I feel I should tell people who do a lot of word, ppt, excel that the Polaris Office app that comes preinstalled on TF is much SUPERIOR to quickoffice hd pro that supposedly is designed for tablets. The words are mixed up and ppt sides that I use in my word documents don't show up clearly on quickoffice, but they run perfectly fine on Polaris, so don't rush into buying an office suite for your TF, because Polaris gets the job done well.
Thanks for passing that info on. One reason I want a TF over the Acer or Xoom is because it comes with that software.
hi there. have you guys have any idea how to insert an image (eg from my gallery) into an excel spreadsheet in the said app? There dont seem to be any option to do that. I even searched the Polaris website for help, but to no avail.
For everyone interested, I just this morning updated my Office Suite comparison over in the XOOM forum to include Polaris Office (PowerPoint only for now). The link is in my signature. I will update the Word and Excel comparison soon.
does Polaris office do multi-worksheet formulas/lookups in Excel?

That's a big negatory. All the pages are there but calcs between them do not work. Same issue with DTG. I have not tried quickoffice yet so I do not know if this feature works with it.
To confirm I'm talking about gdocs that I pull down, I have not created a spreadsheet from scratch to try the calc across sheets with PO.

Well that sucks...it's a pretty important feature.
I'm using it for work and it does work well. I wish you could create and save to dropbox folders then have them sync properly. Polaris needs to write to the dropbox api or dropbox needs to add support for file moves and creation to android.
I admit that I am not the best speller. Thus I wish there was spell and grammar check.

Does anyone know how to "select" text in the Docs app? As stupid as this sounds, I haven't figured out how to do it yet.
Thanks in advance to anyone who responds.

Open the document, go into Edit mode and then double-tap into the text. You'll see something like two pins enclosing selected text. Use the "Ribbon" to copy/cut/paste.
Thanks!

Not sure that's possible with any of the current apps. They are very limited in their functionality; the devs don't seem to expect tablet users to do serious work :-|

Polaris would be great if I was able to paste text into the app that was copied from other apps. It looks as though this was possible prior to 3.1, but is broken now. That's a pretty big requirement for me.

Polaris is terrible if you use Google Docs.
QuickOffice is the ONLY application that will let you freely edit Google Doc spreadsheets as if you were on a PC.
Otherwise Polaris is a nice app, if you don't use Google Docs. At all.
Hi! Im new to this forum and also to the transformer. I bought it because its a really cool devise and I plan to use it to take notes during classes and so on. It works fine for this, except right now im studying the phonetic alphabet (the swedish one) and polaris office does not have any of the symbols i need. Therefore im in need of an app that can handle bot typing on the keyboard and handwriting with a stylus pen, kinda like the one on HTC Flyer.
Is there an app that can do this? Or is it possible to maybe get the htc notes app for the transformer? it does not have to work flawless, but i want to be able to add handwritten notes to the ones i type.
Thanks!
Not sure about different 'Notes' apps, there are quite a few to choose from on the market but I'd probably recommend 'Thumb Keyboard'. Apart from it being the best thing since slice bread with regards to typing it also has all the different characters and keysets that you'd ever need and is fully customisable.
There is...I can't recall the name but you can write and type on a note. it shrinks your writing to fit on a line too... pretty cool.
Will check when I get home.

Freenote does this, I love it Perfect for class. Also, SwiftKey for Tablets is my keyboard recommendation - it has a split keyboard option for thumb typing as well, plus predictive text.
Swedish, huh? How'd you get into that? My husband's family is from Sweden. (Not to clutter up the thread, just don't hear Sweden come up too often)

You can try to port Myscript Notes Mobile from the Lenovo Ideapad.

It converts your stylus notes in normal typed text.

Hmm. I just noticed that freenotes has no option to export or save files as documents. Since i plan on uing this in my studies i really need this function. Is there a way to do this or do i need to find another app?
maybe my mediocre english got you all confused. What im looking for is an app that can handle, or at least save files as, .doc files that has an option for handwriting aswell as typing with the keyboard. Kinda like polaris office, but with built in handwriting.
Thanks again
Latest update of Evernote came with a fairly decent Skitch integration. Might be worth a look.

I unfortunately just noticed this today as well, actually. I was hoping that maybe I could figure out a way to export Freenotes into .pdf format. Either way, will keep an eye out for what you're looking for and will keep watching this thread. I think this concept for Android is sort of ongoing development, so hopefully it'll take off soon!

I downloadet that application two days ago but unfortunatly its not really what im looking for. Skitch might work for drawing, but not really for writing. I want an app that is more like Word or Polaris office, but with handwriting also.

RepliGo Reader
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.cerience.reader.app&feature=search_result
could possibly try something like hanwang. Its a keyboard replacement that either lets you type, or write, and it auto converts it to typed text.
A few tips, the last version i tried defaulted to Chinese, change it in the settings.
and write in cursive, even if its sloppy as mess its more accurate, amazingly accurate! than regular script writing.
Hanwang!!
Antipaper - Good for handwriting but does no recognition.
I export to Evernote and store my notes there. Evernote does recognition (not conversion) and lets me search my hand written notes.

PPT files is powerpoint file~ i think wat he means is using Polaris Office to import ppt file. It is fine for documents, excel and powerpoint file. But Problem in PDF.
Having the exact same problem with mine, Canadian wifi model, 32Gb. seems with any PDF file, at least any that I've tried. It will bring up the loading bar saying importing page 1/X... and then it pauses for a long time at the last page then just crashes right to the home screen with no error.
Fairly annoying as this was the feature I was most wanting to use with this device. If anyone can share a fix it would be much appreciated.
If this pdf would work... it would be GOLDEN. I hate using ezPDF just cause of the UI... its embarrassing. Gives Android a bad name...
I think this pdf problem is effecting all Canadian versions. I've tried 2 different ones and they both have the problem. Contacted Samsung Canada about it but they said they weren't aware of any problems. And to the above ezPDF is pretty good, not sure why you think the UI is bad. As for the eraser problem I just change the color to white, works pretty much like an eraser.

If you use the airbrush icon, it gives you pen, air brush, and eraser. To access these, you have to click back and forth and it is quite tedious. They could have laid the pen/eraser and thickness control in the quick access menus. Using the s-pen button to toggle highlight would also be a nice addition. And general UI, the awkward orange and patterned background doesn't look too good. The buttons on the main file explorer page on the top right is all bunched up because the app was made for mobile devices not tablet optimized.
Having said that, the functionality is simply amazing. It does literally everything you need it to do. Just wish the UI was a little more "Holo".

I was facing the same issue right after I bought mine and mine was in Singapore.
I sent my queries to Samsung staff and they clarified that yes it is not working at that moment.
However after the 76mb recent update, it solved everything, able to import pdfs and also scroll bars in snote.
If you have not received the update, the only solution is to update to jellybean which is working when importing pdfs.

Hi!
One of the main reason I bought this particular tablet was to easily read and highlight in PDFs when I study. Since it got this wonderful pen I thought it would be simple to use fingers for zoom/pan etc and the pen to highlight but I've not found any app with that functionality. Of course I can go in a menu and select highlight but I want to use the stylus as an "always on highlight" marker.
ezPDF seems to do the trick but I can't tell, anyone who tried it and can tell if it works well or have any other recommendations?
Thanks in advance!

I am looking for the same. I have to read and highlight many pdf documents. I have tried Officesuite pro, no luck, and Polaris, no luck. Adobe reader lets me highlight but its clumsy and highlighted text isn't shown if I open the pdf in another program afterwards.

So, I've tired ezPDF but I can't get the main function I requested to work. I can annotate and highlight, sure. But the program doesn't tell the difference between my finger and the pen so I can't use the pen as a constant highlighter and the finger to navigate through the pages. Can this be done using the application? This is critical, I have apps to view and annotate in PDFs that are at least as good as ezPDF, but none with that functionality.

I have purchased many pdf reader/editors... ezpdf, repligo, moon pdf, iannotate and so on..
The reason - I spent most of the time reading and editing pdf...
I also need to edit a lot of pdf which are scanned documents as pictures.. Ezpdf does the job best becoz of pre rendering the pages...
Over the years ezpdf has come on top.
However u cannot get the option of fully disabiling finger touch and use only stylus in any of the good pdf readers...
But the good thing is that when you use stylus, palm rejection works. The important thing is that you have to make sure the stylus is close to the screen before you rest the palm on the screen...
This works well for me... today I spent about 7 hours doing edits, the way in mentioned above and no issues..
They should work with lecturenotes developer. Lecturenotes allow making annotations using stylus while at the same time finger scrolls and controls zooming.

Thanks for your post! Well I'm starting to think that you are right, there is no app that allows me to use the pen as an always active highlighter.
I use LectureNotes for everything but pure books in pdf because I think it's as close to perfection as a note taking app could be. But import and handle 1000p PDFs is a no go and when flipping page is the main activity there are a lot better apps. At all lecture PDFs (10-20p) that we get LectureNotes is great, it allows you to mark and annotate in the PDF as well as easily inserting a page between if you need more space for notes.
What I want though, isn't just palm rejection. I still want to be able to switch page with my fingers. I want the program do treat my fingers and pens differently though, just like I sit with a book in one hand and a highlighter in the other when reading course literature I want to sit with my tablet in one hand and my stylus in the other. But the more programs I try, the less I think this is possible.

I totally agree, make the insertion and more importantly handling when switching pages of large PDFs more easy on LectureNotes and you got exactly what I'm looking for. Of course, keeping the bookmarks and be able to use them in a simple way is important as well. And it needs a little "read mode", because when I have one finger pan enabled I cannot rest my palm on the screen without accidently pan the page and I can't get the page flipping as smooth as every PDF reader. You know the, swipe your finger over the screen and it's getting to the next or previous page.

I wrote to the developers of both iAnnotate and ezPDF to recommend a fuller incorporation of the S-pen in annotating PDFs. Would love to see LectureNotes style ability to use the stylus to write and the finger to scroll at the same time. (Or perhaps have LectureNotes handle PDFs as more than bitmaps!). The folks from iAnnotate said they would consider it, so perhaps if more people write in and suggest it, they'll see that there is a good market for this.

Great initiative! Considering the amount of Note devices both in the phone as well as the tablet versions samsung has sold and probably will be selling there should be plenty of potential users for such an app. But to me, since most of my PDFs are for a specific class that I have notes for as well having all together in LectureNotes would of course be the best solution even if I think such features in LectureNotes isn't coming any time soon.

Adobe reader 10.4.2 allows reading and highlighting with pen it also has freehand drawing, adding text, text striking and note insertion along with other features. Tested with my note 10.1 and works great.
ezPDF works fine for me, and I do use it everyday for annotating my academic PDFs. I'm surprised how awesome it works for highlighting (are yo umaybe doing something wrong?), and I've gotten really quick at it. I have set the option to recognize palm in the settings. You can still change pages (or visualized column or whatever) either with the page button or with two fingers (holding the stylus, I find tapping on the next page button is the quickest). I often annotate and I love the possibility of freehand writing (somehow, it makes me feel like my PDFs are scanned versions of printed copies I've written on!), and for this I always use the pen (and not the pencil).
The only complaint I might have is that it takes a second to save the annotations when you change a tool, but that's fine for me.
Let me know if you need any other info!
Surely this isn't impossible, or even difficult for the devs of any pdf reader to include?
Obviously I am not a developer so I am guessing at this, palm recognition etc measure the surface area/pixels/electrical connections made simultaneously? If I am broadly correct then is it not possible to have settings that recognise palms( lets say 500 pixels or more) , fingertips(less than 50 but greater than 10 pixels) and stylus, with its considerably smaller surface area, as say 10 pixels or less?
Am I being very naive?
I highlight and underline, etc alot on pdf's. The Note works well for this while in Polaris but when I go to print, those annotations don't print - only the original pdf.
Is there a solution to this? (using PrinterShare premium for printing btw. It is set to print color.
Any other apps that do work?
Thanks
Hope this helps
You could acomplish this, more or less, with S Note. You can import PDFs, they are basically treated as multiple page-size images, then annotate them as normal (draw on the "picture"/page), and then export the note as a PDF. The exported PDF will include the annotations you made, printing that should give you the desired effect.
On a side note, I use Kno Textbooks for the same thing you are using Polaris for; I mention this to let you know that it will not help you in any way

If you're using ezPDF and you still have that problem, flatten you annotations.. you do that by selecting them and then press 'flatten'.
But ezPDF works fine here, without the flatten.
Polaris could have the problem because it adds the annotations as 'comments', thus only viewable if comments are turned on, something not standard when printing.

kno looks promising but I don't have a way to export to pdf (I am using the play store version if it makes a difference). Does it require the embedded version (playing with a 2014 Note 10.1 which doesn't have it)?

Click to collapse
I didn't say use Kno, or export from Kno.
I said: Import pdfs into S Note, anotate them there, and export (from S Note) as pdf.
