Custom rom gives more space? - Galaxy Tab 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I recently bought a galaxy tab 2 7" 8GB, but I can only use 4 of it. Would installing a custom rom give me more space? Its a shame that they really only give you 4gb

No, you will need to jump through a couple hoops and leverage your sdcard slot, by using a swap script, or an app like foldermount, gl2sd, or similar. Personally, i used the swap script when i was using 4.1.x, but now i use foldermount. The p3113 swap script is on these forums, and foldermount is in the play store, or the thread for it, which are in the android apps and games forum, or software development, i forget which.
Oh yeah, every option requires root access.

Just a quick question since it's brought up. What class sd card is suggested for doing this method? I've read that class 4 is better than class 10 for doing this, but that was on my Xperia Play. Just wanted to make sure before I invest in one.
Thanks.

I don't know if it is true, but I had a class 4 SD card on my xperia mini, and i when I bought a class 10 16 GB,the phone was about 30% faster with swap then class 4 with swap.
So I believed in classes ;D

Class 4 = 4mbps
Class 10 = 10mbps
You tell me.

I have a 32 GB U1 which U1=Class 10 fyi.
My tab has 16GB storage but only about 12GB useable so it would make sense a 8GB only has about 4 useable.

Class 4 will never be as good as a class 10. I am running a Samsung Class 10 UHS-1 70MB/s read and 20MB/s write card and that is about as good as it gets. Anything higher is not supported by our device (read and write speed-wise you would be over-compensating way too much).

I read somewhere that when using the sd card for apps and the such.
Ah, here it is:
This higher class # = higher speed across the board is a bit of a misnomer. Lower class (4&6) seem to have higher random access speeds, so when pulling up files lower than 6MB, it may behoove you to have a lower class card. Seems handy when pulling up photo and MP3. If you're transferring large files you may see speed increases for things like full movies or apps. Is it worth 10 seconds every now and then? I'll let you decide.

Yes, it definitely gives u a lot more space because stock roms are filled with bloatware (pre-installed apps), which according to me are useless. If you flash a custom rom it is not filled with all that crap and will give u a lot more of storage like if you have an 8gb tab 2 u will get only about 3-4 gigs of free space on stock but if you switch to custom rom you will have around 6-7 gigs of free space.

No one has tried repartitioning space from system to data? System takes up over 1.4 gigs, so with most ROMs your wasting a gig of space.

Not the way it's configured in the stock manner. You have to increase the read ahead. Also a Sandisk class 4 will probably blow a generic class 10 away.

Also if it is indeed a generic card, be careful about where you buy it from. There are a lot of fake SD cards floating around the internet that are basically repainted 256mb cards set to keep overwriting data to appear larger than they are.
Also remember that the class of the card is an indication of write speed. Read speeds are pretty close to the same across all cards except that the higher quality cards(Sandisk, Kingston, etc) will read a little faster from what I understand.

Basically, a 32GB Class 6 card from Sandisk or another reputable manufacture is what you want.

It's a useful program, and seems to speed things up quite well. I also used a program called SD Tools: https://market.android.com/details?id=ales.veluscek.sdtools&feature=search_result to test the performance changes to determine the best settings. I found 1024 to give the greatest improvement with my card (32GB class 2 SanDisk).

yes this is normal it holds some file on the card needed for partitions ect but its normal
yes its normal i also see 29.71GB
I thought the 32gb in the name counts 1000 mb in a gb whereas the computer counts 1024mb in a gb or something so they make seem like you're getting more than what it actually is...
Same for hard drives for your computers as well

All memory devices have to reserve space for tables... like for holding filenames and pointers to the first sector of each file...
It's both reasons combined (100vs 1024 and the space used by the drive mapping)

I agree that Class 6 is sufficient.
But keep in mind that read/write speed increases with classification (duh). And just like some of us overclock our CPU's even though 1.5ghz is sufficient, we do it because we can.
Also, class 6 are harder to find than class 10 for some reason.
Same here
But when they say 32 GB i feel they must make 32 GB available after checking in computer. What say dudes ? I'm going to fire an email to Sandisk.

Installing app bigger than SD

Hello there, I would like to know if it is possible to install an app which full size is bigger than your sd? In my case I want to install nova3 but my sd card is only 2gb(actually 1.8) and nova takes 2gb of space. Since the Atrix 2 installs directly to sd card is it impossibly for me to play it unless I buy a bigger sd card?
I tried to look this up but nothing showed up...
Thanks beforehand

I want to flash a custom ROM but I don't have an SD card. Is there anyway to do that?

Yes you can. Download the Rom to your computer and push it the adb but that may not work so spend $7 on a card and live a little.

Thanks. For this particular device do I need to worry about the difference between a Class 2 and a Class 10?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
The class is the speed it moves data. Class 2 is 2mbs a sec and class 10 is 10 mbs. So spend what you need and that is all you need to do. I use pricewatch.com for that or amazon.com but a 4 gig card should be super cheap.

[Q] Slow class 10

Anybody else with a SanDisk Ultra 64 GB class 10 / UHS-1 find the write speeds slow?
I'm pretty sure it's a genuine part. It's at 8 MB/s write with my laptop

So getting close to the advertised speed, like I have with every other SanDisk, is unreasonable?
Your sdcard works right? Slow or fast it works right? I'd be happy.

That's like buying a brand new sports car with a turbo boost leak and then being like "oh well". My 2.3 GB nandroid backups take about 13 mins. So TWRP is writing much slower.
I suggest checking my thread on the SD card you may need to reformat it and clean it up. Also try ROM toolbox pro to turn the write speed up. I write at 55 MB a sec
