hello.
haven't been on this site for quite some time, but i am familiar with using custom roms.
i'm using an htc desire s with android 4.0.4, stock rom from htc site.
there are certain things i like about ICS, and other things that simply boggle me.
i've been considering using a custom rom again, but i was hoping someone could shed some light on specific features/functions.
in other words, i would be changing to a custom rom if one is available that has these features, otherwise i'll just leave it alone.
firstly: the camera.
when trying to take up-close photos (macro), the camera will attempt to focus, will succeed, then quickly snap back to being blurry. this happens less with "auto focus" turned off, but it's still frustrating (i can see the hardware moving the camera focus to where i want it, but i can't keep it there). turning on the Scene called "close up" will allow the hardware to stay in the focused range, where i want it, but it overrides the white balance, such that i can't adjust the white balance any more, and the colour is always -always- different from the colour settings in the "auto" Scene setting. very frustrating indeed.
that's problem one.
but the bigger problem (with the camera) is:
when taking a photo where a flash is required/desired (in low lighting), i have to take many -many- photos before i happen to roll the dice and get one in focus. basically, holding up the camera to the darkened scene, the screen is mostly dark. i can take a photo with the flash, but the camera uses the same moment of flash to implement the focus, which is essentially entirely useless. in other words: dark scene, dark screen, flash ready, click to take a photo, flashtrytofocustakepicture = blurry picture. the picture only turns out well if the focus happens to catch in just the right way at the right time.
in contrast, while the stock camera app behaves this way, when i use google goggles, the camera behaves differently. there is a simple button which turns the led light on and off BEFORE taking a picture, which means the focus can function normally on a fully lit scene and then a picture can be taken, in focus. funny thing about that: the photo result that shows as a preview (immediately after snapping a photo in google goggles) is the desired photo, however it is not the photo that the app recognises nor which is saved on the sd card. anyhow, that's a different issue.
the point is: it seems clear to me that the hardware is capable, and the software is capable, but they have not been married correctly in 4.0.4.
would anyone be able to confirm whether another rom or camera app has the macro and light-before-focus capabilities described above?
i have some other questions about the way text copy and paste is implimented, but i'll just stick with the camera question for now.

I did several searches and have become numbed at the prospect of finding my actual problem here (though I cannot imagine I am the only one). Basically it is the camera, it is...sluggish, what I mean is it refreshes very poorly, and I cannot figure out how to set it to flash, ccording to the link below it has this ability. Anyhow, when I take pictures if the item/person do not stay absolutely still all I get is blur, and even if they do stay still if I breath I get the same results, anyone know how I can fix this?

Unfortunately, the camera in the Touch Pro is not very sensitive to light, so in low-light situations the exposure will be long, leading to blurry photos. The flash isn't very bright, so it doesn't help much except at pretty close range, but I can tell you how to turn it on.
When you are in the camera application, touch the screen and you will see a "gear" icon at the lower right of the screen. Touch it and the menu opens. The icon in the upper left of the menu that looks like a lightning bolt turns on and off the flash.
I'm using the camera and I'm noticing one thing. On any other device I've used, you can touch on a dark or light area of the screen and the camera will focus accordingly. Either brightening or darkening. Any ideas why that doesn't work on the GS3?
It's harder to describe than I thought. Let me know if that doesn't make sense.
It works on CM10, I thought it was the same on TW too... been a while since I've been on TW.
I've never seen that on either our Incredible, Incredible 2 or Galaxy S III phones - touching on the active camera screen sets focus to where you pointed.

he's talking about tap to focus and exposure.. and yes that was indeed a feature on the Incredible camera. say that you are taking a photo of a cloudy sky.. tap on the darker area and the camera would adjust the exposure on that spot to lighten it up a bit
i thought it did work on the S3 camera.. but now you mention it...
i'll try to take some photos at the Yankees/Red Sox game tomorrow night.. should be a cloudy day and a good time to test.
EDIT: i've turned on 'Auto contrast' under setting, and it did a similar effect.. now when you pan your camera to a darker area.. it should adjust itself (no need to tap!) :highfive:. you'll also notice that your 'Exposure value' setting has been greyed out, since it's adjusting it for you automatically now.

I've never heard of this, admittedly - even the manual only states that tapping the camera display will focus on that spot. Holding it down takes a picture with that spot as the point to concentrate focus, exposure, etc.
Took out my Incredible and tried different metering modes, but tapping only changed focus. Are you talking about holding a finger down to take the picture, as I described above? This might be semantics, then.

radiohead's got it right. ooofest, I can take a video of my Incredible doing it if you like. I tried the Auto Contrast feature but it's not having the same effect. Thanks for all the responses.

hmm.. i did have default settings before turning "Auto contrast" on. maybe there's something you had changed that's preventing it? i know how when you turn on "Anti-shake", it prevents being able to take a photo while in video mode.. maybe something like that is happening.

I've tried it with anti-shake on and off, I tried it while adjusting the exposure, tried with auto-contrast on, I tried it with all different kind of scene selections. It does work well just by tilting the camera towards the darker or lighter area but then it's cutting some of what I wanted to take a picture of. I did try my friends original Galaxy from 2 years ago and it works like a charm. Not sure what's wrong. I'm making a bigger deal of it than I should but when it's a feature I've used so regularly for so long, it's hard to let go. I appreciate your responses.

Oh, this was my poor perception in this conversation, then.
To me, that Incredible's tap response was part of the refocusing feature when tapping our camera display: it setup to take a new picture at that spot, with all that entailed, though I admittedly cared most about it weighting focus . . . and then all aspects of the picture to that area of concentration (especially if I had metering mode set to Spot), regardless of whether I held my finger down on that spot to take the picture or tapped and then clicked the optical button. In either case, the Incredible adjusts the picture and not just the focus, yes.
The Galaxy S III TouchWiz camera is often more quick to take a picture, so I've tried different contrast and other modes to hope it will expose the shot well enough. Usually that's the case, but sometimes I need to readjust between Auto-focus mode, White Balance, Metering mode, etc. - I don't touch the display to take the picture these days, because it's usually close enough for my needs. But, I can see what you are missing.

Hey everyone,
Just recently, I've been having a problem with blurry pictures because the photo taker assumes that the photo is taken and saved before it is taken.
Previously on roms, once you press the blue button on the camera app, you see the autofocus do its work, and then it stops (which means the photo has been taken).
However, on the ROM I am currently on, it does the autofocus and the still, but takes like 3 seconds after that before the photo is actually taken O.O I'm not sure why, but this is causing a lot of blurry pictures because autofocus doesnt account for the 3 seconds between the focus and the actually photo taken.
Any ideas?
I do not have your phone/brand/rom so I have no experience in your device whatsoever.
However, I think that you are spot on about the autofocus potentially being a cause.
Are you able to disable it or use another camera application that has tap to focus or similar?

Using another camera app causes some glitches (parts of the picture cuts off, streaks of white on the sides, etc.). Tap to focus will not help the problem because there is still a gap between when the pic is taken and when it is focused.

The photon's camera is killing me. I can't take macro pictures in shady conditions. This is what happens when I'm trying to take that picture.
-I'm aiming on some surface/object (shady and close).
-Camera sets exposure to brighten the picture.
-I'm tapping the area to focus.
-Flash turns on.
-In split second camera is blinded by flash and aborts focus.
Please someone tell me there is some tweak to make camera wait with flash. I tried many camera apps but only solution I found was constant flash in e.g Camera FV-5. But i'm not satisfied with that.
For example my Samsung Xcover 2 is turning flash on, changes the exposure to not be blinded and focus like a charm.
That is why I use "Focal" as my camera app.
You can turn on the "flashlight" and then focus.
I have never found a similiar good app (focal is not perfect but it is ok) with that "feature".

There is e.g. "Camera FV-5", "lgCamera" and "A Better Camera" with this feature. You can try them and compare with Focal. But me, as I said, I'm not satisfied with that

It may be possible to add the same procedure like in the Samsung Xcover 5.

Only to me, even with master AI off, the camera changes mode by itself (without announce it)?
When I try to focus an object too much close, i see that objective changes... I'm almost sure that use "super macro" mode without showing the pop up.
Someone else is facing this issue??

It's not an issue, that's the expected behavior, when taking pictures the phone AI recognizes some scenes and adjust camera parameters to some presets, for example, focus on the sky and a preset "Blue Sky" will be enabled, focus a small river or running water and you will get "Silky water" mode.

Seems that certain things like Super-Macro are still automatic with or without AI enabled, but it will not change image settings or detect scenes without AI, so for example of the blue sky, it will not say that without AI, or if you take a photo of a dog it will not know it is a dog
But if you go too close to an object for normal lens to focus on, it will switch to Macro lens

I have to agree with you, this phone is complete garbage, I have the same issue, I turn off master AI and it's still switching to super macro just without showing the pop up, and no my picture is an up close shot but still within the main sensors focus range and it still switching to the crappy detailed cropped wide angle lens, it's so bad using this phone the experience has been terrible, was my first Huawei phone and I will never get another one again... I can't even take a simple photo, only method that works is trying to click your shot before it switches lens
See below example at the same distance from subject in low light, the image I want to be able to capture all the time is the bright normal one (just about managed to snap before it switches me, which isn't always easily possible), the one it's trying to force me into shooting is that dark garbage, that's how stupid this phone is that it tries to force me to take that instead of the other, it's been this way since I've had this phone, it's just plain and simply bad...
I know this is an old post, but nowhere else ever talked about it, so I think poster here is completely right, it does this in daylight also obviously, which makes it harder to notice, but will cause the photo to have worse background separation and a lot worse detail

Just what I was looking for. I have the Huawei P30, and I really like to take photos of my self-made food. What I have noticed is that even when I turn off the Master AI, the camera STILL automatically enhances the color vibrance of the images. This also happens when I take photos outdoor, especially the sky and trees.
I really hate it because it looks fake! Girls may want their picture to be vibrant and all, but I am more of a realistic kind of guy. I realize that shots from iPhone are much much better. Even though they seem kinda dull compared to the same images taken from the Huawei P30 (or any other Android), pictures from iPhone are the closest things to what you see in real life.
It's pretty annoying that the Huawei P30 is the first phone I bought for myself, by my own money. Maybe the next time I need a phone, I will switch to Apple for better/realistic photography.
But then again, iOS is boring and suffocating AF.
Argg... choosing the right smartphone is tough AH.
