I dropped my galaxy 3 into a bucket of water (literally!) two months ago.
Now the battery life is dead nil.The phone tells me it is fully charged in 5 min
and it drains in half an hour!
Is this a problem of faulty battery or a problem with the circuit board?
I think that it is battery problem because I had similar problems but without droping my phone into the water

I had the same charging / discharging times (without dropping my G3 into water, though - I think it was because of bad flashing). Fixed it by doing this. (I'd wipe the battery stats twice, once before the procedure, and once when instructed to do so.)

just had a thought, my g2x just started rebooting like crazy i.e it would get to the tmobile g2x android start up animation and after it finishes it would reboot. my battery was around 30%-35% at the time i was thinking maybe the battery cant maintain a decent voltage and it falls below the g2x voltage threshold while under load and boom instant reboot. this could also explain why some batteries heat up to hot as well, they dont have a high enough discharge rate to keep up with the demands of the phone.
this can be solved one of two ways get a larger capacity battery of the same discharge rate. or get a higher discharge rate battery of the same size. both of those will allow the phone to draw more power without overtaxing the battery and would keep the battery cooler as well.
I wouldn't be surprised if the battery drivers are the culprit for all our issues. The phone can't properly read the battery charge and so the battery overheats or the phone reboots itself in hopes of getting a better reading on the battery.
i noticed my phone starts to heat up when the battery level hits around 40%. i never really understood why.
Mine once rebooted when it was plugged in and 100% charged. I think when it's plugged in it draws power from charger not the battery. So your theory, if true, only explains some reboots, not all.

I may be mistaken, but if it was in fact 100% then it was probably drawing from the battery at that point. I believe that once they reach 100% they will cycle between battery usage and charging.
well i know from using lipo batterys in my r/c planes and cars that if you draw them below 3v it can damage the battey im not sure what Li-ion low voltage is but its near the same basicly once the battery hit around 3.6 volts at rest its empty and will not hold voltage at all.
and for the 100% full charge if the battery drivers is fubar it could be overcharging your battery and damaging it so it has less capacity so when it pulls a draw it cant keep up and reboots
I plug my phone in every day before going to bed, and unplug it in the morning. If G2x doesn't have overcharging protection my battery would have been damaged long ago.
Also, I used the phone several times when it was charged 100% and still plugged in, never saw battery percentage went to 99% then back to 100%. So I believe when 100% and plugged in, it won't cycle power source through battery and charger.

I will add a little information that may or may not have relevance. I have 4 batteries for my G2X (This is my solution to the short battery life). The LG battery, $25 AceSoft battery, and two $6 generic Chinese batteries. None of them including the dirt cheap ones cause my phone to reboot. Conclusions can be drawn from this information but I'm going to leave that up to someone else. If you want to test the battery hypothesis I suggest you buy some of those cheap batteries off of eBay and see if something changes. Would be a rather inexpensive experiment.
I agree, ever since I started using a 1900mah battery from ebay, the random reboots and freezing issues have disappeared completely, and I have been using the phone for almost a month now. Please try a different battery to get rid of random reboots and overheating issue. Hope it will help someone.

you know what, I bought 3 ebay batteries so I can swap them around if i don't have a charger. none of them did the black lock screen. weird.
I had random reboot issues using some of the custom roms + original battery.
Then I bought a charger + batteries off ebay, and reset to original rom, and havn't had a single reboot/freeze since.
i just had my second reboot in cyanogen with my battery at 32% after if rebooted it went back up to 45%. i was playing galaxy on fire 2 when it rebooted. and according to battery monitor it was pulling 931mA when it rebooted.
i think the battery discharge rate is substandard for this phone this is a high performance phone and you cant just stick a normal cell phone battery in and expect it to work. this is in part why some of the reboots are happening and why when people got new battery they problem went away for them.
You might be on to something. Everytime my phone restarts it is because it is overheating.

i wish we had more info on the batterys lg used like the discharge rate and everything. i bet they are .5c or 1c discharge that would be why they overcheat when under heavy use or charging
I got a replacement battery from T-Mobile this past Tuesday, and had two random reboots within an hour. However, since then, I haven't had one issue. 4 days and counting going strong... Knocking on wood. Phone is stock and rooted.
well i know cm fixed the battery should be in his next build also data speeds with gingerbread, should be build 54 not 53, something is wrong with 53 and root access so they are going to have it fixed im pretty sure in 54, here peep this via twitter.........
@CM_arcee RC
My dark magical powers have beaten the G2x's radio into submission. Starting tonight, p999 gets a battery meter and twice the data speed
3 hours ago via web
while that is awsome news i dont think the battery meter for the phone is really the problem it happens when the draw on the battery pulls it below 3v under load the batterys low voltage cutoff kicks in and shuts the phone off and then the spings back up and the phone restarts
I think it could be the chargers causing issues. My gf pulled my g2x charger out of the box and said it made her phone whacky and died after a few hours.
Her comment made me think about it.
I never had battery issues but I use my old nexus one and zune charger.
Food for thought

My wall charger is bad, out bricks the phone every time I use it. Have to charge via USB.

My SGH-S730m (no device forum for this phone yet) battery percentage was at around 80% when I turned it off. It was placed in a pocket with another device. I can 100% confirm it was off for a complete 4 hours.
When I turned it on, the battery level was at 5%.
The battery still charges, the phone still works. The battery has not exploded yet, and is currently at 45% charge. I am using samsungs OEM battery (it came in the box with the phone). I have had this phone for just more than 2 months now.
What the heck happened? Is my fuel guage messed up?
Have you ever tried battery calibration?
1. Charge phone to 100%
2. Discharge to 0%
3. Let phone sit for 5 minutes
4. Plug it in without turning the phone on
5. Charge without break to 100%
6. Repeat 2-3 times
I also is same...

That might be a fix, but im looking for the reason behind this problem.
Does anybody know what went wrong? My phone still works (if that even means anything).
Sometimes it happens that the chip goes mad. It happens with every android phone. You're lucky that you have removal battery. Some devices is difficult to do the above trick. I think when you do a full charge and disconnect the battery from the phone for 5 minutes it will be good again. I'm not kind of advice let battery go to 0 because you can ruin li ion battery with a full discharge.

How long did you have this phone?
Can't you get it exchange for a new one in case the phone has a problem?
I don't know where you from but in Europe you have 6 months for battery and 2 years for phone.

What I meant was, if it's still within it's warranty period you should get it exchanged.
If not, swap your battery with someone and see if it's your phone or the battery.
Indeed.

I won this phone for $7 at a stack-em machine. I doubt it has warrenty.
Sorry pal I can not answer that. But try the exchange battery suggestion from the other user. And try mine for calibration.

Is this a one time only issue or did you get that a lot?
One time only can be from a stuck process in your phone
If you get that a lot => try the warranty

One time issue. I noticed that the phone was getting really hot (even though it was off).

Nope, you can't. It reads 0% while actually it's voltage is way above 0mV (actually somewhere above 3V) and that's a preventive so that you can never discharge it even close to full discharge because going over 0.5V below the nominal voltage would ruin most Li-Ion batteries so it simply doesn't even allow you to do that. And besides, from where do you think it draws the juice to blink the LED when you try to turn the phone on after a "full discharge"?

You should buy a replacement battery then ASAP, they're pretty cheap these days. You don't want Li-Ion packs overheating and the liquid inside them catching on fire.
Li-ion battery are intended to work between 40 and 100 working below that is in most cases the ruin of a battery. And experts say even 98 % slhould be optimal full charge not evem full.

Can you please quote some sources and prove that this is not just a speculation by yourself? I understand the physics of electricity and the foundations of marketing and economy well enough to say that what you wrote is utter nonsense.
Just read the thread from gokhanmoral from here. On galaxy s3 original development thread.

I already know what the problem is. What I want to know is "what" happened to the battery.
Why, would the battery die so quickly when the phone was off? Why, was my li-ion battery discarging the energy as heat? (which would expain the heat while it was off). Why, does my phone still work?
Years ago, I fried a pocket pc by using a 10A charger instead of the usb 0.5A standard (is it 0.5mA? - I cant remember anymore). The battery didnt actually explode, but it got HOT! Really hot. I came back 10 minutes later to discover that my battery was discharging while plugged in..
I fried my fuel guage hardware. Tried to save it, but there was no way. Even after unplugging the 1 pound beast from the charger, the phone was discharging around %4 every 30 seconds. I learned my lesson from that horrific event (I loved that phone so much).
Now, who "actually" knows what happened to my battery? Anyone? I dont need a fix - so dont bother posting if your going to tell me to buy, sell, or repair, and not tell me why.
Hello.
I have Samsung Galaxy Note I GT-N7000 I have problem... serious. I was watching Netflix and recharging my phone. Then i got warning of low battery and it turned off after 5 minutes and it was "charging" Well then i leaved and next day, i but it to charge. Battery image appeared to screen and was there about 10 seconds. After 2 hours of waiting i tried to start the phone but it didn't. Now i tested the voltage of the battery and how ever (-0.00 V) No life in whole battery Then my dad told me to take out the battery from phone and leave it to table for an hour and check does it work.
Does anyone else have/had problem where Battery has died?
Can it be fix'd?
I tried cleaning Micro-USB port!
Thanks.

How long have you had the battery? They don't have a very long lifespan and die quite dramatically. If you put it on a flat surface can you see its bloated and spins easily? If so it's definitely gone and needs replacing.

Hey guys,
You can see the problem in the Screenshot. At one point the phone stops charging fast and goes on charging very slow. It looks like the phone thinks the battery is full and minimizes the charging power. It is a 1500mah battery, bought a few days ago. I also calibrated the battery at 100% in the 4ext recovery. CM 10.2 from 08.08.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Provably not a problem at all. My guess would be that the battery or charging circuits were getting too hot so it dropped the charging current - fairly normal behavior.
The phone is staying completely cool. I think the calibration is wrong. It is supposed to charge slower at 90% Not something like 50
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
I suspect a cheap battery... What brand is it?
Its a german brand MTec, oder via ebay.
I've noticed my battery does the exact same thing. Charges quickly to around 50% and then very slow for the remaining 50%. I'm using the original HTC battery that came with my Desire S so I just presumed that it was either the due to the battery aging or perhaps due to the CM 10.1 I'm running. Can't say I noticed this charging behaviour before I used CM 10.1 but I didn't immediately notice it after flashing either.
My phone takes around 8 hours to do a full charge. I've noticed that I can get it to charge to 100% more quickly if I let it charge to near 50%, unplug it and leave it for 5/10 mins, then plug it in again. It's starts off with a fast charge again. It slows after a while but overall it's a quicker way to get to 100%. It's probably not the best thing for your battery to do that regularly so I don't do it unless I need it to charge quickly.
I have found in the last couple days my nexus 5's battery % to go UP when idling off the charger. I have no idea why this happens, anyone else seeing this? Look at the last part of my battery graph and note that it was not charging at any point. It's only 1-2% usually, but it always catches me off guard
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Yes it happens to everyone, at least it happens in every N5 battery screen I've seen. It seems it's recalibrated by the graphic, most probably just a software problem and not a hardware one.
My GS3 and GS4 were the same.
