I have tried to root my infuse several times now. The forums here were a help but I'm at a dead end. Is there a way to download the windows drivers and install them 'by hand' rather than go through Kies? I have tried that multiple times on 2 different computers and I have had no luck getting my phone recognized. (At this point I would be insanely happy if I could just get files to my phone via USB).
I feel like I have tried everything that has been posted about troubleshooting and rooting to no avail... is there any more? A different tack I could take?
Thanks
Samsung Infuse Stock 2.2.1
Tried SuperOneclick - hangs
ADB - hangs
Windows - doesn't recognize
Kies - phone not supported
Mini Kies - installs drivers but windows still craps out
Tried every USB port on 2 computers
Tried Odin - The very first time I used it Odin saw my phone and every time after that I get nothing.
I found a different USB cable and tried it and it worked! This is amazing. Thanks guys!!!
Have you tried a different USB cable?

If a different USB cable doesn't work, you can try Heimdall. I think it comes with drivers. Or you can download the drivers from Samung.
If the USB cable thing doesn't work you could always install Linux ( I recommend Ubuntu if you've never used Linux before) on a small partition, then the drivers would not be necessary. Install JRE and flash one of the rooted, custom kernel, rom packages via heimdall.

Ok total noob, but heres where im stuck. Ive somehow managed to screw up the system partition. when i reboot it says its unavailable, I'm able to get into red CWM. but my issue is also that I Cannot get the drivers to install on my pc (win7 64bit) i've tried both regular kies and mini kies and pc studio as well as the att usb modem drivers.
I've tried Odin but the phone wont stay visible long enough to allow it to flash, it will start but then the phone will disconnect and format will fail.
Any ideas fellas?
(update) drivers installed as Samsung USB composite device & Samsung Mobile modem, but I'm now stuck at the screen with a phone and a dotted line with an exclamation point in a yellow triangle that connects to a pc.
am currently downloading ult. unbrick and return to stock..and crossing all my finger and toes
FIXED!!!
switched to eSata port, which didnt recognize phone before. IT did this time, ran Ult Un. Brick and wala!! all better!!! Now back to see what I can do to this thingy! (btw Gtg465x there's a donation headed your way)

I have always had good luck with Odin 1.8 when it came to the Phone - to - Pc error. For some awesome reason, it will view it as download mode. But also try another USB port, new drivers or even heimdall. I personally don't use windows unless its in a VirtualBox, I have 99.4% success rate with heimdal. Give it a try.
My phone would not stay connected for more than a minute. I use a particular USB port and I use a different cable.

I was trying to install Cyanogen 7 and my first step was a one-click return to stock that seemed to complete fine.
When I rebooted I go into Android 3e recovery. Each time I boot the recovery message says:
Update media. please wait
update media. finished
#manual mode#
--Applying Multi-CSC...
Installing Multi-CSC
Install default apk-files. please wait
Install default apk-files. finished
The phone is no longer recognized by windows even though I've tried several different versions of the Samsung drivers. (also tried different USB ports, different cables and different computers per my search results in here)
I can get into Download mode but the device is not recognized so its not recognized by any of the ODIN utilities to repair or restore...
Any idea what is going on - or more importantly what can I do to recover this thing?
Help?
Thanks!
First of all, I would try Heimdall One-Click instead of Odin. It's more reliable, and uses better drivers. Will it not reboot into Froyo? And which one-click package did you use?
I used the Heimdall One-Click and it seemed to complete okay. Trouble started when I rebooted. I can't seem to redo it because the the One click utilities don't recognize the phone as connected.
I always get the Windows message "USB Device is not recognized" and when I go into my Device Manager the phone is listed as an "Unknown Device"
I would strongly advise against flashing back to froyo or eclair as the bootloaders are out dated.. As.for.your phone not being recognized it could be a number of issues from anywhere to ypur pc.needs a reboot to your usb cable is bad. I once had the same issue and i reinstalled the samsung drivers a few times with no reults. Believe it or not what fixed my problem was a fresh install of kies (a program i never use)

Heimdall uses completely different drivers
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777
Yes it installed the heimdall drivers successfully when I tried to run the on-click. Then it timed out. I now appear to be back to an unrecognized device again. Installing Keis, Samnsung drivers etc trying to get it to recognize the phone again. It easily goes into download mode.
Anyone got any ideas how I can get this thing breathing again?
Try rebooting the computer. Use a USB port in the back of the computer. Try a different cable. Open Odin before connecting phone to computer.

Tried all of this - still no love. Every once in a while it will search and install Samsung drivers but then it disconnects almost instantly.
I also fumbled through getting a Ubuntu up to try it in Linux but the download mode isn't found in linux either.
Running out of options here. Wondering if I've pooched this phone.

Its not broken permanently, I promise.
Well slap my a$$ and call me Judy!
After 1 million attempts (cords, ports. pcs, windows, linux) I finally managed to get back into my phone. I literally must have had this phone in and out of download mode several hundred times in the last 24 hours. One of my attempts finally worked in Ubuntu! Not sure why really - but I am okay with that at this point.
Thanks for all you help!
Darren
<smack> good job Judy.
Hello all,
Firstly thank you for the great development and help the community is providing for GS4G. From the time I bought this phone (few weeks ago), I have been playing around with different ROMs. I try GB roms and ICS roms every now and then. Always go back to GB using 1 Click's.
Yesterday when I was going the 1-Click Heimdall, it failed in between with some error. After this, I am unable to boot into the OS or recovery or download mode. It comes to a screen which tells me that the firmware upgrade was interrupted and asks me to use recovery in Kies. I tried this, but Kies does not even recognize my phone anymore. Windows shows my phone as "unknown device". I tried uninstalling and re-installing Kies, but still no use. I hope there is some way to get my phone back.
I read somewhere about a USB Jig that could get you into download mode. I have ordered it from Amazon and it may take a couple of days. Meanwhile, if any of you can help, it would be great. Thanks!
youre soft bricked, this is fixable. The firmware upgrade interrupted screen is the same thing as download mode. try reinstalling the drivers which i think are found in the sgs4g BIBLE thread. after that, plug in your phone and make it go to the firmware upgrade interrupted screen and see if it installs the drivers. read lumin's guide. it explains everything step by step. im going to try to link it here soon.

Thanks. I had tried eollie's Heimdall Stock KJ6 + Root. But, I don't remember seeing the driver installation window show up. I tried reinstalling the drivers through Kies couple of times and re-booting. But, still didn't work. I will try what you suggested when I get home.
You should be able to fix it. Goodluck

When I connect my phone, Heimdall does nothing but says "disconnected". Windows shows that "a device has malfunctioned" and shows "unknown device connected".

Sounds like you need to run zadig.exe in the Drivers folder of the Windows distribution of Heimdall.
If that doesn't work, right-click on (My) Computer, select Manage, then select Device Manager. In the panel that opens, find your device, right-click on it and you can then look at its properties and potential change the driver there.
(Yes, this kind of shenanigans is another of the reasons I really dislike Windows)
Ok so what you should try is downloading the heimdall suite
https://github.com/Benjamin-Dobell/Heimdall/downloads
Extract and open the drivers folder and run zadig. Click devices/show all devices and if your phone is plugged in and in download mode it should see it. Install drivers and it should say drivers successfully installed. Then run your one-click jar file and it should work.

The downloads in this post will also get you where you wanna go

I tried all this. But, still Zadig shows my phone as "unknown device" and does not install drivers for it. Tried USBDview to remove any instance of Samsung & Android from the drivers. But, still does not recognize my device. Any other suggestions.
Try different USB ports on your computer.
Install Ubuntu (not totally kidding on that one, it will install side-by-side with Windows)
When is that jig getting there? One time I had a similar situation and I built myself a jig and it worked like a charm. Phone goes straight into download mode. I dunno if this will resolve your situation but I'm pretty sure this isn't the first time we've seen someone with this problem and then after trying several different computers and USB cables we usually say maybe your phone's USB Jack is messed up? And then the thread goes dead.

Have you uninstalled any drivers? Download and install the drivers from the bible thread if you haven't. Like suggested, try different USB ports and different USB cables. Sometimes it takes more than one try for some reason.

Have you rebooted your comp at all?? If no that might be the problem.
SUCCESS !!
Thanks a lot for all your suggestions.
Here is what worked:
- I opened device manager and uninstalled ALL USB devices (Yes ALL, not just Samsung, Android etc) and unfamiliar Storage devices.
- Then I rebooted once so that all other device drivers could be installed.
- Then I rebooted a second time and let it install any remaining drivers.
- Then I plugged in the phone and it installed the driver and now it started showing the correct device name
- Now, I ran the Heimdall 1-click and it opened offered to re-install drivers. I did this.
- After all this, I was able to get 1-Click GB rom installed and now back to VB.
(I think the key was "uninstall all USB devices" and "reboot TWICE")
glad you got it to work. ive had my share of soft bricks with this device and it always takes something different to get it to run right. im starting to think that my computer is alive because of this reason because it just doesnt like to play nice sometimes. LOL
I just got my infuse 4g with 2.3.6 today, and I've been trying all day to root it so that i cant put CWM on it to put cm10.1 on. But each and every method I've found to root it, does not work. I first installed the usb drivers straight from Samsungs website, I hooked the phone into my computer and turned USB Debugging on and ADB recognized it. First I tried super on click because it seemed the easiest, But each time i run it it will simply freeze up and the program will crash, I tried 3 different computers and every usb port, no luck. Next I tried odin, I put the phone into download mode, and hooked it up to the computer, but odin will not recognize it, i tried many other usb ports and 2 other computers, but none will work. Then I discoved that the device manager doesn't have the driver for the download mode of the phone, under Other Devices it shows as Gadget Serial, Where in the heck do I find this driver? Is there any other method of getting CM10.1 on here other then having to root this thing?

I already tried Odin, but my the program would not detect my phone. Which I discovered was because my phone was updated to the latest firmware which Odin does not support. The latest Heimdall One-click Back-To-Stock UCLB3 worked though.

Thanks, after about 2 more days of trying different options I finally found that Heimdall One-click Back-To-Stock UCLB3 worked for me.
AT&T Infuse 4g, problem is, my computer doesn't recognize the device, but only when it is in download mode. Kies works, with phone on, and will try to update it to GB, but when the phone reboots into download mode, unsupported usb device. I have tried to make this work on 3 computers, and with 3 different cables. I have tried Odin, Kies and Heimdall. I have tried Samsung drivers and Android SDK Google USB drivers. Does anyone have any other suggestions.
It seems I may be forever stuck on Froyo...:crying:
It is a driver problem, or the phone hardware is broken. Either way, the device is not recognized and no driver is installed. Quite a few views, and no suggestions. Ugh...
Anyone?
I can't say about Odin 'cause I haven't used it in a while.
With Heimdall, sometimes a pc will recognize it right away..others may require several tries, different USB port, or USB cable or several reboots of the PC and retries.
Night before last I took mine back to stock again. My one-clicks were not seeing my phone or offering drivers. I opened my Heimdall suite went to the driver folder ran Zandig to install drivers and all was good again. If you swap between Odin, Heimdall, and or Kies you will probably have to change the driver with every program change. They each use different driver in same location

exactly..and if you get heimdall to work..pay attention to what port it is on your pc and label that port..and don't install odin over it or you will fall back to the same problem of having to reinstall heimdall again.

Don't know why I never thought to use diferent port for each. Will save me a lot of time re-installing drivers
unfortunately, the problem has gotten worse. I have , quite possibly bricked my phone. (I thought it was "unbrickable"). I used another pc, started flashing with Odin, I thought it was working, but long story short, the phone got too hot, so I shut it all down. As of now, I am unable to get into download mode. I have tried all the known methods (to me), but every time I start the phone, I just get some randomly colored screen.
