Just rooted my phone - HTC Pico (Explorer)

Do I have to factory reset in recovery and does factory reset result in Bootloop,
Do I have to Superwipe.
Or do this individually:
Format/wipe data
Wipe cache
Wipe dalvik cache in advance(menu)
Format SD ext, system, boot, in mounts and storage.

What do you wan't to do with the phone, factory reset from menu will get you to bootloop for sure, doing it from recovery...... it's 50/50. But why do you want to do this?
If you want to change the rom, then just follow the instructions for it, so please do tell, what is your goal.

I just rooted my phone today this is first time I'm installing a Custom Rom.
There is an Instruction in the Rom I want to install. Do factory reset (While in Recovery I think.)

Just flash superwipe first, after that, the rom and something else if needed, if you are going for sense4, manually wipe everything from recovery, except the sd.
And that's it,......... uuu one more thing, backup your messages with some app, if you have important ones.

Thanks for the info!
Yeah I'm going with sense4.
Last question what is the minimum memory card size in doing the partition, I have a 4GB Micro SD is that enough?

Personally I haven't tried sense 4 (neither of them), but from what I read, you need at least 1GB ext3 or ext4(if I'm wrong somebody to correct me). And that's it. If you don't know how to make a partition check out my signature, there should be tutorial about that.

So what is the Custom Rom your using maybe I'll use that.

I'm on aokp (by legen_dary), but that's irrelevant, if you like sense, give it a try, sense roms are cool, they are just not my cup of beer. And whatever you choose to install, should be something that you like, anyway installation process for 95% of roms(sense or no sense) is pretty much the same, so if sense got your atention, go for it!

Ok thanks man you really made my day!

+1 to whatever shortyoko said upto now.. And one more point to be added iz that use yannou's recovery ( r recovery in jaggy jaggs tutorial) for flashing sense roms as they mount sd ext while flashing properly.. Other recoveries have some issues.. Though I tried with twrp to flash build 6.. And it worked..
I'm on my tab

Thank you for that Red Devil!

Stuck in a bootloop
I searched a lot on the forum tried going back to the stock ROM, but still stuck in bootloop need help

[Rom] CM9 Barely Alpha ***UPDATED OP***

To Flash****UPDATED******
- Boot into safestrap
-Select safe system
-toggle safe system on
(It seems we have an issue wiping the safe strap /data and /cache so these additional steps are needed for now)
-quick toggle safe system off *****MUST BE A QUICK TOGGLE*****
-wipe data/factory reset
(To be safe wipe the following)
-Wipe Cache partition
-format /system
-wipe dalvik cache (Found a bug in safestrap that prevents us from wiping dalvik cache see thread)
-quick toggle safe system on *****MUST BE A QUICK TOGGLE*****
Now, flash the rom. (Selecting external Sdcard)
Safestrap works alot like a dual boot, so you can always return to your stock system by simply disabling safestrap in the safe boot menu.

This is ics for the droid 3 by hashcode, same guy that gave us permission to unofficially port and support safestrap. It does boot and work on our phones.
This is what i know for sure right now
-Wifi works
-Most tasks and apps work
-market is broken
-calling/texting is broken, looks like its stuck on cdma?
-accelerometer is broken
What I'd like to see from here is some one willing to take over my project on this rom. I have a few of my own flash able zips complied with various tweaks to hopefully be able to make and receive calls, no success yet. I will keep trying but this is a project better suited for some one who is not so new to the linux environment. (I just got my first linux box 2 weeks ago)

Great work !!! Thank you very much!!! Waiting the update!!
Don't we need the source code for the Atrix 2 to make this work?
I've followed all the steps in safestrap, got it working, except mounting SD (is that expected?), but after I flash the CM9 zip while in safe mode, I reboot and get stuck with a black screen. Anyone else get this working? It seems to flash rather fast which seems abnormal to me.
I agree that this Alpha 4 is stuck on CDMA. If anyone has gotten 3g to work, please let me know how you did it. I tried entering their little trick *#*#4636#*#*, rebooted, wiped cache and dalvik like they said and still nothing.

Have you tried replacing /system/lib/hw, /system/etc/bluetooth, /system/etc/firmware, and /system/etc/ppp, and /system/etc/wifi, with the directories from our ROM, also try replacing /system/app/TelephonyProviders.apk, with the one from our ROM?
That might actually work. That is what I have done for the one I am working on, we shall see how far that gets me..... I had read someplace, that those are very important, right after the radio image, for proper hardware operation on a phone with another ROM.

Why can't I get this to boot? I go into safestrap, put it on safemode, wipe all the necessary things, flash the zip, reboot, and I get a black screen. If I take it off safe mode it goes back to my stock ROM successfully.

Try this. Using safestrap, make a Full backup Including webtop to be safe. then disable safe mode and factory reset, then wipe dalvik cache, then format /system, then wipe /data, enable safe mode, flash it, and let me know.

Alright I'm trying it as we speak. So is the SD card currently unmountable in safestrap? If I do a backup while in safemode, won't that backup the safemode ROM, which is the CM9 one I can't get to work? I don't really understand how the safemode/no safemode works. I was under the impression that my stock ROM is under no safemode so anything I do with safemode off will effect that (meaning when I do the format and wipes you're talking about it would do that to my stock ROM), then when I turn safemode on everything I do effects the other ROM. Can you clarify for me?

Not exactly..... safestrap knows which ROM is your stock system, and which one is the "safestrap". It calls your stock rom /systemorig or something similar, and then when in safe mode, it will mount the stock system to /systemorig and back that up as well as /system, which will be the CM9 rom, that is why you had to partition your card a certain way, to make this work right.

Ah thanks for the explanation. So, when you backup it does a backup of both system and systemorig, both roms, how do you go about wiping one rom and not the other? Am I correct in saying if you have safemode off and do wipes/restores it will do that to your stock rom, but if it's on it will do it to the systemorig one, then backing up with it off does a backup of stock rom, and when it's on it backs up both?

Safestrap will only allow you to wipe your non safe data. it will not let you wipe your safe system aka "stock rom".

Awesome. Sorry for all of the questions, I'm familiar with CWM, but this is new territory for me. I really appreciate it. I'm doing the steps you provided. Am I basically doing a complete backup, complete wipe of both ROMs, then trying to install CM9 on the safe partition?
EDIT: I don't want to clutter this thread with questions about safestrap so I'll take any further questions to it's thread. Thanks again.

No, you will only be making changes to the safestrap ROM, not the system ROM.... The backup will currently only be the stock ROM. now if when you enable safestrap do a backup, then disable safestrap, while in safestrap and taking a backup, you can backup the "safetrap" ROM, not the system ROM....
Now if you follow the directions in the original post, you will end up with two bootable ROMs on your phone. you really are only interested in the safestrap one right now, so doing the backup before flashing will ONLY backup the stock ROM. and you will not wipe the stock ROM either so to speak, because you can "dual" boot both ROMs by enabling and disabling the safestrap.

Ah okay okay, I think I understand how it works now. I've tried the steps in the OP and the ones faber mentioned and I'm still getting a blank black screen after reboot. How long should it take to flash the CM9 zip? It takes like 6-10 seconds for me and from my experience that's rather short for a ROM. Could the zip have gotten corrupted?

[Q] First time flashing NS i9023 (serious flasher from SGS,SGS2)

Hey!
First let me say that I know all about flashing SGS and SGS2. Im a proud owner of SGS1 from day 1.
Last week I decided to finally flash my brothers i9023 so I flashed stock 4.0.3 with stock recovery. Then we wanted to flash some XDA stuff and I don't understand these guides...
I found one guide where you get superuser access with one click and usb cable, I did that, then I flashed CWM through Rom manager and flashed 4.0.4 from evilisto (v1.1) and it worked. Now I'm trying to flash some others, like nuhetri reloaded or pixel rom and I'm always getting stuck at boot animation. It just keeps "working" and nothing happens for 5+ minutes.
What am I doing wrong? Please help!
Best Regards
Luka
(in general)in recovery wipe data factory reset, format cache, davlik cache, system, boot. then flash new rom.
with nuhetri i think there is a bug where your not supposed to wipe data coming from another rom only davlik cache and cache then flash nuhetri

Hey and thanks for such quick reply!
I did all these now, rebooted to recovery (from CWM) and flashed this Fully Touched:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1411734
Its stuck at boot image for 5 minutes now.
What now?
your using updated version of cwm? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22044793&postcount=82
steps
put rom on sd card
reboot into cwm recovery
wipe data, cache, davlik cahe, and format system and boot
install zip from sd card
choose rom you put on sd card
should say install from sd complete or something like that
reboot system now
let it boot into new rom (should not take more than 3-5 min)
edit: just seen this post in the rom thread your trying to flash http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=23255456&postcount=389 try redownloading again

I did all that before... Im going to redownload, maybe its corrupted but I doubt it. Is it maybe because I have locked bootloader or something? Beacause I didnt use that long guide with "android SDK" in General, but some other very quick guide. Just plug USB, enable debugging and run some script and thats it.

do yourself a favor, do it the right way the first time and save yourself headaches in the future. its not hard. fastboot oem unlock(bootloader), flash a custom recovery, flash a custom rom(and gapps) via the recovery, then boot up. thats it.
If you are more of a visual type of guy I suggest going on YouTube and search "zedomax". He has some really simple videos on how to root your nexus s, he has a couple videos on how to root but make sure its for a GSM nexus.
Simms got all in a simply way.
Unlock boot loader
Install or flash cwm
install the new stuff from SD card
reboot
Can anyone tell me or please provide a link to what unlocking bootloader does please.
Best Regards
Excuse my ignorance, I'm pretty new to this and I might not be of any help at all... but is it even possible to flash a custom recovery without unlocking the bootloader on the Nexus S?
I followed the instructions found on the NexusShacks.com website (How to root Nexus S or Nexus S 4G on ICS or Gingerbread) without any issues at all (sorry, can't post links due to low postcount :/)
No problems for me, I had zero experience with this sort of stuff but I have flashed a new ROM a every few days now without any issues whatsoever.

[Q] Fresh ROM installation (cleanrom)

I searched quite a bit but was left unsatisfied with the answers provided.
1. How to fresh install roms (cleanrom in my case)? Just factory reset in recovery before flashing (TWRP 2.4)? Wipe Cache, dalvik before or after?
2. What's the proper order for wipe cache\dalvik\data? Is it before rom installation, after or both ?
Lets say im using stock rom and want to do a clean install. I just want what comes with clean rom. No leftovers from the old installation. What steps should i take?
Thanks guys

I consider what I want and what is suggested as the proper install for the particular rom (see the op as roms vary).
You don't want anything left so I'd do spring cleaning. In twrp ( update your twrp to 2.4.1.0 ) if I wanted clean as you say I'd wipe cache, dalvik, data, and system (no formatting just wipe). Before you do this make sure you have one known good backup on your internal sdcard and on your external sdcard. You should also have a flashable zip on each. Insure you can see these files on both cards (with twrp) before you wipe. If you practice this method you will always have an out if there is a problem. If you don't then with what has been wiped you are assured a brick at sometime in the future. I do this before to clear my unit; when you are told to do some wipes afterwards this is to clear something in the rom you are flashing.
Sorry but I was required to say that as you never know who might see this in the future and not know to protect themselves.
Make sure you are unlocked. Install TWRP 2.4.1.0 over fast boot from a PC or too manager if you are already rooted.
You can install CROMI straight over stock with a dalvik cache and cache wipe but if you want a clean system just wipe data via the factory reset option inside TWRP (not the boot loader) and then flash the CROMI file. Recommend odex if you are just starting out.

thanks. thats pretty much what i did the second time. after failing to do a clean install i went back and almost used format which i guess is bad for those who dont know what the hell it does.. but the red letters in twrp swayed me away from that option

That sucks. There's software out there that can probably help you recover what was on your card.
As for a clean install, you'll probably want to throw a ROM image/zip onto another SD (if you plan on recovering from your current one) and then get into recovery to flash it.
It's a pretty general set of instructions, but as sbdags said though, you may find better advice in the right forum.

[Q] How to do a COMPLETELY factory reset?

Xperia P lt22i

Locked bootloader
I'm a noob and yes, I am retarded (You'll know why).
So, I've changed some stuff in my phone:
Status bar, boot and shutdown animation, themes, CWM recovery, xperia Z lockscreen, a custom feature for the camera, and so on.
I didn't do a backup for all those things (I didn't know how, and I still don't), I tought I could wipe data or factory reset my phone and all these thing would be gone and my phone would be totally "factory reseted".
The question is simple, how can I reset COMPLETELY my phone? Is there any method to do it?
(sorry for my english)

it might me a hassle to find your stock rom, so i would reccommend installing a custom rom. There much better.
Check out your phones dev forum here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1729
Download a rom that you like (read some comments and see if its good), and place it on your sd card
To install a rom you must do a full wipe. To do this boot into recovery and choose: wipe data/factory reset , wipe cache partition, then go to advanced and wipe dalvik cache.
Then choose install zip from sd card, and find the rom you downloaded and install it.

"By golly that worked! It booted up fast as well. It must lie with the formatting your internal storage before flashing the 4.3 rom. I tried something similiar to this but I was already on a 4.3 rom that wouldn't boot and I formatted the sd card then tried flashing it again and it booted again for the first time but wouldn't the second. So if your having trouble do this:
Restored stock 4.1.2 using Matt's utility
Rooted with Matt's utility
Put 4.3 rom and GAPPS on external SD
Fastboot flash CWM 6.0.3.5 (or install via Matt's utility if you like)
Wipe data/factory reset
Wipe Cache/Dalvik
Go to mounts/storage and format /data and /data/media (/sdcard) **Back up anything in your internal SD you want to keep before doing this!**
Flash 4.3 rom
Wipe Cache/dalvik
Flash GAPPS
Wipe Cache/dalvik
Boot up and setup rom
Reboot"

Reboot"

Please explain this further to me. My problem is with 4.2.2 ROMS. The fix above is for folks having issues with 4.3 ROMS. Are you suggesting that doing this will also fix my 4.2.2 problems? This is also CWM while i run TWRP. I did a quick look and the two are setup a little difference. I played around with those highlighted instructions and almost accidentally wiped my only backup of my previous state. I actually thought i was toast but somehow i reloaded and went back to my old backup state.

i could be wrong, but in my opinion having the exact same issue even though its a different version, one of the 2 fixes in that thread should work.
the first fix likely doesn't directly apply although i suggest you ensure you have the latest version of your recovery of choice found here http://www.mediafire.com/download/tt7cwwua49n24uv/Razr_HD_Recovery_Flasher_V7.rar
second fix (backup ALL data you don't want to loose first as noted above), then do a full wipe as listed above, not just a fdr that doesn't wipe everything on the internal card.
the problem at this point is, you are assuming it wont work because of version differences, i am assuming it will. until you try it, i don't see any point in exploring other options, if there are any.
Dirty flashing when you go to different ROMs is generally not a good idea. Even on 4.2.2, it leaves residual data behind. There's a reason that the devs talk about doing complete wipes in their ROM threads, and there's a reason that they tell you not to talk about bugs unless you use their install directions.
