It is okay to do a full format for your internal memory, if and only if you don't need anything on your SD card. Be sure to have copied everything you need to another storage before proceeding. But how can you flash a ROM from CWM if you formated everything. Just format after flashing the ROM not before.
Why you can't backup using CWM?

If the ROM is on an external sdcard, it shouldn't matter. still, that is good advice, as accidents happen. For instance, when i started using twrp I formatted my external sdcard instead of my internal, and lost my backups. Live and learn..

CWM will not backup my ROM and i think there might be some corruption on the SD card because CWM goes throught the motion of backing up the rom but says it cannot find SD card or SD ext.
Can i reinstall CWM over its-self?
thanks

Are you certain there is no backup? I know i have had it say something like, can not find SD ext skipping SD ext, or something, when using cwm, and it really didn't matter. Uhm, but yeah, you can always reflash it or try another custom recovery, like twrp.

Yes, you can reinstall it over itself. Have you also tried to backup to external sd?

Thanks for your replys
What i have learned is that in JB 4.2. CWM put these backups in a safe place on the SD card (cannot find the with a file explorer) but when i use CWM to ro restore my image it does it 100%
Don't know how to backup to ext SD.
thanks

If you use Philz touch recovery you will find the option to backup to external sd. I don't remember if it's possible with Cwm too.

there is an option in cwn to backup to ext SD but is does not save it to SD or EXT SD so is this because CWM is corrupt?

You mean you nvflashed internal recovery through so you flash roms from internal storage? If you want to use your sdcard to flash roms you have to nvflash external recovery now.

Did you select Internal at top of page. If yes. I would reboot phone and reflash TWRP recovery from Goo Manager.
I might have to do this because my files are everywhere, and possibly to have a clean start. I'm backing things up, but if I wipe internal storage, will it give me an issue if I try to flash a rom and gapps?
I believe this will delete your recovery too so you will have to push your recovery back on to your phone using adb.

If you wipe data in twrp it wipes the internal card now.
Learned this the hard way that they fixed it. Thankfully I don't keep anything important on their and keep it on my external card.

I accidently wiped my internal storage on my S3 and don't have an SD card. Can I flash a new ROM using my PC? Or am I ****ed?

Yes, you can side load a ROM that's downloaded on your PC, or you can push a ROM to your internal storage with ADB. There's definitely a few guides on how to do it in this forum.

Yeah. Wiping and formatting your /system or any internal directories is lovely for a fresh and stable start... just need to have a ROM on your eternal SD card, haha. I've done this several time, forgetting about having a ROM to flash afterwards. LOL.
Just get an external card, have the ROM and flash it from there. Makes everything way easier!
i am thinking of doing a clean install on my phone
what i was planning to do is format everything sd/external sd
format system on CWM
i just dont want any traces from anything or any folder left behind on my phone
what is the best way to do this?
i dont wanna end up bricking it :crying:
any help is appreciated
Heimdall or Odin install stock UCLB3 GB, or stock froyo..
Then format sd cards from Settings, then factory reset from Settings.
Optional... Connect phone to PC,mount drives and use a data wipe utility on both sd cards...

My personal choice is to format both SD cards on the computer.Takes a couple of minutes, but if using Windows uncheck the quick format option, after that in recovery go to mounts and storage and format cache, data, system and boot
Go here and get qksters clean wipes. I flash this before every flash and rarely have bad flashes or bugs related to dirty flashes

Or, from recovery you can format system, wipe caches, and clear data/factory reset. Then flash the ROM.
Either way, DO NOT format or erase your sdcards. Make sure your ROM install zip is copied to your internal sdcard before the steps above.

The clean wipes wont touch your sd cards internal or external. It will only delete ur current rom and such so make sure you have a cwm flashable rom in ur internal or external sd card before flashing clean wipes or that u can odin back to stock. I would reccoment a nandroid backup before doing anything.....like always

when i go to backup my rom in clockwork it wont let me back up to ext sd it says cant find ext sd is that a reason because i have a 64gb sd or whats the issue thanks
Make sure your sd card is formatted to Fat32. You'll lose the ability to transfer >4gb files.

Just download "GooManager" from the Play Store. Press your menu button and select "Install Open Recovery Script" and the latest TWRP will install.
In regards to CWM and two sd cards. Sure can, but who really uses two external sd cards for one phone?
