[Q] android xbmc remote question - General Questions and Answers

So I finally have an htpc setup in the living room with xbmc running, I really like using the xbmc remote, yatse or other dosnt matter to much, its very nice to use the remote since I can easly find what movies I have and other information much more quicker and I dont interrupt anyone or myself when watching something, it also has a nice feature of sending a youtube link to be watched on xbmc.
What I wanted to know, is if its possible to have an android device locked completely off all apps and can only use two apps, specifically youtube and an xbmc remote app, the reason for this is that it makes my life easier since their are other people who watch xbmc but are not as "tech" oriented or what not, but using a remote like this might make their experience alot easier, so basically the android device can only change between the xmbc remote app and youtube, everything else is hopefully unable to be accessed.

Google TV Help - from Canada Eh!

Hello,
Wondering if I can get some general help, I know the google TV is american only but I like to have some fun as well.
First, I can't download the google TV Remote app on my samsung galaxy i9000, I've tired downloading an .apk but it just didn't work, any suggestion or how to guides on this.
The Google TV works better than I first though it would in canada I can control my PVR some what and I faked an american comcast zip code and the search feature works some what but of course the programming and channel numbers for comcast don't match my Shaw Cable account, is there any way around that, in the settings I noticed it was pulling that info from some file, any idea how to trick it?
Also I am quite disappointed with the way I can't play almost any media files on my computer, the closest I have come is using my playon media service and the m.playon.tv with my lan on the google chrome but its so bad, was getting some Hulu access if I was running my VPN but I kept getting time out errors, worked fine on my phone browser tho. Any suggestions or other programs or ways?
Forgot to add, I am using the Logitech Revue
Thanks
Dave
Bump!/Update
Very much thanks to BluechipJ for sending me the google TV app, worked out great.
So more of the reading I've done seems that this box just doesn't support local media files very well, I've tired a few media servers,
TVersity worked somewhat good, some play back on all files but still couldn't get a great all around experience.
Playon which has been my main media server works the best so far, but only on the mobile side, if you use the browser and go to m.playon.tv and have it setup on your computer you get access to hulu (with VPN) and all your media. Interface is not very good on the m.playon side but it works. Still having problems getting complete hulu playback and have issues with larger MKV files but I had those issues on the PS3 so still have to figure out whats causing it.
If anyone has any other suggestions or experience I'd like to hear some more.
Bump/Update
Just wanted to do one more and see if anyone else had any suggestions, after more reading and trying out some new things finding Twonky is a good media server pick, for both the google tv and your phone.
Whats great about Twonky if they have your Twonky Manger on the computer which Logitech revue will recognize and mainly works in logitech media player, MKV still an issue if you have the right audio code it would work, I've switch to downloading MP4 files as I can still get good quality and it works well.
Also there is Twonky mobile for your phone, works well with the logitech revue as you can play videos music and pictures right from your phone to the TV, the Beam option doesn't work to my knowledge but isn't a big deal to me.
I'm sure lots of people know about Twonky already but it was new to me and worked very well with my Galaxy S and Logitech revue and seems to be a good system, the app is free but Twonky Manger is $20 I think, also works great with a PS3 system as well.
Hope to get some other suggestions or Ideas, kinda weird updating my posts all the time.

[Q] is xbmc installable?

I love XBMC on my home ubuntu pc, and i know it is tegra2 enabled, but anyone know if it will be installable onto the tablet?
If you can get Ubuntu running on it, sure. Otherwise, barring an Android port you can forget about it.
i hope they do get it to work - especially as its working well for ipads, iphone4, etc.
Why?
I guess i just don't really understand the use of xbmc on a tablet. On my htpc sure.
Use Plex.
Stupid character limit.
Xbmc is an awesome platform for video playback, plus cab link library's with a central unit. Would work well with my setup.
ok just read my post and it didnt make sense! (was typing using iphone!)
XBMC is an awesome program for video playback and library. I would want to use it on the tablet for viewing as I can link multiple xbmc librarys to the main central one i use on my htpc (which also acts as a home server using ubuntu). I know that it is running as a upnp server too, but its the library linking that would be great - i watch a lot of tv shows, etc.

I only got the XBMC Remote to work to control my pc and use the DLNA-functionality of XBMC on my PC to have him act as my media server and watch it with upnplayer. XBMC does make a navigationable library as media server where you can select on actor, year, director, title etc. but it is not as fancy with covers and banners as in XBMC.

XBMC should be capable of doing what you want through DLNA. Go into settings and enable UPnP video sharing, then browse to it on your TF, and it should show your entire library across all xbmc devices. And it lists the files in library mode, not file mode, so you get the pretty naming instead of viewing raw folders.
If you mean you want things like posters, metadata, etc then no this is not possible. XBMC is slowly being ported to ARM platforms but it is nowhere near usable except on the Apple TV 2. There is a ton of interest in getting it on ARM, but I haven't seen any work done for Tegra2, so chances are it will never run on our Transformers.

[Q]

Hi,
I want to set up a whole house media center, I have a xbmc server running in my house and a windows 7 pc which I can stream from also.
I have seen applications for andriod like 2player and skifta which allow me to stream music from these devices and it offers the ability to stream to other devices.
Can anyone advise me how I could set up a second android phone as a receiver. Since android phones are now so cheap I think it would be quite nice to have multiple android devices to act as receivers around my home.
I would aim to start a application like 2player on my own personal phone, choose my pc or xbmc server as source and then choose the music to play on one of the android phone.
Can anyone advise how to set this up as I don't know how to get the android phones to listen for streams.or even any alternative suggestions?
thanks in advance,
Dec
Hi guys,
Just to update this post last night I spent a bit of time researching this.
I found another app called "bubble upnp" which works as a dlna dmr.
I can see it all starting to come together now. I was able to stream from my xbmc server to another android phone running bubble upnp and using 2player on my own phone as the control point.
I am happy with this but I'm not sure if these are the best app's for this?
Also I think there maybe a small issue with power usage. I don't want to leave WiFi running on the end devices all the time. And or the dlna dmr app if possible.
I think sms gps can remotely turn on WiFi aswell as gps so this maybe a simple work around.
But not sure how to launch an app remotely on android phone.

[Q] Streaming Video

Hi All,
I'm looking for a good Streaming Video server that can be used on Android that works over cell networks (3G or 4G) and has tablet support. A giant bonus would be a server that is also a DLNA. Something with a Windows client would be pretty sweet as well. The TF will be my primary device, but I'd really like to be able to stream to my phone, laptop, and Blu-Ray player as well.
I'm currently using Plex, and it sucks. The server is buggy and laggy, doesn't find Metadata for shows unless they're named PERFECTLY, and won't show me videos that it can't find Metadata for. I will say the interface is fantastic, but it needs a lot of work.
I've read some good things about the VLC server, but it appears to not be very user friendly. While I'm technically savvy, I'd prefer to try something first that works just as well and doesn't require a difficult configuration.
Thoughts and recommendations please?

Streaming games and watching movies at the same time?

I was wondering, is there a way to watch shows on my computer screen at the same time I'm streaming games to the shield?
I run a single monitor (1080p projector), I was thinking could the "steam big epicure/stream" run in the back ground while I make use of the desktop (ie: watch movies) ; or perhaps set it up in like a mock dual monitor setup? so that a "virtual monitor" would be where the steam big picture would run, leaving the main monitor free for me?
The streaming works by opening up the game and then just streaming your entire monitor, so it's not possible to have it run in the background. I've never tried mock monitors, but if it works the same way as just having dual monitors then it would kind of work.
I say kind of because what's running on the other monitor will continue playing, but all audio is streamed to your shield and there's no way of stopping that. Also, if you ever adjust the movie or otherwise make Steam or your game lose focus, the stream will stop.
I hear that people with true multimonitor setups, that shield streaming disables the other monitors any ways.
I found a work around, it's kinda dumb, but works.
In my case my monitor is a 100" projector, so great for movies, So I got my old blackberry playbook, installed plex on it, and connected it to a second input on the set up. So essentially I stream to the shield games and stream movies to my projector at the same time.
I mean it would be WAY better if I could just use my desktop at the same time using the shield but hey, it works.
I am no programer or anything, but, couldn't they make game streaming like a "media sever"? Something that runs in the background with no visual rendering on the severing computer?
first of all Hi everybody, im new to the forums, About not being able to run games in backround, Yes, that makes sense, but if you say it just streams your entire Monitor to device itself, do you think its possible to stream Desktop with icons and applications to the Shield?

Not the way the Shield Stream is set up. Steam's "Big Picture" has to be fullscreen and on top at all times, other wise it will cancel the stream. Which means your best option is Splashtop.
the only way we can do this, is by streaming Whole Desktop , to Shield or Android device . same way as Remote Desktop but only using Client and protocol used by NVIDIA GRID Software.
