Bricked it, ADB fails, RSD fails... - Motorola Photon Q 4G LTE

Are there any other secret options for restoring a bricked phone other than RSD and ADB fastboot?
See here, post #45 & #49 for a synopsis: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2095536&page=5
Basically during the failed flashes my phone ID changed and now it won't verify with ADB or RSD, the device name is no longer XT987 or whatever, now the device name is "fastboot Asanti_C S" and even though the phone and pc recognize they are connected, the connection doesnt verify.
Any workarounds? Edit the XML file maybe?
Please help, desperate.

Device recognized by RSD Lite as "fastboot Asanti_C S" while booted to bootloader UI is completely normal.
Adb not working while booted to bootloader UI is completely normal (adbd is not running on the phone).
Does fastboot work?
What's the response to this command?
Code:
fastboot devices

I guess when I said ADB isnt working I should have said ADB fastboot isnt working. It doesnt read any commands. It just says device not connected or whatever, USB read error, something like that maybe "fails to recognize", I forget the exact term. The computer makes the chime noise for connection/de-connection and the fastboot menu on the phone says usb connected, and also RSD lite reads the device. It just fails on step 1 of the flash, USB error. The devices acknowledge that they are there, or that something is plugged in/into, but its like they can't agree on what the phone is or is supposed to be called or located or whatever.
The sprint store guy says he couldn't fix it. I don't know what I am paying $48 a year for service and repair for.
Hopefully I'm just noobing out real bad and someone can help me out but I don't think thats the case.
I will try that command when I get my phone back in about an hour. I know there is always hope but.... I dunno. I unbricked before with RSD and it was easy money. I even used ADB or whatever to push my recovery, so I am familiar with the basics, typing in some really basic code in xml or fastboot or whatever.... but as far as ADB fastboot and RSD, I think they are toast. I've restarted the computer, the programs, etc. Re-installed drivers.

Well, your phone seems like being far from a brick to me, according to the info you've provided so far.
The crucial question is if you're still able to use the fastboot command to interact with the phone or not.

great.

After being so bummed out and missing half an important day of work and not being in contact with anyone, I just went to pick up my phone from the Sprint store... and they are going to replace it for free! It has to ship from somewhere. They also let me keep this old one, of course, cuz I bought it, but still I had no insurance only the equip protection plan and they could have asked me to swap. It does kill my plans of using the MPQ on a road trip next week unless it gets here Monday but overall I am supremely satisfied with the customer service of Sprint. Think about it: I bricked my phone on my own free will, voided the warranty, screwed it up and all this stuff.... and they are going to replace it for free with no insurance, no deductible, no cost of any kind to me! I really don't know why. I just went in and told them it bricked on the jellybean update but that I tried to fix it and I could do no more. Then when I called to check in they told me it was bricked, and I would need a new one, and by the way, you dont have insurance. I asked them if there was any warranty or anything and they said no since it had been rooted. After that I went to a meeting and then stopped by both Radio Shack and Best Buy where the phone is still selling for $550-600+ outright with the intentions of buying one and billing it to one of my jobs which I hate to do. But I came back to my office instead knowing there would be an insightful post from one of the members here and read kabaldan's post so I figured I should go get the phone and try it out. What do I have to lose right? Well, I went in and asked for my phone back and they had me waiting for a few minutes. When they came out with the phone they said "We found another option and we can give you a new replacement for $50 but you would have to sign up for insurance as part of the deal." And I was like, well sure, sign me up! So they went back to the back and I was all happy about only having to pay $50 and all this. Then next thing I know the guy comes up to me and tells me not only is it going to be free, but that the insurance he mentioned isn't mandatory either. So no change in phone bill, no change in my bank account, and Sprint makes a customer extremely happy when they didn't even have to. Only downside is the shipping time. Its not like I went in there and acted irate or made threats of leaving or anything. I have been a customer for 10 years now so it feels like a nice present. They always take care of me. When I was asking the tech why they were giving it to me for free he was kinda at a loss for words, I dont know why, maybe they didnt want everyone in the store to know they were hooking me up. So I started laughing to myself and said to him "Maybe its Sprint giving me credit back for all that LTE service I've been paying for the last 2 years huh?" (we dont have LTE in the area) And he said "They're not that nice." HAHA! So I guess the store just overrided the system or something, hooked me up on their own, I dunno. But there is one happy Sprint customer here! Thats for sure.
Now what to do with this bricked MPQ? I would love to get it running. I can't describe how much I would love that as I don't see any good qwerty sliders coming anytime in the near or far future. As you can see I always need a back up, if its not from damage its me bricking them. Worst case scenario, how much is it worth in parts? I just feel like there has to be something.that can fix it cuz its at least showing fastboot. Something is going on in there.....

Does it matter where I extract them to? Or just that they are decompressed?
Thank you for your help. I feel that if I hadn't read you post, if you hadn't posted, I might have not went back for the phone today, and maybe the same crew wouldnt have been working there, and probably I wouldnt have gotten the free phone out of the deal. Sorry with all the quoting I wasn't trying to quote so many times. I know it sends an email every time.

The extracted cdrom and system.img files have to be placed in the directory from which you run the fastboot command.

Ok well when I try to extract the files, there is an error on both files. They won't extract! The progress bar goes to about 60 or 80 percent then fails and the 7Zip message says "CRC failed in 'asanti_.....' File is broken." !
When I type in the "fastboot oem fb mode clear" command it says OKAY 0.007s finished. Total time 0.009s
I guess my fastboot is working and the file is broken. Maybe its a bad fzx file from Sprint? And thats why the store couldn't fix it either? I am going to try and re-download the fzx from that link and see if those files fail again.

Well I need to do a bit more research on manually fastbooting. I'm betting if you look at that XML file you can figure out the commands it is sending, and send those same commands... This is probably where kabaldan found those other commands.
Give me a minute.

Well, by your description, the process has been interrupted when you've been flashing system.
Therefore almost everything is already in place and what's missing is to flash the system and the cdrom.
Code:
fastboot flash cdrom cdrom
fastboot flash system system.img
And unset the sticky bit that tells the phone to always boot to fastboot.
Code:
fastboot oem fb_mode_clear

Reading the XML, these are the only remaining steps after system.img is flashed other than erasing. It erases tombstones, cache and userdata, then does the fb_mode_clear.
Good luck matt2k12.

Hey guys, wanted to follow up since I let this thread sizzle...
I got the phone running on Friday. I think the Sprint store was just lazy. They had done something to the phone but it was still stuck in fastboot. Well when I got it back to my office and started messing with fastboot it restarted back on my ICS twisted ASANTI build without me even flashing or doing anything. It was almost like a failsafe mode or automatic restore or something. But there was a problem. It still had the security credentials from JB while running ICS. So it was shutting the phone down constantly, as soon as they verified.
What I ended up doing was pulling the security file from the JB zip file and placing it in the ICS zip file. Then I went to a clean ICS flash with the JB security file. Then I could do a clean upgrade to JB from there.
Did it all with RSD lite. Edited the zip files with 7zip. The security file I am referring to is gpt_main0 or whatever.

Well that's good, glad to hear you're back up and running.
So long as fastboot works and your device is recognized by a PC, I don't think you're ever really bricked. It's honestly difficult to truly and completely "brick" one of these phones, trust me...

Hey guys, I bricked it real good this time, and now my title is true. RSD doesnt show the device, and Fastboot won't work. Details:
Last night I downloaded CM10.1 at home and was going to flash it before I went to bed. Well it was a bad download or something so I was going to restore a TWRP back up I made earlier in the day. Well apparently that backup didn't flash properly and so the only thing I could get the phone to do last night was get to fastboot mode. TWRP was gone or not working. So I left it in fastboot all night and left it on the charger so I could flash it with RSD lite this morning. Everything was going good until I got to my work computer, phone still in fastboot mode, and when I plugged the phone into my computer's USB, the screen went black and fastboot went away. Now there is just a green LED showing when its plugged into the computer, or charger, and an audible noise on PC. Every now and then the "Warning Bootloader Unlocked" screen will come up and just stay there. It never goes away unless I hard reset (Power + Vol Dwn).
However, fastboot does not show the device serial number upon typing "fastboot devices". It just skips a line and doesnt do anything, just sets up another command prompt. No response. No serial #. Also when I type "adb reboot fastboot" of course it says "device not found".
I have work to do today so I am going to let it sit. Sometimes funny things happen with this phone when you let it sit for a while. Also when it runs out of batteries and gets restarted sometimes it helps. Very temperamental phone.
Any pointers? Any way to get this thing going? I'm going to let the battery drain and see if that helps but it could be 6 or 8 hours from now. Also going to clear up my computer and shut it down and restart it so I have a good working station.

[Q] If Wi-Fi Xoom is bricked, can (RSD) flashing the 3G SBF, then fastbooting work?

Damn, I can't fit the whole question in the subject.
Let's say someone hypothetically bricked their wifi Xoom. Can't connect with fastboot anymore. However, it does get picked up by RSD Lite.
If the Wi-Fi Xoom is bricked, can flashing the 3G SBF using RSD Lite be used JUST to enable fastboot? And if so, would just doing a "fastboot flash boot boot.img" and "fastboot flash system system.img" (with the right wi-fi files) be able to save it? And possibly the same with recovery.img?
I noticed that the boot.img and system.img files are the same size between the wifi version and the 3G/4G. Same with the recovery partition. That's why I ask.
If you can enable fastboot using RSD then I don't see why you wouldn't be able to unbrick it.
If I were you I would try it. I don't think you can brick anymore than what it already is

Scourge, what is the error message in your xoom?
It was something like LNX 0x0004 and the following message was about Fastboot or RSD mode 2. It changed depending on if I held the down button on reboot. I lost the ability to scroll through the boot options.
I couldn't get fastboot, adb or RSD Lite to see my Xoom in either mode.
Did you get RSDLite to flash the .sbf file? I tried that on my bricked device and I couldn't see anything happening on the screen of the xoom. I waited for about one or two minutes and stopped the process. What about the drivers? Are there different drivers for adb, fastboot and RSDLite? I have motohelper installed and it says all necessary drivers are installed. Can it be a driver issue? Thats something I haven't tried.
My Motohelper updated itself and I was still not connecting with my first Xoom. There are different drivers. Different ones become active depending on what mode you're in.
But I couldn't even see my Xoom so I declared it bricked as of April 14th at 3:47am. I seriously don't know the exact time.
When I use adb or fastboot from my Mac, I don't need drivers. It just works.
i have Mac and Windows same problem not show xoom

Yeah, if nothing can see it... What exactly does Motorola want to charge to fix it? Can't you return it to where you bought and get an exchange? I'd only feel okay with that if you bought at a big store though and not a mom and pop sorta shop.
I dont know if this will help, but I noticed that in your first post your commands may not be complete:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash system system.img
Your are missing the words in red above. I may be wrong and you dont need them, but Im sure you do. At least all I got was a bunch of command options scroll in my command prompt without the entire command.
I thought I had a bricked xoom after messing around with the frameworks-res.apk through "root explorer" app. I flashed the boot.img like crazy, but it was my frameworks that I had messed with last before the locked boot sequence. I found an image on the boards for the 3g system.img and I was back in business.

Oohh... Relocking is not good... If the images aren't exact factory ones, that's a sure brick. No point in relocating the Wi-Fi version. At least not right now.

Xoom Wifi "Failed image LNX 0x0002 / RSD mode 2"

Hey everyone. I figured id make an official thread, although a thread a few down is very similar but still quite different.
I attempted to re-lock my XOOM wifi and I got the error.
-only able to get into RSD mode 2 or Fastboot protocol
-pc will not recognize through adb or RSD 5.0
-tried various command and no luck
-Screen wont turn off unless battery dies.
- reinstalled sdk, drivers etc.
I might of missed a few details, but ive been all around the forums and have yet to see a solution for this other than send it to Motorola. Ha just curious to whether anyone could shed a little more light on this situation. Not being able to RSD or adb seems like a bad situation, even if we did have that darn sbf id still be stuck! Thanks guys!

Try to get the xoom back into fastboot by rebooting (vol up + power) and then immediately holding vol down + power until the fastboot screen comes up. From there try pushing system and boot .img's through fastboot. Then you should be able to reunlock from the fastboot command on your pc. There is no way that I know of to re-lock a wifi only xoom as of yet.
Yeah, my bootloader screen says that im "Starting Fastboot protocol service" but I get no response from my PC. I've never had problems with adb recognizing my xoom before this. Its like the drivers arent even compatible with the device anymore?? For craps i attempted to send some commands through adb even though it didnt recognize the device, and had no luck. ADB simply replies "waiting for device" for all of them.
try reloading your moto drivers
Make sure you aren't using a front panel port. I had thus problem for ages, XOOM is a power hog. As for the LNX failure its the result of relocking with an invalid image, don't do it.
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk
Yeah, i spent days trying to figure that one out with the front ports vs. the back ports with my droid. I could never get it to remount in RSD when flashing a .sbf.
Thanks for the heads up though. Im not sure what made me think that it would be ok. My failure to do some research always lands me in pretty much the same spot! Here.
I reloaded all the drivers ect and have been unable to get anything. My droid works great, but no xoom.
Had this exact thing happen to me today. What fixed it for me was
- boot into fastboot (Power+Vol Up then immediately hold Vol Down until you see it display the fastboot message) and push the stock boot/system images found all over this forum for your model (Wifi/3G)
Now obviously your ADB isn't seeing your device... neither was mine
- Go under Device Manager on your PC and uninstall your Motorola drivers from whatever devices are listed
- Do a fresh install of the Moto Drivers and restart your PC
- Run, 'fastboot oem lock' to allow RSD to do it's work
That's what it took for me. If that fails, unplug your Xoom from the PC and set to debug mode, then plug back in and let Windows find your drivers. Windows could take some time, and actually took me unplugging/replugging twice until it decided it found them.
RSD is a load of junk, but when it works it's like the miracle worker =P Good luck and keep your head up! These things are harder than people think to completely wreck =)

Sorry I guess I didn't mean to set it to Debug from the Xoom, but as in to remove it and boot into Fastboot. Then plug it back in and allow Windows to install the drivers.
I had a hard time getting it to work, but after uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers, it recognized it and allowed me to flash the SBF.
Correct me if I'm wrong here! It's what worked for me. My Xoom went down like this and I resurrected it this way. Been working flawlessly on Tiamat 1.3.1 ever since.
Sorry guys, but the condition I'm in is becoming popular lately. I'm able to get the XOOM wi/fi to show "starting fastboot protocol" but absolutley no recognition on the pc. RSD or ADB. Therefore all commands sent from the ADB simply respond with "waiting for device" and unable to flash any images onto the device. Its in a real brick mode. At least for the time being with the lack of software communication on the pc and no .sbf yet. I sent the device into motorola for repair. They said the repair would be under the warranty and free of cost. I was honest as well, telling the repp I had unlocked the device and attempted to re-lock. Thanks for all the suggestions and input guys.
follow up?
hello i am curious what happened with your returned brick? did moto replace it?
I ask because i have the exact same issue and have gone through all the suggestions.
same error, cannot get into fastboot, no adb, no RSD, nothing. tried the various vol power button combos etc. no recognition on PC at all. yes i re-installed drivers etc etc etc... i have been reading...
it seems only option is to wait on SBF or return?
Yeah the only solution would be an sbf flash. But even with that i do not know how because the RSD lite does not recognize the device either.I simply placed an order online, they sent a box the next day, sent it and got it back in two days. Extremely fast. I told the tech rep over the phone that i had unlocked the device and and then downloaded an app that starting causing for restarts and so i attempted to re-lock the device and from there it was officially a true brick. I was honest and they seem to be very understanding. Im sure they understand that the lack of support for the device is evident and we are all beta testers. SO let em know whats going on. I also let him know i was a developer, whether it mattered or not i dont know, but i was just being honest. Its all covered under warranty he said. I didnt pay a penny
OK well its good to know I am totally screwed!!! thanks for the reply...
I told the rep on the phone what I did but I don't think he had any clue what I was talking about... he asked to me to reboot with vol up, then try to boot into fastboot, but didn't once say fastboot, just said vol down, then said he would send me a shipping box.
Get it today!!
I am in this situation after trying to re-lock in order to install the 3.1 update. I tried re-installing and updating the Moto drivers, rebooting etc but I can't get my PC to recognise the device in fastboot or RSD. I am on a stock Canadian ROM (but unlocked obviously).
I have sent an email to Motorola and been honest with them. Will see what they say.
That's the thing - moto provides all the tools to relock for US ONLY! There is no official way for canadians, which makes no sense. So us canadians can unlock no problem, but cannot relock, yet US units can? Strange to me...

Try rsdlite 4.9 or earlier it should see it then.
I tried RSD 4.9 and no luck. I think it just doesn't work with Wi-Fi only zooms.

Anyone who locked the zoom back and now can't boot, try my instructions from another thread...
1) Turn the xoom on and leave it plugged into USB. 2) When it says Starting RSD Mode 2, type the following in your command prompt in windows "fastboot oem unlock"
*Make sure you are typing these commands within the directory where your fastboot and .img's are located. ( I dropped mine in C:\Android-sdk\platform-tools\*The Xoom will not respond initially and your command prompt will say "waiting for device".
3) Hold the power button and volume up to reset the xoom. The fastboot command should intercept the xoom booting and take you to the unlock prompt again. Follow the on screen instruction.
*This will wipe the device again, which I'm assuming you did when you locked it with a custom kernel (boot.img)
After it is completed, type "fastboot reboot" in windows command prompt or just reboot however you can.

I have just tried this and still no luck. Fastboot just sits there with the "waiting for device" message and the Xoom just boots with the "Starting RSD mode 2" message. I also tried your suggestion with rebooting into fastboot mode by holding the vol down button and that doesn't work either.
BTW I don't have a custom boot.img. I am on a stock ROM but I just had the bootloader unlocked.
Incidentally I have tried RSD lite 4.8, 4.9 and 5.0 now and none work.

{Solved} Pixel 2 Bricked, need help.

Hey Guys. I'm new to the Pixel 2 and have found myself stuck and not sure what to do. I'm stuck at this screen and keep getting getting an error message staying "Slot Unbootable: Load Error". I am not able to get into fastboot to flash the "Deuces" script or to flash a new system image.
I have tried all of the basic stuff to get to my device to be recognized. I downloaded and installed the latest ADB & Fastboot and I have tried different cables and USB ports and still have no luck. I'm really worried and not sure what to do if I cannot get my device to accept fastboot commands so I can recover.
Please let me know if you have any ideas that may help me.
Jason
EDIT:
I still have no idea what I did, but I decided to use the Skipsoft Tool to see if it would work. Lucky for me it did and I was able to restore the factory image. Sorry for the fire-drill, I should have tried this before I posted. Thank you for the replies!!
Grab the latest Google platform tools and USB drivers. When your device is plugged in, do you see any unknown devices in your device manager? Or anything that looks like it could be your phone?

I've seen that before.
When you select reboot bootloader does that message go away?
Try it without the cable plugged in does it go away then?
I just want to know if you can actually get that message to go away or not at this point.
Also can you link the tools you are downloading

For future learning, I'd recommend you familiarize yourself with how to do this without toolkits. A toolkit is nice, but it really helps to understand what the toolkit is doing so that if you have an issue you know what to do next.

my pixel still cant be detected by that toolkit, can u list the step by step procedure what u did to unbrick the device?
I was having the exact same issue as OP. I wound up fixing it by entering fastboot and making it display barcodes until the battery died. Then I put a rubber band over the power button so the red led would blink (I wanted to completely drain the battery). When it stopped blinking, I hooked my dead phone up to my PC via a USB 3 port and held Power + vol down to boot into fastboot (the battery was still too low for the phone to boot normally -- it would just show the battery icon). Surprisingly, my PC recognized my phone (made the little USB sound) and I was able to fastboot flash-all the newest factory image on it!! No toolkits required!
I'm so happy because this was a last ditch effort before I sent my original phone back to google and would have to live with the RMA they sent me which could not be bootloader unlocked (this is a whole other issue!)
I hope this helps!
EDIT: Info I provided in a PM
Unfortunately I didn't take any photos of the process... I didn't want to push my luck and things are working now. But The photo I've attached was exactly what I was seeing except I was on the December update (Now I'm on the January update) ... and:
UFS: 128 GB Hynix
DRAM: 4096MB Micron LPDDR4
Device State: unlocked (I had been unlocked since April 2018)
Until I had entirely drained my battery, I couldn't do anything. Download mode and recovery mode were impossible to access. I forgot the specific error, but it was the same as a lot of other people who have been having this problem.
The only thing I could do was to restart bootloader, which removed the error message until I tried to do anything. I couldn't boot at all or do anything conducive to fixing my phone until I drained the battery entirely. I couldn't get any PCs to even acknowledge the existance of my phone until after the battery was drained.
Keep in mind, I NEVER got my RMA phone to work. I was only able to fix my original NEW phone that I had purchased directly from google.

This is the correct resolution to this issue.
I had the same issue, no usb in bootloader. I drained the phone and rebooted into the Bootloader flash A and B side bootloader the Aug 2018 (previously working for me) and A and B side Radio, as well as the System image. After that everything booted fine.
Attempted to install the January update the same way and it worked as well.
Seems like they messed up A and B side flashing
My steps::: For Lurkers having this issue.
1. Drain battery DEAD!
2. Boot Bootloader (Vol Down + Power)
3. fastboot flash bootloader bootloader-walleye-mw8998-002.0073.02.img (or whatever image)
3. fastboot set_active b (opposite of the one on screen)
4. fastboot reboot-bootloader

@Dajax2 Super new to this and it may be a total waste since my bootloader screen says "Device State: locked" but in trying to flash or even sideload ota, the command returns "error: cannot load (file location/name): no such file or directory found". Again, total noob and I don't even know if I'm supposed to unzip the folder or not but have tried both ways with the same error.
It returns the serial number for fastboot devices but nothing for adb devices. I obviously didn't have OEM or USB debugging enabled prior. Hoping I can at least get in to retrieve data before giving up all hope :/
Solved. Enter barcode mode. In this screen, check for devices from adb or fastboot. It should be there. You are now able to switch slots and do all the fastboot things.
Great workaround that I would never have thought - good info here, thanks everyone!

Edit - My phone wasn't detected when on the barcode screen, just like from the main bootloader screen.
HOWEVER... to my surprise.. the above method of draining the battery completely to 0% actually worked. I'm a little dumbfounded why this allowed the bootloader to connect via fastboot again, but it did. I was able to flash the latest factory image (without wipe) and boot back up like nothing ever happened. Thank you so much for the tip. I passed this along to Google support and they also said they appreciate the troubleshooting and asked me to just send back the replacement phone with the RMA package/label.

OP7 Pro Fastboot Bootloop! [HELP]

This may be a simple solution, but I am completely puzzled on how to fix this.
SO i recently rooted my phone & used the twrp "twrp-3.3.1-4-guacamole". Installed magisk via that twrp and continued with my day.
I accidentally got a virus by trying to get a full free vpn, me being a terrible pirate, i accidentally got a virus! Silly me.
It was annoying me and I decided to factory reset my phone... not via twrp. I remembered after I clicked "Reset all" on oxygenos that it's not the way how to do it with a root device, and well.. it didn't exactly work.
Every time I power/reboot the phone it just brings me to the fastboot menu of "START", "POWER OFF", "RECOVERY MODE", & "RESTART BOOT LOADER". I thought since TWP is recovery mode I try to access that... no luck, it just brings me back to that fastboot menu. I tried going on CMD via adb by saying "fastboot flash boot twrp-3.3.1-4-guacamole.img". It will say it's finished and successful, but when i reboot and try to access recovery mode it just does not work.
TL;DR: Think I bricked my phone, there is no OS installed and I can only access the fastboot.
Any help? Much appreciated

that being said, i can't access any of my files through my pc using fast boot. on MSM it's just saying "waiting for device" even when plugged in so thats annoying.

I downloaded the one you sent, and after a while as my internet is bad. It still does not work.
Whenever I try to install the qualcomm drivers it never shows up, and when i try and boot it up so the gual recover detects my phone it never works. It's still saying "waiting for device".
Does anyone know how to fix this? it's doing my head in that it's not as easy as it should be.

Pretty sure that your phone will not be accessible via adb/fastboot during the msm process. Did you follow the directions in the link above to a T?
A few things to note:
- Works perfectly fine for unbricking GM1917 modeled OnePlus 7 Pros.
- Use the original cable and try to plug it into a USB 2.0 port. I've found that this is the most ideal condition.
- Make sure your device is charged up. If you can't see how much charge it has, leave it charged via the 30W warp charger for 40 minutes and that should be good enough.
- In the L2 drivers folder found in the archive, navigate to the 32 or 64 folder depending on your system's architecture, and click on the file that ends in the extension ".cat". Then, click "view signature", then "View certificate", then "Install." This is IMPORTANT.
- Then, make sure your device is powered OFF, then, plug in the USB-A side of the cable (big head) into your computer and do NOT connect the USB-C (small head) into your phone yet.
- Hold down Volume up AND volume down for five seconds, and while you're continuing to hold, plug the USB-C side into your phone. The drivers should automatically download, and you should see a "Qualcomm QD loader" device in Device Manager. If you see an exclamation mark or you don't see this, you are doing it wrong and you need to repeat the above steps.
- Open up MSMTool.exe as an administrator and click 'start' only. Should take a few minutes, but you will have a good-as-new OnePlus 7 Pro.

It's one of those things where if someone was there with you, it'd likely get figured out. I've seen this kind of situation hundreds of times on XDA, and with all due respect, the problem is most always at the hands of the user. These phones are cookie cutter made, so there's nothing different (besides individual variants) that would make thee tools not function correctly, unless it's operator error. But that's not set in stone. Just don't give up. Try setting up your camera for an overhead view. I couldn't tell if you were plugging in your cord. And it seemed to reboot, instead of power off. Repeat the steps carefully, and see if you can achieve better results.
Don't give up! We're here for you ?
Make sure phone is powered off before plugging it in. Launch msm tool, Press the vol up and down key for a few seconds then plug in.
Edit : make sure your drivers are up to date too.
I don't know about msm tools never tried it but I know your situation.
Don't do fastboot flash boot twrp-3.3.1-4-guacamole.img
Remove the word flash. You are supposed to boot into twrp then flash the zip file to the phone.
look at this
Command in Fastboot mode is:
Fastboot boot "name of the recovery".img. Phone should boot to twrp. Then flash twrp.zip
or try Fastboot roms:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-7-pro/how-to/rom-stock-fastboot-roms-oneplus-7-pro-t3931424
Choose the one for youre phone (region)
MSM tool it's the last option.
Can't you just switch slots from fastboot or did you mess up both?

If i'm honest with you.. i'm not sure in the slightest. My only assumption is no because the only thing I can access is only the fastboot. if i attempt to go into recovery mode it will go back to fastboot. when I flash twrp it will flash but it won't boot into it. It's confusing as hell.
Just to add to this whole situation:
Since I have no idea and just wanted it fixed in the day; i was willingly to give money for this phone to be fixed, but thanks to the person, he just made it a slower process by doing things i've already done.. going to pick the phone back up in an hour of this message.
I haven't used the fastboot boot twrp cmd yet, but from how everything else has been so far i feel like that won't work, but i will update everyone on that situation.
Just to add additional things that I may have not mentioned in the past will be below:
- Whenever i type in "ADB Devices" in cmd, it will not show up with anything. However, when I type in "fastboot devices" it shows it's serial and in "fastboot". It will only show as fastboot and i can't access the phone via file explorer in windows.
When i say "ADB Devices" it says *devices attached* and will show none of my phones details, but when i say fastboot devices it will then show the devices.
^ what i said above means I can't use the guap recover, or anything which means the phone has to be detected in windows, because other than fastboot, it won't work at all.
- So far I can't access twrp as a whole, so if anyone knows how to give me a guide on how to install it from where I am at, that would be amazing (if not, i'll try and reiterate what to do with the one given from a previous comment, so thank you )
- There was one time I was allowed in TWRP but i completely forgot how i entered it (so i can't explain), So i feel like there is hope in that aspect. I feel like i entered something via cmd so maybe there's a way?
In terms of hardware my phone is completely fine, there's not a single problem other than the software being a pain in the ***!!
if anyone can just spew out a bunch of help in different explanations it means the world because so far all I can see is that I wasted about £600 on an amazing phone because of dumb *** haha.
Thank you to everyone who has helped, and is helping
From your comments, you are not familiar with how Android functions. Not knowing the difference between adb and fastboot is an indicator that you should just endeavour to have a stock phone until you understand whats going one. It's also hard for people to help as no one has hands on and can see what is broken. Everyone here will be working blind like trying to fix your car for you from across the country.
Start the phone into fastboot and connect it to a pc. From a pc command prompt in your fastboot directory enter the command:
fastboot getvar current-slot
If the current slot is A then:
fastboot --set_active=b
or vice versa
fastboot --set_active=a
then fastboot reboot and see if you boot into the other slot.
Not knowing what phone you have makes it even tougher but I suspect you will have to reflash a clean complete rom via fastboot.

I do appreciate the help. If i'm honest with you the only reason I did this is to increase my data speeds (which from look of things is outdated now), and a longer battery life. I don't know much about rooting/jailbreaking but believe me that I have been in the scene for years, but not even knowing everything haha!
that being said.. i'm in twrp! thank you so much mate, i'll try and go and install the rom now. thank you!
Now install the zip twrp
Thankfully.. IT'S FIXED!
I didn't have to install twrp again or any of that. I simply changed the slot from A to B and pressed all buttons when it was showing the "! Your decide is unlocked" orange/black screen.
I had msm tools up and it detected and instantly installed the OS to the latest one and boom. It works again!
I got to thank everyone for helping me because without you people I wouldn't of been able to fix it. I looked everywhere and no help anywhere as I feel like it's pretty dumb to do what I did haha!
Thank you again people!
Oh you gave up on root?
You are supposed to read the instructions and follow them to the letter. When I read your post I realized you tried to install twrp like you would pre Oreo but it changed you have to boot into twrp then install it via zip file.
Anyways just remember that for next time.

Google update bricked phone

Afternoon all.
This morning I had one of the usual messages on my pixel 2 about having to restart the phone to install the update. I did so but now I can't boot the phone. I'm in the bootloader, with the following options and consequences
start > causes phone to restart instantly
restart bootloader > restart instantly
download mode > restart instantly with "ERROR: Operation Denied"
recovery mode> restart instantly with "ERROR: LoadImageAndAuth Failed: Device Error"
Barcode > works
power off > works
I've not tinckered with the phone in any way and have only installed official updates when prompted. I'm trying to get up to date with everything again, and have downloaded adb. "adb devices" doesn't show anything, however "fastboot devices" will display my device. I've tried the unlock "fastboot flashing unlock" command but get "FAILED (remote: 'Flashing Unlock is not allowed')"
Is my phone bricked? It's a few weeks out of warranty.... any help is greatly appreciated.
Hello mate, deffo not a good look with a locked bootloader. Just wondering, as you said it boots to recovery does it throw you to bootloader screen with the yellow warning at the bottom or the proper recovery screen? If you get the proper recovery screen have you tried the press power/vol up button together combo to get to the full recovery menu?

Thanks for the reply. Nope I can only get to the screen with the little android robot on his back... and the options stated above
Like I said my computer can see it using the fastboot command, but not adb.

Fair enough, as recovery was working I thought you may be able to use the button combo to get to the full recovery and try an ota.img via sideload but as you say ADB is dead thats probably not gonna work anyway (forgot it's ADB sideload, been a while since I've used it)
Anyway, I'd be inclined to try my luck with the warranty if you ain't already as it's a only a few weeks out of date, always worth a call and chance your arm with them just in case.
Good luck

Yeah I'll re-attack. They were sure it was a hardware issue and wanted to charge me to repair it. I'm quite sure it's their update that's done it though!
I can't believe they've designed the phone this way though? It doesn't seem very well thought out.

Make you right, don't see how it can be a hardware issue tbh. In case it's of any bearing I remember reading something online about someone having this happen, luckily they were unlocked and flashing a fresh bootloader image to both slots cleared the error and got them back in the game. Might be worth searching that error message online, might give you some ammo so to speak.

Thanks again. Has this happened to anyone else before? i.e. just restarting when told to by the normal google updates and the phone is suddenly bricked?? Seems silly and it's totally put me off buying another pixel device!

If you search loadimageandauth error in XDA search you'll find a few threads on it, was just doing that myself. Seems to point at a bootloader issue from what I've skimmed over so far which would tie in with that link I posted.
I'm not put off the pixels by these things, in the grand scale of things it's a very low average of devices it happens on so I guess you've just been unlucky. This is my 2nd pixel device ( had the pixel prior to this pixel 2) and most likely won't be my last pixel device.
Good luck with having another crack at the warranty
