Multiple Google accounts on you're phone. - General Topics

How many of you have more then one Google account on you're phone?
Does it add more Battery drain or cause any issues?
The reason I ask is I have a game linked to one account but it's not my main account. In order to play the game I must use my other Google account.
I guess I'm just asking how many of you have more then one account for any reason at all.

I have 2. One private one school. It drains a bit more than one since I got both on sync. If I only have one on sync I don't notice any difference to one account.

I have several one for business and one for my personal gmail.

Adding multiple gmails wouldn't drain your battery provided you opt for a sync option too often. Since you use an email ID for game purpose and most probably you need regular updates on that better u turn on auto sync for that and just the normal one for other account.

I have three accounts and don't notice any extra battery drain.

Eight accounts, but I have none set to auto sync. (Living on a border makes setting anything that involves Data to auto sync a terrible idea.) So no battery drain.

A little off topic here, but is there any good reason to have more than 1 Gmail account set up?

I have 3. I don't see any difference in battery life.

Simple. Most of us have multiple accounts.
- A friends account. Usually the one you've had for years. It's also generally an embarrasing and/or unprofessional name.
- A professional account. Because applying for a job under 'Daworldsmahb*[email protected]' is not going to get you hired. Ever.
- A work account. Most occupations give you a company email, and more and more often it's a Gmail account.
- A uni account. Because we really don't want our professors/teachers in our Hangout/ Google+
- A spam account. For all the websites/papers/adverts/coupons you register on that you know are going to spam you with pointless rubbish. (though you usually don't set this up on your phone to sync.)
- There's more reasons.

I'm using 2 Accounts at the moment with no effect on performance or battery drain at all. Need them both because one is for private use and the other for more public

Correct, I actually own a business account, a spam account, a personal account, and a work account.
However, I set these all up on my phone (not to sync) but anyone can easily use my phone and look at the different accounts I have, right? I don't want to set up a lock on the phone because it makes me inefficient and it's pretty slow. Any workaround?
Do people also use multiple Gmail accounts just for the Play Store because I see absolutely no reason for that.

If you dont want to set up a lock on your phone, look into privacy apps. They generally have an option to lock specific apps with a password. (antivirus apps do, too, but eat more battery..)
Not on my phone, but my gmail account is linked to mum's tablet as a secondary Google Play account. Why? Because she uses many the same apps as me, and we're not rich enough to buy it all twice. (Next launcher is 13 euro's, f*ck no, that's 2 days worth of food! .) And if you remove the account, the license check comes back as invalid.

It's not necessarily the apps themselves showing I have multiple accounts, but the phone. For example if I go to my "Phone >> Contacts >> My profile" it shows I have multiple email accounts. It also shows in the Settings >> Accounts that I have a lot of emails.

Thanks for all the replys.

Google talk

Since there is no way to use two google talk accounts, how do I sign out of one account and sign in with another? Even with auto sign in turned off, when I sign out and then launch it again, I get logged in with the login I don't want.

Not sure if it's possible. I think the app uses the Google account you registered to your phone. Maybe you can add another account in Settings->Accounts&Sync, and make it your default Google account somehow. Other than that, you could always use Third party apps like Meebo to sign into your other accounts.

That isn't a solution.
I'm sorry to say so, but i'm 99% sure that there is no way to switch accounts. It automatically uses the one you register the phone with. The same one you use on market.
As of right now, it is not possible to change accounts on google talk. I have researched this myself many times. It is even a flagged issue on google. It has been flagged and even acknowledged by google employees for 2 years! Only option you have that has almost all features of talk is fring.

[Q] New Market

So did anyone else notice that the new Market has an account setting? Allows me to select different accounts. Does this finally mean that I can merge two accounts worth of apps? Family style?

Im not sure if you can merge 2 accounts, They have to have a way of preventing people from signing into a family members account and downloading apps that were bought thru said account. If not then it poses a serious problem for app developers and devs getting paid correctly. Unfortunately I dont have another account to test it on..

"Your application purchases are tied to your Google Account and can be installed an unlimited amount of times on any device." See:
http://www.google.com/support/androidmarket/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=113410
It works for watching movies rented on another account, too:
http://www.google.com/support/androidmarket/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=1283330
Keep in mind you do still have to add the additional Google account(s) to the phone, meaning the device will have access to all other Google services including Gmail.
so lets say I added my gmail account to my wifes phone and downloaded all the apps I have paid for to her phone..couldnt I just delete my gmail from her phone after and her phone would still have all my apps on it?
The documentation doesn't say, but most likely yes, and it'd be real easy to test it. Just add your account, download an app, remove the account, and see what happens.
Keep in mind, though, that without the associated Google account you won't be able to update those apps -- which is an enormous downside in the long run.

I plan on just having a family account to buy apps on, and then add that to all the phones. But it use to be that it had to be the main account.. I haven't purchased any apps yet, recent iphone switcher, but now it appears to not have to be the main account... which is awesome cause google talk only worked with the main.

[App] Hotmail official

Finally for those who use Hotmail an official app with push mail and a widget not bad although the widget isn't very aesthetically pleasing.
Hotmail App
I'm gonna try this one out... there's always the stock app, which does it job good enough, imo... but this one might have something the stock one hasn't...
Thx!
Not a bad app, I expected worse.

Any chance someone could post the apk?
I've been using this for several months as the SEVEN Beta, it let you add any email account including corporate/exchange ones. Still using it and it works really well.

Yea, it has Yahoo and Gmail and you can add Exchange accounts too as long as the account has webmail access. I think you can also add custom POP3/IMAP accounts. But for some reason the Beta is no longer available on their site. You can probably find it through a google search though it's called Seven Mail and IM Beta.

Yeah same problem , it realy drains the battery.
I realy liked the app because of it html support in email, but it realy sucks because of the battery drain!
Anyone knowing a good alternative with html support and a clean interface?
I'm happy with the battery life using the app. As a matter of fact I switched to using the Hotmail app from using an exchange based email. Under Exchange, push was constantly sending POP3 requests and I was getting errors saying that I was exceeding the maximum number of POP3 requests. Battery life was terrible.
Under Hotmail/SEVEN app, battery life is great and no POP3 errors.
HOWEVER, my problems include
1. I cant add or update my contacts since it only displays the names of the contacts and no other information... like email, phone etc.
2. Some emails won't show the message body. Still trying to determine why certain bodies won't show but the majority will.
Hopefully they can fix both BUGS. Other than that, it's a decent app.
thanks for sharing, really good

Noob concerned about privacy

I logged into my google account on the web I use for my phone and I was shocked to see the information Google collected about my use of the device. It collected phone numbers from my contacts, even the pictures I asigned to them, calendar appointments...I can understand there are Market applications I downloaded, but come on, contacts and appointments? Is this phone not mine? Which applications do this and how can I prevent it from happening? I thought I don't have sync on....

Hi,
What ROM are you using?
On mike1986 's latest,he has removed the HTC LOGGERS and various other Spyware apps which HTC have installed.
Worth checking out.
See my sig
Also ROM CLEANER
This will remove the spyware from any ROM when you install it.
I did not put any other rom on the phone because I don't know how. I'm afraid that rom cleaner may be a little bit out of my abilities. I don't quite understand what is going on with this whole data collection even...

I see! I found it in apps. Google Backup Transport. There is also Google Clanedar Sync and Google Contacts sync. Darn! I guess it's not safe to remove these applications with root uninstaller?
Just untick the sync options in Settings if you're that bothered. I actually like having it so all my contacts can be moved between Android devices that I sync to my account

Anything that was already sync'd before you unchecked the box will remain there...you can safely delete them from your online Google account. Have you never read or heard that this is one of the advantages/core features of android?
But don't call tech support or cry when you have to either replace or master reset your phone and lose all your stuff.
I have a whole closet full of android devices and I love the fact that I can grab my 2-1/2 year old G1 and log into it and instantly be reminded of my appointment that afternoon without having to worry about anything.

I had sync OFF since I bought the device about a month ago, and it STILL happens, I know this becuase it also synced my NEWEST contatcs (two that I added just this week) and appoinments, so this is not me being that dumb lol. I have all my contacts on my sim card, that is where I want them and I don't need google to collect them for me.
Try altering the settings from your google account online. Like go into google calendar from a computer, and don't let it sync to anything. Likewise with contacts.

Not to be rude, but it strikes me how many people are like this, just because some random fool found out how to read out location data from a iPhail they fear every possible logging feature, unless your a cd printing piratebay connected child molester, nobody will look at your logs, calm down.
And its google, you can just configure you dont want it, either in initial setup (first boot) or in the settings as mentioned above.
Thing is, though, as soon as you sign into your Gmail account when setting up the phone it's automatically syncs the contacts. You could turn off sync, delete them from the phone and online and then it shouldn't sync up again but if that doesn't work I don't think you can get around it. How you can still have numbers on a SIM is beyond me - I prefer all contact details under 1 entry personally
lol so using google for sensitive-info emails is ok, but some contacts and calender items are taboo?

ISP Email or Gmail/Hotmail etc?

I'm just curious what everyone uses most for day to day? Your email accounts that come included with your home internet or online services like Gmail and Hotmail?
I have 2 email accounts on my ISP that I use for most stuff. My Gmail account tied to my phone I only use for Google Play and nothing else. The reason I prefer using my ISP email is because it's less popular and less prone to datamining by big online entities like Google or MS and they're just as disposable. I guess I feel a little better deep inside letting Rogers spy on my activities than an international giant online entity.
For example, I'll use my ISP email accounts to sign up for PayPal, dropbox, eBay etc rather than Gmail.
Just curious what others prefer
Neither. I bought my own domain and use e-mail on that for everything personal - gives me as many different addresses as I want for self, webmaster etc.
Of course, there are many times when I also create a spam-drop address for web-site sign-ups.
Gmail. I have my own domains as well, and use them on Google Apps.
It's convenient. I've been using my gmail since near the start of gmail and there's no reason to really change it.

How does the search function work on that? I think Gmail has surpased hotmail as it is really easy to use and groups emails together. I never thought I would switch to gmail but it seems superior at the moment.

Outlook.com is more in line with what Gmail has to offer. MS is finally rebranding and doing away with Hotmail. I like how you can create a throwaway email addy in an instant.
Recently setup an outlook.com address and thinking if migrating to that from gmail. A few articles I have read indicate that MS will be taking users privacy a little more seriously than google does.
