Moko Ultra Slim Lightweight Smart-Shell [Review] - Galaxy Note 8.0 (Tablet) Accessories

Like I said in my other reviews, I haven't found a case that I love. So I went ahead about bought yet another and this time it's the Moko Ultra Slim Lightweight Smart-Shell- and it finally arrived yesterday. I gave it a whirl for the day and decided to write this review.
First thing's first- the case was cheap- I picked mine up for $4.95 (free shipping for Amazon Prime or $25). However at the time of this review, it's price has gone up to $8.99. It also comes with 11 other colors- though anything other than black will cost you $12.99.
The case while at a low price point feels quite premium at hand. Unlike the Moko Folio, this one feels great and the leather actually feels like it's real (it's definitely not though). While having a solid feel, it still manages to keep thin and fits nicely into your jean's back pocket (at least it does for mine).
Finally, the camera is slightly recessed into the case, which is a plus since it was a bump on the back. The magnet is strong and this case does support the sleep/wake function. Unlike the Moko Folio I had in the other thread, the magnets are well hidden in the cover. To keep it closed, the case itself has a magnet (it's shown in one of the pics below- looks like 2 metal slits on the bezel) where the company logo's silver tab latches onto. Overall, I love this case a lot- the best of the 3 I have.
The only caveat I find with this case is that 1- when it's resting on the table with the cover folded as a triangle, the angle is a little lower than I'd like it. I like to have cases actually lift the tablet a little higher up and 2- if this were to drop on it's bottom, it would most likely be damaged. To keep the slim profile, the bottom bevel is very thin and doesn't serve well to protect. But if you're careful with your electronics and use this to throw in your bag, this case is definitely for you! I give it an 8/10.
Pros
-Inexpensive
-Super slim, looks great- lightweight as well
-Sleep/Wake function (though a lot of folios have this)
-Comes in 12 different colors
-Camera is recessed
-Strong magnet keeps the cover closed
Cons
-Bottom bevel could be slightly thicker to protect from drops
-Folded cover doesn't give the tablet much angle when it's on the table

Thanks for sharing your review! I've been interested in this case.
I may have more thoughts and/or questions later, but at the moment I just have the following observation...

I've noticed this problem with multiple cases for the Note 8 and I think it is because of the speakers (I believe that is what the two slots are). The easiest way for a case to not cover the speakers is to just do a half-height or quarter-height lip. But with that, the usb port and then the S-Pen in the corner you end up with very little coverage for the bottom of the Note when holding it in portrait orientation. Even the official Samsung Book Cover case suffers from this same deficiency. I'm guessing this design element of the Note was either an oversight or a compromise. But regardless I suspect this is a problem most Note 8 cases will suffer from.

Ah I understand that. Was hoping it would have been thicker though!

Looks like a nice case. Anyway, personally I try to avoid cases with magnets. In fact I bought some and removed the magnets. I tried few case with magnets with my Note 8.0 and I think it was the sleep magnet that messed up screen a bit. When case was folded back I wasn't able to use Pen in that point where the magnet was. Another problem with one case what also with the sleep magnet. When ever I folded the case back the screen closed. So no matter case closed or folded back screen always closes.. convenient

Oh yeah, I do see what you're saying there! So not only is there not much coverage (on the bottom edge), but what is there is much thinner than some of the case edges elsewhere on the case. That is unfortunate!

I have this exact same case. On Mine, the cover seems to overextend the tablet by 2-3mm, which is really weird. or in another words the cover seems a little too big? Is yours like that? perhaps i should ask for exchange.

Do you mean the corners like in the last picture posted? I have the same case and although at the moment I like this case best, it also bugs me that three corners extend further up than the tablet. It may be designed that way for extra protection.

Good evening! Thank you for your amazing review. I think this is the case for my note 8 but I just want to confirm that it fits the 5110 model (wifi only). The description on Amazon only says the 5100. I'm assuming yes but I just want to confirm before I order it. Thanks in advance.

Just got the case in the mail today, fits my wifi only model like a glove! The body of each model are identical besides the speaker slit on the 3g version I believe. Regardless, case fits perfectly.

I just ordered one at $8.99. I currently have the Samsung cover, but I can't justify $50 for something like that, so it's going back.

I ordered the KLD case, will let u know how it is when it arrives.

Yea even if it's slightly more expensive than what I paid, I think this case is great. I've been using it for a week now and I honestly can't complain. The cover does feel like it's bigger than the case as someone mentioned but it's really kind of an illusion because of the exposed corner for the pen.

yea man...I really suggest you either try to cancel your order or dispute it. There's definitely no sleep/wake function on that case. If you go to my review thread- there's other people there that bought the case and can also confirm that it doesn't have that function and that it isn't because I received a defective unit

Just got this case. I really like it, but I'm curious what others think of the magnets that hold the cover closed on the right side? They seem pretty strong and I'm wondering if extended exposure to these magnets could cause problems for the device. What do you guys think?

There are some strong opinions about the dangers of magnets in cases in the following thread, beginning with #21:

I think they're definitely worth reading.

moko cases suck..very cheap and thin
plus the metal can possibly scratch the screen

I've had the official book cover case which does have a magnet in it and no issues..

That's great--thanks for adding helpful experience to the discussion!

I have the MOKO and it is the favorite out of 3 cases.
Light and doesn't add much to the Note.
No problems with the magnets and I like the feature.

Yea, perhaps the magnets are too strong in 3rd party cases, so lesson is to stick with OEM cases if you have a s-pen
I wonder if this is an issue for Note 1, and note 2 products as well

Case for a contractor ?

I think I'm about to inherit my wife's Nexus 4 since I'm giving her BB Z10 to try out and I need some sort of case.
I'm a contractor so I need some kind of case/pouch with clip on to my belt that would keep my phone secure.
I have Iphone 3 and use otterbox defender and I hated the case ever since I got it, bulky and looks like I'm carrying a satellite phone
Any recommendations ?
Mybat is your best bet. Its bulky, but bulky provides good protectiin

I got a seidio active today and I'm happy with it. I'm a glazier and I work new commercial buildings, etc. Its tough enough.
The Seido cases seem like the only ones I can find with good phone protection and a hard shell covering the screen, which is exactly what I want. I especially like the Convert model. I can't speak for bulkiness, but that is not a priority for me. Unfortunately they are just way too expensive; $70 for a piece of plastic....come on. I am surprised that someone has not come out with a cheap knockoff, but then again the availability of accessories for the Nexus 4 is pretty pitiful. I ordered a poorly rated Amzer case in the meantime just to have hard shell screen protection until a better case comes along.
The one thing missing the cases that are being sold by brand named companies is rubber flaps could cause covering the headphone jack and the USB port to prevent dust or humidity from getting in there. There are only two cases that have this and they are both on ebay.
I have this one and it already saved by phone from a fall off my bike! They also have them in other colors, and you can't beat the price!

This one right here appears to be the most heavy duty case I've seen for the Nexus 4, it even has a cover for the speaker! And again it's for an amazing price and a lot of color choices!

Just because the case is made by a popular brand, it doesn't mean it's really that good, look at how many disappointed Otterbox user are there. For what is worth; these cases are worth a shot!

I like the first one you posted, the only thing is that I'm not sure if it will support wireless charging
I'm using a ballistic case. There isn't any covers over the ports, but I've dropped it several times and no issues have come of it.
I work in a kitchen and have slammed the back of the case into stainless steel tables on accident (screen is always towards my leg) with no issues.
It also works well with the charging orb. The back of the case helps the grip of the orb.

This case does work with wireless charging on my orb. It may be a little sensitive with the height range ( the inductive ring is a little below center on the phone). It does work though and does not slide. This case really doesn't get enough credit for what it is. It's not as thick as it looks and isn't too bad with pocket lint.
That other case looks good, but I can't tell if it's a 2 piece design or just 1 piece. If it's one piece TPU I might be a little concerned with scratching up the chrome bezel with sharp corners. This case does appear to be a little too thick for wireless charging.

I didn't notice that; Is there is a hard plastic cover that protects the entire screen as part of the holster? If so, I would definitely pick one up.
Also, is the top and bottom of the phone protected as I see other cases where that is completely exposed?
Finally, I would appreciate it if you could give me the dimensions, especially the width as installed on the phone. I want to get the proper mount that has enough range to accept the width.
Thanks.

The case it 2.9 inches wide by 5.5 in tall by 0.65 in thick or 74 x 140 x 17 mm. And if I understand correctly the hard plastic corners do wrap around to the top and bottom slightly, but there is not exactly hard plastic in the middle of the top and bottom.
Just FYI, I messaged a seller about that second ebay case with the port covers and it's a one piece TPU so it probably isn't as nice of a fit or as shock absorbing. It also looks to be a little thicker on the back surface.
Yeah, the hard plastic only wraps around d to the front in six areas, all corners and in the middle on the sides. If you want some pictures let me know. The case is much slimmer than it appears and much less bulky then the mybat but at the same time it probably offers a little less protection because the mybat has hard plastic on the front.

Thanks tomhub389 and jlear3, I am going to order one.
I used a Seidio Active with the holster for my SGH-T989, Galaxy SII, and loved it. Add to it, while I was removing the phone from the case/skeleton I managed to break a corner off. I sent in a pic of the damage to Seidio and they sent me a brand new skeleton and soft shell at no charge with no questions asked. That's a damn good warranty if you ask me. Long story short, I have a Seidio Active on my Nexus 4 now. Also, they work with wireless charging.

2 Suggestions
First case I got was a Ionic Guardian. It was $5 shipped, and very nice for the money. Some don't like the weird pattern on back, but I got this so if I drop it or something, it doesn't get hurt http://www.amazon.com/Ionic-GUARDIAN-Armor-Google-Nexus/dp/B00A06Z41E
Just ordered this one because it has the dust covers built in, and a kickstand. I hope to use this as the daily driver. The Ionic was amazing in quality for $5, and I hope this new one matches that quality: http://www.amazon.com/BoxWave-Resolute-OA3-Nexus-Case/dp/B000LGBZR0
The kickstand and slightly better looks are a bonus.

Moko Case [Updated]

I purchased the Moko case on Amazon that's 5.99 (free shipping for $25+ orders or amazon prime). My first impression was that it was rather cheaply made. Then again, you're paying 6 bucks for a case. I don't expect it to last long either- the corners are starting to show signs of wear and tear after only a weekend in my messenger bag (see pic below).
I bought the white one as you can see, but in reality, it comes as a very dull white color, almost grayish. The feel of the case isn't very sturdy. Since it is "white" it is prone to getting dirty pretty quickly, as it already has picked up some other colors from sitting inside my messenger bag.
I really like that there's a band for you to slip your hand in while reading. This is especially useful if you're on the train and you have your hand slipped through the strap (no one can take it from you easily and it won't fall out of your hands should you fall asleep). I also like that there's a second strap in the back, to hold the cover to the back so you don't have the cover flapping around.
The insides is a felt like material, with 2 memory card slots (I don't understand why they're there because the Note 8.0 doesn't read SD cards). It also has a pen loop as well. As someone mentioned in another thread, it appears that the bulk of Amazon's covers have an added loop on it. The loop is on the back so it's not intrusive. I do intend on getting the S-Pen w/ the eraser on top, so perhaps that pen loop would come in handy. The case like every other, also doubles as a stand for reading or for typing.
What really bothers me about this case is the insides where the top and the bottom doesn 't taper to the tablet and kind of bulges out a bit- I'm referring to the picture below w/ the Samsung logo- you can see that the case sticks out and not flat against the tablet. It's not a functional flaw but more of a cosmetic one.
All in all, it's only an average case- I'd give it a 6/10, any questions or if anyone needs more pictures, let me know.
Also I forgot to mention- this case does support the sleep/wake functionality.
I also bought a KDL Case and it's currently shipping. Once I receive the KDL case, I'll write another review. The KDL case can be found here:

UPDATE
Just an update on this case. I've been using it since I posted this review and now from the pic, you can see that one of the "hinges" (I guess you can say) already broke. Like I said in my review, this should only be a temporary solution for a nicer case you have on the way- PLEASE SEE POST #12 FOR PIC

Yeah, MOKO always have very low price cases. If you want a case just do the basic job, you might go for. If you want a good case, I would rather to stay away from it.

The KDL case looks nice from the pics. I wonder about what the texture feels like, and also about the strength of the stitching where the cover attaches to the back. It looks from the pictures like the cover might get stressed a bit at that point when you fold the cover tightly around the back (and/or when creating the triangle fold for the tablet stand functionality), but it is hard to tell for sure from just images. I also like that the same triangle fold is used for both tablet angles as that seems like it might be more secure/sturdy than the Samsung Book Cover seems to be (especially for the mostly upright angle, according to some reports).

It is nice to see that there might be some decent options to the official Samsung Book Cover as $50 feels a bit exorbitant.

Well that sucks.... but thanks for the update! I look forward to the review nonetheless!
I got this case as a temporary solution to protect my device (since Samsung products are fragile) and honestly I can't complain! $5.99 is a great price and the case does everything it should. I knew getting a white one would get dirty far more frequently so I went with black instead. I haven't seen any noticeable signs of wear yet but the flaps which hold the device in place are a little raised.
I'll probably wait for a more premium case to be released before I purchase another, but for now this one works great. I only wish it had some way to stand it up in portrait.

The card slots are too small for an SD card. They will hold the micro-SD card which the Note 8 does read.
The slots might hold sim cards for the non-US Note (I'm in US so my Note doesn't take a sim card).

I bought a different MOKO case only paid $12 for three different cases. Super Cheap, I wouldn't expect the quality to be top notch on any case that costs, as cheap as, these cases. Any way for the price though, I can buy several if the craftsmanship goes bad. Anyway here are the pics of the MOKO case I like the best.

It was $59.99 They weren't going to sell them til tomorrow launch but I argued because the website said they were in stock today at my local sore. Which is why I drive out there.
Could you tell me, that the back cover of s-view is the same as the normal S4 back cover ? Or It's thicker ?
There is another thread open that shows the two back covers. The s-view cover is a hair thicker.

The S-View Cover Linked in the OP is not the Samsung S-View Cover. I believe all conversation about buying one from best buy and such is about the Official S-View Cover. Just a heads up for anyone who didn't click the link.
YAH the reason i bought the one from amazon is because it comes with a kickstand.

I received my tridea s view case from Amazon, and it fits the phone perfectly. However, I'm not thrilled with the case. Here's my take:
The good: the s view feature works great, better than anticipated, and the case does a nice job of standing the phone up horizontally. The case is thin, and doesn't add much bulk at all. I like the color (I got the blue case).
The bad: the case feels cheap, almost like cardboard. I suppose this might be partly to make it thin, but I don't like the feel of it. Also, there is no protection whatsoever for the corners of the phone. I had hoped that the part that holds the phone in would come around the corners, but it doesn't. What is a case for, other than to protect the phone from drops and scratches? This case provides poor protection. Also, the cover doesn't stay closed, it just flaps around.
I'll keep using this case until someone comes up with a better s view option. I'm sure there will be more knock-offs as time goes on.

I just received my tridea s view case from Amazon today and yah the only flaw in my opinion is the corners, i like i just thought it would have more protection for corners but its fits nicely and the black looks nice. Plus i love the kickstand thats a major plus for me.

You can get it for $40 on Amazon now.
Would you recommend this case? I like it from the pictures but is it really low quality? How about plastic cover? Is it soft plastic or could damage metal sides? Thanks...

Tech21 D3O Impact Maze Case

Hi Guys,
I cancelled my pre-order for the Spigen Neo Hybrid as it was taking far too long to arive (expected from Amazon UK was towards the end of May) So I decided to go ahead and try the Tech21 Impact Maze case, which I picked up from eBay UK for about 20 quid. Thought I would do a little review just to let you all know what I think so far...
OK, so when I was looking for a case, I wanted something that was going to offer a bit more protection from drops than the Case-Mate Barely There I had on my S2, but didn't want anything too bulky. I definitely didn't want anything that looked remotely like an Otterbox!
Initial impressions when looking at the Tech21 website, all the cases are somewhat transparent, and you can see the D30 material in all of them (apart from the Impact Snap range, which looked a bit too bulky with all the cutouts). I didn't really like the look of it, but the technology behind the D3O material looked very promising, and from watching a couple of youtube videos, its safe to say that employees at Tech21 definitely have faith in their products! Watch THIS and you'll see what I mean. This stuff is used in body armour and bulletproof vests and everything... pretty remarkable stuff really!
Anyways, I gave it a shot and it arrived this morning. Upon seeing it, it looks much darker than the images made it look (I bought the smoky version, on a Black Mist S4) and it actually looks pretty good. Still not keen on the orange bits, but you can't have everything! The fit seems great, not particularly tight to get on, but the phone doesn't move around inside it, and there are no noticeable loose bits. The case is make from smooth, soft plastic, so it feels really nice to hold, but shouldn't be so grippy that it makes it awkward to get out of your pocket. It does add some bulk (about 3mm around each side, 2mm on the back), but still feels nice to use.
I had read reports that the buttons can feel very stiff. Fortunately, I've found that while they do feel different to using them without a case, they're still pretty responsive.
The lip on the front doesn't seem to foul my screen protector, but glass ones might cause issues due to the extra thickness, which I guess will be a consideration with most cases.
All the cutouts are lined up perfectly, standard headphone plugs should fit no problem, and the hole for the USB cable should support most standard size connectors too.
All in all, I'm pretty happy with it, would be happy to recommend the case if you're looking for something similar, and happy to recommend the seller I bought it from HERE. I ordered this late Monday night, Dispach email came through early tuesday morning and it arrived by first class royal mail today. Couldn't be happier!
Will get some snaps up of the phone in the case as soon as I have something to take them with

I love those D3O Tech21 cases... we had the guy come into our office with the D3O putty and a hammer. You can push maybe a centimeter of the stuff around your finger, then hammer it like mad without feeling anything - just don't miss and hit your finger dead on! Magical stuff for sure, glad to hear that the Maze case looks better in person than it does in the pictures.

Ok but my only question, is;
If this stuff is so good why is it only around the edges of the phone?
Thacounty - there are LOADS of videos all over YouTube of very similar things, as well as the same guy (who I think must be the CEO of Tech21) throwing phones around HARD!!
I suspect they only put it around the edges as impact force her is higher (lower surface area means same force on a smaller area)

Its also being tested in bulletproof vests (by BAE Systems no less...) as its energy absorption properties are higher than that of Kevlar apparently!

This Tech21 case is around 7.7mm width-wise, definitely comfortable in one hand.
I'm still trying to decide whether or not to keep this or to go for an Otterbox Commuter when it comes out...I'm impressed by the impact protection advertisements, but I've had an Otterbox for my last two devices and it's definitely tried and true.
OK one last thing is really bothering me and the only reason I haven't ordered this yet. I feel like the front lip is too small... I have a diztronic less then 10$ case on my galaxy nexus right now and that has a nice sized front lip... Already ordered a MIME glass screen protector but if this thing falls on its face I wanna protect that beautiful screen..

Hey, I got my case yesterday evening. Even took some photos with my camera however didn't get a chance to upload them. Will try this evening.
Overall case is quite nice. Fits the phone well, is quite slim however due to substantial protection on the sides it does add considerably to the width and height of phone. Comparing to neo-hybrid it's a little taller, a millimeter or two wider and only slightly thicker however I feel a lot more confident of dropping it in this than the neo-hybrid.
Cutouts for ports are all perfect with a decent charging cutout so it fits all my chargers. Nice grip with the case. The Mesh on the back does look quite nice with the textured s4 back.

[Q] Poetic Slimline or Moko Ultra Slim?

I've looked at many cases and I've narrowed it down to these two:
http://www.amazon.ca/Nexus-Case-Slimline-Synthetic-Manufacturer/dp/B00O3JA8AQ
http://www.amazon.ca/Google-Nexus-Case-Lightweight-Smart-shell/dp/B00J2QUWTW
Has anyone had hands-on experience with either of these, and can you please tell me your thoughts on them? I've heard good things about the Poetic cover and in Droid-Life's Nexus 7 2013 comparison of the two, the Moko case seemed to not keep shut as well, and the three folds wouldn't magnetically snap into a stand properly. The Poetic case seems better in that regard. However, the Moko case for the Nexus 9 seems to be much revised in design, so I'm wondering if it's much better now. Also, in the pictures the sides look shiny. Are they metal? Or just really shiny plastic? How do they both feel? Hopefully not too plasticky and cheap. About the price, why is the Moko case's original cost so much higher? Is it really worth that much/that much better? Looks almost identical to me.
My main concern is actually just something to cover up the back so the camera won't get scratched. Much like the Nexus 5, these cameras that stick out frustrate me to no end. I don't care at all for drop protection, corners, sides, etc. Overall, all I want is something that can cover front and back (and does it well! so front must stay shut), be as thin as possible, and feels good.
moko ultra slim
The moko ultra slim is too tight and excacerbates light bleeding ( my N9 is not bad in that respect), and since it is hard plastic it can warp the tab and make the issue permanent.Going to try the moko folio next which is leatherette and from past experience stretches to fit the tab just right.
I have the Moko slim one and its pretty nice.
Looking at the Poetic one, it looks like a clone or carbon copy of the Moko one I have. The only difference I can tell is that the cutouts are a bit different.
On the Poetic one, the cutout on the bottom for the MicroUSB are much wider than they need to be, and on the volume/on/off cutout, the angle of the cutout are more right-angeled compared to the the curved cutout on the Moko

How does the moko one feel? Does it feel "premium"? Does the cover stay in place when shut, and does the stand snap into place? Also, do you feel it's too tight and causing light bleeding or warping the tablet like the other guy? Thanks!

It feels pretty good and feels fairly premium but that'll be very subjective. I will tell you that it feels no less premium than holding the tablet bare with no case.
The cover has no issue staying closed if you flip the tablet upside down, but it will open if you give it a shake while you're only hanging onto the backside, but I don't expect this to be an issue under normal use.
When you fold the cover into the triangle position as a stand it stays put pretty well. The magnet in the flap actually magnetically links itself to the other end of the case when in the triangle position so it feels pretty secure.
It doesn't cause any more backlight bleeding compared to without it. The case is pretty tight though when trying to take it out. If you're not careful, it could separate one of the corners of your tablet. This is what happend to me the first time i took it out, but the corner snapped back into place without any issues.

Well, the designs look near identical, so I don't know if the Poetic case will be any different in terms of tightness.

All the slim cases poetic, moko etc. are exactly the same in terms of design so I doubt one brand is better than other apart from a unit variation in which one case may be less tight than the other. I think given the exact match between then different brands IVSO, poetic and moko they are all made by the same factory in china with different shops' labels to sell on ebay and amazon. Just my $0.02, I would rather get something bulky than risk damage to the tablet.

This is the case with many slim hard plastic cases for phones/tablets including slim cases from big name brands like Spigen and rearth, not just from cheapo brands like poetic, moko, and IVSO.
Partly to blame though is the design of the Nexus 5 and 9 design which has sides that concave outwards which makes it more difficult to remove the case. I had a Rearth slim case for my Nexus 5 that was even harder to take out and separated a corner of my cover as well.
I have the poetic and ivso ones. They are different in subtle but important ways. Poetic is better since the magnets are not exposed in the sides of the case. In the past when exposed the magnets would pull out of the sockets they were glued into. Poetic will not do this.

If the Poetic is anything like the Moko case, which I expect it is, then the magnets on the cover are attracted to the magnets built into the Nexus 9.
I have always thought that it was pretty redundant then that the IVSO has the magnets on the case. However after thinking about it, I can see a benefit of having the magnets on the case itself: It would probably reduce how much the cover shifts around when in the closed position and it probably has a more secure closure. Just a guess.

Do you feel the poetic cover is too tight, like people have said about the Moko one? And what about the IVSO one? I'm not too sure about IVSO (never heard the brand before) but the Amazon reviews seem to be good. Also is the metal thing on the cover any risk to the display? I feel that if I close the lid just slightly off it's going to smash into the display.
Both poetic and ivso are tight but that more likely due to the design of the nexus and its back, which extends slightly past the front. Just have to be very careful removing the case so it doesn't snap the back plate off. I don't like the metallic tab on the ivso... Feel like it could rub and scratch the screen. This is one of the reasons I prefer poetic.
The poetic is nice. I finally got it and it comes on and off pretty easily. Not as easy as the n7, but not bad.

Thank you, and no warping or additional backlight bleed?
I have the moku case and the poetic slimline case . They are identical. I really can't tell any differences at all.
