Plasti Dipped Battery Cover - Galaxy S 4 General

For those of you who don't like how your phone feels, but do not want a cover, here is a wonderful solution. I bought a can of "plastic dip" online and sprayed my cover. It feels wonderful. Mine looks a bit inconsistent, but if you apply the right amount of coats yours could look better. It is also very thin and removable. All you have to loose is he cost of the rattle can.

Many people have tried it, but in the end, it will start peeling off within a day or two, especially since the phone is often take in and out of pockets, where the corners of the cover is stressed, the rubber will come off. And that was after 4-5 coats.
It does feel amazing though, I just wish it lasted longer than a couple of days.

Best off would be buying a cheap but non-glossy back cover, maybe one that imitates the S4's brushed aluminum style side.

I'm very interested in this. If anyone finds a non glossy battery cover, please let me know!!!

There are plenty of those here in Hong Kong, unfortunately, those are also super slippery, and sometimes they don't even fit all that well. I wish they should just make a rubberized backing with the same grippy materials they make cases with... or I just wish plastidip would last longer...

Just get a full body skin from xtremeguard. I had one on my Note 2 and it eliminated the slippery issues.

If you're interested in those metal covers, do take note that wireless charging does not work through those... in case you plan to install a wireless-charging coil behind it in future.

When I first read your reply I thought, "no way, it is on there like it was meant to be." Then I pulled my phone out of my pocket and a corner of the coating picked up.
Oh well. My Spoogin... Spengin... Spfjdksal;jfd,(however it is spelled) hybrid case will be here tomorrow anyway.

Plasti-Dip'd my battery cover.

For those of you that aren't familiar with Plasti-dip, it's basically rubber in an aerosol can. It dries matte black in color and it's rubber, so of course, it's nice and grippy . It doesn't hurt that it looks good either. And if you decide you don't want it anymore, it peels off like a piece of tape. It really is amazing stuff.

In the top pic, you can vaguely make out the verizon logo, but it's nothing a second coat can't fix.
I'm going to walk around with like I normally would and check out the wear to decide if additional coats are necessary.
I never thot about that haha I stay plastic dipping my maros hood but never thought about phone haha

Interesting. I just picked up the S3 and I feel like I have to hold it with two hands at all times so I don't drop it. I'll be interesting to hear how your fix stands up to day to day use.
Looks good.. i'm really considering doing this to mine now
Looks...interesting. Would a phone skin would stick to it? I am tired of my pebble blue battery cover and blue themes. Black looks great with everything.
how does it affect reception, if at all?
Looks pretty cool. What is the cost of plastidip compared to a stock back panel?

Nice work.
No drips and it looks very smooth with slight texturing.
Even though the S3 is smooth it's still has a little grip to it.
I liked the S2 textured back cover, as well as the grippy Evo 4G, but you seem to have found a nice diy fix

I would say that rubber, silicone, etc. wouldn't affect reception at all.
Metal, aluminum, etc. would though.
Or metallic substances embedded in a substance which otherwise wouldn't affect reception.

You can find a can at Home Depot or Lowes for like 8 bux. Comes in black, white and yellow.
The one coat job didn't hold long. It started to pull up along the edge. So i'm thinking a quick spray around the edge up into the underside should secure it a bit better (might also fix that creak noise near the volume rocker ). The thinner the better so as to not obstruct the snaps. Will update when completed
Just got a can of black for 5.95 at home depot.

did you spray just the outside of the back cover? i'm just a little worried of my battery getting a little hot and having the plasti-dip melt into the back of the phone... no issues so far? it is a great diy idea, and i'm gonna try it on my extended battery cover. i can't find a decent case at a reasonable price and the 6$ for a can of plast-dip is perfect.
BTW, being a NYer, i blow thru the soles of my sneakers. Plasti-dip +shoe goo= almost brand new soles...
You all should just use Rhinoliner like for a truck bed.. Haha.. Plenty of grip then and no peal

Metal Hybrid case with NO signal loss, I have pics & proof!

Found this case on Aliexpress.com that promises no signal loss because slots are cut out where each antennae strips are on the phone. Looks amazing. Also says it has a liner on the inside to cushion the phone if dropped.

I am ordering one but does anyone ordered have any reviews of this case?
Unfortunately that isn't how it works. Those plastic slots aren't really there for the antenna to radiate through. Either they are merely aesthetic, or they are there to break up the metal sides so that they are the right length to actually be part of the antenna themselves. So this case really is going to do nothing to stop any signal degradation.
Oh No, it's our friend Lucky Garden again pushing more China junk.
I do plan to order something like this one, as I was searching for it yesterday. Please give us review, when you get it.
Aww crap, I was hoping it would be a great case. Well I bought one but the good thing is it was only $2.99. When it gets here I will let you know what I think.
It came!!
So the case came today, took about 2 weeks to get it. Not bad I guess with the free shipping.
Things I like about it:
Fits snug, no movement or jiggling in the case
No signal loss, no wifi interference at all
Looks pretty slick, doesn't add bulk, can see the phones beauty
Buttons are very responsive and clicky. Metal buttons, not plastic.
Most cut outs are cut perfectly.
Things I don't like about it:
Minimal lay on the table protection on the front
Back of case presses against glass of phone creating an oil slick effect as seen in my pic below (nothing a matte screen protector can't fix)
Makes phone kind of slippery, feels almost like there isn't a case on the phone.
Headphone jack cutout it very narrow so anything other than original earphones probably won't fit.
All in all I like the case and will use it for work, not bad for a $3.00 case! I am really glad it isn't causing any problems with cell signal or wifi signal. I will probably order other colors in a few days!

I ordered one I think a day or two after you did. So it should be here soon. what about the GPS? Is the signal on that affected much?
---------- Post added at 11:56 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:53 PM ----------
Oh, and as far as the slipperiness goes. I did this with my clear case and it worked pretty well. Most of the time that slipperiness is a combination of the slick plastic and the release agent they used. I started with 2000 grit sandpaper. Then I wet sanded it with 2000 grit. Then I 5000 grits sanded it. Then I used mothers plastic polish. Same thing you use on headlights. And it's much more comfortable to hold without getting that greasy slippery feeling and remaining crystal clear
Nice, I'll do that to help with the feel. My GPS seems to be unaffected as well. Seems like a win on this one to me.
One thing I will say is that the back cover is a pain to get off, doesn't slide off as easy as it goes on. Not a deal breaker but if you like to change your cases often this might be a problem for you.

If you want me to guineepig I will lol. I have no experience with this website is it better/more reliaable than ebay?
That's cool, yeah I don't want to put out $20 to find out it doesn't work as well as planned. I have purchased 5 cases over the past 6 years and have never had a problem. The money goes in escrow until you confirm you got your order in satisfactory condition and time. If not the money goes back to you. I pay with my credit card but others use Paypal. I hate Paypal so I don't use them. I thinks it's safe and will continue to order from Aliexpress. Others on this forum have also ordered, they may have some reviews on their experiences.
Ill buy it tonight. I am debating on black on black or back and silver
I just installed a after s reel protector on he back of my phone and the removal of the back of the case is super easy to remove now. I guess that moisture between the glass and the plastic was creating a suction keeping the back of the case stuck to the phone. Not a problem now though.
Really liking how this case feels and looks, most people don't even notice that a case is in my phone which is the whole point of me buying it.
I got this case via eBay and I am very pleased with it. Just what I wanted. I'll make a thread and take pictures later.

I'm amazed at the lack of official accessories for the launch.
Then again, look what happened to best buy/target.
I guess we will just have to wait...
I received mine. Haven't installed it yet. But it's in my grubby little hands. Mobilefun VERY early order.
Ok, installed.
Fits better than many of the aftermarket ones based on what I've seen for reviews. Sides are curved already, little cutouts at the corners so they don't pull up.
After several hours of bubblepushing, I've got it almost perfect. I also think letting it get nice and heated up on the wireless charger helped, tho one of the sides still has some bubbles and the curved screen makes it really tough to push them out. They get shoved around. I suspect all would have similar issues.
it feels less rubbery than say a Zagg, not as smooth as glass. The curves do NOT make it easier to install but if you take your time, and have plenty of patience, it should go fine.
Inside the box, you get 2 screen protectors, a 2 inch square microfiber cloth and some dust removal stickers. No cleaner, no instructions but the case had nice foam padding.... It does not state wet or dry install. I went with dry.
I scrapped the stickers and mf cloth and used real cleaner and a much bigger microfiber cloth. Also got my bathroom all steamy to clear dust particles because there's nothing more OCD than a big piece of lint under your screen.
Now, you're going to want to know if it'll work with cases. Here's the rub. I only have the official S-VIEW case and it seemed to be fine there, didn't push up the sides "YET".
I've had it out of the case for HOURS after the install and just put it in 10 minutes ago.
Samsung got the fit nearly perfect, not unexpected. It is their device.
It's NOT the cheapest one out there and it seems rather hard to find for now, but so far, I'm "ok" with it. Time will tell.
I'll post at a later date/time if the sides start pushing up or the remaining bubbles don't get worked out. I cannot test it with any other case as I almost always use the s-view one.

I think you can get them for CA from the same website, from what I gather everything is shipped from the UK anyway.

Is there an orange-peel effect on this original Samsung screen protector? Since it's a bit rubbery like Zagg.
No orange peel effect, it's not like the original Zagg, more like the HD one. Feels like hard plastic and not glass tho.
followup notes.
Still attached to the sides fine. Have taken the phone in and out of the sview case several times now to put in the Gear VR. Not once has it pushed up the sides.
The remaining bubbles have worked their way out now. I switched tips on my spen as suggested and it feels fine.
I think it's a keeper. Plus they give you 2 so I have a spare for when/if I tear this one up.
What tip you did you switch too? I got my screen protector on the way.

The white one felt the best. YMMV.
Hmmm, I dunnooo.......
I have serious doubts about this being actual OEM. But if it works, HEY, why not (key takeaway)....been trying to get this since before release. If China can make Burberry bags that are identical to their "genuine" counterparts well then........
Anyway, if the ones from "Mobile Fun" really are OEM, I am curious to know how they got them, seeing as though Samsung themselves haven't started selling this item yet.
I think the design is ingenious, with the corner niches to allow for adherence to the beveled corners and curved sides.

I should add that I'm using an IQ Shield. First one was total garbage, they sent a replacement, just applied the replacement they sent me (looks like it might be a winner, though it's curing now so will update with results.
Requires extreme patience, minimal spray and a hairdryer but it IS possible. Sorry to take off track.
Waiting for OEM SP's to be made available in the States.

UPDATE* Second IQ Shield is better, and let me tell you, I followed the instruction video, and card perfectly, BUT, the edges are starting to lift again.
Ordered the (as advertised) OEM Screen Protector from MobileFun.com ... So this will have to do for now, until the Samsung one comes in.
And lastly, I see everyone blaming the manufacturers of screen protectors, they are all garbage, because it's near impossible getting the curved edges and beveled corners to stay down, even with a wet install.
The Note 7 has a sharp curve, as opposed to a slight arch (like on previous Samsung curved screens), hence it is that much harder to keep down.

The double-sided tape that came with the plate held for about 5 seconds; hot-glue (my usual fool-proof solution) popped off instantly. Super-glue doesn't bond to the glass.
Has anyone found a reliable way to attach things to the back glass?
(Side note: Pretty as the glass case is, I would never buy buy a phone with it again. Too slippery and too fragile, I cracked the back glass within 2 days of getting the phone.)
Put it inside a case..... Not pretty but then again gluing something on the back isn't either.

I did it with a simple black tpu case from AliExpress on my moto x style, a metal plate under the case and on a magnet vent holder in the car, worked great could barely notice the plate.

Silicon case and a slim magnet in the back.
But I wouldn't use magnets as it might mess up with the sensors. I´m just guessing here...

The plate you put under the case is just metal and the magnet is on the holder you stick in the vent of your car. Sensors seems to work without any issues.

Anyway I'm not risking it. I know a few people who use magnets, but it's too much money to risk it.

That's a nice and simple solution.
Won't the metal plate worsen your connectivity? That is why there are 'antenna lines' on many recent phones right?

It's not noticeable if there's any connection drop. At least from the people I know. Also it's only for car mount purposes.

I personally would go for the clip ones with the windshield suck cups, but it comes down to personal preference.

New case on Amazon

Looks pretty sweet, just came across this case on Amazon

I ordered one and hopefully get it by Friday/Saturday. No prime shipping with this purchase unfort.
Would be interested to know if the case blocks the speaker on the phone or it routes the sound toward you. It looks like it could be routing the sound from the speak to the 2 holes at the bottom.

Please let us know how it is. It looks pretty decent, hope it's not that bulky. Thanks

It seem that parts of the case are metal(aluminum?) and I hope this case won't make cell reception even weaker than it already is.

Xela19115 also mentioned the case here a few days ago. Looks like a tank itself.

I may order when someone else serves as the test subject.
I'll stay tuned to see how other folks like it.
I ordered this case and immediately had horrible signal issues. I've e-mailed the seller asking if there's a solution. It's too bad to use as a phone, though wifi was not blocked at all. Normally I have strong LTE in my house but it's unusable with the case on.
Marvel should sue them for stealing Spiderman design (j/k). Only if this case had a belt clip, I'd bite. I want someone to make a case with a clip!

They already have some cases with holster and belt clip on Amazon.

to each their own... but gawd, that's ugly.
I bought it when it first went up, before their description made it clear it was steel, I was hoping for a thin metal slip. The case is heavy as hell, and the built in screen protector traps pocket lint between the screen protector and screen. The case is held on with 6 hex screws, which worked, but made it even heavier.
It did muffle sound a little, as to radio...I'm just switching to Ting with GSM from Sprint with my phone. I was worried for a bit that my phone was the issue, but a girl who has a galaxy phone has all the same signal issues I did on Sprint. I'll let you know of mine is better, and how GSM is impacted by the case later.

I should also mention, like the Tudia, it made my side access worse. I use Lucid launcher specifically for the left side slide out favorite apps, these were really hard to activate on both this case, and the Tudia. I also use a pie fromthe right side, this was similarly hard to trigger, but at least I could customize the trigger width to accommodate the massive bearth.
Here is another new case on Amazon.

The shortcut leads to the phone rather than a case.

That doesn't look like a quality case to me. The back looks like plastic. But there aren't a lot of cases compatible with the 360 Camera so if you want specifically to use that feature it's probably worth taking the chance since the case is so cheap. But if you don't care about the 360 Camera there are clearly way better choices.

I bought it.
It actually isn't cheap feeling.
Soft touch.
Pretty heavy.
Secures on the phone pretty well.
Looks like it will protect the phone in a drop.
It does add bulk.
The flip down for the camera is pretty cool.
The opening on the back for the camera is large since the case is so deep.
The fingerprint sensor hole is also large because they made it to clear the camera opening without leaving a small piece of TPU inside.
Overall I like it for the ~$10 I paid.
It is either this or naked.
I bought it as well.
Doesn't feel cheap to me.
Adds a decent amount of bulk to the phone but not too much.
The flip down feels pretty sturdy and hopefully it won't loosen over time.
It has a nice feel to it. Soft but not slick. Sort of rubberized.
I've been using the first Tudia case that came out for this phone for awhile now and it's fine most of the time. But when I do use the 360 lens it is a hassle. Having to peel the case off. Hopefully this fixes that problem.

I tried it yesterday and the flip down works fine.
It's a bit stiff to latch and unlatch, but it does solve the 360 camera issue.
No more case removal! It also means that those screen protectors that glue around the edges will bel see likely to lift.
I still haven't decided if I want to use LOCA to attach a screen protector to my phone.
