Lost root - no update - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I have owned my Xoom for about 6 months. It came with ICS 4.0.4 stock. I am very much into technical/computer related stuff, but not so much on the programming side of things. I learned about rooting while i was researching which tablet I would purchase, however I never gave it much thought because the Xoom kept me busy and entertained just like it was. Well that is until about a month ago. I was looking into changing some things with the tablet's UI and realized in order to do anything spectacular i would need to root. So i read. And read, and read. After researching rooting my xoom for a month straight, I finally decided it was time to root yesterday. I was successful on the first attempt, and the damn thing hasn't left my hands since!
I downloaded several root apps, but never changed much because I didn't want to screw it up. The app I used the most is Rom Toolbox Pro. The only things I felt comfortable enough to change were the system fonts, the bootscreen animations, and I also freezes a few apps I didn't use. Also. I did complete an "online" nandroid backup.
For some reason a couple of hours ago I changed the boot screen again, however when I rebooted there was no animation at all. No big deal, I tried changing to a different one. Same thing - just a black screen as it was booting. This wasn't really a big deal to me as I rarely even turn the tablet off, it stays home while I am at work during the week.
Sorry for the long winded post, but here is my problem. I installed an app called Android Tweaker and it had an option for automatic customization to increase speed and performance. I did run that. A little later I decided I like ROM Toolbox a lot, so I purchased the Pro version. When I started the app, it said that it required root access which it was not detecting. I Googled for almost an hour on the problem and everyone else seemed to only get this problem after an OTA upgrade. I double checked and made sure I did not receive any updates. I went to my app drawer to check superuser and see if it listed Toolbox. First, superuser was not even in the drawer. I did have an icon on the homescreen though and Toolbox was not listed. Someone on another forum suggested uninstalling the app then reinstalling, and also to check and see if superuser needed to be updated in the market. It did, and I tried both things. No success. I ran bootchecker and it says not rooted. I then checked superuser again, and ALL the apps were now missing. Which was nor the case when I initially checked.
I am very thankful that I can still use the tablet, but I want root back! Anyone have any ideas what went wrong, and how to fix it? That is a relatively rhetoric question as from everything I have read here there are some really smart and knowledgeable members on the board. I hope someone is able to help.
Thanks!

No body? Someone has to know something .. I hope!!

Did you make a back up you can restore? Have you tried rooting again?

I have not tried rooting again because I wasnt sure where to start. I did a nandroid backup, is that what you mean? Sorry if I sound like I don't know what I'm talking about. I tried to learn as much as I could but it all didn't stick.

Boot into recovery and restore the nandroid you made it should give you root back. You can boot into recovery by starting with your Xoom off press the power button 3 seconds after the logo appears press volume down, you should see Android recovery written in the corner if so press volume up to select.

OK after get to recovery how do I restore the nandroid backup?

I can't access my nandroid backup because I don't have root. I tried using nandroid manager. Obviously I am missing something very simple here

First, root your device again and install a recovery.
If you're using CWM, touch or click down (Using the volume buttons) to Nandroid, select it with the power button or a touch, select restore (With the power button or touch), and select your Nandroid. As for TWRP, I don't use it so I can't really help you.
As a side note, you shouldn't need root to access your Nandroid. Find the service you stored the online Nandroid at and download it into your microSD Card. Note that you need the Nandroid on the microSD Card to restore it.

So I do have to root again? I wouldn't be able to just follow dfib1 advice and restore without rooting again? Also will the nandroid backup file be obvious in recovery mode?

[Q] stuck on splash screen, please help!

im new at this please bear with me.
i rooted my shift last week. everything was fine, im not ready to get too crazy into flashing stuff yet (since the risk for bricking is higher with android). i like to take my time read, study, test small things here and there.
today i was browsing the forums and came across the battery icon mod
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=892297
so i downloaded it, i had rom manager installed, and installed the battery icon manager.
i chose the icon i wanted rebooted, it looked ok, so i wanted to try the other icon and loaded that one, phone rebooted and got stuck on the sprint splash screen.
i can boot into the bootloader, not sure what steps i need to take next to restore my os.

Boot in to CWM Recovery go to backup/restore /advanced restore, select restore /system only. Once that is complete clear the cache, reboot. you can then delete your dalvik cache (note: clearing the dalvik cache doesn't work via CWM currently). That's it.
If you didn't make a back up, just re flash the rom. If you were still stock, just flash preludedrew's or nfinitefx's base. You can even still keep your data. Just make sure from now on to back up before doing any mods.

I have used TWRP. I was on CWM Touch, downloaded and installed the TWRP from google play. Rebooted into recovery, created backups to internal and external, and flashed SkyICS 4.2f6 by Seanz. I followed OP instructions on how to flash. Did not have any problems and it was very easy to use.
Used TWRP and flashed several MODS without any hitch. All I did was reboot into recovery selected the zip files and swipe to install, did not even had to wipe cache or anything. I am not sure if this is the correct way but I was able to flash 8 other MODS doing this.
Here is what don't like:
I wanted to install the same rom but to do a clean wipe since the rom had several updates. I rebooted into recovery to TWRP, did OP flashing instructions which were:
-reboot into team win recovery
-wipe system
-factory data reset
-then go to mounts and choose external sd
-no go back and find the rom by choosing install zip
-swipe to confirm
-then install the radio you downloaded
and when complete reboot phone
-at this point everything will be settling and caching
which may or may not seem laggy.... and yes that white line is normal
its a battery representation mod
-im sure youll be eager to update busybox immediatly but let me tell you no
first open super user app.. find preferences and update user binary
hit it twice giving it root permissions
now .. is when to update busy box through the provided installer
-after you have done this
-power down phone
reboot into recovery and flash the latest update
and email package only
However, I was not able to reboot into recovery. I have a Samsung Skyrocket but was not able to put the phone into recovery mode by pressing and holding the power, volume up, and volume down buttons. The phone kept vibrating but the Samsung screen wont come up. Frustrated, I rebooted the phone, downloaded CWM, updated to Touch and proceeded to flash using CWM with no problems.
At this point i'm hesitant on using TWRP. I am not even sure if ODIN supports it. I'm afraid that if i'm on TWRP and brick my phone, I will not be able to use ODIN.
Good luck and please press thanks if this was useful.

Unless you typed it wrong, the problem seems to be you're holding power down along with the volume buttons. I've never had to do that after the phone vibrates telling me its powering up
Power down the phone, then power it back on, then immediately press and hold both volume buttons only. Just a thought.
I've been using twrp for awhile now to flash skyics. Never an issue getting to recovery.
Edit. Odd that cwm works for you but twrp doesn't. Maybe Odin back to stock and do it all over again?
I've flashed using either method. As long as it works, right?

If you install goo manager and install the recovery script from the haptick bottom left button, the easiest way to start from recovery is from goo manager or from from manager without the annoying recovery start with the power and volume up + down. Twrp is the smoothest way of flashing , back up and recovery.

TWRP 2.2 is awesome. Very easy to use and full of features. I have used it to install several updates of SKY ICS 4.2F and CM9 nightlies for my Skyrocket with out a hitch. I prefer it to my older recovery (Clockworkmod Touch Recovery v5.8.1.3 )
For users that can't get into recovery from a complete power down, it would appear that you have a bad TWRP install and/or you are not using the proper key combinations. I suggest the following:
How to Install TWRP via GooManager?
1. Install the GooManager app from Market (Play Store) or install from SD card.
2. Open GooManager
3. Tap menu and hit Install OpenRecoveryScript
4. Tap Yes
5. Verify that the filename displays your device's code name and hit Yes
6. The file will download and your device will install the recovery automatically.
How to boot into recovery only?
1. Unplug USB
2. Take the battery out and place it back.
3. Hold both Vol up + Vol down buttons, press the Power button
4. Release the Power button after one beep.
Another vote for TWRP. First discovered via Rev. Kyle on my HP Touchpad.
Install using GooManager and does everything I want it to do.

User error is not it several people have had issues with twrp. If so then explain to me what I did wrong? I wipe everything and install just like I do with touch. you could of had the infamous "sticky power button" , seems more than one user is having this prob and blame it on the recovery, cwm or twrp, or a bad flash.
if you get the vibration, but does not enter in recovery or dl mode, or bootloops, could be sticky power button.

Maybe you aren't waiting long enough for the install to settle.
Hes not being "a putz".. just because other people have the same problem doesnt mean its not user error or misinformation. I mean, come on.. i read these threads religiously and have given up correcting all the misinfo that gets shared as fact.
Don't take it personally.. I've been flashing a long time too. AND I've committed user errors. No one is immune. Impatience is usually the biggest err. You know why i don't help people as much as i used to? Its the insulting posts and threats that come with telling someone the right way to fix something.
Edit: "user error" is not an insult. But please refrain from calling people names. THAT is insulting.
Edit2: have you ever read the skyics threads? Plenty of errors are reproduced there.. and usually its "user err". Gets confusing for the devs.

Galaxy S Blaze Rooted, Now What?

Hello all! I'm a total noob to the Android world. I've been a user of iPhone for the past 3 years. Lol. Just picked up the new Galaxy S Blaze yesterday and I've already Rooted it. I know lots of Dev's are on the way for this device since its still relatively new. But my question is, what can I really do with it now that its been rooted? How do I get rid of some of the "Bloatwares" on it? I know there are lots that T-mobile put on the phone. Thanks for any help!
to remove the bloat, i used titanium backup. Not only is it good for removing the apps, but its also great to backup and restore apps when/if we get roms.
Titanium is a must...other things you can use to remove bloat as well are ES file Explorer or Root Explorer. Root Explorer is not free, but I use it regularly. I always suggest renaming files rather than deleting them.
Can't Get the Computer to Recognize The Phone
Thanks for the replies. So, I rooted my phone and using Titanium Backup, I deleted some of the apps that I figured that I don't need. Well, now I might have deleted one too many? I cant get the Computer to recognize the phone at all when I connect it using the USB. Its not the driver the issue 'cause it was working previously when I rooted the phone. Any ideas how I can fix this? Help please...

Before uninstalling an app with Titanium, I use the "Freeze" option first. It stops the app. If i have no problems, I delete it. I made the mistake of uninstalling something that someone on here said was safe to uninstall, and I started getting errors. I went back to stock to fix it.
I'll also point out that I seriously can't tell any difference at all between "freeze" vs. uninstall.
What I mean by that is, if I freeze an app....it's effectively gone. The apps I knew I wouldn't use, or wouldn't want on the phone I first backed up, and then hit uninstall. If TitaniumBackup gave me the prompt about the app not being deodexed (basically, it's kinda like integrated in the rom if it's not deodexed) I would just freeze it. I mean, seriously, who cares about the stupid free megabytes counter in the phone.
I'd never know the difference between freezing and uninstalling.
In short.......hooray for freeze!

Weird. Ok, note to self, don't un-freeze any of the apps I have frozen!
In all seriousness though, did it just not let you and you reloaded to get access to the app, or did the phone fall down and go boom, and you HAD to reload?

Yes, I froze the BadgeProvider 1.0 and the phone had some problems. I went to un freeze the app and it said it was un freezing but never did. So I just reloaded my backup.
If everything is working fine on your phone I don't see any problem with leaving them frozen.
Yeah, that wouldn't be something I would freeze myself. You'll stop getting missed call notifications, or so I read anyway.
How do i back-up my files?
Titanium backup. Works great for me

You can hold vol up and vol down, press power while holding both volume buttons until it vibrates, then let go off power while still holding both volume buttons until recovery pops up.
Or download quickboot if you're already rooted.
OR adb reboot recovery from your computer.

It isn't rooted yet. When I do the first method i see recovery menu for a second and then it reboots.....or most of the time it just keeps vibrating in pulses. Am I doing something wrong?does adb reboot recovery require root? and how do I proceed with that.....

Another good uninstaller/app freezer is Root Uninstaller Pro. I used that to freeze and/or eliminate my T-MO and samsung bloat/crapware. It also gives me a bit more control over other options involving any apps on my phone, such as letting me back it up or obtain it again from Play Store should I need to do so.

I've found that it works best when the phone is hooked up to your PC. Hold down volume up, volume down AND power all at the same time. Once you see the following message on your phone, take your finger off the power button only (being careful not to accidentally do it twice - that shuts off the phone), then take your fingers off the volume up/down. The message starts like this:
Warning!
A custom OS can cause critical problems...
Near the bottom, it will tell you to use volume up to continue, and so forth.
BTW, there is a wonderful post in the development section of the Blaze area that tells you how to root the phone using ODIN. Read it carefully - that's how I rooted mine!
Hope this helps!

Problem with Putting Bean Rom

Today I tried to do my first root/custom rom and using the Guide put together by DroidStyle (who has also been very helpful in making me understand what I'm dealing with). The rooting wasnt a problem as when I finished that I was able to restart and the phone worked fine.
I then put Beans Custom stock on my External SD (4 gigs) and used a APK installer on my phone to install EZ Recovery. I selected the first selection right across from CWM and clicked flashed which said it was successful, and then did reboot recovery.
I then went to do a Nandroid Backup which seemed to go well until it threw an error saying it was skipping apps and something about "SD/Android_Secure". I did search the forums and it seems these shouldn't be a problem so I continued. I then went to the Wipe Data and that said it completed successfully. Finally I chose the install .zip from sd and I selected the BeanCustomStock which was sitting in the root directory of my external SD card.
After that said it was successful, I then chose reboot system from the menu but then when it restarts I seem to have a problem. It just comes back to the recovery screen and says theres an error with the SD card:
Error processing ROM Manager script. Please verify that you are performing the backup, restore, or ROM installation from ROM Manager v4.4.0.0 or higher.
I am hoping I am just overlooking something or its a simple fix. I would really appreciate any help anyone can give me as Im pretty clueless as what to do next.
Thanks!!
Hey. I'm pretty sure it's because you flashed the 5.8.4.5 CWM. You have to make sure you're using a kexec-enabled recovery (6.0.1.0) in order for the boot process to occur. So just flash the other CWM in EZ recovery.

When I was doing the flash/boot recovery I did select the CWM there. Will the kexec-enabled recovery (6.0.1.0) be on the drop down menu or do I have to put it there? And if so how?
I'm heading off to work right now but when I get home, I'd love to give another go. Thankfully with the guide on the forum each time I messed up I was able to get back to a working one (the first time I almost had a panic attack ).
Thanks for the quick response
You have to select cwm 6 in the drop down menu in the ez recovery app, then select flash...reboot recovery.

Seems that was the problem. Selected CWM 6 amd the rest went easily. Thanks again. Any tips or suggestions on what to do now that I have Beans Build 7?
Thanks!
Be sure to log into Dropbox to get your 50gb upgrade!
Sadly I already have dropbox . Any other apps? I am going to have to flip through the threads in the theme section and grab some nice apps and such.

You will still get the extra dropbox space...I did!!!
You were right. I double checked today and my drop box changed to 50 gigs! I also discovered the google now which pretty awesome. The voice works perfectly but seems glitchy with any searches I type as sometimes it doesn't do anything and I have to go back to the home screen.
After looking around it seems Google now is still in development?

yes google now is still early in its development, but better than s-voice imo.

[Q] Bad Recovery flash? (SOLVED)

I've done some searching, finding similar things that have happened to others here, but nothing that specifically fits what I'm experiencing...
I'm hoping someone has a step-by-step that I can do to get this phone rooted properly... First, I've been on XDA for a while, Droid Eris and HTC Incredible 2, but this is the first Samsung phone I've owned... A few days ago, I tried the Casual Root method and went ahead and rooted, unlocked the bootloader (unsecure ABOOT) and loaded CWM touch as my recovery. All looked fine, but when I went in to recovery to try and backup the stock rom, it threw a ton of Not able to write/Cannot Mount errors... My phone came with the MF1 4.1.2 already running.
Since, I've tried EZ-Unlock 1.2 to check and unlock the bootloader (which it showed as "Unknown" until I clicked unlock) and I've tried installing different recoveries through EZ Recovery (TWRP 2.2.2, CWM variants, etc...). Still, no joy in getting this to work properly.
The last attempt kept the phone in Download mode until I rebooted using the Power, Vol. Down, Menu to bypass it (Not detecting ANY recovery now!?). I'm still able to get back to the original Rom (which is rooted now), but I'm concerned with bricking if I keep trying this.
So, I'm thinking now of just doing an Odin back to stock and reflashing all the original firmware so I can start over with Casual. Was wondering if anyone had any other input which might get the R/W issue fixed so I don't have to go through all the Odin stuff? Compared to HTC phones, this is quite different with Root/Flashing, so I'm a little confused with the whole process of things right now... Any help would really be appreciated! I'm looking forward to deving at some point, once I'm comfortable with the process...
Thanks,
Rich
Anyone?

If you were able to root your phone successfully, then what I would recommend what to do is download whatever image you want (for me, I downloaded twrp 2.6.3.0) and then flash it through flashify (free in play store).
If you want to get it an easier way, then use goomanager and then install open recovery script (you'll see it when you press menu). It should install the recovery automatically.
If you want clockworkmod touch, then if you want an image, use flashify to flash it. Doing either of the options will give you a working recovery.

Ok, I've gotvtwrp 2.6.3.0 loaded, works... But, I cannot mount anything, backup totally fails. Any ideas? Twrp also asks for a password for some reason...
Btw, nice to see a familiar face on here! How's life treating you these days?

Thanks! After going through Rom Manager and letting it update CWR on it's own, I finally got everything working now! Backup of the Stock Rom is done finally and I can start flashing some Rom's to get comfortable with things... Hopefully, I can start putting out some Rom's for this device soon!! Thanks for all the help, I really appreciate it!
I have been using kitkang cm11, so far really excited and loving 4.4. I have been updating daily.
