[Q] Change SIM card - wireless disappears? - General Questions and Answers

I live in China and use China Unicom. I need to install some software from Google Play that won't install in China. So, I power off, insert my T-Mobile SIM, and reboot. This has always worked before. This time, after booting, the wireless network does not appear. This is my home network running DD-WRT and WPA2. The network shows up in the "Wifi networks" list but "not in range". My computer's wireless works just fine. Using "Wifi Analyzer" app with China Unicom SIM shows a strong network signal, rebooting with T-Mobile SIM shows nothing in range.
I don't think it's related to Google Account login credentials because it doesn't get to that point. No network = not able to log in. I have done this SIM switch before and it always worked just fine.

Nexus S roaming problem with ICS

Hi,
I have a Nexus S I9023 with baseband I9023XXKI1
Provider is Telenet in Belgium, which is a full MVNO with its own MNC
When running any Gingerbread version, the phone works fine when going out of the country, and returning.
But with any ICS rom (stock or CyanogenMod) the phone will not be able to connect to any international providers, when my providers SIM is installed. But when I stick my providers SIM into another phone the SIM will switch over, after which I can put it back into my Nexus S and I can roam to any other international provider without problems, but the phone will not switch back to my own provider when I get back into the country. At this point I again have to put the Telenet SIM into another phone to force it out of roaming mode after which I can put it back into my Nexus S and it works again on my own provider.
I also tried with another Telenet SIM and had the exact same problem, so it is not a problem with the specific SIM itself. But when I stick in a non-Telenet SIM it does switch to roaming and non-roaming without problems. So it clearly is a combination of the ICS ROM with the Telenet SIM.
The only other thing I found is that the MNC code in apns-conf.xml is wrong for Telenet. It is listed as MNC=10 which used to be correct until sometime last year when everyone was issued a new SIM with MNC=05. But with a custom APN setup mobile data works fine.
If anyone has any idea how I could solve this issue, I would love to hear about it!
Cant Activate/Deactivate International Call Roaming on Nexus S.
Hi,
Same issue here, mine is Nexus S, running ICS 4.0.4, baseband version I9020XXKI1. I am not able to make calls in roaming. I spoke to my provider (O2 Germany) and they say that, I have to deactivate the lock (Lock to activate roaming). I haven't found any way to unlock this service. I have not tried what the OP has mentioned in his post (i.e., to put the sim into another phone and then try back in Nexus S). But I would like to know, how can I Activate or Deactivate the roaming lock ??
Thanks,
Cheers!!

The only roaming feature you can enable is for Data. This has no effect on roaming for normal phone usage.
You can change this setting under "System Settings" -> "More..." (under Wireless & Networks) -> "Mobile Networks"
Here you will find a "Data roaming" option, and possibly a "National data roaming" option
I have a Desire Z with Android 4.0.4 and Telenet for the cellphone also. I noticed I have to activate the romaing in Belgium to have the data connection which is strange as I'm in Belgium. Now I hear that they can be issues calling/sending sms abroad... I'll see when I'll be in Croatia.
I activated for the moment all the option (data roaming, national roaming) for the moment, nothing more strange than having the romaing activated and the 'R' in the network signal.
National Roaming seems to be needed on some phones, since the Telenet SIM swap last year to get a data connection in Belgium. On my own Nexus S phone I don't have the problem. But on my wife's SE Xperia Mini Pro (2011 model) with stock Android 2.3.4 it does have this issue.
The old sim used MNC=10, while the new SIM uses MNC=05 and it seems that some phones have some kind of issue with that.
MNC is the Mobile Network Code, which together with the MCC (Mobile Country Code) forms a identifier per provider.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_Network_Code
I narrowed down the issue somewhat.
Basically my prior workaround that the SIM needed to be swapped to another phone to force the network to connect was false.
What actually needs to happen to force the phone to enter or exit roaming is to pull the battery.
Rebooting the phone, or shutting it down and rebooting (cold boot) does not make a difference, the battery needs to be pulled and then the phone will switch networks.
I found this by accident, because I was out of the country and it was as normal refusing to switch to roaming mode. Then the battery died and I connected power to the phone and booted it, and it suddenly connected to a foreign provider in roaming mode.
Getting back to Belgium, it again refused to switch back, so I verified it by just pulling out the battery and putting it back and the phone successfully was able to connect to Telenet again.
In other words, some component needs to be reset for it to successfully switch to roaming and back. This component does not get turned off when the phone is turned off, so the battery needs to be pulled.

[Q] Dual SIM phone roaming / not roaming question

Hi
I have a Zopo ZP950+ with Etotalk ROM, from China, it is a 5.7inch Phablet running stock JB, with Quad Core and DUAL SIM.
http://www.etotalk.com/zopo-zp950-16g_p3854.html
I am in UK, with UK SIM installed (T-Mobile), so at moment not roaming, but phone constantly tells me I am roaming.
I want to use the full 3G/HDSPA connectivity so do not want to disable data.. Under Settings/More/Mobile Networks, there are no options for roaming settings to change, though there is a "data connection - off" option, but I don't want to turn data off, and the roaming warnings are intrusive when sending texts or making calls.
If I can''t "fix" the fact that Roaming indicator is constantly on, even though phone is not roaming, can I hide the warnings every time I make a call or send a text?
Any 3rd party apps out there to help?
Thanks
While I wait for an answer, I will add this: I just tried a giffgaff SIM using O2 network, all is fine, seems to be a problem only with T-Mobile SIM, called T-Mobile they said I needed a replacement SIM card, but this SIM is fine in 2 other un locked (though not Dual SIM) handsets.

Hi there I have the same issue with my Star Note II N9599 and it too reverts to Roaming and I use Orange UKeven though its now part of EE Network UK but I did find out that the handset is actually Roaming! To check this go into Dial Pad and type *hash*hash3646633hash*hash* then goto Connectivity then down CDS Information the to Radio Information then to Phone 1 and you can see if the Sim in slot 1 is truely Roaming or Not?
I have yet to find a fix for this issue but did also stumble across my Associated Network Radio Bands as follows:
GSM MODE ( SIM TRAY 1 & 2 )
EGSM900 (selected)
DCS1800 (selected)
PCS1900 (selected)
GSM850 (selected)
UMTS MODE ( SIM TRAY 1 ONLY )
WCDMA-IMT-2000 (selected)
WCDMA-PCS-1900 (greyed out)
WCDMA-DCS-1800 (greyed out)
WCDMA-AWS-1700 (greyed out)
WCDMA-CLR-850 (selected)
WCDMA-800 (selected)
WCDMA-IMT-E-2600 (greyed out)
WCDMA-GSM-900 (greyed out)
WCDMA-1800 (greyed out)
WCDMA-1700 (greyed out)
Now at best guess I take it these settings are not correct for the U.K.
If this is so then which BANDS Do I Need and how do I go about changing the greyed out ones that I cannot select to be selected as a usable Radio Band?
I have looked as best I can on Google etc but Im all new to this and not entirely sure what to look for or how to do it if possible?
I have read other sites of users being able to change the Radio Bands for other types of Handsets so I know there must be a way?
I still have the issue where I can set my phone to Register on the Orange network and it connects and gives me 3G with Data but soon after the connection decides to reset to Roaming and drops Data unless I choose to select Data Roaming?

[Q] [HTC One M7] Can't connect to Network in Australia

Hi, I have a Vodafone Germany SIM card that I would like to use in Australia to receive text messages (for online banking verification).
I have it S-Off, rooted and converted to Google Play edition and it has the latest Lollipop firmware, if that matters.
I have been in Australia since February and this used to work perfectly fine (a couple of months ago), but today when I tried to use my German SIM Card again I got "Emergency Calls only".
When I go to Settings --> Wireless & networks --> Cellular networks --> Network operators, after searching it gives me a list of 4 different operators, as well as choose automatically, no matter which I click on it says "Registering on [network] ..." for about 1-2 minutes, and then tells me "Can't connect to network right now, please try again later"
I have tried all I can think of:
Rebooting Phone
Turning LTE/3G/2G on/off
Turning Roaming On/Off
Turning Data On/Off
Dialing *#*#4636#*#* and turning on GSM only/ GSM auto/GSM LTE auto
All to no avail.
I have no problem using my Australian SIM and had no problems doing the same thing a couple of months ago. My Phone was already S-Off, etc. then.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Not automatically registering on network (CM 12.1) (VirginMobile UK)

Hi, I'm on CM 12.1 and my OPO won't register on networks at boot (I'm on Virgin UK). I have to manually go to Mobile Networks > Network Operators and select EE (which is a network Virgin uses). After that everything works fine, I have network and data. But if I connect to WiFi, data will be lost when I disconnect and won't come back unless I manually register to the network again. Also, network will drop much more often since I only use EE and the phone won't automatically connect to other networks. If I go to Mobile Networks > Network Operators > Choose Automatically the phone disconnects from network and I get "Emergency Calls Only".
NOTE: The SIM works in another phone without problem. However, my other SIM works perfectly fine in my OPO.
CONCLUSION: My guess is that the settings for the Virgin SIM failed to download correctly. I had to manually add the Virgin APN to use data (which I usually don't have to).
QUESTIONS: Is there a way to reset the SIM settings stored on the phone without factory resetting? I might be wrong, any other ideas on how to solve my problem?
Thanks, Dan

Help with s8+ roaming connectivity

I am currently in Italy using a Vodafone UK sim card, it's been working perfectly (apart from randomly dropping complete signal periodically) but now it's just completely died, as in it won't find a signal at all to connect to any network let alone data roaming. I have contacted Vodafone who said there's nothing wrong at their end and the worst thing is it was working perfectly till this evening. So now it sometimes says emergency calls only or just the ring with a line through it as it cannot find any signal at all. I have tried doing manual network operator selection and automatic but still nothing... Any ideas? It's a g9550 128/6gb
Update I now have 3g data but it says "no network connection" and I cannot send receive texts or phone calls, yet I have full data...
@nugget123
Consequences of buying a CN/HK variant....
They usually have network connectivity issues, not surprising. Try removing the SIM card, turning the phone off, wiping cache in recovery, insert the SIM card, and then reboot. Then manually go and search for a network in settings and force it to connect to Vodafone Italy, should work.
It's working now again, I didn't do anything lol it just started working on its own accord! I'm now in Switzerland and all is good. My life is empty without my phone
It always happens to me when abroad. I am on O2. I have to select network manually and pickup different to the one which auto connect shows emergency calls only. Looks like some cells allowing me to connect but won't pass through calls
Do you also have a usa/china variant?
No, o2 UK from Samsung
