Good starter phone to develop on - General Questions and Answers

Hello, I was hoping you could help me. I was hoping you could suggest a cheap but good phone to start developing on/for. Is it easier to develop for certain phones or are all phones alike? Is it easier to develop apps for certain phones then others? I hope you can help me, thank you.

Why not develope for your nexus 4?

I have no doubt that I could, I just wondered if there were easier phones to start with or something the such.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app

I think Nexus 4 is considered the "de facto" developers phone, at least by Google it is...

All nexus phones are good to develop for since google releases the source code for them.
In addition a few other companies have started to release the source for their devices such as sony and oppo.

Just thought I'd say thank you for your help to everyone who replied to this thread. It is much appreciated.

Your opinion please?

Just wondering if the tapatalk app is really worth getting if xda is the only forum I visit? Should I be on other forums as well, even though they all seem to link back here for everything?
Stupid I know lol but curiosity got the better of me.

Continue using the xda app. Its better IMO
I consider Tapatalk one of my must have apps, but I'm also a forum junky. I'm a member of about a half dozen I visit daily, plus one I run.
sent from here to there...
Does anyone use digital spy and reckon they should launch an app for there forums?

they're almost the same imo, but XDA the app is much easier to navigate
Just like everyone else has said, if you use a lot of different forums then tapatalk is great!
If you just use XDA, then by all means use the XDA app, it's much better.

If anyone could make a Nexus, a chinese company could make one, call it a Nexus, have idiots buy them thinking they will get software updates, only to be left in the dark

I don't have any knowledge of how to port webos to the nexus 7 but I'd love to try it if somebody could do it
Still think webos is one of the best OS`s that I've used

Not to crush anyone's hopes I said " might" I have yet to start going through tutorials on xda university and it will take me ages (I have only a small amount of experience with c++ and non at all with c)

Oh and also anyone could have an as good a chance as me as doing this you can just start to learn android development from xda university and that should help understand open webOS a bit more.

Actually we don't need to port I just remembered about the phoenix webos app that the phoenix group have been working on that let's u run webOS within android we don't need to port we can just wait for that to come out.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
I heard about the app, but having a limited os inside an app isn't the same as installing the full os on the device
I'll probably try out the app but I still think it'd be better if someone could port webos proper to the nexus 7
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Well I wonder how it would be limited you could just take a ROM and use titanium backup to remove all in wanted apps and just use webos for everything.

Guys have you read this: http://www.androidcentral.com/open-webos-finds-its-way-nexus-7

They just need to release it publicly so everyone can use it

They've released how to test it on webos ports http://www.webos-ports.org/wiki/Testing_Nexus_7 but u still have to boot it at first via the PC (after its booted to webos you don't need to keep it plugged into the PC) but apparently using it won't affect your android install, now just to figure out what ifconfig is.

This kind of comment is NOT going to net you anything but flaming.
Had you of read the rules you would have seen that questions do not belong in the "general" section they go in ...wait for it...."Questions and Answers".
Imagine that!

Have you tried looking at the forums for phones you might be interested in, then comparing the most active ones that way?
Actually doing things for yourself can be quite rewarding.

I would love to learn about building and maintaining Android roms. The longer I can keep this phone going, the better.
I would be interested in doing this - I'm always looking to learn some new skills. I have the same commitments to work and family that others do but would be happy to contribute whatever I can.
Anyone wanting to learn....pm me so we can discuss the teamchat

boy oh boy do kids ever eat up your time. i've had my "toy" car (a mazda miata) sitting in the garage for almost 2 years now, waiting for me to fix it. i already have all the parts i need, i just can't find the time to do it. my daughter just turned 5 last weekend and my son will turn 2 in a couple weeks.
i'd love to learn how to cook up some roms or even just learn more about the ins and outs of it all so i can feel more comfortable tweaking things, but that darn TIME thing... if only i didn't have to sleep...
that said, i wouldn't trade the kids for anything. best thing in the world.
ok just to let everyone know as a precaution to joining... this will require a linux setup and i will provide the android build environment setup instructions as well...the team chat is also on hangouts as it makes it easier to use for both desktop and mobile devices to stay in the conversations....so if you all pm me your hangouts info ill add you to the team

Thank you. I hate windows 8 anyway. I think it was a step backwards.
