I looked there. I do not see the answer to my exact question. Thanks for the help though so far :good:
I did find this: http://www.usofttech.com/t19223.html
It's about unlocking the 2.14 bootloader. Will this work for me?
Thanks again!

Quoted from Q&A which you read apparently.
"Q3: My One X is stock and I accepted the JB OTA can I root it now?
The answer is NOT at this time"
Also if you read the thread you linked and don't know if it applies to you, you shouldn't be rooting.

I was previously on 2.20 but downgraded hboot and RUU downgraded to 1.85.
My question is, since I was previously rooted on 2.20 do I just unlock the bootloader and reflash TWRP? Or do I have to re-root my phone?
and to unlock my bootloader, can I just use the unlock code from when I rooted 2.20? From the looks of reading the guides from redpoints index thread I can't. I just want to be sure.

Is it an AT&T phone?
If so, you can't unlock the bootloader, and thusly you cannot root.

The fact that it's refurbished has no bearing over whether or not it's rootable.
The main point of the question was if I should or shouldn't... If they didn't reset the bootloader or main circuit board I can end up with another brick. That's what I'm trying to avoid this time

One of the various reasons why the "one-click" methods always look suspicious to me. It often ends up being "one-click root method for every phone . . . except HTCs".
But by all means, OP should try it, and let us know.

Actually, this makes perfect sense in theory as you use that to root. It says nothing about unlocking the bootloader.
Once you have root, you could then SuperCID and then unlock your bootloader.

OK just go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=37227608 grab the 2.20 ruu for AT&T only. It should say Cingular and ICS. Run that so you can upgrade. Don't download the 3.18 or jb, or else all of this was for nothing.

The ruu tells you step by step what to do. These phones are more tempermental than Samsung stuff. If you rush it and miss a step you will probably end up with a paperweight

I agree that Samsung+Odin makes life easier. But I like the challenge in AT&T (and Motorolas). Whatever floats your boat. Glad you got it rooted. Can you put a [fixed] or [solved] tag in your title? That way people can easily find the answer instead of making a new thread

I think you're misunderstanding the whole idea behind this, did you do any research? You don't root before unlocking the bootloader, it's the opposite.
This method doesn't root your phone. It gives temp root so you can gain SuperCID, and then you can unlock the bootloader via htcdev, and then you can gain permanent root after flashing a custom recovery.
PS. It's basic rules to search before posting a new topic, your question has been asked and answered countless times already.

Read read then read some more having someone use team viewer to do it for you defeats the purpose of learning. This is technically a dev site. People will help you but hand holding isnt on the list. Wether u have rooted other phones or built roms is irrelevant. You now own a one xl. Take your time and learn. Doing it for you defeats the purpose of learning. If you wanna send me the phone and 50.00 I'll mail it back rooted.

It's gotta be against XDA rules to ask for payment to help someone. You can set up a donate to me button like I have and give users the option to donate should they find you helpful like a digital tip jar but asking seems tasteless :/
