HOW TO: Free Unlock of Samsung Galaxy S Relay 4G - At your own risk! - Samsung Galaxy S Relay 4G

Hey guys. So, first of all, we've got our own forum! I don't know when it happened, as I wasn't really paying attention after the first few...months...but here we are!
Anyway, some of you may know about the free unlock method posted by owl74 in the Note II forum (link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=34661189, has screenshots). This turned out to work for the SGSIII, the SGSII and SGSII Skyrocket. Well this post is to verify that IT WORKS FOR THE RELAY 4G TOO!
Before proceeding: do this at your own risk. There is no guarantee it will work for you. You MUST be running a stock ROM with a stock modem. I am using the UVMA2 stock ROM with the UVMA2 modem on T-Mobile USA.
Read ALL directions first before trying this out.
This was ONLY tested on MY phone, with the UVMA2 update and modem, on T-Mobile USA.
Without further ado, here are the complete steps toward unlocking the Relay 4G (Thanks again to OP owl47):
*NOTE:* Never use the "back" button. There is an option when pressing the menu button to go back.
First, dial
Code:
*#197328640#
in the dialer app
Hit option [1] UMTS
Hit option [1] DEBUG SCREEN
Hit option [8] PHONE CONTROL
Hit option [6] NETWORK LOCK
Hit option [3] PERSO SHA256 OFF
WAIT exactly 30 seconds.
Hit the menu button and select the "Back" option.
Hit option [4] NW LOCK NV DATA INITIALLIZ
WAIT exactly 60 seconds
There will be no prompt, but reboot your phone. It should now be unlocked.
Verify that your phone is unlocked by using a SIM card from another network. I tested it using my wife's AT&T SIM card and it connected successfully.
The prompts and the menu for the Relay 4G is a bit different from the other phones, but the screenshots provided in the original link above should serve as a rough guide for what you might see. I personally never saw the 'PERSO_NV_INIT is SUCCESSFUL' prompt, but it still worked for me.
Your mileage may vary. If someone is brave enough to give it a try on earlier versions of stock ROMs, be my guest.
For a rooted UVMA2 rom, gee one posted a link to his FTP site where he is hosting a copy of the rooted rom (should be CWM flashable):

Whoops, you're right. I searched the forums and couldn't find anything about "unlocking" that wasn't talking about screen unlocking.
I guess this is what happens when you go for months without an organized forum and people are just cramming everything into mammoth threads...

Hi erveryone,
I am thinking about buying the Galaxy Relay, since my old phone broke, but because I live in Europe I'd have to import it. Is there any way (I could not find any using the search function) to SIM-unlock this phone without being on a t-mobile network?

As far as I know, sure. I had an AT&T SIM in there while I was unlocking it. After I rebooted, it connected to the network. I don't think you need to start connected to the T-Mobile network or anything.

When you follow the above procedure you don't need to have a SIM card in the phone, you are not on T-Mobile or any other network.
I also imported my phone and unlocked it in Norway, it worked nice.

i bought an unlock code from an us site. seemed to be the easiest and fastest way to me.
never needed another simcard for the procedure than my T-Mobile Germany. And yes, it's specifically locked to T-Mobile USA.
A TM simcard from another country just gets rejected like any other provider's card.

This is a very handy tip for sim unlock.
I bought the phone for my cousin as he was jealous of my Relay.
Forgot about the unlock needed as neither of us or on Tmobile here in London. Happily saw this thread. 1, 2, 3 job done, for freeeee.
Thank you for finding and sharing this procedure.

I only tried unlocking before the upgrade. If you unlock before, it remains unlocked after the update. Don't know what happens if you try it after.

Just got my locked relay, used this method - now it's unlocked.
Confirmed working, I guess.
Thanks for that!

I'm on a stock rom and stock UVMA2 Baseband, but I am rooted. Should this work? If this fails and I have a backup in recovery, can I roll back to that or might it brick my phone such that I can't even get to recovery?

I tried it. It did not unlock my phone. It did not harm my phone in any way I can tell, it just didn't unlock it. I've called T-Mobile to request a sim unlock code from them.

undo
Gonna post this here just because it may be useful to someone.
I tried this unlock method - but I tried it AFTER I had done the OTA update to Jelly Bean. It obviously didnt work. I then went to T-mo and got them to give me an official unlock code. The unlock codes they gave me would not work though - just kept saying "unlock unsuccessful" no matter how many unlock codes they gave me to try. I noticed it seemed like it wasn't even going out on the network to try to validate the unlock before saying it was unsuccessful... so I did the unlock backwards kinda:
in the dialer app
Hit option [1] UMTS
Hit option [1] DEBUG SCREEN
Hit option [8] PHONE CONTROL
Hit option [6] NETWORK LOCK
Hit option [3] PERSO SHA256 ON
WAIT exactly 30 seconds.
Hit the menu button and select the "Back" option.
reboot your phone.
After I did that - I was able to get the unlock code from T-mo to actually go out and validate and unlock the phone.

I am unable to complete the instructions in the OP because the network lock menu on my Relay 4g does not have the 4th option... Only 3 options.

Haven't begun to even play with it! Straight out of the box, not rooted, nothing. It is running 4.1.2, though. I was hoping to confirm it worked on Straight Talk before I really started to mess with roms and flashing stuff...

4.1.2 is Jelly Bean. Maybe you have to flash back to Ice Cream Sammich. See the posts above about issues with Jelly Bean.
To flash back, I think you either need heimdall or a custom recovery (although I think you need heimdall to flash a new recovery).

Hey guys,
I just got my Relay 4G in the mail yesterday.... I was playing with it and without SIM just wifi enabled I did all the updates, then I found this thread... (oops)
I hitup www.samfirmware.com, I rolled back to UVMA2 update using Odin 3.07 (put the .tar.md5 file in PDA and flash)
Then I booted into recovery and did a factory wipe. I followed the directions in this thread, voila ... unlocked phone, it works now on my Virgin Mobile SIM card in Canada.
(Did this help you ??? There's a button for that ;0)

Succes on two phones here
Thanks for the instructions, worked perfectly!
I bought two used, one was already on Jelly Bean, and as noted above the option just is not in the menu as listed in directions. After flashing it back to the Ice Cream Sandwich stock rom I could proceed with the unlock and it worked perfectly. The other phone was ICS already and it unlocked first try. :good:

Samsung Exhibit II 4G Discussion

Well I got this phone today and don't see a forum for it yet
It's rather new so I'm guessing thats why,but does anyone know how to root this phone(I'm a noob)....
I want to get rid of some of the useless t-mobile apps and some other samsung ones....... the thing is,I heard I need to root it first
I want to underclock the phone while I play music(screen off)
I want to know if this phone has voodoo sound or whatever it's called.....how do i get a detailed list of what does phone has inside....
Can anyone point me in the right direction please
I ordered one too, but have not gotten it yet.
First, please tell me the firmware version. I sounds that the exhibit II 4G is same as Galaxy W. So please try this post to root: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1317394
Please let me know the result, thanks
Root for Samsung Exhibit II 4G
The root for the Exhibit 4G by nocturnalmike works with the Exhibit II 4G as well.
I got mine yesterday and rooted it today.
Here a link to the thread.

Like it said, just unzip and run the .bat file. Wait for it to finish and your rooted.
Just be sure that all drivers are installed and you can access the phone storage from windows. I installed Samsung Kies because Windows didn't find any driver for mine.
USB Debugging should also be enabled on the phone.
Hope this helps.

Good news. Thank you very much. Monday I will get my exhibit II. I will try it.
Anybody tried this secret keys? Does it work ? Enter *#7465625# and see the following:
Personalization Status
Network Lock [OFF]
Network Subset Lock [OFF]
SP Lock [OFF]
CP Lock [OFF]
Is the network lock ON? I want to unlock it.
Rooting and unlocking are 2 different stories. I believe the new Exhibit II 4G is locked to T-Mobile.

I tried the the code and the phone tried to process it but was unsuccessful. You should be able to get an unlock code from T-Mobile in a few months specially if you got it as a prepaid.

Has anyone noticed dust under their screen? I bought 2 and they both had dust under the screen after a day
I got it today. It can be rooted by floor #3 Arashi1118's way. But I cannot unlock it. Cannot find nv_data.bin. Anybody help????
BTW, there is no chinese language to select.
No dust under my screen, but only had it for 12 hours so far.
Rooted with Arashi1118's information in post #3. Worked like a charm! Now I have much less bloatware! Thanks a ton!

I tried Zerg rush root. All messages on the console seem to be OK and it says success, its a GG man, enjoy root. Then waits for device and finally hit any key to continue. After i hit the key, the command window goes away and phone reboots. However I do not have root. I checked with the id command in terminal and I do not see guid 0. Also cannot remove any bloatware. Any suggestions?
Thanks!
Even after rooting I could not remove T-mobile's bloatware using the native Manage applications option. However, using Titanium Recovery I am able to uninstall apps prepacked by T-mobile.
Check if you have superuser and terminal, two apps installed by the rooting procedure. Launch terminal, grant su permission if it asks, then type "su" and "id" to check if you have the root access.

Thanks for your answer. I did have superuser and terminal installed. Installed titanium backup from the market and removed unwanted apps!
Thanks!
It appears i rooted my Samsung Exhibit II 4G. Both superuser and terminal showed up in apps.
I get su binary outdated but when i try to update; it fails; failed to find currently installed
su binary. How can i fix that? As you can tell, just learning this for first time. I believe it stems from terminal emulator.
Hello,
I was just wondering if anyone has had success with unlocking the Samsung Exhibit II 4G from T-Mobile.
There are a couple of sites, but I am not sure if they are legit or how much they even cost.

It looks like the T679 is not in the list at CellUnlock?
Is this the site that you used?

Just got a Droid 2 Global, unlocked, can't update, custom ROM help would be aprciatd.

Hello all
I purchased a Droid 2 Gloabal unlocked on eBay, got it today, thankfully everything works (well atleast for now).
Currently it's running 2.2 Froyo.
I was prompted to download the OTA software (GB), and I did. The phone then asked me to reboot, and install it, I hit okay.
The next thing is the update progress bar, all goes well, and then all of the sudden, I get a little exclamation mark on the screen, and it reboots.
Now, for some reason I have CW Recovery Mod alway running at startup, never encountered this before om another phone (non Droid, this is my first 'verizon' droid).
Oh, I live in Canada and use Virgin mobile.
Anyway, I select "reboot phone", and then it goes back into 2.2 Froyo, tells me that "Update failed".
I was looking at different roms, just can't figure out which one is the best for my setup - Canada.
The phone looks like it's rooted, I also have the Droid 2 Bootstrapper on it, however the tool gives me an error no matter what button I press in it.
Can someone point me in the right direction please
I am somewhat of a noob.
Also, does nandroid backup the whole system, kernel and all, if things go belly up, will it always fix my issue?
Thanks!
----------------EDIT----------------
So, I found out that the phone is actually not rooted, so I rooted it, using Z4root.
Now, I am at a loss. The phone that I flashed before was quite straightforward to do, this one is stragne.
As mentioned above, I can't upgrade to 2.3 since the phone is rooted (also, I renamed blurupdater.apk so now I don't get the pesky warning message to update).
What do I do to go to 2.3.x?
Since, from what I read on the forums, you can't go 2.2 -> custom rom 2.3, you have to go 2.2 -> 2.3 official rom -> 2.3 custom rom?
Any ideas?
Gingerbread Full SBF 4.5.608

Thanks for that link.
So, I can flash that over my current install of Foryo + root + Clockwork?
Also, what about the unlocked status of the phone?
I have no idea how it is unlocked (perhapps a rom that does not honor provider locks?), is there any way I can tell if the phone has been truly unlocked?
If I go to the menu to enter the unlock code (I forget what menu it is, but you get to it by dialing some number), the "Enter unlock code" still pops up?
What could this mean?
I don't want to brick my phone xD
Thanks again!

Yes you can flash it with what ever you have or don't have
You will have to reroot after with petes root tools
Once unlocked the phone is always unlocked can't be locked again
Sbfs and roms don't touch that part of phone

Thanks, and lastly, about Clockwork Recovery, will it need to be reinstalled as well?
Consider reading this: http://droid.koumakan.jp/wiki/SBF

As I'm sure it was covered in the link from the post above mine, I'll just say this to make sure.
Yes, you will need to reroot and then flash CWM.
Hello again all!
Finally got the time to try to SBF the D2G to Gingerbread.
One question still lingers in my mind.
The phone was sold to me as unlocked, and for all intents and purposes, it is. I use my Virgin mobile SIM, and it works.
However, here is my concern. Is there only 1 way to unlock the phone? A code unlock?
Why I am wondering, it's because if you enter "#073887*" the code entry dialog still appears. Is that supposed to happen?
My fear is, that once I SBF from Froyo to GB, my phone will be locked (unless it was really code unlocked).
So, my question is twofold:
a) would entering "#073887*" ALWAYS show the code entry dialog, even if the phone has been unlocked?
b) Is there a way to determine if the phone has been code-unlocked, v.s. some sort of custom/moded rom that does not honour the provider lock?
Thanks!
Yes, the code input dialogue is displayed no matter what state the phone is in in terms of SIM lock.
There is no ROM or software tool that can avoid the SIM lock on a DROID2 GLOBAL device.
If the phone is unlocked, it stays that way. With a locked phone, all you can do to use it on GSM (besides unlocking normally) is use a TurboSIM. If you can use non-VZW/VodafoneNL SIM cards, your phone is unlocked.
You cannot enter unlock codes while on custom firmware; only stock ROM supports unlocking.
Flashing does not reset the SIM lock status. An unlocked phone stays unlocked even after flashing an SBF image.
you should add that to your wiki, good info
Thanks, that's great info!
I will SBF the phone later and let you guys know

I now have an i717. It was rooted but I didnt recognize it so I immediately put in clockwork and CM9. I lost imei but it reappeared after putting in the radio vkl1 a second time.
I have some db's in the signal meter in settings so its getting something. The number isnt showing from the tmo sim though. The phone was never unlocked.
I do not get a prompt to unlock when I reboot. Did I need to unlock first? I thnk I know the answer.
What should I do? I can pay $10 or whatever but I shouldnt have to. Im not sure if I need to use this odin thing to get to a stock ATT rom or something before I can unlock? Please help. thanks in advance.
I say u should go to odin and unroot then reroot it just to be on the safe side. Then u could unlock it if u want but unrooting it should work. It always works for me

The i717 is the Galaxy Note, not the Skyrocket. Did you put a Skyrocket rom on the Note or was that just a typo?
.........
At this point I have paid cellunlock dot net to give me an unlock code.
Probably a common problem was that my USB cable was not in good status, using a usb extension, so I had failed flashing of firmware til late last night.
This morning I was able to install a stock ATT firmware. Now I receive a prompt for the unlock code. I cannot put CM9 back on it or do anything with it until I unlock it, so I am waiting.
**devpro**. you said no need to unlock? Im not sure. It certainly didnt ask for an unlock code when I was on cm9, but I could not make calls.
Could anyone clarify? Do I need to unlock if I am rooted, using tmo on att note?
I dont care much for odin or that kies crap. I prefer reboot to recovery, clockwork, rom manager and put cm9 on it. In critical situations its a life saver.
So im waiting on the unlock code or to find out i dont need it but i bet I do, especially since i travel overseas a lot.
???
If you're on T-Mobile, and using an AT&T phone you will need to unlock it.

I am doing the same thing with my Skyrocket. I got impatient waiting for the unlock code and rooted it, flashed CWM, custom radio, and CM9 on it. Then realized that after putting in non-AT&T SIM I wasn't getting unlock prompt. Keypad codes to bring up prompt don't work either. Hoping return to stock fixes it and I can just restore the CM9 from backup.

You absolutely have to unlock whether you're prompted or not. Rooting and installing non-stock software on it appears to result in lack of access to the unlock prompt (guessing UCLE2 radio but it may have just been CM9 in general).
I'll let you all know how it goes.
Success
Returned to stock using k0nane's method and Odin here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342348, shut down, removed battery, inserted non-AT&T ROM, booted up, and was prompted for the unlock code.
Note: Those that are planning on using k0nane's method above should use the file he links to (SGH-I727-UCKJ2-k0nane.tar), another archive I grabbed via a different thread boot-looped my phone and I ended up having to do some extra work.

[Q] Band Unlock for D2G

Hello.I'm sure this has been posted a 1000 times because I've seen tons of threads on it in my searches...
I've got a Droid 2 A956 that I need to use with At&t.I've already got the SIM unlock code, just need some guidance
unlocking the radio for use with GSM carriers in America.
The phone is running Android version 2.3.4.
I'm confused because the tutorial on Rootwiki talks about bricking the phone but does not explain how.
If someone could please post the most up to date and full tutorial,I would greatly appreciate that.Thanks.
Quoting http://rootzwiki.com/topic/25828-in...-and-band-unlock-droid-2-global-with-629-rom/
1. Flash 608 SBF using RSDLite (VRZ_A956_4.5.608_1FF_01.sbf) (press up arrow on keyboard while power up to enter flash mode)

This bricks the phone.
Some other steps also brick it.

It just means that some of the steps in the band-unlocking procedure will temporarily brick the phone. If you follow all the steps, in the order listed, you should end up with a rooted, band-unlocked, fully functional phone.
Note: If I were you, I'd apply the SIM unlock code first and make sure it works (can read your AT&T SIM, even though it won't connect to the network) before I put in the time and effort to modify the radio baseband.

how do i do this exactly,no screen pops up when i stick my att sim card in?
I tried the" Enter 74663# [Menu] [Menu] " , nothing happens.
Thanks for the help,much appreciated,.
Try switching the device to GSM mode.
If the Network Unlock PIN dialog doesn't show up, your device might be already unlocked.

[Q][Info] Where does one start for Boot-Loader Unlocking?

I know I shouldn't be posting here because I'm not a dev, but I'm trying to be. I figured this is the best place to ask.
So I picked up a USC galaxy s3 for $20. I fix phones so I figured I'd just use it as parts. USC has left from my area. So the phone is basically useless. I'm on a gsm carrier now so I don't want to flash it.I figured why don't I mess around with it and use it as a learning experience. I want to unlock the boot loader and gsm. I don't care if I brick the phone. This is my test dummy for better understanding android and EFS.
What I have tried so far:
Bricked the phone trying to flash vzw vralec boot loader.
Recovered the phone using a recovery sd
I got a stock Verizon rom running on the phone and hoped I would be able to update through that.
Flashed a sprint radio and a *2 connected to sprint
Tried using casual and EZ1.4 to unlock bootloader.
I realize now this was all a waste of time.
Aboot.mbn is the boot loader right? When the bricked phone connects as QH-Load that is when the device connects as the boot-loader? I’ve bootloader unlocked my CDMA xperia R800x play before using se-tool. Can you do this on the R-530U when using SGTool? Where do you start with unlocking the bootloader? How did the guy who developed casual figure it out? How do you bypass these checks? Can someone explain in-depth the security checks that are in place. If I manage to unlock my boot loader would I then be able to install a different one like of a sprint or verizon device? I have CDMA workshop and se-lg fusion box.
I’ve seen this guide:
“If you root it then upgrade to AOKP 4.1.2 custom ROM or any other custom or stock style ROM thats 4.1.X (Jelly Bean), then there is a REALLY easy trick. I know it's harder for US Cellular only because they are still using 4.04 ICS which doesn't support the menu you need to do this, you need JB for this trick, if you have it stock like on T-mobile then no rooting or upgrading needed, but US Cellular it is. I used it to unlock my tmobile, and my friend and mom both have us cellular. After you Unlock it you can always go back to stock if you want, just make sure and after you root but before you upgrade the ROM you do a nandroid backup to go back to. After you have a Jelly Bean ROM installed,
1. Type *#197328640# and it brings up the factory service menu (very usefull)
2. Select (1) UMTS
3. Select (1)Debug Screen
4. Select (8) Phone Control
5. Select (6)Network lock
6. Inside the Network lock menu, Pick option (3) Perso SHA256 off, Passed that is a screen that says something like "no options in this menu, current command is 11863", Wait for 30-60 secs, from there hit the menu button on bottom left of phone to bring up options, Select "Back".
7. The last command should have brought you back into the Network Lock menu, at the bottom is (4) NW Lock NV Data Initialize, Select it. You might be asked a saftey are you sure, some people not, after it begins that process wait a good 60 sec the reboot. Thats it! Phones Unlocked
It would be good for you to root and upgade a custom JB 4.1.x or higher ROM anyways as they have support and menu options for working on all CDMA/GSM/LTE Networks. Even if you unlock your phone using the IMEI number and paying 20$ for the unlock code, you will still need JB. They also have apps on the play store specifically for galaxy s3's, capable of unlocking for allot cheaper if your phones rooted.
Good Luck!”
But it doesn’t have the options for USC. Here’s my plan: Bootloader->Flash Sprint Bootloader->Flash Sprint ROM/Radio-> Follow above steps for GSM Unlock
Am I out of my mind or is this possible? Again I don’t care if I brick the phone. I’m using this as a hands-on learning experience instead of just reading things and not understanding them. Essentially an i535, R530, and L710 are the exact same physical device, just running different firmware?
I don't think your gs3 has a locked bootloader plus a CDMA phone cannot become gsm.

The S3 is a global phone so it does have the hardware for GSM networks, you need a SIM card for that network though obviously.
Ignore me... I'm apparently a blithering idiot who can't read ^_^
The Verizon S3 is able to use GSM, But you will only have Edge (Go to mobile network settings and change it to global). Another downfall is if you upgrade OTA you will have a locked bootloader.
