[Q] Google Now Maps and URL actions not working - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

All,
I'm having an issue in googe now where some actions / links aren't working. Here's what happens:
For web links like the preview in a sports game card or search results, I get the message: "no app found to open URL"
For maps links, like "time to" cards. I get "Maps application is required to complete this action". Navigation works, though.
If I click a physical address from inside of Chrome, it goes to maps.
I'm running RebelROM senseless latest version with Apex launcher.
Any thoughts?
Thanks.
TIG.

never seen an issue like this before, myself. Have you tried clearing cache for google services framework?

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried this and the behavior remains the same. Grrrrr.

Maybe do a backup and fresh flash?
I'm on pacman rom original android 4.2.2 with latest gapps and cannot replicate your issue.

Thanks. I'm going to try that tonight. I wanted to post this in the forum for RebelROM, but don't have enough posts yet.
The thing is that I don't know if it happened when I flashed to the newest version of Rebel over the weekend, or if it was after I restored my Ti backups.
We'll see, I guess.

Reflash-a-palooza today yielded the same results. I'll just have to try a different image.

So, after several reinstalls, I was able to figure out that this happens when I install Chrome and Maps. If they aren't installed, the maps links will open in the default browser as will search links. Installing them breaks it. I might post this somewhere else.

Misnamed apps? Wrong versions? Fix here

Taking some advice I saw on the BAW forum one step further, I deleted the entire /data/boot-cache directory (after doing a nandroid backup of course).
Took about 3-4 extra minutes to boot up, presumably to recreate the contents of the directory, but now all of my apps are showing the correct version, correct icon, and correct name. Haven't run into any issues yet.
I didn't want to suggest this just in case something else would mess up. If you have a lot of bad apps this is perhaps faster than deleting each one.

Hey there you are! Hah.
I did have a lot of bad apps and had some trouble finding the proper directories for a few. I had just done a backup so I thought I'd give it a try.
I also figured this was the perfect place to suggest it for people to try - around here people are smart enough to do real backups before they start deleting things
Is this with just rooting the phone or after you install the custom rom?

I haven't touched the custom ROM yet. You do need to root the phone to do this, and it must be done from a shell.

It should, yes. I had a bunch of apps misnamed in that way (EasyMoney, Spades, a few others) and it fixed them.
One of them, Buka Lite, reverted back, though.
I tried this out and all the programs I'd been having issues with were fixed. I rebooted. Still fixed.
But then I installed three updates and after reboot, the same issue came back again. There must be another cache store somewhere...maybe Android Market related, or at least the Android package manager. Either way, I guess some more digging is in order.

I think there's just a bug with the way the phone handles the cache. Did the versions go back to what they were before you deleted the cache, or what they were after you deleted the cache and before you updated the apps?
Looks like the versions didn't revert. Last night, I used aTrackDog to send myself a list of all my apps. I can't remember the three that I updated today, but the two I do remember, Flixster Movies and Handcent did not revert.
Lastnight:
Movies,2.0.1
Handcent Sms,2.9.12
Now:
Movies,2.1.0
Handcent Sms,2.9.13
Well, I decided to remove Dolphin browser since I noticed it kept opening up and running in the background (active, at least that's what Taskiller says). Of course, the next reboot caused all the icons to get messed up again.
So, I thought to look for other cache directories. Does anyone think that deleting /data/dalvik-cache in addition to the /data/boot-cache directory might help? Is it safe to try it out? I'm assuming it'll just get repopulated automatically.

After you install any updates you will have to continue to remove the /data/boot-cache version until HTC/Sprint fixes the bug.

Damn. It sounded good in theory.
I had this issue with Google Sky Maps and it worked to let me back in. What was displaying after a day or so renamed itself to 'End User License Agreement' and wouldn't let me get past the EULA screen, only offering the option to force close.
The only caveat is that now Sky Maps is still named 'End User License Agreement', but it at least let's me in.
Odd
I tried removing both boot-cache and dalvik-cache. Didn't make any difference...eventually, the errors return if/when you update or install an app.
this must be a bug with the hero. i had the Moment and no apps renamed themselves at all. reset after reset the apps were fine. i reset my hero once and it messes up the apps
Doh! Doesn't seem like there's any easy perm fix in sight... hope it doesn't happen w/ 2.0 and Sense...

Post JB update Navigation/Maps crash

I have my bone stock VZ GS3 that got the official OTA for JB 4.1.1.
Since the update whenever I launch Navigation it will open, location lock, get desired directions, and usually crash within a few minutes.
I think it has something to do with Maps because when I check the Play Store, a lot of other GS3 users have been complaining of similar issues since the update.
Now is there anything that can be done on my end to possibly help? Or am I just stuck waiting for an update to the app?

Talked to a couple friends today who are on other ROMS and Nav/Maps works fine for them
Have you tried going into application manager, force stop, and clear data? If that doesn't work, I would reboot into recovery, wipe caches, and fix permissions,
I had a similar problem and this worked for me,

I have not tried that. Ill give it a shot, thanks!
I cant say ive experienced that exact problem, but since the OTA i have had a bunch of other bugs that werent present prior to the update. Many threads online about them also. Factory reset has helped some, but not all.
So I think the issue is still related to the JB update.
I did what HHF2 suggested and it didnt help. I have a couple friends running the latest milestone ROM from AOKP and their Maps/Nav works just fine.
So I rooted, unlocked, and ROM'd to the same one....only to continue to get force closes, to the point where within 2 blocks today, it closed 6 times..
Talking to one of the friends tonight, I found out that they never installed the official JB OTA, they went from ICS to the AOKP JB ROM. So that is bringing me back to think that something in the update screwed things up
Ok sooooooo
I flashed back using Odin to bone stock 4.0.4 Then rooted/unlocked BL/CWM. Then flashed the AOKP ROM and Gaaps, Nav/Maps STILL crashes
idk wtf is up
Try all of the following
Clear data for Maps
Clear data for Google Services Framework
Uninstall and Reinstall Maps and Naviation
Fix Permissions (custom recovery > advanced)
You could download an .apk for an older version of maps/nav to confirm if it's the latest release.
If all of that doesn't work and you still get Force Closes, then something deeper is going on. Download a logcat script capture (I use aLogCat) and post your results after replicating the FC. Hope this guidance helps you in some way. GL.

Did the 4 bullet points in that order. So far, things seem to be a bit better, but it still says "searching for GPS" but at the same time I dont get great service inside my house. So tonight when I head out ill see if I can get a GPS lock on.
Even before when it was "searching for GPS" I could move the map around zoom in/out and it would force close after just a few seconds. Its better because I can scroll around and it hasnt closed yet.
Thanks
Glad to hear there is some improvement!
Download an app called GPS Status. It will tell you how many Satellites you're locked onto, and you can download the aGPS patch fix.

Well now that I'm out of the house it has FC on my twice within 3mins
Think I'll try an older version APK. Any idea where to start my search for that?
I went back and read the GS3 reviews on Maps in the play store and a lot of ppl have the same issues
Sounds like it may be a bug in the latest version of GMaps.

I went to that site and downloaded a .zip file of a previous version. Do I just load the whole .zip file from CWM? I didnt see (may have missed it) any APKs, they all seemed to be market links or .zip
I also just installed aLogCat. Booted Navigation and after it crashed I opened LogCat and it said "reading logs, please wait" and nothing ever happened.

I assume you just need to unzip the file and there's an apk in there.
For aLogCat, make sure you hit the play button first off. Also, go into settings and make sure the level is set to "verbose"
Sent via SGS3 using Tapatalk
Already tried unzipping it but there are no APKs in there.
For aLogCat, it was already set to verbose and when I open the program it says its running and only has the "pause" button. If I hit pause, I can then hit play, but it doesnt do anything again.
Google Maps APK Links:
http://www.androiddrawer.com/6632/download-maps-6-12-0-app-apk/#.USKzelqY5b0
Current version is 6.14.2, if you look on the right-hand side you can see different versions. This link is for the last major release, 6.12.0.
I recommend clearing Google Maps data, uninstall, then install using the prev version release apk. If the FC's stop, then we can confirm that the problem is a bug in the latest update to the app. Good luck :good:

I honestly think its something with the JB update and not just Maps.. but then again idk why mine didnt work after using Odin to go back to 4.0.4

The crashed should cased by flash plugin, as no one will update stock browser for you, you can send a request to dolphin team, using the email left on the google play store: [email protected]. Add "Comes from XDA" mark may help.
Update? Hm, I am on CM10.1 RC5. Somehow I cannot believe I need to install nightly to get a stable browser. I tried stable CM10.0, same thing... I am thinking I need to wipe sdcard, because that is only thing I did not do. I changed kernels, CM versions, even Miui.. on all of then browser is crashing..

I have found some kernel/rom combos just can't deal with flash. I am very picky and spend an immence amount of time looking around at the most reliable combinations. My best luck (so far) with getting flash playing perfect, no fc and no graphical artifacts is SmoothROM 5.2 (motley kernel at standard settings) if you want to make sure everything has been done right the author also built a great little java applet that will clear all the proper caches and pushes your rom to the "sdcard" partition. I did a full backup and restored the last time and this thing runs so well.
I posted this in the wrong forum, whoops, well I guess I still have advice. Nightly ROMs are not as stable as cooked ROMs, and there will most likely be a really good one for your device that has cm as a base, paranoid/AOKP if you so desire. They tend to get a lot of bugs worked out that the big devs don't have time for.

[Q] Google Keyboard Issue

Hello,
Each day when I go into the Play Store to check for updates it tells me that 'Google Keyboard' has an update available. I go ahead and update but the next day it's asking me again to update. This has gone on for several days now. I'm sure there really isn't a update so often.
I have the Samsung Galaxy S3 (Verizon) with Goodness ROM v10.0.4.1. I really like this ROM and would hate to change but I may have to if this continues.
Any help would be really appreciated.
Thanks,
Bruce
Hi there,
I had a similar issue running mastamoon's unofficial 4.3 build for CyanogenMod 10.2, and even on his unofficial CM 10.1 build.
What I ended up doing, as I recall, was completely uninstalling the app and reinstalling it from the play store. I also have Swype installed on my GS3 (currently running the above unofficial 4.3 CM), so I've stuck with that for the 'mo, but try removing the app altogether and reinstalling to see if that helps.
Do you have any other apps installed, such as Titanium Backup or ROM Manager?

Strange. When I look in the Play Store, Google Keyboard is listed there, and I do have the uninstall option on my phone. Try that first, but if you have no joy, proceed below:
If you have TiBU (even the free version, as I recall), you can go to the Backup/Restore tab and scroll down to Google Keyboard.
Long press that, and then you'll be presented with the following options below:
In the first picture (on the left that ends in 47_1.png) are the initial options that appear in TiBU. Swipe left (if you need to) to see something similar to the picture on the right (that ends in 54_1.png).
Right there is the uninstall option, which should work.
Once that's successful, you should be able to re-download the app from the Play store.
Also, a reboot may be necessary after the titanium backup option, if you had to go that route, just fyi.

Hello,
Google Keyboard is listed in the Play Store. I uninstalled it and then I noticed that it said that there was an update available. It sounds like this app is part of the OS and can't be removed. I have no idea what to do at this point short of trying a different ROM.
Thanks for helping.

Hey,
I uninstalled the keyboard and immediately it says that there is an update available in the Play Store. I did as you suggested by going into Settings/Apps/All but the program is not there. The same with Tit BU...the file is not there. Can't understand why the OS is staying that there is an update with the program being gone?
Thanks,

That's very strange indeed. The only other possibility I could think of, is to switch to another ROM (the CyanogenMod official nightlies have always been good to me), but if you're feeling daring, there's always the unofficial builds from @mastamoon that I linked to a few replies back.
There's also a possibility of finding the actual app in some long-buried system folder. If you use ES File Explorer with root access enabled, try searching for Google keyboard or any combination thereof, and deleting that way.
What about making a backup of your current installation, re-flashing your current ROM, and then wiping the dalvik/cache/etc? If you need to restore anything after that, use TiBU to restore only the app information instead of the data (you'll most likely lose information such as high scores and whatnot from the games you have installed).
You could also switch to another keyboard entirely, such as SwiftKey, Swype or a myriad of others available on the play store, and set that as your default.

TwistingSoul,
Last night I configured SwiftKey (paid version) and set it as my default keyboard. This morning when I turned on my S3 and checked for any updates in the Play Store, The Google Keyboard did NOT show up! I think my problem has been solved, thanks to you! I really appreciate your assistance.
BTW, what other ROM's would you consider to very good, besides Goodness? What do you think of JellyBam? I tried it (v9.1) but my camera froze up so I removed it. I would like to give it a try again sometime.
Have a good Sunday!
Bruce
Way to go! You did all of the hard work, so kudos to you.
As far as your ROM question, I've only ever run CyanogenMod, and various AOKP variants thereof. Hope you can find something that suits your needs.

[Q] Play Store Error on Lollipop

I'm running DH's Lollipop ROM and the Play store has been giving me -505 errors when I try to install certain applications. It is not during the download period, just when the app attempts to install itself. This happens with APKs as well. Is it an issue of Lollipop compatibility? I'm trying to download Chronus in particular.

Make sure that you did a clean install of the rom. If you were in TWRP there is a advanced wiping tab. Try wiping internal data (that does not wipe external sd card). This is probably a fix. If using some other recovery it should come with a similar feature. Hope this helped

I had the same issue but only with apps that I attempted to restore with Titanium. I had to do a full data wipe and reflash to be able to install those apps again.

Yea I did and it just hangs up on that restore until I FC the app and deselect from restore. With the ROM I'm using Chronus (for example) is an optionally app to be installed and it installs that way but isn't the most up to date version and the update from the Play Store doesn't install either. Weird issues for sure.

I have flashed the ROM and love it except this issue that I am also experiencing. I also have TiBu but did not use it for the app restore. Rather I used Google Play and it failed to install Any.do. I have tried manually and read extensively online and the problem appears to be related to Adobe air not being Lollipop compatible. I finally email Anydo and they are aware of the issue and are providing me with a link to their upcoming lollipop beta. My point is I don't believe reflashing, re-restoring, or rummaging around in the data/data folder will fix the 505 error.
