mic works, volume buttons do not work.
Try looking at the thread here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2104171
It says Galaxy S3 but I recently bought the Sony XBA 2VP on sale (it has a volume wheel instead of buttons). Works like a charm on my S4.
I would suggest the in-ear Shure SE535's... if you have that kind of money to drop and want phenomenal sound if you're an audiophile like me. The Shure SE535's are $500 but they are very well worth it. They are made in the USA as a triple driver (1 driver for highs, 1 for lows & 1 for bass) earphone. They come in clear or bronze colors, they come with an Android or Apple-specific (separate) mic cable, in-ear fitment sleeves made of foam, soft silicone, and triple-flange earplug-type sleeves. There's also an included case to put these earphones inside and you put them in your ear by way of behind, over-the-top of your ear, then inside your ear. Using the triple-flange sleeves makes the best fit out of the fitments included but you can buy a custom fit-kit for $150 for these earphones to be made to fit only your ears. With this separate puchased kit your local specialized audio/music shop can make a mold of your ear to further customize these earphones to make them more like the inner-ear personal monitoring system professional music artists use (which those systems start at about $1,000 I think).
If you want to go even further in your pursuit of audio perfection, you can wait for Shure to come out with their SE846's within the next couple weeks. These new 846's are going to be priced at $1,000 in the clear color, they'll be quad-driver driven, interchangeable yet customizable frequency response tubes, noise cancelling up to 37dB and so much more!
http://www.shure.com/americas/produ.../se-earphones/se846-sound-isolating-earphones
I used to have the Shure SE215's and they were good until I heard the 535's. I also had the in-ear Bose earphones and almost every in-ear type made by Sony, Philips, Sennheiser, and Skullcandy. The problem with all those other brand in-ear earphones is they NEVER stay in when playing fast-paced sports like racquetball, running, going off-road mountain biking and doing other jerky movements... they can never create a full seal around the inner ear and the weight of each earphone side (L & R) are heavy so they end up falling out of your ear. But seriously, you haven't heard quality until you've heard them through Shure's higher-end SE models.

He requires in line control.
This is rare in true "high-end" IEMs.
His best option is probably the klipsch like the other guy has mentioned.
The mic cable has an in-line control built inside it for the entire Shure SE model line. I have one for mine but it only has one button that functions exactly like the Apple one for their devices, it's just made for Android. You can find it on Ebay labeled as the "Shure SE phone cable" and you'll find the legit cable made by Shure with only 1 button for in-line control (but that 1 button acts as 3 separate buttons) for connecting to any android phone and you'll find chinese knock-off cables for cheap with only a 2-button inline control for the S4. I just checked and this is what I found.

---------- Post added at 11:28 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:58 AM ----------
Oh, the 1-button in-line control like the Klipsch earphones have is exactly the same as Shure's cable. Also comparing the Klipsch to the Shure earphones, you don't need to download any android app through the manufacturer to have the in-line control cable work with ANY android phone. Lastly, if it makes any difference to you... Shure has been around a lot longer since the mid-1920's versus the mid-1940's like Klipsch. Ive listened to the Klipsch S4's and they are ok.... if there was more bass and had more balanced highs and lows, plus they don't stay in.
Yes every person has different likes and preferences but try out the Shure SE high-end line (preferrably the SE535's), you won't be disappointed. Even their low end models are really good (215's & 315's).

Funny, my Etymotic HF3 (designed for Crapple) worked completely, all 3 buttons, on my old HTC HD2 which had a Windows Phone 6.5 OS, but only the center button works on Android. Is this a hardware limitation? Android limitation? Really annoying to not get full functionality from my otherwise beloved HF3s. (They work just fine on phone calls.)
I just tried the stock S4 headphones for the first time. Pretty good for freebies, but not in the same league as the HF3. Now I'm wondering if I could cut the buds off both of them and swap them, so the (lame) white Samsung cable could be used with the HF3 buds? The Etymotis aren't cheap, and I'd hate to ruin them, but this 3-button limitation of Android is unbelievably annoying.

I have tried a lot of different ear buds, I am still trying to find better ones. I have tried Bose IE2, Klipsch Image S4i, NoiseHush NX80 and Nokia Purity WH-920. So far, the Nokia earbuds are the best I have found. They were designed for windows phone, but all three buttons work on Android. None of the buttons work on iphone, which is weird.
Believe it or not, Apple's earpods have excellent sound quality. Unfortunately, they are very uncomfortable and are not noise isolating. But I use them when I go for walks, since they don't start to hurt until about a half hour or so and allows me to still hear what's going on around me.
So far, I've read that the Klipsch ones do work but I'm not actually interested in earbuds. I've been researching all over the net and here's a post I took from another thread from earlier this yr. There wasn't a lot of info but this was all I could gleam from it:

A-jay five for android
Bose AE2i Over the ear headphones <--- seems to have partial capabilities, apparently the volume buttons don't work.
Personally, I'm still mulling over getting the HTC Beats Solo or just buying Beats Solo HD and getting this aux cable to replace the monster cable. I'm only hesitating because I don't know if it's true that the cord will work at all. I may still end up taking the gamble when I get the extra cash.
Sorry to bring this back from the dead but here's the deal:
- apple & android use different electronics (resistance levels) in their button controls.
- come crappy android phones (Motorola, LG) won't ever recognize the extra buttons on android headsets
- some cool phones (Samsung, HTC) do recognize the extra buttons
If you want inline controls on your favourite headset, the thing to do is get your crappy stock earphones with controls (from Samsung, htc, etc) and then solder your preferred speakers onto them.
It's not a simple task but it's also not that bad; I've done it several times putting etymotic earbuds on my HTC cables.
I(f you have an apple-compatible headset you like, you can also add the resistors to the controls to make it android compatible but that I've never done.)
I have found the bluetooth planttonics back beats pro to work great can activate s-voice long press volume skip pause play can control music with voice control except play all others work range is awesome and the stabilization pieces make it hard for them to fall oht and most of all they are comfy

3-button Android Earphones with MASSIVE sound

Its been a long search, as you know most earphones are MFI based apple buds or bad sounding low cost crap buds, not functional on Android (atleast not 100%) or lacking the 3 buttons..
Finally I found a pair that has great sound and 3 buttons and very good sound, balance but with an extra BASS kick.
Great fit and flat cable! Their housing is made out of aluminum to preserve sound. Killer design but do check that yourself, my taste might not be yours..mega bang for the buck, beating all my old earphones (apple originals, apple dual d, sennheiser.. to name a few)
New king of my hill is:
Sabotage Royale 3-button earphone for Android
Their web & shop: www.degausslabs.com
Does anyone know this Saboage site ? is it trust worthy ? seem like the guy above just registered to do an advertisement of this product. but they do look cool. Hope any senior member can help comment about it.
Thanks
Hi
Well Im not advertising them but very satiesfied, but please get some member with seniority to vouch for it. As said Im no sound pro, but I love'em.
I bought mine at a hifistore in center Stockholm which may be one of Europes coolest hifi stores. Check out their Catacombo soundsystem serving you when getting buried!
They have mailorder as well but dont know if they ship overseas..
Dont forget to mention you want the android version:

I personally have used this: http://www.amazon.com/Monster-iSoniTalk-Microphone-Headphone-Adapter/dp/B000V8RCTS
I like using the 2 system better because there's no cord noise that affects the microphone while the cords sway when you're walking.
Hi, found this review on the Sabotage Royale 3-Button for Android. This test was done on a Windowsphone so the mic didnt work.. But I think its seconds my opinion pretty much.

Yep, as the title says, I found a good pair of headphones with mic that you may like, it's nothing new, but nothing that I could find in the Nexus 4 forum either...
Here it is! "Sony MDR-ZX300AP/L" made specifically for Android phones (according to Sony's website).
Weird side note: they are OMTP (according to Sony chat representative), and AFAIK, Nexus 4 is CTIA, so I decided to grab a CTIA<-->OMTP adapter, which only inverts the 2 cables that differ from CTIA/OMTP, funny thing is, when I connected the headphones with the adapter, they worked perfectly (also tested the mic), then I decided to give it a try without the adapter... guess what... they worked too (plus mic)! WTF they were not supposed to work....
Anyway, I decided to share this finding to you, I have to specify that mine is the latest revision (AFAIK) from Nexus 4 *White*, so I'm totally clueless if they changed something in the hardware to make them compatible with both CTIA/OMTP...
I also paired the headphones with a computer adapter, so now I have a computer headset (mic works too!) "StarTech MUYHSFMM 3.5mm 4 Pin to 2x3 Pin 3.5mm Headset Splitter Adapter - F/M"
Final notes, mic quality is 4 out of 5, not the best, not bad, there are other color(s) available, definitely sturdy and yet comfortable pair of headphones, build quality totally explains the price (it can be either good or bad, depends of your point of view, very good IMHO)...
CAN'T POST PICTURES (YET!), SORRY

I'm completely a noob (here at XDA), but, I uploaded the photos to my photobucket account and when I used the image insertion feature, there was a warning message saying no external URL links until the 10th post...

There should be a manage attachment's section when you post to attach/upload pics. I guess if you uploaded them, you probably are on a diff computer? But it's fine. Thanks!

Oh I thought you can always upload but new members couldn't post links until after 10 posts. My bad.
By the way if you want good IEMs:
Westone 2/UMX 3
Klipsch S4/X10
VSonic GR07 BE
Atrio MG7 Pro
I can name a lot but those 4 are good and price wise not too expensive.

Jesus, you must be quite the audiophile.
By "not too expensive" I was expecting to find something not too much more than the meelectronics stuff.
Guess the S4 is reasonably priced

Haha when it comes to quality and sound I go for the good stuff. That's actually least expensive when you compare them to 300+ they do fairly great and for the Price you can't beat them.

You can consider yourself an audiophile if you start spending more than $100dlls on headsets/accessories to listen music... I'm not saying it is negative!, just pointing out that there is certain price threshold where people with an educated ear need something better than the average $30-$50 headsets... (audiophiles )
For mere mortals such as me... this headset is very good, I'm still able to distinguish a weak spot in a range of frequency but I'm ok with that, bass is also a little weak for my taste but there is no microphone version of the XtraBass variant of this headset...
Talking about headsets, it surprised me to find out how other people prefer/user other more expensive headphones in their cellphones, poor DAC cannot even power such a high impedance! they need a FiOS amplifier to power them up... gosh... talking about obsessions...
There is a good reason of why many headsets/headphones have weak spots or poor bass, and this is obviously because they were designed to power up from weak sources (such as your cellphone's DAC), of course newer cellphones have improved a lot in this department allowing users to throw higher balls on the park (S4 by example)...

LOL, I am no audiophile. I just like my music to be clear and hit bass nice and crisp. But I do have the V-Moda M100's in my collection lol. I use that on my N4 mostly, but I use the M100s on my N7 and laptop at home.
When I want in ears, my go to ones used to be the Sol Republic Amps HD. Great headphones for the price and are tangle free. I just got some Munitio NINES 9mm in ears and the bass just blows me away. I am not a bass heavy listener, so I had to lower the volume on a lot of my devices lol. I gave my wife the Shure SE215 clears for a flight recently and she thanked me because she needed them when on a flight where there were a bunch of minors on a flight without parents and of course were loud. The lady next to her asked if how she could deal with all the noise and my wife said...what noise? I had my headsets in. They were clear so you can hardly see them if you aren't looking so that is a plus lol.
Bottom line, there are lower end headphones like the google ones, or sony ones that do the deed well on its own. I am not saying they shouldn't be used, far be it. I say try it and if you are happy, then that's all that matters right?
