Does anyone know what file format(s) the kindle app and google books app uses?

The kindle uses mobi files, not sure about google.
Most likely would use something like epub or pdf for Google I can't see Google locking down the ability to import book files.
But if it comes down to it Aldiko Book Reader has been a pretty good reader for me and offers option to import epub and pdf files and has access to free bookstores where you can get classic books like Alice in Wonderland and the likes.
Do a search on the market for "Aldiko Book Reader" as I can't post a link to it
Most pdf files i think
So I dropped some PDF and epub files on my internal storage but I can't get them to show up in google books. I am assuming I need to put them in a specific folder but I can't seem to find that folder. Anyone know what/where it is? Or what exactly I need to do to get them to show up in G-Books ?

Everyone has stated above already. I just want to let u know that you can get free ebook app.
You can use the free Calibre program, to manage and convert ebooks from one format to another.

Unless the books are drm free, Google, nor any other reader besides the one it's locked down to, will not be able to view them.

I'm looking for an eReader that has cloud functionality. Aldiko + Aldiko Sync & Mantano come close, but not close enough.
I mainly want something that supports PDF, ePub, Mobi
Syncs reading progress & bookmarks, annotations
Works on Android, but somehow can be used on PC with full sync of progress/bookmarks/annotations - even if its some kind of Chrome web app reader
Calibre library management support

fabrik?
Fabrik; also FBReader + FBReader Sync. FBReader has a Linux version; also a Windows version "coming soon".
What you really want is Kindle, though it only works with books you buy from Amazon. Does everything you want. Including a reader in your browser (maybe a PC app as well but I don't think so).

That's not entirely true. You can send anything to your Kindle app. Once you register to you get an email address. [email protected]. Send the document to that address and it appears in your Kindle within minutes.
Will the Kindle app allow me to import non-Amazon ePub/Mobi/PDF? I was under the impression that you had to use material that was purchased from them.
You can import your stuff into kindle but it won't stay synced across all devices.

Hi,
I'm new to play books, been using aldiko just fine, wanted to take use of the google cloud storage. Anyway got account setup and all works well on my phone(samsung, gingerbread), my superpad7 (ICS, 4.0.4) and both my comp.(mac and PC), but when I opened up a epub file on my ployer momo8 rockchip (4.1.1 jellybean) it displayed the pages miniture or blank, PDF's work fine.
Thanks
P.S anybody know how much we can store in our accounts(gb)? It says 10,000 books, but i've got some reference PDF's that are well over 100mb each)
I've tried Moon+, Aldiko, and a few others, but none of my covers show up. Aldiko would "import" my books, creating duplicates. Moon+ could only read some of the metadata, like 25% of them, anyway, and its sorting sucks (by title, or FIRST name of author). Other apps aren't even worth mentioning.
The Freda ebook reader, which has been popular on various Windows platforms since 2009, is now also available for Android. That means that you can enjoy the same reading experience across your Windows and Android devices, using the app’s features to sync between the two platforms. The Android app is on Google Play (still in beta-testing right now, so please feel free to offer feedback). You can get the latest version of the app for Windows from the Microsoft Store.
Freda is a free (advertising supported) app which gives you easy access to over 50,000 public domain classic books, free of charge, from Feedbooks, Gutenberg and other on-line catalogs. Or read your own (DRM-free) books in the supported formats: EPUB, FB2, HTML and TXT. App features include:
Customisable controls, fonts and colours
Highlighting and bookmarks/annotations
Integration with on-line catalogs – Feedbooks, Smashwords, Gutenberg …
Connection to your OneDrive and DropBox accounts for downloading book files
Linkage to your Calibre book library
Opening books from websites and email attachments, and from files anywhere on your device
Ability to tag books by subject, and sort/filter your bookshelf by tag, author, title, and series
Text-to-speech, speedread and auto-scroll
Automatic synchronisation of your reading position across all the devices you are using
A save/restore feature that allows you to copy all books and settings from one device to another
The OpenDyslexic font and a range of dyslexic-friendly settings, for use by readers who are affected by dyslexia
For further details, take a look at the intro video, the manual, or the support forums, and if you have any questions or ideas about the app, I would be glad to hear from you, in this thread, by PM, or by email ([email protected])
